India’s air, rail and sea freight see notable growth in July 2024

New Delhi - India’s domestic air passenger traffic noted a 7 per cent year-on-year increase in July 2024, reaching 1.30 crore passengers. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, this uptick follows a period of slowed growth over the previous nine months, attributed to high airfares and limited capacity due to grounded aircraft.

Since April 2024, domestic air traffic has regained momentum, but July witnessed disruptions due to adverse weather and IT-related issues affecting flight schedules Alongside this, cargo handling and rail freight in the country also saw significant growth.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported that major Indian government ports managed 70.1 million metric tonnes of cargo in July 2024, a 7 per cent increase YoY Likewise, the Ministry of Railways disclosed a total freight traffic of 129.6 MMT, marking a 4.7 per cent YoY growth.

Experts attribute the rise in freight traffic to the operationalization of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor and the partial completion of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor These corridors handle about 10 per cent of total freight on the Indian Railway network, enhancing efficiency and turnaround times.

Vizhinjam seaport: Road project gets fast tracked

Thiruvananthapuram - With Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) signing a loan agreement for Rs 2,100 crore to support road and rail connectivity for the Vizhinjam Port, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has fast-tracked efforts to finalize the geographical drawings for the proposed cloverleaf intersection where the port’s approach road meets NH 66.

The NHAI plans to submit these drawings and a proposal for a temporary road connection between the approach road and NH 66 to the Central Govt for approval within a week. Once approved, construction of the temporary connection will begin, ensuringsmoothaccessforcontainertruckstotheport

“The NHAI has prepared the drawings for the cloverleaf intersection, but we need final approval from the NHAI headquarters.

The proceedings have been completed, and we will send the drawings to New Delhi next week,” an official involved in the port project explained.

“Along with the drawings, we will propose a temporary road connectivity arrangement that involves cutting the median of NH 66 south of the approach road to facilitate the turning of the trucks onto the service roads. Additionally, signage will be installed to regulate vehicle speed We anticipate that the approval process will not be delayed, allowing us to establish the temporary connection soon,” the

official added.

Last week, the state govt, Adani Group, and NHAI held discussions to expedite the road connectivity work for the port, aiming to complete the interim arrangements by the end of the year Although VISL has completed the land acquisition for the approach road, construction has not yet begun. Ports minister VN Vasavan has also stressed the need for temporary measures to ensure the smooth flow of container trucks to and from the port.

The trial run for the port is currently underway, with commercial operations expected to commence in Oct. At present, only transshipment activities are being conducted. Once the roadway container traffic is started, the road connectivity has to be ready Recently, VISL successfully acquired most of the land required for the road connecting the under-construction Vizhinjam International Seaport to NH 66. Out of the 42 cents needed, 35.81 cents have been secured from landowners. VISL is in the process of transferring this land to the Adani Group, which oversees port operations, and has settled Rs 11 crore in compensation with the landowners.

The state budget, presented by Finance Minister K N Balagopal, prioritized the Vizhinjam project, emphasizing the need to accelerate road and rail links to the port. The NHAI approved the road design in line with Indian Road Congress standards on Jan 30 of this year.

Hapag-Lloyd takes deliver of another huge Containership

HAMBURG : HapagLloyd AG announced the successful delivery of the “Hamburg Express” from Hanwha Shipyard.

This new vessel, with a capacity of 23,660 TEU, is the latest addition to Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet. India has Trade Surplus with 151 nations

NEW DELHI : India has recorded trade surplus with as many as 151 countries such as the US and Netherlands, while the country has a trade deficit with 75 nations including China and Russia during the first half of this year, according to think tank GTRI.

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that India does not need to worry about the trade deficit from importing crude oil and coal, however, it must focus on reducing the industrial goods imports, especially from countries like China, as these threaten India’s economic sovereignty

“Between January & June 2024, India had a trade surplus with 151 countries, representing 55.8 per cent of its exports and 16.5 per cent of its imports, totalling USD 72.1 billion,” GTRI said in a report. The biggest surpluses were with the USA (USD 21 billion) and the Netherlands (USD 11.6 billion) during January-June this year.

