MUMBAI: Mumbai Port handled all time high cargo of 67.25 million tonnes during the FY 23-24 surpassing the previous all-time high of 63.61 million tonnes handled during FY 22-23, in spite of competition from Private and Minor Ports. The year on year increase is 6.14 %.

Major commodities that increased are:

1. Crude Oil and POL Products handled at Jawahar Dweep & Pir Pau increased by 6 73 % and 11 18 % respectively.

2. Iron & Steel handled in Docks (Indira dock + O.C.T.) increased by 36.55 %.

Sailing across the Red Sea:

Despite concerns about security, the vast majority of vessels navigate safely

Despite ongoing geopolitical issues in the region sur rounding the Red Sea, it remains a major transit route powering the global economy Every year, around 17,000 ships pass through the Suez Canal, accounting for 12% to 15% of global trade. The vast majority of vessels transit the Red Sea without incident. Since the crisis started in October, 2023, there have been 60 such security instances—representing a very small fraction of the total traffic which passes through the Red Sea during this period. Moreover, from the instances reported, very few can be considered critical.

Even though trade traffic in this route has reduced to between 40% and 50% compared to pre-crisis levels, the Red Sea route is still a vital trade route for the global economy and is essential for quicker and cost-effective connectivity between Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America Enhanced security measures, supported by global naval powers providing escorted passage for ships through trade lanes, are expected to contribute

Shipping companies are also actively contributing by exercising increased vigilance, adhering to recommended routes, maintaining heightened crew awareness, and fostering communication with regional authorities and security forces.

Given the ongoing security concerns, shippers can undertake the following precautions to safeguard themselves from any incidents.

• Since navies from across the globe have been deployed in this region to protect these sea lanes, shipping companies should plan their voyages across the region accordingly as well as coordinate their activities with the deployed naval forces.

• Take into account current information on geopolitical tensions, security incidents, and weather conditions adjusting cargo routes accordingly. Utilise technology to monitor vessel movements and update routes as needed to avoid high-risk areas.

• Develop and implement robust emergency response and crisis management plans to suit the specific challenges of navigating chokepoints

• War and Piracy Insurance: Specifically covers losses arising from war, terrorism, piracy, and o t h e r m a l i c i o u s a c t s . I t c a n p r o v i d e compensation for damage to the vessel, cargo, crew injuries, and even ransom demands.

• Loss of Hire Insurance: Covers the loss of income for the ship owner if the vessel is delayed due to an incident in the conflict zone.

• General Average Disbursement Insurance: General average refers to collective damage to both a ship and its cargo. If a ship is in danger, it m a y b e n e c e s s a r y t o m a k e sacrifices to safeguard the ship itself, its crew, and its cargo. All the costs associated with the salvage operation including the value of any goods sacrificed are shared proportionally between the ship owners and the cargo owners.

With these risk mitigation measures and considering the statistically miniscule number of vessels which have been critically impacted by the Red Sea crisis—the route through the Red Sea is still a quick, cost effective, and viable option for powering global trade.

Deendayal Port Authority handled 132.3 MMT cargo in FY24

GANDHIDHAM: Deendayal Port Au t h o r i t y h a n d l e d 132.3 mt of c a r g o i n F Y 2 4 , compared t o t h e 137.561 mt handled in FY23, but hit the target of 132 mt set by the Ministry of

Ports, Shipping and Waterways for the fiscal year. Deendayal Port handles dry bulk, liquid bulk, oil, and containers, among other cargo. The port is expected to handle 200 mt of cargo by 2030, according to the Maritime India Vision 2030, a ten-year blueprint for the maritime sector.

Deendayal Port has the capacity to handle 269.10 mt of cargo a year.

