MOSCOW: The consecutive pilot services along diverse routes of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) in the past months are finally bearing fruits for the Russian Railways. RZD launched the first regular INSTC Container train service linking Chekov near Moscow and the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. The service will, for now, offer one monthly roundtrip.
The new train service will transit via Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan before crossing Iranian territory to link with further destinations, like India, via sea services. According to RZD, after crossing Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, the train will stop at the Sarakhs station in Iran, where containers will be reloaded on standard gauge (1435 mm) before they continue their trip. “On the way back, the train will also be loaded with products for the Russian market,” said RZD.
For the record, the INSTC is not a single-dimensional corridor It links north to the south; however, it does not follow just one route. In contrast, it follows different branches: the western, the middle and the eastern. The western, which still needs to be completed, crosses Russia, the Caucasus region (Azerbaijan) and Iran before reaching Iranian ports. The middle one goes from Russia through the Caspian Sea before reaching Iran. The eastern one, which is the one for RZD’s first official service, involves Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan and, of course, Iran All of them abut to Iranian ports and sea connections to other destinations, mainly India.
RZD started doing tests through this branch as early as July, when it sent the first Container train destined for India, specifically the Port of Nhava Sheva. That test train followed the same route as the official service will follow However, between July and late October, RZD did not reduce to one pilot service, as at least six more trains followed the route before opening it up for traffic.

NEW DELHI: Chabahar Port and INSTCwillhelptoimproveconnectivity andunlocktheeconomicpotentialofthe region, saidUnionMinisterforExternal AffairsS.JaishankarattheSCOCouncil ofHeadsofGovernmentmeeting.
WhilerepresentingIndiaattheSCO Council of Heads of Government meeting on Tuesday, 1st November, Union Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar underlined that the ChabaharportandInternationalNorthSouth Transport Corridor will help to improve connectivity and unlock the economic potential of the region. The 21st SCO meeting which was conducted inavirtualformatfocusedmainlyonthe trade and economic agenda of the Organization.
“Represented India at the meeting ofSCOCouncilofHeadsofGovernment which has just concluded. Underlined that we need better connectivity in the
SCO region built on centrality of interests of Central Asian states,” Jaishankartweeted.
“Will unlock the economic potential of this region in which Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor could become enablers. Connectivity projects should respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Member States and respect internationallaw,”headded.
The Minister also highlighted the Mission LiFE project launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi which aspires to replace the ‘use and dispose of’economy, withacirculareconomy.
“Our total trade with SCO Members is only USD 141 billion, which has the potential to increase manifold. Fair market access is to our mutual benefit and the only way to move forward,” the ministersaidinanothertweet.
Union Minister also affirmed that
India looks forward to its ongoing ChairmanshipoftheSCOandisactively engaged in all the activities and dialogue mechanisms of the organization. The leaders of the SCO met last month in Samarkand, during theannualmeetingoftheorganization.
OnthesidelinesoftheSCOmeeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and reviewed the Chabahar Port with other developments, including the Talibantakeover of Afghanistan. The Chabahar Port was developed by India, Iran, and Afghanistan in the Sistan-Balochistan provincetoboostconnectivityandtrade ties. The project ran into several problems after the United States withdrew from the Joint ComprehensivePlanofAction(JCPOA) and re-imposed sanctions on Iran and the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.
MUMBAI: JLL India - Head of Operations, Logistics & Industrial, Chandranath Dey recently said that a yearly growth of 48 per cent was seen in 2019 with net absorption of about 25 million sq ft, while in the pandemic year of 2020, the net absorption in the first three quarters dropped to
13millionsqft.
In spite of rising raw material costs and global inflationary pressures, demand from consumers has led to a rapid V-shaped recovery with doubledigit growth in the warehousing sector. The demand, in fact, is expected to breach previous all-time highs by the
endoftheyear,sayexperts.
The first three quarters of this calendar year saw an all-time high net absorption of 28 million sq ft of warehousing space. In comparison, net absorption declined by 12 million sq ft during the pandemic year from pre-pandemiclevels.
An online tool that provides access to information on members’ anti-dumping and countervailing duty actions
GENEVA:ThenewPortalprovidesa gateway to comprehensive data on all anti-dumping and countervailing duty actions notified by WTO members, displaying information in the form of searchable tables and customizable graphs. The Portal allows users to filter information based on various parameters.
The Portal has been developed in the context of the Open Trade Data Initiative (OTDI), a WTO Secretariat initiative to improve data collection and dissemination, with the aim of updating thedatabasesusedtostoreinformation
onmembers’traderemedyactions.
In this context, in 2021 the Secretariat presented to members an online facility to prepare and submit semi-annual reports on anti-dumping actions–theAnti-DumpingNotification Portal – which significantly simplified thenotificationprocessandreducedthe need for manual checks to ensure consistency in the data. The Countervailing Notification Portal followedin2022.
These new tools supported the Secretariat’s efforts to develop an online platform that could be used to
access data from members’ notifications, which previously were only available in their paper-based reports.
Currently, theTradeRemediesData Portal contains information on antidumping and countervailing actions that led to the application of measures in force on or after 1 January 2020. The Secretariat is working, together with members, on verifying historical data on trade remedy actions which expired prior to 2020. It aims to upload this information to the new Portal in early 2023.
KOLKATA: The free fall in rupee is not a reflection of fundamentals of the Indian economy, which is well poised to attain its $5 trillion dollar goal in the nextfourtofiveyearsevenastheglobal economy is facing headwinds at present, HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh said.
The rupee depreciated about 10% this year as the dollar gained strength against all major currencies, triggering the risks of large capital outflows from
the emerging economies which can have a destabilising effect on trade and finance.
"We have never seen a free fall of the rupee and the present currency depreciation is not a reflection of a change in the fundamentals of the Indian economy," Parekh said Tuesday at an event organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata.

