Will help make India centre of the logistics world: Gautam Adani

MUMBAI: The time is ripe for us to leverage India’s geographic location and help make our nation become the centre of the logistics world, Adani Group Chairman, Gautam Adani, said recently

Addressing the 51st India Gem and Jewellery Awards here, Gautam Adani said that in the case of logistics, what started as a port jetty, to import coal in 1998,

JNPA’s Inter-Terminal Transfer (ITT) :

Redefining Logistics Efficiency

Navi Mumbai: JNPA’s inter-terminal transfer (ITT) system for tractor trailers (Tts), in place since March 2015, has redefined logistics efficiency. With 500-700 TTs moving seamlessly between terminals daily, it has streamlined transport, eased road congestion, and significantly reduced both transport time and logistics costs.

has gone on to become the country’s largest port business.

“This business today spans a network of 15 national and 5 international ports and, thereby, allows us to expand into building a network of integrated logistic nodes,” he told the gathering These nodes now are made up of ports, rail, highways, warehouses, inland container depots, fulfilment centres, and trucking in a way no other company has ever achieved in the world.

Gateway Distriparks launches New Service to Kandla Port

MUMBAI/DELHI:

Gateway Distriparks

Mr. Prem Kishan Dass Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director –Gateway Distriparks, commented, “Expanding our services to Kandla Port marks a significant milestone for Gateway Distriparks While we anticipate initial volumes to be modest, we expect substantial growth in the future Importantly, this expansion

expenditure or new rake deployment. By utilising our existing fleet through efficient hub-and-spoke operations, we demonstrate the strength and flexibility of our network. This approach allows us to meet increasing demand w i t h o u t i n c u r r i n g e x t r a c o s t s , ultimately benefiting our customers and shareholders.”

The new service features doublestack operations to Viramgam, Garhi, and Faridabad. Additionally, containers from Ludhiana and Kashipur will be double-stacked via the company’s hubs, optimising efficiency and transit times.

Will help make India centre of the logistics world: Gautam Adani

“This journey has taken us deep into the Middle East — all the w a y i n t o t h e Mediterranean through Israel — and into the heart of Africa. For me, it is no more just about ports. It is now about leveraging India’s geographic location and doing our part to help make our nation become the centre of the logistics world,” the Adani Group Chairman noted.

Likewise, what started as a single power plant in 2007, has now become not just India’s largest private thermal power generation company but has also allowed the A d a n i G r o u p t o e x p a n d i n t o adjacencies

‘IMEEC

“This expansion has seen us become India’s largest private transmission company, largest private power distribution company, largest mine developer and operator, as well as the only company that successfully took up the challenge of cross-border supply of power to help a neighbouring nation,” Gautam Adani told the gathering.

Furthermore, it has allowed the company to move into the area of renewable energy

“Today, we are India’s largest solar panel manufacturing company as well as the world’s largest singlesite renewable energy facility, well on our way to generating 30 GW of power, spread over a massive single span of land of more than 500 square

kilometres,” the Adani Group Chairman emphasised.

“ Ye t a n o t h e r e x a m p l e o f challenging the status quo is our move into the airport business. In less than three years, we became the largest airport operator in the country We then built our adjacencies that made us the largest airport logistics player with almost 40 per cent of India’s air cargo and have now undertaken the world’s largest slum redevelopment initiative, the Dharavi project,” he stressed.

Gautam Adani further stated that for him, Dharavi is not just about slum redevelopment. “It is about restoring dignity, creating a sustainable ecosystem, and changing the status quo for over one million residents.”

will be source of regional peace and stability’ said French Foreign Trade Minister

NEW DELHI: The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) will enhance strategic supply chains and boost security in economic and energy sectors, and it will be a source of regional peace and stability, French Foreign Trade Minister Sophie Primas has said.

In an interview quoted in PTI, Primas said France looks at the proposed corridor as a key to regional integration, stability, and an opportunity to hasten the decarbonisation of trade routes.

B i l l e d a s a p a t h b r e a k i n g initiative, the IMEEC envisions vast r o a d , r a i l r o a d , a n d s h i p p i n g networks among India, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Europe, aiming to ensure integration among Asia, the Middle East, and the West “This project is vital for national i n t e r e s t s , e n h a n c i n g s t r a t e g i c supply chains and boosting security in economic, energy, and health sectors across India, Europe, and the Middle East,” Primas said at the end of her three-day visit to India

The IMEEC was firmed up on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in S e p t e m b e r l a s t y e a r i n D e l h i

An agreement was signed by India, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the US, and some other G20 partners for the corridor Following the announcement at the G20 summit, France promptly appointed Gerard Mestrallet as a dedicated sherpa for the IMEEC p r o j e c t . T h e F r e n c h s h e r p a accompanied Primas during her visit to India from November 27 to 29.

“France also sees this corridor as a key to regional integration, stability, and a n o p p o r t u n i t y t o h a s t e n t h e decarbonisation of trade routes, providing substantial business prospects for French companies in logistics, energy, and digital sectors,” the French trade minister said. “France is keen to lead in this initiative, positioning Marseille as the strategic European gateway for the corridor,” she added.

Outlining France’s vision for the mega project, Primas said the corridor will also act as a source for regional peace and stability. There has been a delay in rolling out the initiative on the ground due to the precarious security situation in West Asia. The IMEEC also envisages an electricity cable network,

a hydrogen pipeline, and a high-speed data cable network to facilitate overall economic growth in the partner countries.