India working on alternative logistic corridors linking India with the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean : S Jaishankar

AHMEDABAD: Union Minister o f E x t e r n a l A f f a i r s ( M E A ) Shri S Jaishankar while addressing b u s i n e s s m e n a n d t r a d e r s a t Ahmedabad recently, said “India was working on alternative logistic corridors that will link the Pacific with the Atlantic Ocean. The shipping lines passing through the Suez Canal are in danger. They are in danger because of drone and missile attacks and Somalian pirate attacks. We have sent 21 Naval vessels to the region. For a large economy like us, it is not enough to have one or two connectivity corridors,” while speaking on the topic of “International Policy:

A catalyst to Viksit Bharat”. ‘Exploring new corridor’

Last year, we decided to make an alternative connectivity corridor that s t a r t s f r o m t h e G u j a r a t a n d Maharashtra coasts and passes through UAE, Saudi Arabia, the Mediterranean Sea and Europe. This will ensure we are not too dependent on the Suez Canal. The entire world is thinking about reducing risks. So we will have to look for connectivity partners Similarly, we are also working on another corridor that links Chabahar port (in Iran) with Russia. We are also exploring a new corridor that will open up due to the melting

polar ice caps and link Valvadistock, Russia and Europe,” the minister said.

Jaishankar said towards the East, India is looking to build a highway that will link Manipur in India with Vietnam “If we are successful in this, India will be at the centre of a corridor extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific,” he added. The minister said apart from logistic partners, India will also need to look for technology partners, investment partners and the brand itself for a global audience “Foreign Policy can be very useful for the business community,” he added

Vizhinjam Port will be operational by Onam : Adani Group

PURAM: Adani Group stated that Vizhinjam I n t e r n a t i o n a l Po r t Project will become operational by Onam, in spite of so much protests and controversies. A trial run of port operations will begin in May using large barges loaded with containers.

Meanwhile, Adani has started d i s c u s s i o n s o n c o m m e r c i a l transactions with international shipping companies P radeep Jayaraman, who took over as the new CEO of the port, said the project can be completed as an Onam gift to them.

The breakwater of the harbour has a total length of 2959 metres, out of

which 2800 metres have already been completed. This accounts for 90 per c e n t o f t h e t o t a l l e n g t h . T h e construction of the first phase of the berth and yard is also in its final stage. Out of the 800-meter berth, 650 meters have been completed so far.

It is required to have a total of 32 cranes, including 24-yard cranes and eight ship-to-shore cranes, for the construction of the port. These cranes will be fully installed in the month of April A 1 7-kilometre road is currently under construction, which will connect theporttothenationalhighway

A 3,80,000-square-meter container yard is to be constructed to unload the containers arriving from the ship. In the first phase, about 100,000 square

meters of work have been completed.

E i g h t b u i l d i n g s h a v e b e e n completed for various purposes at the port. Work is in progress, including a fire protection system.

The pilot-cum-survey vessel, mooring launches, and navigation equipment required for various purposes will soon be delivered to Vizhinjam. Four tugs have also been set up to guide the ships to the port.

Once operational, Vizhinjam will become a key hub in the port network that the Adani Group is creating from Haifa in Israel to Colombo in Sri Lanka. Adani Group is investing Rs 10,000 crore for the second and third phases of the port’s development by 2028.

Red Sea crisis end to reignite Container Shipping challenges

LONDON: Clarksons’ latest container shipping report said that weak “underlying” supply-demand fundamentals will materialise once the RedSeadisruptioncomestoanend

Boxship fleet growth is estimated at 9% this year, outpacing demand growth of approximately 4% In the second half of2024,assumingthattheRedSeacrisis has been resolved, the challenges seen after the Covid-19-fuelled boom could rear their head again.

Clarksons said, “The situation is fluid, but at present a resolution seems unlikely in the short-term, and disruption would likely some time to unwind should the situation ease; our current ‘base case’ forecast basis 1H 2024 of disruption would lead to

around 6% uplift in full year 2024 TEUmile trade). Clearly this ‘boost’ will be focused in 1H in this scenario and demand trends would be expected to ‘normalise’ once disruption ends, though a longer period of rerouting would have a greater impact.”