“India had a trade deficit with 75 countries, which accounted for 44.2 per cent of its exports and 83.5 per cent of its imports, resulting in a USD 185.4 billion deficit, much larger than India’s overall trade deficit,” it said, adding this situation highlights the need to reduce reliance on specific imports and strengthen domestic production.

The data analysis by the think tank also showed that with 23 of 75 countries, India’s trade deficit exceeded USD one billion and these countries accounted for 32.9 per cent of India’s exports and 73.5 per cent of its imports.

The top five countries with the highest trade deficits were China with USD 41.88 billion, Russia with USD 31.98 billion, Iraq with USD 15.07 billion, Indonesia with USD 9.89 billion, and the UAE with USD 9.47 billion.

Remaining 18 countries with trade deficit exceeding USD one billion include Saudi Arabia (USD 9 43 billion), Switzerland (USD 8.46 billion), South Korea (USD 6.93 billion), Japan (USD 6.13 billion), Qatar (USD 5.76 billion), Hong Kong (USD 5.21 billion), Taiwan (USD 4.28 billion), Australia (USD 3.34 billion), Thailand (USD 2.60 billion), Germany

(USD 2 10 billion), Vietnam (USD 2 07 billion), Malaysia (USD 1 49 billion), Venezuela (USD 1 47 billion), Peru (USD 1.10 billion), and Ireland (USD 1.10 billion).

It added that India should not be concerned about the trade deficit with 11 countries that primarily export crude oil, petroleum products, and coal to India such as Angola, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Nigeria.

But the country “may keep a watchful eye about the trade deficit with 4 out of the 23 countries that primarily export gold, silver, and diamonds to India as tariff cuts in gold and silver in this budget from 15 per cent to 6 per cent may lead to rise in imports,” GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said. And these nations include Peru, Switzerland, UAE, Hong Kong.

On China, the report said that during January to June 2024, India exported USD 8.5 billion to China while importing USD 50.4 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of USD 41.9 billion.

This low export and high import makes China India’s largest trade deficit partner.

“Worse, 98.5 per cent of imports from China, or USD 49.6 billion, are industrial goods. China accounts for 29.8 per cent of India’s industrial goods imports. India must invest in deep manufacturing to cut dependence on import of critical industrial products from China,” Srivastava said.

Goods whose share of China in India’s global imports are more than 50 per cent include umbrellas, artificial flowers, man-made filaments, rolling stock, glassware, leather goods, ceramic products, toys, and musical instruments.

It added that the updated trade data for FY24 now shows the USA as India’s top merchandise trade partner, overtaking China.

“The revision added an extra USD 2.8 billion in global imports, bringing India’s total imports to USD 678.2 billion. Of this increase, USD 1.4 billion came from the USA As a result, India’s imports from the USA rose from USD 40.8 billion in May to USD 42.2 billion in August, making the USA India’s top trading partner with a total trade of USD 119.7 billion, surpassing China,” it said.

Blackstone’s Horizon Industrial Parks inks pact to manage India govt’s logistics assets

NEW DELHI : Global investment major Blackstone Group’s India-dedicated logistics platform, Horizon Industrial Parks has emerged as the lead partner to manage the government of India’s portfolio of 13 last-mile logistics assets across the country

The platform owned and managed by Blackstone Real Estate funds has entered into a 45-year partnership agreement for this with the Central Warehousing Corporation, a public warehouse operator established by the government of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. During this period, Horizon Industrial Parks will redevelop the Government-owned assets into modern, Grade-A facilities, tailored to tenants in fast-growing sectors such as e-commerce, retail, third-party logistics, and cold chain.

