COPENHAGEN: Maersk is the fastest growing logistics brand growing 53% according to thelatestrankingbyBrandFinance.

The Danish container shipping company has set its sights on being an integrator for the container sector investing heavily in the logistics sector, while losing its top spotastheworld’slargestcontainerlinetorapidlygrowing MediterraneanShippingCo(MSC).

The Brand Finance Logistics rankings for 2023 said that Maersk had achieved 53% year-on-year brand growth taking it to a value of $7.4 billion “Maersk has now more-than doubled (up 121%) in brand value from its pre-pandemiclevel,”BrandFinancesaid.

State-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), which is helming the new port, had sought permission from the Dahanu Taluka Environment Protection Authority – set up by the Union Government in 1991 as an oversight agency to monitor projects while notifying Dahanu taluka as an ecologically fragile area –tobuildthesatelliteport.

JNPA has approached the DTEPA for NOC after the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) said that “setting up of port in Dahanu Taluka Ecologically Fragile Area may be considered subject to clearances under EIA Notification, 2006, CRZ Notification 2011 and clearance from DTEPA and other rules/regulationsasapplicable”.

“The application filed by JNPA for grant of permission to establish and develop major port, that is Vadhavan port, is granted and the applicant JNPA is permitted to establish and develop Vadhavan port at VadhavaninDahanuTalukasubjecttothevariousterms and conditions imposed by MoEF&CC and its authorities, including EIA as well as carrying out the recommendations made by expert groups and expert agencies in their respective reports,” Justice Arun B Chaudhari,Chairman,DTEPA, wroteinanorder.

In its order, DTEPA also decided to set up a monitoring committee for various aspects related to the development of the port from the beginning as well as a grievance committee to hear grievances of stakeholders andlocalswhoareconcernedwiththeproject.

The plan to set up a port at Vadhavan has been opposed by locals, farmers, and fishermen. To dilute the opposition, JNPA has decided to shift the location of the new port to 4-6 kms inside the sea from the previousonshoresite.

“Thus,now,thelocationisoffshore,and,asaresultof which, the issues about the ecologically fragile area, environmental damage and pollution in Dahanu Taluka would largely be done away with. The legal position is that the offshore area would fall within the complete domain of the Central government, and beyond the area of Dahanu Taluka,” Justice Chaudhari observed in theorder

The move to shift the port location offshore also stemmed from difficulties associated with sourcing of material for reclamation Under the revised plan, the fill material for reclamation, estimated at some 200 million cubic metres, will be sourced from marine borrow pits located off the coast of Daman some 50-65 kms away instead of relying on earth filling due to the ecological sensitivity of the region, the official mentionedearliersaid.

The construction of a new port at Vadhavan is key to the expansion plans of JNPA given the limitations on expansionatNhavaSheva(whereJNPortislocated).

NEW DELHI : Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal in a written reply on August1informedtotheRajyaSabhathatSagarmalaaimsto promote port-led development in the country through harnessing India’s 7,500 km long coastline and 14,500 km of potentiallynavigablewaterways.

The statement also revealed that the implementation of the projects under Sagarmala will be done by the Central Line Ministries, State Maritime Boards, Major Ports and SPVpreferablythroughPublicPrivatePartnership(PPP).

Sagarmala is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways which seeks to unlock unprecedented growth opportunities for the country. According to the statement issued by the ministry, as many as 800 projects have been identified as a part of Sagarmala Programme for implementation at an estimated cost of around5.54lakhcrore.

These projects are broadly classified into pillars of Sagarmala which are – Port Modernization & New Port Development; Port Connectivity Enhancement; Port-linked Industrialization;andCoastalCommunityDevelopment.

“All Sagarmala projects are being implemented by respective agencies and due process of impact assessment with regard to socio-economic (Project Affected People, Rehabilitation & Resettlement, etc.) and environment is done byrespectiveimplementingagencies,”thestatementsaid.

“Further, improvement in livelihood of communities in coastal areas is also undertaken through implementation of projects identified under coastal community development pillarofSagarmalaScheme,”itadded.

