NEW DELHI: India’s economy is poised to reach the $4 trillion GDP milestone this year, at par with that of J a p a n ’ s e c o n o m i c s i z e , Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister said on July 2, speaking at the Cambridge India Conference event in UK.
In a dialogue at the University of Cambridge, Sanyal highlighted India’s fast pace of growth last year, when it grew by 8.2 percent, and said the country is anticipating a growth rate of 7 percent, which should be higher than all major economies.
Currently, in dollar terms, India’s economy is the fifth largest in the world, at $3.7 trillion in nominal terms.
“After liberalisation, it took us 16-17 years to cross the first trillion dollars mark. It took another 7 years to reach the $2 trillion mark, which happened in 2014-15. It took another 7 years to hit the $3 trillion mark in 2021-22. It should have taken 5 years but we lost two years to Covid-19 In just three years, we will cross $4 trillion Now we will need only two years to cross the $5 trillion unless some major unseen shock happens,” Sanjeev Sanyal said.
India is expected to overtake J a p a n a n d G e r m a n y b y 2 0 2 7 , to emerge as the third largest economy in the world.
Major rating agencies Fitch and Asian Development Bank have projected India’s growth rate to be 7 percent this financial year, while IMF, S&P Ratings and Morgan Stanley have projected India’s growth rate to be 6.8 percent for FY25.
The Reserve Bank of India has projected the real gross domestic product for the financial year at 7 2 percent, higher than estimated previously.

CHENNAI: India stands 38th in the Logistics Performance Index, said Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, while speaking at a Summit 2024 here.
He elaborated on the various initiatives and measures they had been taking in the shipping industry. “We need to improve [the ranking] substantially. We are adopting
advance technologies and exploring new business plans, fast-tracking infrastructure development, focusing o n s u s t a i n a b l e l o g i s t i c s , a n d becoming a favoured investment destination,” Mr. Jagannathan said.
There was an increase of 102% in major port capacity, more than a 1,000% boost in inland waterways cargo, and a 121% rise in the strength of sea fares In the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), 2023, nine Indian ports have been ranked in the global top 100 list, he said
Mr. Jagannathan also said there was a need to have the right ecosystem to catch on and leverage the ship-repair and ship-building industry. “Shipping management companies need to have gender parity. As lady cadets sign on to vessels, we will have more and more women seafarers,” he said.
NEW DELHI : The Commerce Ministry is developing a platform for registering non-tariff barriers (NTBs) faced by exporters and taking up with the concerned countries for their resolution, a senior official said. At present, there is an information gap on these barriers particularly for small items.
“We are making a portal so that we can prioritise all the NTBs. Traders will register their complaints and the ministry will pursue that,” the official said. In cases where the barrier is impacting a large volume of goods will be prioritised for their redressal and action-taking.
Economic think tank GTRI in its report has stated that India needs to act in a fast-track manner for the removal of NTBs, being faced by domestic exporters in different countries like the US, China and Japan, to achieve export target of USD 1 trillion for goods by 2030.
The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has suggested a two-pronged strategy to mitigate the influence of NTBs on exports.
Agri Products Face Issues
It asked for upgrading domestic systems, in cases where Indian products are rejected due to quality i s s u e s ; a n d r e t a l i a t i n g i f
unreasonable standards or rules continue to obstruct exports from New Delhi.
“Many of India’s exports suffer due to time taking prior registration requirements and unreasonable domestic standards/rules in many countries.
“India must talk to partner countries for reasonable solutions,” GTRI Co-founder Ajay Srivastava has said.
M a n y o f I n d i a ’ s f o o d a n d agriculture products face problems due to higher pesticide levels, presence of pests and contaminations due to foot and mouth disease.
India’s exports are far below potential as they face NTBs in the EU (European Union), the US, China, Japan, Korea and many other countries.
Key Indian exports that routinely face high barriers include chillies, tea, basmati rice, milk, poultry, bovine meat, fish, chemical products to the EU; sesame seed, black tiger shrimps, medicines, apparel to Japan; food, meat, fish, dairy, industrial products to China; shrimps to the US; and bovine meat to South Korea.
According to the report, the other products which face these
barriers include ceramic tiles in Egypt; chilli in Mexico; medicines in Argentina; microbiological regents in Saudi Arabia; electrical, medical devices, and household appliances i n B r a z i l ; v e t e r i n a r y pharmaceuticals, feed additives, and machinery in Russia
Most non-tariff measures (NTMs) are domestic rules created by countries with an aim to protect human, animal or plant health and environment. NTM may be technical measures like regulations, standards, testing, certification, pre-shipment inspection or non-technical measures like quotas, import licensing, s u b s i d i e s , a n d g o v e r n m e n t procurement restrictions.
When NTMs become arbitrary, beyond scientific justification, they create hurdles for trade and are called NTBs (non-tariff barriers).
India’s exports of basmati rice, c h i l l i e s , t e a a n d m a n y o t h e r agricultural products face difficulty in foreign markets due to the higher use of pesticides and fungicides.
The traces of pesticides left in treated products are called ‘residues’ and a maximum residue level (MRL) is the highest level of a pesticide residue that is legally tolerated in food or feed.
NEW DELHI: The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has announced p
(
establishment of 20 Gati Shakti cargo terminals in 2024. This initiative is part of the government’s Gati Shakti Master Plan aimed at enhancing logistics infrastructure and boosting freight transportation efficiency across India.

