Piyush Goyal highlights the importance of small countries in the Global Supply Chain at 'India Calling Conference 2023'

MUMBAI: Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, delivered the inaugural address at the 'India Calling Conference 2023' organized by the Indian Merchants Chamber in Mumbai. During his address, he highlighted the contribution of companies from small countries, such as the Czech Republic and Poland, to the supplychainofbigcompaniesaroundtheglobe.

Minister Goyal appealed to all to aim for a 47 trillion dollar economy when India reaches the year 2047. Minister Goyal said that every single geography in the world has a lot of hope and expectation from India, and though it can be sometimesdaunting,itshowstheconfidenceofthe world in India's future. He said, "India reflects the vision of the world as one Economy. While Commerce Industry teamsarenegotiatingFreeTradeAgreementswithadeep focusonprotectingIndia'sinterest,Indiabelievesthattrue prosperity happens when the whole world prospers. India believes in Vaccine Maitri under which it delivered 278 million doses to poorer countries mostly free because Indiafeelssafewhentheworldissafe."

During the conference, Dinesh Joshi, Chairman, IMC International Business Committee, highlighted the success story of 'Make in India' initiative, where India has turned out to be one of the most favored manufacturing hubs. He mentioned that India's smart phone exports have increased from zero to 90,000 crores, and centers of excellence are being set up for the manufacture of electronics, pharma, textiles, and

solar manufacturing. He also noted that India has made considerable progress in sectors such as defense, space, hydrogenenergy,andfintech.

Anant Singhania, President, IMC, in his welcome address, said that India is now the 5th largest nation byGDP, upfrom10thplacesince2014.Hehighlightedthe government's initiatives to link ordinary Indians to their electronicidentitythroughasetofdigitalservices,which has caused the cost of technology to drop. This and the conducive ecosystem created by the Government of India have transformed the startup scene in India, making India the world's third-largest startup hub, he observed. He also noted how India has gone from creating 1 Unicorn/year to 42 Unicorns in 2021 and in a span of 10 years emerged as the number 1 mobile data consumingnation.

APM Terminals Mumbai : First New Cranes arrive at Terminal

NAVI MUMBAI: The Zhen Hua 15 vessel, carrying two ship-to-shore cranes and three rail mounted gantry cranes, traversed 5,300 nautical miles over a period of 20 days, reaching APM TerminalsMumbaionFriday28April.

“The new cranes, with a 23-row outreach, will help load and discharge larger vessels in a shorter time, thereby increasing operational efficiencies at the terminal. The installation of the new cranes will increase capacity at the terminal by 10%, up to 2.2 million TEUs per annum. We thank our customers and stakeholders for their understanding and support during our transformation journey.

“We are gearing up to welcome larger vessels and

handling larger volumes efficiently, thereby offering superior customer experience,” informed a communique.

MSC boosts support for Asia-India Trade with New Shikra Service

The new, independently-managed Shikra service is namedafterthesmallbirdofpreywhichinhabitsmuchof Southeast Asia and India. The service will help meet the growing demands of Asian markets and provide greater flexibilityforMSC’scustomersworldwide.

Starting with MSC MARA on voyage QS321A, with an estimated arrival in Qingdao on 23 May, the following rotationwillprovidegreateraccesstokeyports:

Qingdao – Shanghai – Ningbo – Kaohsiung –Shekou – Singapore – Colombo – Nhava Sheva –Mundra – Colombo – Port Klang – Singapore –TanjungPelepas–VungTau–Qingdao.

MSC will therefore be updating its Sentosa service in due course to remove the calls at Mundra, Nhava Sheva

and Colombo, which will now be well covered by the Shikraservice.

countries, as per World Bank's LPI 2023 report. The Prime Minister commented : "Powered by port-led development, Indiaisonwaytobecomingahubforcommerceandlogistics."

Nirmala Sitharaman chairs review meeting with Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC)

NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman chaired a review meeting with Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC). The review meeting was attended by the Revenue Secretary; Chairman, CBIC and Members ofCBIC.

The comprehensive review covered a variety of work areas including trade facilitation, tax payer services, grievanceredressalofthetrade;finalisationofdisciplinary cases and infrastructure projects, and progress of the upcoming Palasamudram campus of the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes & Narcotics (NACIN).

The Finance Minister emphasised the need for continuously improving tax payer services. With respect to grievance redressal, Smt. Sitharaman desired that in each Zone interaction be organised with members of trade and industry who are part of the GST ecosystem to know their issues and suggestions, so as to systematically identify matters for working out a redress for them. She also directed to put in place a system to take feedback on grievancesredressedsoastoimprovequalityofredressal.