“Logistics is one of Blackstone’s highest conviction investment themes around the world including in the growing market of India, where we bring scale, operational expertise, and a track record of success. We will bring the best of Blackstone and Horizon and work closely with the CWC to create best-in-class warehouses that provide efficient delivery solutions,” Asheesh Mohta, Head of Real Estate Acquisitions India, Blackstone, told.

Horizon Industrial Parks’ investment commitment in this alliance is expected to be around Rs 700 crore to support the growth of the portfolio.

“This partnership with the world’s largest alternative asset manager and one of the most prominent owners of highquality logistics globally will help monetize our assets into modern warehouses catering to some of India’s top brands. We are aiming to achieve operational excellence and support

The majority of this portfolio is concentrated in last-mile locations across Mumbai, Pune, National Capital Region, Chennai, and Bangalore, within close proximity to residential areas and city centers. With a development potential of 2.4 million sqft, this is one of the largest last-mile logistics portfolios in India. Horizon Industrial Parks along with its affiliates manages 25 industrial and logistics parks spread across more than 1,700 acres with an area of 43 million sqft in 10 key markets in India.

Logistics is one of the biggest asset classes for Blackstone globally as it is the largest owner of warehousing spaces. It has so far invested over $55 billion in this segment and owns more than 575 million sqft of warehouse space world-wide.

Being one of the largest owners of warehousing spaces globally, the group is now moving swiftly to create a large portfolio in India as it is in advanced talks to acquire and build warehousing assets here.

Following the implementation of the Goods & Services Tax (GST) and the emergence of ecommerce, the Indian logistics and warehousing sector is headed towards transformative growth. The government’s decision to accord infrastructure status to the logistics industry is allowing developers access to low-cost funds for their development.

India is currently witnessing a significant boom in its logistics & warehousing market, driven by a combination of economic reforms, infrastructure development, and the rapid growth of e-commerce This sector’s expansion reflects broader shifts in India’s economy, which is increasingly oriented toward efficiency, speed, and modernity in its supply chain and logistics operations.

India’s rapid urbanization,” Amit Kumar Singh, MD, CWC.

APSEZ acquires 80% stake in global OSV operator Astro Offshore for USD 185 Mn

MUMBAI : APSEZ has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 80% stake in Astro Offshore group (“Astro”) in an all-cash deal for USD 185 million, implying an EV of USD 235 million and EV / FY25E EBITDA of 4.4x

The existing promoters of Astro will hold the remaining 20% stake

Astro owns a diverse, modern fleet of 26 Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) and has an impressive roster of Tier-1 customers in the EPC, oil & gas and renewables industry

Acquisition is part of APSEZ’s roadmap to becoming one of the world’s largest marine operators. Astro will enhance APSEZ’s global marine portfolio and add new Tier-1 customers to the roster

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India’s largest ports and logistics company, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 80% stake in Astro, in an allcash deal for USD 185 million, implying an EV of USD 235 million and EV / FY25E EBITDA at 4.4x. The transaction is expected to be value accretive from the first year itself.

Incorporated in 2009, Astro is a leading global OSV operator in the Middle East, India, Far East Asia and Africa. Astro owns a fleet of 26 OSVs comprising of Anchor Handling Tugs (AHTs), flat top barges, Multipurpose Support Vessels (MPSVs) and workboats and provides vessel management and complementary services. During the year ending 30 April 2024, Astro posted USD 95 million revenue and USD 41 million EBITDA. As of 30 April 2024, Astro was net cash positive.

Astro has an impressive roster of Tier-1 customers including NMDC, McDermott, COOEC, Larsen & Toubro and Saipem. Astro is a key player in the offshore construction & fabrication and offshore transportation markets. Astro’s prequalified status with major global EPC contractors and the ability to deliver a variety of ocean-going vessels has enabled it to build a roster of Tier-1 customers in the oil & gas industry.

Astro’s deep experience in supporting the construction and maintenance of offshore platforms, oil & gas fields and subsea facilities allows it to deliver cutting-edge services to clients in the offshore exploration & drilling markets. Astro’s vessels also support multiple operations

including large offshore construction and land reclamation projects.

