The MV MSC Hamburg, a container ship built in 2015, was recently anchored at the Adani Ports Mundra on2ndJuly2023.

Interestingly,thehistoriceventtookplaceinthesame month when the Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Adani International Container TerminalPvt.Ltd.’sjointventurecompleted10years.

Adding yet another marvelous gem to its repertoire, APSEZ has once again proved its mettle in operations andefficiency.MVMSCHamburg,acontainership,hasa carryingcapacityis15,908TEUandhercurrentdraught is reported to be 12 meters. Her length overall (LOA) is 399 meters, and her width is 54 meters. The Mundra Ports achieved a significant feat in the maritime transport sector by safely berthing one of the largest shipsever.

APSEZ Mundra Marine Team ensured and facilitated accurate predictions for the clearance required to berth the ship safely by factoring in all the complex conditions of the vessel and live weather conditions.

In 2021 APSEZ berthed the 13,892 TEU APL Raffles, the largest container vessel to call at any Indian port. The Singapore-registered vessel had a length of 397.88 meters and a breadth of 51 meters.

The Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone recorded the largestportcargovolumewith339MMTinFY23.

Operations in Chabahar are now commercially viable: Sarbananda Sonowal

NEW DELHI: India’s operations at Chabahar Port in Iran have turned “commerciallyviable”in2023;andthe two countries are “rapidly progressing towards signing a longterm contract”, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways SarbanandaSonowal said.

ChabaharisIndia’sfirstoverseas port project and the long-term agreementisvalidfor10yearsandto be extended automatically. It is meant to replace an initial pact which covers India’s operations at Shahid Beheshti terminal in Chabahar port. The initial pact is renewed on an annual basis. Between2018andMay2023,bulkand general cargo traffic at Chabahar was6.56milliontonnes.

Cargohandling

According to Sonowal, with cargo handling at the port going up “significantly” possibilities of future investmentstherecannotberuledout either. For 2023, India is targeting a cargo handling of 13,282 TEUs at the

Shahid Beheshti terminal. As against this, cargo handling in 2022 was 3,096 TEUs.

“The terminal at Chabahar is commercially viable now. And we are in discussions with Iran to sign the long-term contract. It should be through very soon. Scope of future investments in Chabahar will come up for discussions later,” Sonowaltold.

Increaseincargohandling

Data from MoPSW show cargo handled at the Shahid Beheshti terminalofChabaharportinMaywas 3,503 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit),up25percentmonth-on-month, over April. Bulk cargo handled was 288,075 tonnes, up nearly 150 per cent inMay,overApril(116,648tonnes).

“May has been one of the best months in the history of Chabahar, so far,”Sonowalsaid.

Till May, bulk cargo loaded at the terminal was 2,00,578 tonnes; while cargo unloaded was 5,87,884 tonnes, Ministryofficialssaid.

Cargohandledinpreviousmonths of the year was 1,90,548 tonnes (3,459 TEU) in January; 1,06,448 tonnes (1,072 TEU) in February; and 2,22,958tonnes(3,105TEU)inMarch. Long-termcontract

Iranianmediahadrecentlyquoted AliAkbarSafaei,thechiefexecutiveof the country’s Ports and Maritime Organization, where he said the two countries have resolved a major portion of their issues concerning the developmentoftheChabaharPort.

The resolution reportedly came after a series of discussions held during a visit by an Indian delegation toIran,withoptimismexpressedover settling the remaining issues in upcoming meetings for finaliing a long-termcontract.

“As part of the memorandum of understandingamongIran,India,and Afghanistan, so far, an initial investment worth $25 million has been committed to Iran and will be used to develop the port,” hewasquoted.

Nitin Gadkari : 70 % work of India-Myanmar-Thailand

Trilateral Highway complete

NEW DELHI: Union Minister

Shri Nitin Gadkari has said that around 70 per cent construction work on the ambitious IndiaMyanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway has been completed. India, Thailand and Myanmar are working on about 1,400-km-long highway that would link the country with Southeast Asia by land and give a

boost to trade, business, health, education and tourism ties among thethreecountries.