In the course of review, the Finance Minister was briefed on the final revenue achievement in total Indirect Tax collections for 2022-23 which stood at

Rs. 13.82 lakh crore [as against Rs. 12.89 Lakh Crore in 2021-22]. On the GST side, the average gross monthly collection for the year 2022-23 stood at Rs. 1.51 lakh crore and monthly GST revenue collections exceeded RS.1.4lakhcrorefor12monthsinarow.

The Finance Minister directed CBIC to introduce its automated GST return scrutiny by next week and to implement an action plan to increase the taxpayer base through enhanced use of technology. In order to intensify its drive against fake billing/Input Tax Credit (ITC), Smt. Sitharaman desired that CBIC may undertake a comprehensive root cause analysis by studying the typology of cases already booked and come up with recommendations on technology based solutions to addressthemenaceandpreventitsoccurrence.

The Finance Minister also advised CBIC to take measures for employee welfare. Cadre restructuring, capacity building and training, timely promotions and effective and timely action in disciplinary matters were discussed.

The CBIC also briefed Smt. Sitharaman about the activitiescarriedoutundertheCustomsCooperationFund (CCF - India) which is used to support capacity building initiatives amongst the members of the World Customs Organisation(WCO).

Ministry of Commerce asks Export Promotion Councils to work on targets for 2023-24

NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry(MoCI) has asked Export Promotion Councils(EPCs) to work on export targets for current fiscal year and chalk out a detailed road map to achieve that. According to exporters, issues related to the country’s outbound shipments were discussed during a meeting chaired by Union Commerce MinisterShriPiyushGoyalonApril24.

India’sgoodsandservicesexportstogethertouchedan all-time high of USD 770 billion last fiscal year. While merchandise exports touched USD 447 billion, services exportsareestimatedataboutUSD322billion.

“The Ministry has asked us to work on new exports target for this fiscal and explain ways to achieve,” an exportersaid.

He said it was emphasised that states and Indian missionsabroadbeinvolvedinachievingthenewtarget.

There was also a discussion on organising a major buyer-sellermeettoshowcaseIndia’sprowessinexports.

Latin America and African countries hold huge potentialtoboostexports.

Apparel Export Promotion Council Chairman

Narendra Goenka, who participated in the April 24 meeting, said though there are global economic uncertainties, the sector is likely to grow by 5-10 per cent thisfiscal.

The country’s merchandise exports are likely to cross USD 500 billion this fiscal due to healthy demand for domestic goods in key global markets, including the US, andbenefitsfromtradepacts,accordingtoexporters.

“Together with goods and services, we are targeting exports of USD 900 billion this fiscal,” FIEO Director GeneralAjaySahai said.

Free trade agreements with the UAE and Australia would provide a huge platform to boost exports in those markets.

Ludhiana-based engineering exporter and Hand Tools Association President SC Ralhan said there are healthy signs of economic growth in the US, which accounts for about18percentofIndia’stotaloutboundshipments.

Mumbai-based exporter and Chairman of Technocraft Industries Sharad Kumar Saraf too said that this fiscal wouldbebetterthanlastyearforIndia’sexports.

CEPA is the growth engine for India-UAE bilateral trade

1st Anniversary of India-UAE CEPA implementaon

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of the first anniversary of the implementation of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) on May 1st, Commerce Secretary Shri Sunil Barthwal congratulated the people of India and the UAE on the milestone and talked about CEPA’s role as a growth engine for India-UAE bilateral trade over the past 11 months. CEPA is a full and deep Agreement signed on 18 February 2022, during a virtual summit between the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi and His Excellency the President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. CEPA entered into force from01May2022.

During the past one year, CEPA has made a significant impact on India’s Bilateral Trade with the UAE and particularly India’s Exports to the UAE (Oil and Non-Oil). The Bilateral Trade between India and the UAE has touched historic highs during FY 2022-23. Trade has increased from US$ 72.9 billion (Apr 21-Mar 2022) to US$ 84.5 billion (Apr 22-Mar 2023) registering a year-onyear increase of 16%. During the CEPA Implementation period (from May 22 to Mar 23), bilateral trade increased from US$ 67.5 billion (May 21-Mar 2022) to US$ 76.9 billion (May22-Mar2023)–anannualincreaseof14%.

Exports from India to the UAE have also registered a multiyear high. During April-March period, Indian exports to the UAE increased from US$ 28 bn to US$ 31.3 bn; anincreaseofaroundUS$3.3billion;or11.8%year-on-year growth in percentage terms. During the same period, growth in India’s global exports was 5.3%, excluding the UAE,India’sglobalexportsgrewat4.8%.