The project is also seen as an initiative by like-minded nations to gain strategic influence in the face of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has faced increasing criticism over lack of transparency and disregard for the sovereignty of the nations. The BRI is a mega connectivity project that connects China with Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Russia, and Europe.

India has been holding talks with various key stakeholders, including F r a n c e a n d t h e U S , o n t h e implementation of the IMEEC. In an address at a business conclave in September, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the IMEEC would become a “cornerstone of global connectivity ” “The IMEEC aims to become a cornerstone of global connectivity, providing a robust framework for boosting trade and other flows across critical regions,” he said. “By integrating innovative logistics and sustainable practices, it holds the potential to significantly contribute to both growth and resilience,” he added.

Adani Ports-led Colombo project right on track: Sirimewan Ranasinghe, Chairman, SLPA

COLOMBO: The A d a n i P o r t s - l e d

C o l o m b o p o r t terminal project is on track and there is no reason to complain, Sirimewan

R a n a s i n g h e , C h a i r m a n o f Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) said on Sunday, 1st December

Adani Ports is implementing the Colombo port terminal project in a j o i n t v e n t u r e w i t h S L PA a n d John Keells Holdings.

“The SLPA is satisfied with the progress on the Adani Ports-led project in Colombo,” Ranasinghe said on phone from Colombo “We do periodic reviews and there is no reason to complain so far This project is on track.”

Ranasinghe’s comment was in r e s p o n s e t o a q u e r y o n t h e progress of the project. Last month, US authorities had alleged that some Adani group executives were part of

a scheme to pay bribes in a power project in India.

Ranasinghe, who was appointed in October to the post, said the current dispensation’s motto is upholding transparency in every project. He said the indictment has no relation with the project in Sri Lanka.

The Colombo port terminal project is being developed to take advantage of Sri Lanka’s location on major shipping routes. The plan is to make the terminal operational in February 2025.

I n N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 3 , t h e U S International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) announced a $553 million investment in the project It is still conducting due diligence on the project and no funds have been disbursed so far, it is learnt.

Sri Lanka, with Anura Kumara Dissanayake as President, has shown interest in continuing with all projects agreed to with India during the past

dispensation and is banking on New Delhi’s support to boost the economy Dissanayake, who plans to visit New Delhi in the middle of this month, has himself not spoken against the Adani port project. Many of his advisers before have felt that cancelling a big project will send the wrong signal about the investment climate in the island nation

The Port of Colombo is the largest and busiest transhipment port in the Indian Ocean. The new terminal aims to serve the economies around the Bay of Bengal.

Trump threatens 100% tariff on Brics nations if they try to replace dollar

W A S H I N G T O N D C : U S

President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on a bloc of nine nations if they were to create a rival currency to the US Dollar

“ T h e i d e a t h a t t h e B R I C S Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” Trump wrote on social media on Saturday.

Major world powers China and Russia are part of the Brics alliance, along with Brazil, India, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.

During the US election, Trump campaigned on implementing widespread tariffs. He has escalated threats of steep levies in recent days.

This latest message from Trump, who will take office next year on 20 January, was aimed at the Brics, a bloc of mostly emerging economies.

Leading politicians in Brazil and Russia have suggested creating a Brics currency to reduce the US dollar’s dominance in global trade. But internal disagreement has slowed any progress.

“We require a commitment from these countries that they will neither create a new Brics currency nor back any other currency to replace the mighty US dollar or they will face 100% tariffs and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful US economy,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social

“They can go find another sucker,” he said. But some Trump allies have suggested his recent announcements have been negotiation tactics, meant as more of an opening bid than a promise. Asked about the presidentelect’s proposed use of tariffs, Republican Senator Ted Cr uz

responded by noting the “importance of leverage”.

“You look at the threat of tariffs a g a i n s t M e x i c o a n d C a n a d a , immediately has produced action,” the Texan said on CBS News’ Face the Nation on Sunday. On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an unscheduled trip to Trump’s Florida estate Mar-a-Lago, seemingly to head off a potential 25% tariff on Canadian goods heading south.

Tr ump’s pick for Treasur y Secretar y, Scott Bessent, has previously suggested that the president-elect’s threats to impose major tariff hikes were part of his negotiating strategy

“My general view is that at the end of the day, he’s a free trader,” Bessent said of Trump in an interview with the Financial Times before he was nominated for the role.

Trump’s 100% tariff threat unrealistic, India must focus on local currency trading: GTRI

NEW DELHI: US President-elect Donald Trump’s statement to BRICS countries to impose 100% customs duties if the group would replace the US dollar is unrealistic, and India should focus on developing a workable local currency trading system, think tank GTRI said Sunday It said that the tariffs of this scale would harm the American consumers only as it would push prices on imports, disrupt global trade, and risk retaliation from key trading partners.

“Trump’s threat to impose 100% tariffs on countries adopting a BRICS currency is unrealistic and more symbolic than practical. For India, the prudent approach is to focus on making local currency trading w o r k a b l e b y e s t a b l i s h i n g a transparent and open currency exchange,” said GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava.

Emphasising that it is the actions of the US that have pushed many countries to seek alternatives to the

US dollar, GTRI said: “The US has a history of leveraging its influence over global financial systems, such as the SWIFT network, to impose unilateral sanctions”.

India’s best interests lie neither in the domination of the US dollar nor in fully adopting a BRICS currency at this stage, Srivastava noted, adding that no single country, including the US, can unilaterally dictate global economic policies without facing repercussions.