Astro leverages an efficient mix of medium to long-term contracts with customers, which allows it to maintain high fleet utilization and benefit from increasing charter rates, driven by limited supply of OSV fleet globally.

“Astro’s acquisition is part of our roadmap to becoming one of the world’s largest marine operators. Astro will add 26 OSVs to our current fleet of 142 tugs and dredgers, taking the total count to 168. The acquisition will also give us access to an impressive roster of Tier-1 customers while further consolidating our footprint across the Arabian Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and Far East Asia. We look forward to working closely with Astro’s leadership team and scaling up the current platform,” said Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director & CEO, APSEZ.

“Over the past 15 years, we have created an impressive company trajectory, driven by strategic investments in our OSV fleet and deep relationships with our customers.

This partnership with APSEZ represents a critical inflection point for us. Together, we can accelerate growth to add further scale and diversity to our fleet mix, expand our geographical footprint and deliver more end-to-end solutions to our customers,” said Mr Mark Humphreys, Managing Director, Astro Offshore.

There are no regulatory approvals required and the transaction is expected to close within a month, subject to fulfilment of operational conditions precedent.

India’s cotton exports to Bangladesh hit as Dhaka’s Western garment orders dry up

NEW DELHI : The decline in orders from Bangladesh has had a spillover effect on the Indian textile industry, which supplies raw materials and other input items to Bangladesh. While fresh inquiries for garments are coming to India, Indian cotton exports to Bangladesh have begun to decline, industry executives said.

“New orders are not coming in from Western companies. The workers and the administration understand that production is the lifeline, and they are working overtime to complete orders. Some items are being sourced from India to fulfil the orders, and even more technicians are coming from India,” M Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman of Chennai-based Farida Group, said The Group has investments in Bangladesh’s footwear sector

Ahmed stated that much of the production is taking place in Dhaka and Chittagong, which are relatively isolated from the protests. There were disruptions earlier in August, but normalcy is returning, he said, adding that Western orders will eventually resume due to the favourable duty climate owing to Bangladesh’s status as a least developed country (LDC).

“Western companies are looking at India as an alternative, but much depends on the capacity to deliver, which at the moment has qualitative and quantitative mismatches between Indian and Bangladeshi product offerings,” said ChandrimaChatterjee, Secretary General of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI).

Chatterjee mentioned that garment inquiries are coming in, but the immediate impact on the Indian textile industry has been negative since our exports of input materials to Bangladesh have slowed down. However, our PLI scheme and PM Mitra scheme are steps in the right direction to cater

to national demand, she added.

A garment sector executive who did not wish to be named said that Western companies were already looking at India even before the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh. The European market is increasingly concerned about human rights issues in Bangladesh and is therefore looking at the Indian market.

“The saturation in Bangladesh began some time ago, but orders had not been moving to India. Most of them are going to Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. India has a lot of opportunities, but our product mix is not changing, and the benefits are not arriving,” the executive said on condition of anonymity The Bangladeshi textile and garment industry, which accounts for over 80 per cent of Bangladesh’s total export earnings and contributes approximately 11 per cent to the nation’s GDP

Bangladesh’s $45 billion clothing industry, which employs over four million workers, was already affected due to the weakening electricity generation infrastructure, hit by higher input costs following the start of the Russia-Ukraine war and adverse weather events, according to S&P Global. The situation in Bangladesh continues to be a concern, as Prime Minister NarendraModi and US President Joe Biden discussed the situation in Bangladesh on Monday

Earlier this month, Indian Finance Minister NirmalaSitharaman had also said that the Indian garment and knitted fabric sector is experiencing “a bit of uncertainty” amid the ongoing political developments in the neighbouring country of Bangladesh.

She expressed hope that the interim government there would settle things “sooner rather than later”, adding that efforts are being made to ensure that borders with the neighbouring country are safe.