The world’s largest shipbroker noted that to manage the tonnage shortage due to the longer voyage times round the Cape of Good Hope, operators have been running vessels at higher speeds. Operating speeds averaged 14 knots in late March, up 1% from the 2023 average.

In February, 18 container ships of 145,000 TEUs were delivered, bringing year-to-date deliveries to 67 units of 449,000 TEU, a record for

deliveries in capacity ter ms.

Deliveries in 2024 are currently projected to reach 2.7 million TEUs, an all-time record, while a further 2 million TEUs is scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026 – both double the 2019-2022 average.

Should the Red Sea crisis fade away, 2025 will be a challenging year, as the fleet is expected to grow by more than 5%, despite more potential for vessel demolitions.

However, stricter environmental regulations mean that operators will have to resume slow-steaming once Suez Canal crossings resume. The supply-demand gap could also be narrowed as demand growth is forecast at 3% in 2025.

India-EEU officials hold talks for FTA negotiations: Report

NEW DELHI: To boost economic ties between India and the five-nation Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) bloc, senior officials from both the sides held detailed talks in March to formally start negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA), said a report by PTI.

The five members of the EEU are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

“Senior officers of both sides have met on March 28 here and have discussed formally starting talks for the FTA,” PTI quoted an official.

Two feasibility studies have already been conducted on the proposed agreement, said the report citing the official.

In such FTAs, two or more trading p a r t n e r s e i t h e r r e m o v e o r

significantly cut customs duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them These free trade pacts provide greater market access to Indian goods and services.

Indian exporters from sectors s u c h a s e n g i n e e r i n g g o o d s , electronics and agriculture may get an edge from the India-EEU FTA

In the EEU bloc, Russia is India’s top trading partner with a bilateral trade worth USD 49.4 billion in fiscal year 2023 (FY23).

India’s exports to Russia stood at USD 3.14 billion in 2022-23, while imports were at USD 46.2 billion due to an increase in crude oil imports.

The bilateral trade with Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan was at USD 134.26 million, USD 111.81 million, USD 641.62 million, and USD

56 56 million, respectively, in fiscal year 2022-23.

A similar free trade agreement was signed by India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The members of this bloc are Iceland, L i e c h t e n s t e i n , N o r w a y, a n d Switzerland.

Exports from India soared 11.9 per cent year-on-year to USD 41.4 billion in February 2024, the highest level since March 2023, boosted by sales of d r u g s a n d p h a r m a c e u t i c a l s , engineering and electrical goods.

Exports to new markets like Africa, Latin America and Central Asia, have witnessed a significant influx of USD 234 million worth of goods, including cars, two- and three-wheelers, and precious metals, during the AprilDecember2023 period.

World Bank projects Indian economy to grow at 7.5% in 2024

WA SHINGTON: The Indian economy is projected to grow at 7.5 per cent in 2024, the World Bank has said, revising its earlier projections for the same period by 1.2 per cent. Overall, growth in South Asia is expected to be strong at 6.0 per cent in 2024, driven mainly by robust growth in India and recoveries in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the World Bank said in its latest South Asia Development Update.

According to the report, South Asia is expected to remain the fastestgrowing region in the world for the next two years, with growth projected to be 6.1% in 2025.

"In India, which accounts for the bulk of the region's economy, output

growth is expected to reach 7.5% in FY23/24 before returning to 6.6% over the medium term, with activity in services and industry expected to remain robust," the bank said in its report. In Bangladesh, output is expected to rise by 5.7% in FY24/25, with high inflation and restrictions on t r a d e a n d f o r e i g n e x c h a n g e constraining economic activity.

“South Asia's growth prospects remain bright in the short run, but fragile fiscal positions and increasing climate shocks are dark clouds on the horizon," said Martin Raiser, World Bank Vice President for South Asia. "To make growth more resilient, countries need to adopt policies to boost private investment and strengthen

employment growth," he said.

In India, the World Bank said, economic activity surprised on the upside in 2023Q4, with growth of 8 4 per cent from a year ago "The expansion was supported by rapid increases in investment and g o v e r n m e n t c o n s u m p t i o n . More recent survey data point to continuedstrongperformance,"itsaid.