T h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t o f
20 Gati Shakti cargo terminals aligns with India’s vision to build world-class logistics infrastructure capable of handling diverse cargo volumes e f f i c i e n t l y. I t r e f l e c t s t h e government’s proactive approach towards enhancing transportation infrastructure, stimulating trade, and bolstering India’s position as a global logistics hub.
Overall, the planned RFQs for Gati Shakti cargo terminals mark a significant milestone in advancing India’s logistics infrastructure, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and economic growth t h r o u g h s t r e a m l i n e d f r e i g h t transportation networks.

GENEVA: Global trade trends turned positive in the first quarter of 2024 (January-March) after contracting in 2023. According to the latest update from UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) released on Tuesday, the value of trade in goods and services increased sequentially by about 1% and 1.5%, respectively.
"This surge, fuelled by positive trade dynamics for the US and developing countries, particularly large Asian developing economies, is expected to add approximately $250 billion to goods trade and $100 billion to services trade in the first half of 2024 compared to the second half of 2023," it said.
While global gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecasts remain around 3% for 2024, the short-term trade outlook is cautiously optimistic, UNCTAD said If positive trends persist, international trade in 2024 could reach almost $32 trillion, though it is unlikely to surpass therecordlevelsseenin2022,itadded
Geopolitical concerns
Global trade performance in 2024 was shaped by several geopolitical
events. Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea led to higher freight costs and disrupted supply chains. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war kept crude oil prices high. US-China trade tensions increased the cost of value chains, while the EU's proposed carbon tax and forest regulations added to the complexities. Additionally, high interest rates, especially in developed economies, hampered trade According to UNCTAD, global trade saw a 3% annual contraction, amounting to roughly $1 trillion, comparedtotherecordhighof$32trillion in 2022. Despite this, the services sector showed resilience with a $500 billion, or 8%, increase over the previous year, while goods trade witnessed a 5% decline comparedto2022to$1 3trillion Good and services
During the January-March period, trade growth varied across sectors, with green energy and AI-related products experiencing stronger growth, it said. “The outlook for 2024 remains positive, but geopolitical issues and industrial policies will continue reshaping global trade patterns.”
Although the steep decline in merchandise trade across major economies reversed in the first quarter of 2024, only a few countries, including Russia, the US, India and China, improved their exports.
"Specifically, imports increased for Brazil, the Russian Federation, and the US. On the export side, China and India exhibited very strong quarter-overq u a r t e r e x p o r t p e r f o r m a n c e "Exports also grew for the Russian Federation and the US In contrast, trade continued to decline for Japan and South Africa," it added.
Indian exports registered 7% quarterly growth, while imports fell by 1% during the period In contrast, China's exports rose 9%, while imports remained flat
The US's exports and imports rose by 2% and 3%, respectively
"In Q1 2024, developing countries experienced a positive trend in both imports and exports (about 2% increase) While developed countries saw positive exports (1% increase), their imports remained unchanged QoQ," it added.