All about Sagarmala programme Sagarmala is the flagship Central Sector Scheme of the Ministry of Ports, ShippingandWaterwaystopromoteport-leddevelopmentin the country. The Ministry has issued revised Sagarmala FundingGuidelineson5April,2023.

According to the revised Funding Guidelines, the fund contribution from the Sagarmala Programme (from the budget of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways) in any project will be limited to 50 per cent of the estimated projectcostasperDPRortenderedcost,whicheverislesser.

However,MinistryofPorts,ShippingandWaterwaysmay provide 100% financial assistance for any project based on uniqueness, strategic nature, necessity, merits, financial condition of the Major Port, etc subject to the approval of the Minister in charge of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) sets a new record throughput of handling 66220 TEUs in July-2023.

VPA have set the new miilestone of highest Container handling ever recorded in a month at Visakhapatnam Port, duly surpassing the previous bestContainerhandlingthroughput

of 63256 TEUs performed in June-2023.

VPA Chairman M Angamuthu congratulated all the officers, staff and workers of the port on thisnewachievementinJuly2023.

Railways crosses 500 MT freight loading on cumulative basis in rst 4 months of Financial Year

NEW DELHI: Indian Railways (IR) has crossed the mark of 500 MT freight loading on cumulative basis, yet again, in first 4 months of this Financial Year. From April-July 2023, freight loading of 507.7 MT has been achievedagainstthelastyearloading of501.55MT,animprovementof1.23% over last year loading. Railways have earned Rs 55459 crore against Rs 53731 crore over the last year which is an improvement of 3.22% as compared to the same period lastyear.

From April-July 2023, on cumulative basis, IR’s total earning has been approximately Rs. 80869 Cr. (including coaching, goods, sundry, other coaching earnings) against Rs 75847 Cr. over the last year which is an improvement of 6.62% as comparedtothesameperiodlastyear.

During the month of July 2023, originating freight loading of 123.98MT has been achieved against loading of 122.15MT in July 2022, which is an improvement of approx 1.5% over the last year. Freight revenue of

Rs.13,578CrhavebeenachievedinJuly 2023 against Rs 13,163 Cr freight earnings in July 2022, thereby an improvementofabout3%overlastyear. Following the Mantra, “Hungry For Cargo”, IR has made sustained efforts to improve the ease of doing business as well as improve the servicedeliveryatcompetitiveprices. The customer centric approach and work of Business Development Units backed up by agile policy making helped Railways towards this significantachievement.

Customs Brokers demand Infra changes at Mundra Port

AHMEDABAD: Customs brokers atMundraPortareseekingaseriesof infrastructural changes to expedite loading and clearance of export importshipments.

A representation was recently made by the Mundra Customs Brokers’ Association (MCBA), saying inefficiencies in container movement and slow clearances have led to a surge in logistics costs for exporters andimporters.

Customs brokers have also alleged that poor infrastructure

conditions — waterlogging and muck in cargo transport areas — are making movement of transport vehicles difficult. “There are issues with allotment of empty containers at ports and delays in delivery of import containers. This is aggravated by insufficient manpower and loading equipment,” Mr. Manoj Kotak, Secretary, Mundra Customs Brokers’ Association was quoted as saying recently. “There are longer waiting times for vehicles to enter terminalswhichiscausingdelays.”

Bhaven Thacker, who runs a Container Freight Station, said, “Infrastructureimprovementisamajor concern at yards and in areas around theport,asitishamperingtheshipping process.” After Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in Gujarat, there was a major container pile up at Mundra which continuedforoverafortnight.Afterthat, Adani Ports and SEZ Limited and the customs authorities expedited clearances,andthepile-uphasdropped from12,000 containersafortnightago toaround2,400now,sourcessaid.

India’s accelerating growth can fill the global commodity demand gap left by a slowing China : ANZ

MUMBAI: India’s demand for commodities will likely surge, and it could cover more than half of China’s demand shortfall, especially intheenergysector,ANZbanksaidin a report. China’s growth slowdown is settohurtglobalcommoditydemand, but India could make up for some of thatshortfall,accordingtoANZ.

