Red sea crisis : Gujarat exporters turn to costly aerial routes

AHMEDABAD: Over the past few months, global trade has been severely affected, primarily due to the disruption in one of the critical shipping routes through the Red Sea According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), attacks on vessels in the Red Sea region have reduced traffic through the Suez Canal through which about 15% of the global maritime trade volume passes

The Suez Canal is the shortest maritime route between Asia and Europe and, therefore, the disruption has had a critical effect on exports from India, particularly from Gujarat, a manufacturing-heavy state.

Amid worries about delayed shipments because of the brewing Red Sea crisis, exporters were compelled to turn to air cargo despite higher costs. The crisis had a greater impact on exports of food products, textile, phar maceuticals, and engineering goods.

Meeting the demands of buyers during Ramzan and Easter seasons has become a challenge for exporters, amid higher turnaround time.

Manufacturers of perishable goods, such as pharmaceuticals, have diverted shipments to air cargo. About 50% of the country's pharma industry revenues come from exports to the US and Europe. As almost twothirds of Indian pharma exports take place through the sea route, costs are a key concern for pharma majors here Non-perishable cargos like textile, auto parts and electronics, which are in demand due to the festive season in the Middle East and Europe, are also taking the air route.

Samir Mankad, the Director of GSEC Aviation, which handles the Ahmedabad Air Cargo Complex (AACC), was quoted as saying that, "In Oct 2023, the average daily air cargo volume stood at 80 metric tonnes (MT) at the Ahmedabad Air Cargo Complex. On a busy day, the unit used to handle about 100 MT Today, it handles 200 MT every day." A Mumbai- based logistics company is facing a similar issue. Mahesh Fogla, the Executive Director of the company, said, "Typically, we handle 600 MT air cargo every month for exports to East Africa, Kuwait, Saudi

Arabia, Dubai, and Muscat, among others. This has in- creased to 900 MT a month. Amid higher demand, air freight costs have also increased. For instance, an airline bound for Sudan used to charge Rs 320 per kg for garments. It now charges Rs 460. Air freight costs have gone up for all destinations." Mankad attributes the rise in cargo volumes to the in operational Gujarat Agro-run cargo terminal, the closing of the fiscal year, and the Red Sea crisis.

"Across commodities, including pharma, textile, agriculture and medical devices, the cargo terminal has witnessed an increase of 35% in volumes, which have been diverted from the sea route to the air route. Exporters are taking a hit because air cargo freight costs have also increased over the past three to five months,"Mankad said.

According to Airline Freight Forwarders, the crisis has led to an increase in the cost of sea freight also because of a 15- 20% rise in insurance premiums. Freight forwarders said that warehouses are chock-a-block with cargo piling up in warehouses.

‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ norm started from April 1st by NHAI

NEW DELHI: For seamless vehicular movement at the Toll Plazas across the country, the stateowned National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ norm has come into force from April 1. The new norm aims to discourage the use of a single FASTag for several vehicles or linking multiple FASTags to a particular vehicle. Earlier, NHAI had extended the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative compliance deadline to March-end, given the problems faced by Paytm FASTag users.

“Multiple FASTags won’t work… People who have multiple FASTags for one vehicle won’t be able to use all of them from today (April 1),” the official told PTI.

NHAI’s initiative has come against the backdrop of several reports of multiple FASTags being issued for a particular vehicle and FASTags being used without KYC in violation of RBI’s mandate. Further, drivers sometimes deliberately do not place FASTags on windshields c a u s i n g t o l l p l a z a d e l a y s , inconveniencing other highway users

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India, operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). It encompasses a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it or directly toll owner

Notably, Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) through FASTag has also witnessed constant growth over the last few years It includes toll collection via FASTag on fee plazas, including State Highway fee plazas’s Rs. 50,855 crore collection in calendar year 2022, an approx. 46% increase as compared to Rs. 34,778 crore in 2021.

Meanwhile, the number of FASTag transactions also increased to nearly 48% in 2022 as compared to that in 2 0 2 1 T h e n u m b e r o f FA S Ta g transactions in 2021 and 2022 was 219 crores and 324 crores respectively

The total traffic handled at JNPA during the period from April-2023 to Mar-2024, is 85.82 Million tonnes, which is 2.33% higher, as against the 83 86 million tonnes handled during corresponding period in previous f i n a n c i a l y e a r T h i s i n c l u d e s 78.13 million tonnes of container traffic and 7.70 million tonnes of Bulk Cargo as against 76 19 million tonnes of container traffic and 7.67 million tonnes of bulk traffic in the corresponding period of last year respectively

Breakdown of container traffic shows that 2.03 million 2027781 TEUs were handled at BMCT, 1.59 million TEUs at APMT, 1.13 million TEUs at N S I C T, 1 . 1 1 m i l l i o n T E U s a t NSIGT, 0 56 million TEUs at NSFT and 7,978 TEUs at NSDT.

Baltimore bridge: US Coast Guard opens temporary channel for vessels

BALTIMORE: The US Coast Guard has opened a temporary, alternate channel for vessels involved in the clearing of debris at the site of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, part of a phased approach to opening the main channel leading to the vital port, officials said.

Great Eastern Shipping continues Tanker fleet rejuvenation

MUMBAI: Great Eastern Shipping has struck a deal to sell its 2004-built MR product tanker Jag Pahel, making room for more modern tonnage.

