Adani Ports and Special E c o n o m i c Z o n e
( A P S E Z ) , p r o u d l y announces revision of its credit rating to AAA by CARE Ratings. The top most rating signifies highest level of credit worthiness and the ability to fulfill all its financial guidance
With this development, APSEZ has become the first large sized private infrastructure developer to get this recognition The rating is driven by APSEZ’s robust integrated business model, dominant industry position, strong growth in operations
with healthy profitability, coupled with high liquidity and low leverage.
APSEZ’s successful track record of turning around port assets postacquisition and its integrated approach as a transport utility providing services from port gate to customer gate has led to 15% compounded annual growth in volumes for FY19-FY24 as compared to 4% CAGR for all Indian ports In FY24, APSEZ did a cargo volume of 419 95 MMT, 24% higher than the previous year.
Mr. Karan Adani, Managing Director, APSEZ said, “We cherish the recognition to our financial discipline and commitment to deleveraging, diversified asset base as well as customer base and the highest profitability in this sector globally.”.
DELHI: Exporters who witnessed a 3.1% annual decline in shipments last fiscal are again upbeat as order inflows have seen a significant rise in April, the first month of new fiscal year Orders have risen across key sectors in April as compared to March and April of last year, sources said.
The sectors like textiles and apparel and leather are reporting an increase in orders which points to a healthy first quarter, Director General and Chief Executive Ofcer of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) said Ajay Sahai.
Export figures for April is yet to be released by the Commerce Ministry
Another factor that will help in coming months is the shipments of orders that were booked in March but could not leave Indian shores on time as the Red Sea crisis and other developments in the Middle East have disrupted global shipping. Earnings from these orders will be
reflected in the early months of 2024-25.
Key reason for disruption in shipping is that after Houthi rebels of Yemen started attacking merchant ships the cargo vessels started a v o i d i n g t h e S u e z C a n a l a n d detouring around the Cape of Good Hope. Transit times have increased by 30% and container shipping capacity has dropped by 9% as ships spend more time at sea.
The experience of exporters aligns with the forecasts of revival in w o r l d t r a d e b y Wo r l d Tr a d e Organisation (WTO) and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). WTO expected world trade volumes to e x p a n d 2 . 6 % i n 2 0 2 4 a f t e r a contraction of 1.2% in 2023. In value terms the world merchandise trade had fallen 5%.
India too had recorded a 3.1% decline in exports to $ 437 billion in FY 24. In the last financial year the April-June quarter was the toughest
when exports had declined 6.3%. So this year the low base would also help the numbers look good.
The engineering sector that contributes 25% to total exports is also reporting order inflows at above the last year’s level. “April is traditionally a slow month after a rush in March and order flow is by and large at the sustaining at least year’s pace,” Chairman of Engineering Export Pr o m o t i o n C o u n c i l ( E E P C ) Arun Kumar Garidia said Engineering exports struggled in the early part of FY 24 but made a sharp rebound in the second half to close the year with a 2.1% growth to $ 109.32 billion. The sector also increased its share in India’s exports to 5.01% from 23.74% in FY 23.
The export sector has weathered t h e g l
m
geopolitical tensions well in FY 24 but fears of an escalation remain Sahai said if the Middle East situation deteriorates it will pose a challenge
MUMBAI: The International Coordinating Council on TransEurasian Transportation (CCTT) and the Federation of Freight Forwarding Associations of India (FFFAI) jointly organized a very significant debut meet called ‘India-AndWorld’ Business Forum which was held from April 24 to 25, 2024 in Mumbai. It is pertinent to mention that the FFFAI joined the CCTT during the XXXII Plenary Meeting which was held in Moscow in 2023 with Mr. Shankar Shinde as Vice Chairman of CCTT

MUMBAI: Allcargo Group, an Indian born global logistics conglomerate, organised a series of activities at its skill development centres located around Mumbai to ensure health and wellbeing of women. By organising health check-up camps and social awareness development initiatives, Allcargo Group acknowledged the achievements of women and continued with its endeavour to encourage people in general to support and uplift women and build an equitable and inclusive society