India’s economic growth is likely to outpace China’s, with the South Asian nation set to become the thirdlargest economy by the end of this decade,thebankpredicted.

That means India’s demand for commodities will likely surge, and it could cover more than half of China’s demand shortfall especially in the energy sector, the bank said in a recentreport.

“India’s demand for commodities isslatedtogrowrapidly,supportedby favorable demographics, urbanization, the expansion of manufacturing and exports and the build-up of infrastructure,” ANZ analystswrote.

India has overtaken China to become the most populous country, and according to ANZ’s data, its rate of urbanization is expected to rise to 40%by2030fromcurrentlevelsof35% — stoking demand for industrial metals and energy commodities which are often associated with a rise in demand for infrastructure and manufacturing.

India will scale up its efforts to decarbonize by 2030, but those efforts may be frustrated by the nation’s rapidlygrowingenergyneeds…

India’s annual demand for major commodities — like oil, coal, gas, copper, aluminum and steel — is expected to rise collectively by more than 5% from now till 2030, the bank estimated.

In comparison, China’s demand for these same commodities will slow to between 1% to 3%, accompanying a projected GDP slowdown to 3.5% growth by the end of this decade. China’s second-quarter GDP expanded 6.3% year-on-year, falling

below market expectations for 7.3% growth.

Thepick-upinIndia’sdemandwill be most prominent for oil and coal, in line with the country’s heavy oil importdependencyatmorethan80%, ANZpredicted.

NEW DELHI: India should take measures such as increasing awarenessamongexportersandproper implementation of track and trace systems to deal with compliance requirements of the European Union's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) as it would hit agri exports, a report said recently.

This regulation will hit India's agricultural exports worth USD 1.3 billion to the EU starting December 2024, think tank Global Trade Research Initiative(GTRI)said.

"Indianexportsmaytakeabiggerhit than exports from other competing countries to the EU because of India's higher deforestation rate," the report said, adding India's exports will also be affected by the complex compliance requirements of the EUDR and the EU's Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR).

Even if the exporter is certain that a product is not grown on the deforested land, he/she still has to follow all elaborate compliance requirements, GTRICo-founderAjaySrivastavasaid.

He said this is so different from quality standards where quality of the finalproductalonematters.

"The EU just wants to raise the cost of imports to help local producers through a complex compliance mechanism,"headded.

The key products which would be affected due to this regulation include coffee,leatherhides,skin,preparations, oil cake, paper, paperboard, and wood furniture.

"India lost 384,000 ha of forests between 1990 and 2000, and 668,400 ha between 2015 and 2020. However, the India State of Forest Report 2021, released in January claimed a small increaseinforestcover.Butthepositive picture is because the government doesn't distinguish between natural forests and plantations when assessing forest cover. India is losing its natural forests and replacing them with plantations,"itsaid.

Due to this situation, Indian exporters will face challenges as they must prove that their export products come from land that has not been deforested after December 31, 2020, it said adding the EUDR will consider plantation land as deforested land, which would add to the difficulties for Indianexporters.

"The EUDR makes exports

expensive due to the high compliance cost. Even exporters of high-quality products must invest in expensive due diligence. They need to prove the integrity of their supply chain through a detailed trace and track system from Indian farms to EU markets. This involves sharing farm and farmer datawiththeEU,"itsaid.

The compliance procedure includes collecting various information such as commodity details, quantity, farmer/supplier names, country of production, and addresses of the land plots where the commodities were produced.

It said that the Indian Government should acknowledge that the EUDR is a reality and it should not expect any exemptionsfromtheEU.

The Government should "join hands with other affected countries to raise the issue at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Raise awareness among exporters about the compliance requirements; and utilize the existing blockchain-enabled trace and track system implemented by APEDA for grape exports to the EU and extend its adoption to cover all relevant products," thereportsuggested.