During the CEPA Implementation period (May 22 –March 23), India’s exports to the UAE increased from 26.2 billion (May 21 – March 22) to 28.5 billion (May 22 –March 23); an 8.5% y-o-y growth. During the same period, India’s global exports, excluding the UAE, grew at 3.1%. India’s Imports from the UAE have grown to USD 53.2 billion (an annual increase of 18.8%) during Apr 22 to Mar23.Non-oilimportsduringthesameperiodgrewby4.1%.

Some of the key sectors, including labour-intensive sectors, that have witnessed significant export growth on account of the CEPA include: Mineral Fuels; Electrical Machinery (particularly telephone equipment); Gems & Jewellery; Automobiles (Transport vehicles segment); Essential Oils/Perfumes/Cosmetics (Beauty/Skin care products); Other Machinery; Cereals (Rice); Coffee/Tea/Spices; Other Agri Products; and ChemicalProducts.

New ports set to change the face of AP’s logistics sector

HYDERABAD:Withtheupcomingthreenewports,the logistics sector in Andhra Pradesh is all set to change for the better over the next two years. While the construction works of two ports has already begun, works in the third portisslatedtobeginsoon.

“Including a private SEZ port that is set to come up at Kakinada and three government ports, over Rs. 16,000 crore is being invested in port development in Andhra Pradesh, the benefits of which could be seen over the next 24 to 36 months,” Ravindranath Reddy, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board (APMB) said.

Few weeks ago, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, YS Jagana Mohan Reddy, laid the function stone for the

Rs. 4,362 crore Mulapeta Port — previously called as Bhavanapadu Port — in Srikakulam district. The location of the port can help handle exports and imports from other States including Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya PradeshandOdishabesidesprovidingonwardconnectivity.

India quietly counters China’s BRI with 7,200 km transport corridor

NEW DELHI: The 7,200 km long International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC) connecting India and Russia is now rapidly coming to life after remaining a slow starter for years. Next month a host of fresh agreements is set to be inked at the international economic forum to be held at Kazan, a city located in southwest Russia. The agreements are expected to eliminate the current operationalroadblocks.

With India and Russia determined to strengthen bilateral economic activities including trade amid the changing geopolitical dynamics, the thrust on the corridor changinggeopoliticaldynamicshasgoneup.

‘We intend to sign a bunch of supplemental agreements, first of all on transport services. We have the North-South corridor, where we plan to reach Iran and India via Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and via Azerbaijan. We will ink several agreements in this sphere,’ news agency TASS quoted Russian Deputy Prime Minister MaratKhusnullinassaying.

Last week, a 50-member Indian business delegation were in Russia to explore further opportunities to boost trade between the two countries, whichare alsointalksfor afreetradeagreement.

The INSTC is envisaged to facilitate easier movement of freight between several countries including India Russia, Iran,Afghanistan,Armenia,Belarus,Bulgaria,Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan among others. The first cargo from

NhavaShevaPortwasflaggedofflastyearinNovember. Recently the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) defence ministers’ meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Iranian counterpart Brigadier General MohammadRezaGharaeiAshtiyanitoodeliberatedonthe progressoftheproject.

JALNA: Union Minister of State for Railways, Coal and Mines Shri Raosaheb Danve said, industries must reduce logistics and supply chain costs in order to facilitate economicgrowthanddevelopmentintheCountry.

Danve was speaking at a scrap recycling and waste utilisation awareness conference organised by the Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) and Steel ManufacturersAssociationofMaharashtra(SMAM).

He said the ambitious Dedicated Freight Corridor project of the Railways, which will have high-speed rail lines to transport goods from Maharashtra in the west and

West Bengal in the east to Dadri near Delhi, will bring down logistics costsbyconnectingindustrialhubs.

In addition, multi-modal logistics parks in several parts of the country, including Jalna, and ‘circular economy parks’ in Aurangabad, Ratnagiri, Pune and Nagpur, which will focus on scrap and waste recycling, will help enhance efficiency of the goodstransportationmechanism,Danvesaid.

India, Russia to explore possibility of accepting RuPay and Mir cards

NEW DELHI: India and Russia will explore the possibility of accepting RuPay and Mir cards in each other's country for hassle-free payments amid sanctions imposed by the West on Moscow. In the recent high level Internal Governmental Commission meeting on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), it was discussed and agreed to explore the opportunity of allowing acceptanceofthesecards,sourcessaid.

The mutual acceptance of RuPay (India) and Mir cards (Russia) will help Indian and Russian citizens to make hasslefree payments in Indian rupees and Russian ruble in their respectivecountries,sourcessaid.