"In India, output growth is projected to reach 7.5 percent in FY2023/24 on the back of robust growth in Q3 of FY2023/24. Growth is expected to moderate to 6.6 percent in FY2024/25 before picking up in subsequent years as a decade of robust public investment yields growth dividends," the bank said.

ONE hosted 3rd Container Shipping Summit in Nagasaki: Bringing together Experts and Academia from various countries

ENGINEERING INC. It has been a year since the first summit took place in Nagasaki in 2023. At the summit, ONE employees, industry experts and academic leaders from Japan, Singapore, and China discussed the challenges facing the container shipping industry regarding sustainable future of supply chains and society

The mayor of Nagasaki City, Mr. Shiro Suzuki, said in his opening speech as the Guest-of-Honour, “Dejima was constructed in 1636 and played a large role in the modernization of Japan, serving as its only window to the world. Being approximately 400 years since Dejima’s construction, it is very significant to see new people-to -people exchanges taking place and innovations being produced from this same Nagasaki.” And he said “I hope that this summit will lead to the development of the marine shipping industry, as well as the build-out of each other’s networks.”

The summit featured three topics of panel discussions, including "Examining Next-Generation Fu e l s : Tr e n d s , R i s k s & S a f e t y C u l t u r e ” , “Decarbonizing Maritime Supply Chain: An Ecosystem Development Approach” and “Nurturing Tomorrow’s Maritime Leaders: Talent & Development Strategies”.

The panel discussions were attended by many prominent researchers from Kobe University, Kyushu University, Nagasaki University, National University of Singapore (NUS), Shanghai Maritime University, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, and University of Tokyo, alongside distinguished experts from the shipping industry, including the National Maritime Research Institute, MTI, Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI), and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance.

The discussion on next-generation fuels explored current trends, prospects, policies and transitions towards next-generation fuels aimed at decarbonization

in various countries. The panellists also stressed the importance of establishing guidelines for safety handling of ammonia fuel as well as the challenges in increasing the use of methanol fuel.

The session on industry-academia collaboration highlighted strategies for promoting decarbonization across supply chains and advocated for sustainable mechanisms to share environmental costs. Participants also mentioned the need to standardize global regulations and ensure transparency and fairness in promoting green fuels.

The talent development session focused on attracting and nurturing professional talent within the maritime industry through collaborations between companies, education institutions, and maritime stakeholders. Vibrant discussions included enhancing the industry’s appeal, defining required skill sets, and communicating its attractiveness.

In partnership with stakeholders from research institutions and the maritime industry, ONE offers a platform that transcends the boundaries of industry, academia, and nationality, fostering dialogue and solutions to address the developmental and challenging aspects of the shipping industry By acting as a bridge between diverse perspectives and expertise, ONE aims to work with numerous stakeholders to address the various challenges within container shipping while enhancing supply chain efficiency and making meaningful contributions to society

Sanjay Nayar takes charge as ASSOCHAM President

NEW DELHI: Mr. Sanjay Nayar, the former KKR India Chief Executive, a well-known name in the global financial markets, has assumed charge as President of Industry Chamber Assocham. He has replaced Ajay Singh, Co-Founder of low-cost airline SpiceJet, who has completed his tenure at the apex industry chamber

Nayar, who is now Founder and Chairman, Sorin Investment Fund, brings with him an experience of four decades in global financial and capital markets, including 25 years at Citi and nearly 14 at KKR, before retiring last year He had established KKR India operations in 2009 after leaving Citigroup.

“During my Presidency, my Assocham colleagues and I will work closely with the government for India to become a developed nation with a multi-fold increase in

t h e c o u n t r y ’ s p e r capita income and continuation of bold e c o n o m i c g r o w t h I l o o k f o r w a r d t o supporting the efforts being made by the industry to achieve the c o u n t r y ’ s sustainability goals,” Nayar said.