NEW DELHI: Developing E-commerce hubs in the country to further promote India’s exports through online medium are expected to figure in the Commerce Ministry’s 100-day agenda roadmap for the new Government, an official said.
The Commerce Ministry’s arm DGFT is already working with the RBI and concerned ministries, including the Finance Ministry, on several steps to promote exports through e-commerce medium as huge export opportunities are there in the sector The exercise assumes significance as Ministries have been asked to prepare a 100-day plan for the new government.
The seven-phase Lok Sabha polls, the world’s biggest election exercise, kicked off on April 19 with the counting of votes set to take place on June 4. The official said that these hubs can help further promote exports through e-commerce mediums.
According to an industry expert, in such hubs, export clearances can be facilitated. Besides, it can also have warehousing facilities, customs clearance, returns processing, labelling, testing and repackaging
“It will be a kind of bonded zone which will facilitate exports and imports of e-commerce cargo and to a large extent address the problem of re-imports because in e-commerce, about 25 per cent of goods are re-imported These hubs are also kind of export-oriented units and the private sector will have to come forward for developing these hubs,” Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO)DirectorGeneralAjaySahaisaid.
Last year, the cross-border e-commerce trade was about USD 800 billion and it is estimated to reach USD 2 trillion by 2030.
Recently, Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Santosh Kumar Sarangi has said that there is a huge potential to increase exports through e-commerce medium. Last year, the cross-border e-commerce trade was about USD 800 billion and is estimated to reach USD 2 trillion by 2030. “We need to reorient our policies to facilitate an e-commerce ecosystem and have a larger pie in the e-commerce exports,” Sarangi has said, adding that China’s e-commerce exports are about USD 350 billion, whereas India’s shipments through online medium is only USD 2 billion.
A report by economic think tank GTRI India’s e-commerce exports have the potential to reach USD 350 billion by 2030, but banking issues hinder growth and increase operational costs
India’s e-commerce industry is driven primarily by small businesses that export products valued between USD 25 and USD 1,000. The popular items include Handicrafts, art, books, ready-made garments, imitation jewellery, gems and jewellery, home décor, ayurveda products and sports goods. These niche products have found a market due to their unique artisanal values, the report has said.
India has set a target of USD 1 trillion of merchandise exports by 2030 and cross-border E-commerce trade has been identified as a source to meet this aim.
N E W D E L H I : I n t e n s i f y i n g regulatory actions against Indian spice giants in many countries puts nearly $700 million worth of exports to critical markets at stake, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said in a report on May 1.
The United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, and Malé have reportedly raised questions about the quality of spices supplied by leading Indian firms MDH and Everest Group. The stakes are high given that I n d i a e x p o r t e d s p i c e s w o r t h approximately $692.5 million in FY24 to these nations, the GTRI report added.
The private trade research think tank warns that if China and other ASEAN nations follow suit influenced by the actions taken by Hong Kong and Singapore, it could impact 51.1 percent of India’s global spice exports, valued at $2.17 billion.
“This situation could worsen if the European Union, which regularly rejects Indian spice consignments
over quality issues, follows suit. An EU-wide rejection could impact an additional $2.5 billion, bringing the total potential loss to 58.8 percent of India’s worldwide spice exports,” the report added.
“Every day new countries are raising concerns about the quality of Indian spices This issue demands urgent attention and action to uphold the storied reputation of India’s fabled spice garden,” the GTRI report added.
Need of the hour
G T R I c a l l e d f o r s w i f t investigations and the publication of findings to re-establish global trust in I n d i a n s p i c e s a n d u r g e d f o r immediate repercussions for erring firms.
India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) reportedly plans to conduct comprehensive quality checks of Indian spices sold by major brands, aiming to evaluate whether the products sold by these companies adhere to the standards
inspections are said to specifically target the presence of ethylene oxide, a pesticide deemed unfit for human consumption and associated with long-term cancer risks.
“However, the response from Indian authorities has been tepid and formulaic Following international criticism, both the Spices Board and FSSAI began routine sampling, yet no definitive statements about spice quality have been issued by these or any other Government agencies,” GTRI said.
GTRI added that despite denials of any wrongdoing by major companies l i k e M D H a n d E v e r e s t , t h e i r continued rejections by international bodies should have raised alarms with both the Spices Board and FSSAI relatively earlier.
“If the quality of products from top Indian firms is questionable, it casts doubt on the integrity of spices available in the Indian market as well,” GTRI added.

COPENHAGEN: A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) delivered a first quarter in line with expectations showing a strong recovery in earnings compared to the fourth quarter of 2023 Results were driven by a good performance in Terminals and the combination of higher demand and a prolonged Red Sea crisis As these conditions are expected to continue well into the second half of the year, Maersk lifts the lower end of its guidance range and now expects underlying EBIT at USD -2.0 to 0.0bn.
“We had a positive start to the year with a first quarter developing precisely as we expected. Demand is trending towards the higher end of our market growth guidance and conditions in the Red Sea remain entrenched This not only supported a recovery in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter, but also provide an improved outlook for the coming quarters, as we now expect these conditions to stay with us for most of the year However, we still anticipate the high number of new vessels being delivered during this and next year to eventually offset these factors and put the ocean markets under renewed pressure. We therefore relentlessly continue to pursue our cost agenda with the aim of rolling back the disruption linked cost in Ocean and restoring margins in Logistics & Services. This work on cost, helped by our strong value proposition, is crucial in supporting our customers through the ongoing volatility and build a more resilient business,” said, Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk.
• Ocean results were impacted by the situation in the Red Sea with increased market rates and costs due to the supply chain disruptions. Strong volumes, high capacity utilisation and continued cost discipline ensured improved results compared to the previous quarter
• Logistics & Services saw significant growth in volumes, while margin was at an unsatisfactory level on the back of too low utilization in some of our warehouses and short-term challenges implementing new customer contracts in the ground freight business in North America.
• Terminalsstartedtheyearwithstrongresultssupported by good volumes growth Strong cost management and high productivity helped improve margins
Maersk continued to streamline its portfolio to focus on end-to-end logistics with the spin-off of Svitzer The demerger was approved by an Extraordinary General Meeting on April 26th and completed on April 30th, with Svitzer Group A/S now listed on the Nasdaq Copenhagen. Financial guidance for 2024
The lower end of the original financial guidance is raised based on a strong market demand with container volume growth towards the upper end of the 2.5-4.5% range and A.P Moller - Maersk growing in line with the market. Further, the ongoing Red Sea / Gulf of Aden situation is expected to continue into the second half of the year. Over-supply remains a challenge and will eventually prevail, but the impact is delayed.