GENEVA: India’s dependence for trade on the European Union (EU) and China is rising as global trade has seen a restructuring along the geopolitical lines in the past two years, according to a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
A c c o r d i n g t o t h e U N C TA D estimates, based on national statistics, India’s reliance on the EU and China rose by 1.2 percent annually in 2023, while it declined in the case of Saudi Arabia by 0.6 percent.
The increase in dependence comes at a time when the country is trying to reduce its imports from China and other countries by emphasising manufacturing goods locally, backed by schemes, such as production-linked schemes (PLI) and Quality Control Orders (QCOs).
According to the report, this supply chain shift has happened following the Covid-19 pandemic and the UkraineRussia war, which led to a record increaseinpricesoffoodandfuels
“During the last two years, the g e o g r a p h i c a l p r o x i m i t y o f international trade has remained relatively constant, showing minimal nearshoring or far-shoring trends However, since the latter part of 2022, there has been a noticeable rise in the political proximity of trade.
This indicates that bilateral trade patterns have been favouring trade between countries with similar geopolitical stances (a pattern generally referred to as friendshoring), it further said.
At the same time, the report also noted that there has been an increasing concentration of global t r a d e t o f a v o u r m a j o r t r a d e relationships, although this trend has softened in the last quarter of 2023.
The war has pushed Russia m o r e t o w a r d s C h i n a a s i t s dependence on the latter grew by over 7 1 percent A major reason for the growing dependence has been oil, which was imported heavily by China and India after the EU reduced its share
On the other hand, Ukraine’s dependence on the EU rose by 5.8 percent, while Russia’s declined by 5.3 percent.
Meanwhile, the US also saw its dependence on China reduce by 1 2 percent However, the UK saw its reliance on the EU jump by 1.6 percent.
In terms of sectoral data, trade decline was reported for most sectors e x c e p t f o r p h a r m a c e u t i c a l s , transportation equipment, and road vehicles, which received a boost from the sale of electric vehicles, the report said.
The report further noted that the value of global merchandise trade has experienced continuous decline since mid-2022. However, the trade in s e r v i c e s m a i n t a i n e d g r o w t h throughout most of the period “Overall, the global trade update projects that global trade in 2023 will amount to approximately $31 trillion, contracting by close to $1 trillion (or 3 percent) compared to the record high of 2022,” the report said.
YANGON: The first transaction of over Rs 1 crore pulses export to Myanmar from India was successfully executed under the Rupee-Kyat Trade settlement mechanism on Tuesday, a move which will boost bilateral trade and enhance the usage of local cur rencies “Rupee-Kyat Trade Settlement Mechanism is operational now,” the Embassy of India in Yangon posted on X. “The first transaction of over INR 1 cr of pulses export was
successfully executed by the Yangon office of PNB India We encourage businesses on both sides to benefit from the mechanism,” it said.
The Indian mission in collaboration with the India-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce (IMCC) had organised an awareness event on the use of the R u p e e - Ky a t Tr a d e S e t t l e m e n t Mechanism in February
The Central Bank of Myanmar released the guidelines for payment
procedures under the Special Rupee Vostro Account (SRVA) on January 26.
“To boost bilateral trade and to enhance the usage of local currencies, a R u p e e Ky a t Tr a d e S e t t l e m e n t Mechanism has been operationalised,” the Indian embassy had earlier said in a press release. The establishment of the mechanism, it said, “will simplify trade transactions and make them more efficient. It will reduce costs associated with currency conversions”.

HAMBURG:
In an exciting collaboration with the Hamburg U n i v e r s i t y, H a p a g - L l o y d h a s successfully shipped a mobile Container L ab to India This innovative lab, designed for the research of invaluable manuscripts worldwide, embarked on its journey aboard our vessel “Prague Express” on April 7th. Over the next 18 months, it will be stationed in India to analyze palm-leaf manuscripts that are part of the UNESCO World Documentary Heritage.
Stored in Puducherry, southern India, these manuscripts—about 12,000 in total—date back to the late 18th and 19th centuries. They represent some of the oldest surviving records of their kind, offering historians critical insights into religion, history, astrology, and
medicine from a written culture that spans two millennia and one of the world's most significant literary traditions.
Despite their importance, the origins of these manuscripts are often unknown, leaving many questions about their history unanswered To address this, r e s e

On June 3rd, our containership “Prague Express” safely delivered the Lab Containers to the Kattupalli port in Chennai, marking the start of this ambitious research project.