"Fortunately, the present situation does not warrant a warning alarm," he said.
The Japanese yen has depreciated 23% against the dollar this year, while the pound depreciated by 16% and the ChineseYuanby15%.

Continued momentum in the strategic transformation, growth in Logistics, and Ocean contract rates above the previous year were the main drivers of improved performance.
”Our third quarter result was another record and the 16th quarter in a row with year-on-year earnings growth. Ocean freight rates, which have driven the exceptional results we have delivered in 2022, were again up both year-on-year and comparedtothesecond quarter. However, it is clear that freight rates have peaked and started to normalize during the quarter, driven by both decreasingdemandand easing of supply chain congestion. As anticipated all year, earnings in Ocean will come down in the coming periods. Our overall transformation momentum remained very strong as we continue to grow our Logistics business rapidly. For the first time, revenue in Logistics exceeded USD 4bn in one quarter, and we expect to continue to outgrow the market in Logistics based on new customer wins,” says Søren Skou, CEO of A.P. Moller - Maersk.
Revenue for Q3 increased to USD 22.8bn, EBITDA increased to USD 10.9bn and EBIT increased to USD 9.5bn.ProfitwasUSD8.9bnforQ3andUSD24.2bnfor the first nine months. Return on invested capital (ROIC)wasat66.6%forthepast12months.
“With the war in Ukraine, an energy crisis in Europe, high inflation, and a looming global recession there are plenty of dark clouds on the horizon. This weighs on consumer purchasing power which in turn impacts global transportation and logistics demand. While we expect a slow-down of the global economy to lead to a softer market in Ocean, we will continue to pursue the growth opportunities within our Logistics business. As a trusted partner, we are ready to support our customers in rethinking their supply chain needs through what is likely to be a period of a more volatilebusinessenvironment,”saysSørenSkou.
In Ocean, revenue increased over the quarter to USD 18bn and EBIT rose to USD 8.7bn mainly driven by significantly higher freight rates on contract and shipment on routes from Asia to Europe and to NorthAmerica, partlyoffsetbyadecreaseinvolumes and by higher costs related to bunker, container handlingandnetwork.
In Logistics & Services, Maersk continued to invest in its portfolio and capabilities. The acquisition
of LF Logistics was completed, the intended acquisition of Martin Bencher Group was announced, and the warehouse, distribution center and coldstoragefootprintwassignificantlyexpandedwith 21 incremental facilities across key markets like Latin America, Europe and India. Revenue in Logistics grew 60% to USD 4.2bn and EBIT increased to USD 258m mainly due to added revenue from acquisitions and higher volumes, in particular among Maersk’sexistingtop200customers.
In Terminals, revenue grew to USD 1.1bn and EBITincreasedtoUSD357m,mainlydrivenbyhigher volumes and prices as well as the completion of the divestment of the Terminal’s share in Global Ports InvestmentsinRussia.
Demand for logistics services moderated across global supply chains in Q3 2022. Supply-side bottlenecks continued to pose challenges, but there are signs of easing as demand slows and COVID 19related restrictions in China diminish. Freight and charter rates declined in Q3 2022 relative to the previous quarter as the expected normalisation gained momentum through the quarter. Global containervolumesareestimatedtohavedeclined–3% year-on-year in Q3 while global air cargo volumes, measured in CTKs, dropped by 9% in July/August (IATA).Asaresultofslowingeconomicactivity, global container demand is expected to contract between –2 and–4%in2022.
Full year guidance confirmed for underlying EBITDAofaroundUSD37.0bn,anunderlyingEBITof around USD 31.0bn and a free cash flow above USD 24.0bn. Given the unfolding economic slowdown, which is also expected to continue into the coming year, APMM has lowered its outlook for the growth of 2022 global container demand to between –2/-4% decline from previously the lower end of the +1-/1% range. Capex guidance for 2022-2023 remains unchangedatUSD9.0-10.0bn.