“Around 70 per cent work of the project is completed,” the minister of Road Transport & Highways told PTI in reply to a question on the progress oftheproject.

The highway will connect Moreh in Manipur, India with Mae Sot in

ThailandviaMyanmar.

The minister did not provide details on the timeline for completion andoperationalisationofthetrilateral highway.

The strategic highway project has been delayed. Earlier, the government was aiming to make the highway operational by December2019.

Indian importers must hedge near-term exposures on USD rally risk - analysts

NEW DELHI: Indian importers should hedge their near-term foreign currency payments on expectations thattheUSdollarwillrallyinthenext quarter on the back of more Federal Reserve rate hikes, several analysts said.

The greenback is projected to strengthen against most Asian currencies in the July-September quarter, with a rate hike by the Fed at its July meeting now a near certainty, and the probability of another hike afterthatrising.

"Further Fed hikes and sustained

US economic strength will keep most Asian currencies on the back foot against the USD," in the third quarter of 2023, analysts at BofA Global Research said in its mid-year review note. They expect the Fed to hike rates by 25 basis points in July and in November.

"Whiletherupeeremainsthemost attractive emerging markets currency on carry-to-volatility basis, furtherFedtighteningcouldputcarry positionsatrisk".

Fed Chair Jerome Powell recently said two more rate hikes were likely,

including increases at back-to-back meetings.

BofA sees the USD/INR climbing to 83 in the third quarter from 82.0250 currently. The rupee rose about 0.8 per cent versus the dollar in theApril-Junequarter.

Data this week including US GDP, durable goods, jobless claims and new home sales data have been better-than-expected, indicating that the world's largest economy is holding up well to the aggressive rate hikes to dampen inflation.

Commerce Ministry authorises EPCMD to issue

registration-cum-membership certificates for Exporters

NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry has authorised the newlyestablished Export Promotion Council for Medical Devices (EPCMD) to issue registration-cummembership certificates for exporters of specific items such as bandages and first-aid boxes. Under the foreign trade policy, a Registration-cum-Membership

Certificate (RCMC) is required for exporters to avail benefits under the policy. Holding the certificate can also help exporters in availing benefits with respect to customs and excise.

The certificate is issued by export promotion councils and commodity boards.

The directorate general of foreign

trade(DGFT)inapublicnoticestated that the council has been included in FTP for "issuing RCMC for specific items".

Theseitemsalsoincludehotwater bottles, ice bags, gloves, personal protective garments for surgical/medical use, surgical gowns and drapes, syringes, with or without needles,andstethoscopes.

New Mangalore Port sets record with largest Container Parcel Vessel

MANGALORE : New Mangalore Port handled the highest-ever container parcel size of 2,689 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalentunits)recently.

MSC MAKOTO II, a Panamaflagged container vessel, berthed at New Mangalore Port recently, carried 1,210 TEUs of import containers and 1,479 TEUs of export containers.

Quoting AV Ramana, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA),amediastatementsaid:“We arethrilledtoannouncethecallbythe vessel carrying the highest parcel size of 2,689 TEUs of containers at berth no. 14. This milestone showcases our commitment to deliver world class services to our esteemed clients. In April 2022, JSW Mangalore Container Terminal Pvt Ltd operationalised a mechanised containerterminalatNMPA.JSWhas signed a concession agreement with NMPAtomechaniseberthno.14.

The port’s achievements in container handling at berth no. 14, through JSW Mangalore Container Terminal Pvt Ltd, underscore its determination to contribute to the growth and development of the regional and national economy, itadded.

Visakhapatnam port sets new record with 63,256 TEUs container throughput in June

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam Port Authority achievedaremarkablefeatinJuneby registering a record-breaking throughput of 63,256 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This surpassed the previous highest container handling of 61,468 TEUs, which was accomplished in May of thisyear.

In addition to the impressive container throughput, the port also handled the highest number of container vessels in a single month, with a total of 49, matching the record

set in the previous month. Since its establishment in 2003, the state-ofthe-art container terminal at the VPA has consistently demonstrated its commitment to excellence and has continuously raised the bar for performancestandards.