The meeting, co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Russia Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, also agreed to explore the possibility of interaction of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) of National Payment Corporation of India and the Faster Payments System (FPS) oftheBankofRussia.

Besides, it was also agreed to look at adopting the Russian financial messaging system, Services Bureau of Financial Messaging System of the Bank of Russia, for cross border payments.

Currently, overseas payments from India and vice versa arethroughtheSWIFTnetwork.

At the given point when sanctions are imposed, sources said, it would not be feasible for India to opt for other than SWIFTnetwork.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong launched the cross-border connectivitybetweenUPIandPayNow.

Linkage of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Singapore's PayNow now allows people in the two countries to undertakefasterandcost-efficientdigitaltransfers.

It will also help the Indian diaspora in Singapore, especially migrant workers and students, through instantaneous and low-cost transfer of money from Singapore toIndiaandviceversa.

The PayNow-UPI linkage is the world's first real-time payment systems linkage to use a scalable cloud-based infrastructure that can accommodate future increases in the volumeofremittancetraffic.

To begin with, the State Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Indian Bank and ICICI Bank will facilitate both inward and outward remittances while Axis Bank and DBS India will facilitateinwardremittances.

The UPI was launched in 2016, and since then it has emerged as the most popular and preferred payment mode pioneering person-to-person and person-to-merchant transactions, accounting for 75 per cent of the total digital payments.

The volume of UPI transactions has increased manifold from 0.45 crore in January 2017 to 804 crore in January 2023. The value of UPI transactions has increased from just Rs1,700croretoRs12.98lakhcroreduringthesameperiod.

PM Gati Shakti NMP helps growth of Rs 2 lakh cr in Export in FY23: Shipping Minister

MUMBAI: Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said that the PM Gati Shakti Programme has helped the country to register a year-on-year incremental growth of Rs2lakhcroreingoodsexportinthepreviousfiscal.

Delivering his speech at an event hosted by Indian Merchants Chamber here, Shri Sonowal, Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, also said the central government has been working hard towards improving and modernising India’s ports and connected infrastructure.

As a result of transformational initiatives, “in 2022-23 financial year India’s Goods exports touched $447 billion, up from $422-billion a year earlier, which translates into a huge increase of more than Rs 2 lakh crore in a year,” Sonowalwasquotedassayinginastatement.

According to the minister, India has become a $3.5 trillion economy in less than nine years. “This blistering speed of the growth is historic and the resultofGatiShakti,”hestated.

The multi-modal connectivity provides integrated and seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods and services from one mode of transport to another. It facilitates last-mile connectivity of infrastructure and alsoreducestraveltimeforpeople,headded.

Under PM Gati Shakti NMP, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has identified 101 projects worth Rs 62,227 crores for implementation by 2025, aspertheMinister.

Out of these 101 projects, 26 projects worth Rs 8,897 crore have been completed, 42 projects amounting to Rs 15,343 crore are under development, while 33 projects

worth Rs 36,638 crore are under implementation, heinformed.

Out of the projects under implementation, 14 projects worth Rs 20,537 crore are expected to be completed by Decemberthisyear,theMinistersaid.

Of the 101 MoPSW Gati Shakti projects, 57 are from the major ports, and 44 projects are from states, he said, adding these projects have supported faster and more efficient movement of cargo, leading to an overall reductioninlogisticscost.

According to Sonowal, his ministry has also identified five high-impact projects (HIP), which demonstrate the conceptandspiritoftheGatiShaktiprogramme.

He also said that the tonnage of Indian ships has increased to 13.7-million gross tonnage compared to only 10.3MillionGrossTonnagein2014.

Speaking about the PM Gati Shakti Project MinisterGadkarisaid,“PMGatiShaktiNational Master Plan (NMP) is a very big initiative and it willhelpusreducelogisticscosts.Logisticscost in India is higher at 13% to 14% of GDP comparedto8%to9%ofGDPinotherdeveloped economies such as the USA. Higher logistics cost reduces the competitiveness of ‘Made in India’ products in global markets. Reducing logistics costs to 9% of GDP is at the topofGovernment’sagenda.”

About plans to improve highway network, Minister said that NHAI is developing world class ‘Wayside Amenities (WSA)’ at more than 600 locations along the National Highways. Apart from basic facilities like good toilets, parking and restaurants; these Way Side Amenities will also have Dormitories for Truck Drivers, EV Charging facilities,

Convention centers, Trauma centers and Retail shops for promoting handicrafts and locally manufactured products. Some WSAs will also have Helipads and Drone Landing Facilities to deal with medical emergency situations like road accidents and organ transplantation.