The price and the buyer of the 46,300 dwt ship Great Eastern ordered in February 2003, have not been disclosed

The Hanjin Heavy-built ship, estimated by VesselsValue to be worth around $17.7m, will change hands by the end of the first quarter of the company’s 2025 fiscal year.

Last month, the Mumbai-listed owner picked up a 2010-built MR from Ireland-based tanker player Ardmore

Shipping for $27 1m, and another unnamed 2013-built 51,486 dwt tanker last week, a few months after offloading another ageing unit.

Allcargo Terminals are offering training to CHAs in CFS to help them efficiently utilize the myCFS digital portal. The goal is to leverage digital technologies to simplify the CFS operations, thus boosting operational and cost efficiency for the customers.

Overall exports for FY24 expected to be $440-445 billion : FIEO

NEW DELHI: The last-quarter spurt would see India’s merchandise exports to be around $445 billion in the financial year 2023-24, about 1.3% lower than previous year’s level of $451 billion. The new year is challenging and growth from hereon will depend on inflation-interest rate dynamics in the key markets of the US and Europe, trade experts said,

“The merchandise exports in March are expected to be around $ 40 billion, as $ 5-6 billion will be added to the monthly shipments number This should take the overall exports for this year to $440-445 billion,” Director General and Chief Executive Ofcer of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Ajay Sahai said.

Before exports started looking up from October 2023 onwards, there was a 9% year-on-year decline in AprilSeptember.

Services exports are up 6.7% on year till February to $314.8 billion. They are expected to end the year at around $345 billion. For 2023-24 overall exports are expected to touch $ 790 billion, up from $ 777.6 billion last year

The decline of 1.3% in merchandise exports compares well with the 5% decline in world trade in goods in 2023 estimated by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

The next year appears challenging as there has been no let up in geopolitical frictions like the crisis in the Red Sea

and Ukraine war that are directly impacting trade flows. The Red Sea crisis that has seen direct attacks on merchant shipping has indeed its sixth month while the Ukraine war has completed two years.

The Red Sea crisis has impacted freight rates and duration of voyages. So far buyers have adjusted to higher costs but still the impact could come on commodities trade, Sahai said.

The freight cost of commodities trade is much higher and margins are not enough to absorb any big fluctuations. The impact of the Red Sea may still come on commodities which may see trade shifting to geographies other than Asia, Northwest Africa and Europe that have been impacted most, he added.

The Indian government is monitoring the situation arising out of the Red Sea and other geopolitical disruptions through a high-level inter-ministerial group of officials. As of now there is nothing much that can be done by the government on the Red Sea situation.

“How inflation in the key market behaves and whether rate cuts would follow. If that (rate cuts) happen it would have a much more positive impact on exports in the coming year,: Sahai said.

In his remarks on Friday US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell indicated that interest rates would come down in 2024 but not before more confirmation comes on decline in inflation. This means the cuts will be in the later part of the year. Some expect the European Central Bank (ECB) to lead with the cuts, which can come as soon as June.

At 1,591 mt, Railways achieves highest-ever freight loading in FY24

NEW DELHI: Freight loading across Indian Railways saw a 5 per cent YoY increase to 1,591 million tonnes (mt) for FY24, as compared to 1,512 mt in the year ago period. This is the highest-ever freight loading by the Railways.

“FY24 saw an incremental loading of 79 mt making it one of best year’s for the Railways,” an official said.

During the fiscal, Railways achieved loading of 787.61 mt in coal or nearly 50 per cent of total freight loading; while it achieved a freight loading of 180.95 mt in iron ore, 153.80 mt in cement and 114.36 mt in other goods. Container traffic was 85.04 mt, pig iron and finished steel moved was to the tune of 69.89 mt while fertilizer movement was around 59.18 mt. Foodgrains movement was 51.45 mt while petroleum, oil and lubcricants movement was 50.49 mt.

The Railways also carried out electrification across 7,188 route kilometers as against 6,565 route km in FY23.

The average per day route electrification pace is now up to 19.6 km per day in Fy24, as against 1.42 km per day in FY14.

Around 53,00 kms of in new line laying (which includes new line laying, doubling and gauge conversion) have been achieved in FY 2023-24 as compared to 5,241 Kms during 2022-23. Thus, average daily track laying comes out to be 14.5 km per day

In order to increase line capacity to run more trains on existing high-density routes, the Indian Railways has been pushing for automatic block signals. In FY24, the Railways upgraded 582 km with automatic signalling, as compared to 530 km during 2022-23.

India’s Defence exports crossed all-time high of Rs. 21,000 crore : Rajnath Singh

NEW DELHI: India’s defence exports reached an all time high level of Rs. 21,083 crore in financial year 2023-24 with a 32.5% growth in FY24 compared to previous financial year, said Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh recently

Underlining the strong growth of private sector and Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) over the years, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said “defence ministry has taken several initiatives to spur India’s defence manufacturing and exports.”

“Delighted to inform everyone that the Indian Defence Exports have scaled to unprecedented heights and crossed Rs. 21000 crore mark for the first time in the history of Independent India,” wrote Rajnath Singh in a post on X.

A month ago, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh applauded India’s defence manufacturing capability which he said is a reflection of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

“Our total defence manufacture stands at a monumental one lakh crore.