Strategically situated on the East Coast of India, the Vizag port benefits from its deep and natural draught, enabling it to accommodate large container ships. The growth in container throughput can be attributed to the increased traffic in Export-Import, Coastal, and

Transshipment activities from the mineral-rich hinterland of Visakhapatnam. Various commodities such as rice, maize, ferro, frozen sea food,ChemicalsandPharmaceuticals, and Metals have contributed to this remarkablegrowth.

It provides a summary of our sustainability commitments and our progress in managing our material sustainability issues from 1st January to 31stDecember2022.

This is ONE’s 6th annual sustainability report which follows the standards set by the independent international organization Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the world’s most widely used standards for sustainability reporting, as well as the principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). For the 2nd consecutive year, ONE has additionally obtained limited assurance by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (“PwC”)forselectedsustainabilityinformationassessed againsttheGRI’sSustainabilityReportingStandards.

NYK recognized for achieving Top Tier in U.S. West Coast Vessel Speed Reduction Program

TOKYO: NYK has been recognized for the company’s participation in the Protecting BlueWhalesandBlueSkiesvessel speedreduction(VSR)incentiveprogramalongtheWest Coast of North America, a collaborative effort sponsored by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, among others. For 2022, NYK achieved the Sapphire tier, the top rankingintheprogram.

This program encourages voluntary vessel speed reduction in the Santa Barbara Channel and the San Francisco Bay area to protect whales and cut air pollution. For about seven months from May 1, 2022, the program’s partners analyzed each participating

company’sautomaticinformationsystem(AIS)dataand evaluated the company’s adherence to the request that vesselstransitat10knotsorlessthroughtheVSRzones. More than 85% of NYK operating vessels maintained a navigationspeedoflessthan10knots,ahigherratethan inthelastfouryears.

NYK will use the incentive of US$20,000 to address social and environmental issues under the NYK Group SustainabilityInitiative.

WCO Knowledge Academy for Customs and Trade: Empowering the Next Generation

BRUSSELS: From 26 to 28 June 2023, the World Customs Organization (WCO) hosted the WCO Knowledge Academy for Customs and Trade at its Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. This summer Academy served as a catalyst for professional growth and knowledge enhancement, bringing together an esteemed cohort of participants comprising Customs officers, industry leaders, and academic experts, all united by their passion for advancing Customsandtradepractices.

Sinceitsinceptionin2011underthevisionaryleadership of Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, WCO Secretary General, the Knowledge Academy has flourished and evolved into a pivotal platform for professional development. Marking its 13th edition, the Academy has enabled participants to stay ahead of emerging trends and challenges in the realm of CustomsandTrade.

Settingthestageforanimmersiveanddynamiclearning experience, the Academy commenced with a captivating session titled “Leadership Talks.” In the subsequent segments of the Leadership Talks, the Academy welcomed DeputyDirectorsfromvariousWCOdirectorates,including Gael Grooby, Deputy Director of Tariff and Trade Affairs; Brendan O’Neil, Deputy Director of the Facilitation SubDirectorate; Stefan Kirsh, Deputy Director for Compliance and Enforcement; and Tafili Ebenezer, Deputy Director of

Capacity Building. These seasoned experts engaged with participants, further enriching the learning experienceandprovidinginvaluable perspectives on the critical functions and collaborative efforts withintheWCO.

Dedicated primarily to the Harmonized System (HS), the second day of the Academy delivered a deep dive into this fundamentalframeworkthatunderpinsinternationaltrade. Throughaseriesofimmersivesessions,participantsgained comprehensive insights into the intricacies of HS classification. The practical knowledge gained in these sessions empowered participants to enhance accuracy and efficiency in their daily Customs practices. This in-depth exploration provided practical knowledge that participants couldimmediatelyapplyintheirdailyCustomsoperations.

The third and final day of the Academy continued to captivate participants with valuable insights. Engaging in interactive sessions, attendees explored HS classifications through practical working examples. Additionally, participants delved into the essential elements of Rules of Origin and Valuation, gaining a profound understanding of these vital componentsofCustomsprocedures.Thesehands-onsessions equipped participants with practical tools and techniques to enhance their accuracy and efficiency, enabling them to navigatethecomplexCustomslandscapewithconfidence.
