SeaLead to launch direct ‘ASIA’ service to the Australia East Coast and Indian Subcontinent

MELBOURNE : Container Line

SeaLead is launching a regular, direct service between the east coast of Australia and the Indian Subcontinent. The service, called ASIA, will connect Australia directly with India and Pakistan, complementing SeaLead’s SAEAustraliatoChinaservice.

SeaLead will solely operate the new service, deploying two container vessels with a capacity of 4250 TEU each. According to SeaLead’s agent in Australia, Nautical Shipping, further vessels are due to slot into the rotation to increase frequency in the third and fourth quarters of this year.

The port rotation for the service will be: Melbourne –Sydney – Brisbane – Port Kelang (West Port) –Karachi – Mundra – Nhava Sheva – Port Kelang (West Port).

SeaLead was founded in 2017, initially operating feeder services in the Red Sea. It then expanded its feeder services to cover the Middle East, then began services connecting China and the Middle East. It now operates routes that connect East Asia, the US, Mexico andAustralia.

According to Alphaliner, it is the 22nd-biggest ocean carrier by TEU capacity with 85,267 TEU.

US Trade Secretary : India to be key beneficiary of US $200-bn fund for key Infra projects

NEW DELHI - The United States will provide financial support from its $200-billion Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) Fund to Indian tech entrepreneurs and infrastructure projects to bolster ‘friendshoring’, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said recently.

In June 2022, the US announced a plan to raise $200 billion in private and public funds through 2027 for infrastructure financing in developing countries under a G7 initiative aimed at countering China’s multi-trilliondollarBeltandRoadproject.

“Overall, the US aims to mobilise $200 billion through 2027 for PGII, and we look forward to partnering with India to continue investing in its future,” Yellen said, addressing aroundtablewithUSandIndiantechbusinessleaders.

The meeting was attended by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, Wipro executive chairman Rishad Premji, Managing Director at Bharat FIH Ltd Josh

India a trusted Global Trade partner for World, multiple FTAs progressing, says Piyush Goyal

PUNE - From not being taken seriously by countries when they first mooted free trade agreements, India now has nations looking forward to signing agreements with it, said Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Textiles and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

The Minister said that the world had accepted India as atradingpartnertheycouldtrust.

There was good progress in the FTA with UK and Canada. Similarly, he expected a deeper engagement and expansion of bilateral trade with the US. Goyal said the US commerce secretary, Gina Raimondo would lead a delegationtoIndiaonMarch8.

Speaking at the Asia Economic Dialogue 2023 organised by the Pune International Centre and the Ministry of External Affairs in Pune, Goyal said as the US does not have Congressional support for getting into free tradeagreementsinthefuture,theyhavedevisedtheIndia Pacific Economic Framework, which has been

conceptualisedasanalternativeframework.

Though market access may not be offered yet it would enable the country to get closer to the US’ resilient supply chains, have technology partnerships and open up economies through indirect measures that go outside the realmofafreetradeagreement.

The Minister said the country did the fastest-ever FTA in the history of the world with the India-UAE agreement havingbeencompletedin88days.

“We also completed a fast FTA with Australia. That is the enthusiasm the world is demonstrating towards working with India. We have negotiations going on with Israel, Canada, the EU, the UK and GCC. Russia and its partner countries of EAU too want to fast-track negotiationswithIndia,”hesaid.

About the FTA with Europe, he said there were 27 countries involved and it was much more time-consuming and EU was bureaucratic in their approach so that would taketime,hesaid.

Paradip Port handles over 116mn MT of Cargo well ahead of Fiscal end

PARADIP - The Paradip Port Trust has achieved a significant milestone in cargo handling. Addressing a Vaartalap- Media Workshop organised by Press Information Bureau at the port town of Paradip on Sunday, 26th Feb, the Chairman of the Paradip Port Trust PL Haranadh said the port has handled more than 116 Million MetricTonnesofcargowellaheadoftheendofthisfiscal.

a positive growth of 17.5%, which is the highest among all major Ports in the country. Paradip Port Is vying for the coveted 130 MMT Cargo handling mark in the current fiscalitself,headded.

Describing the Gatishakti initiative of the Union Government as a game changer in the country’s logistics landscape, Mr Haranadh said the port will stand to gain immenselyfromthisinitiative.

Govt bans 25-year-old Oil Tankers, Bulk Carriers, and other ships from Indian waters

NEW DELHI - The Government has decided to ban 25-year-old oil tankers, bulk carriers, and general cargo vessels, both Indian registered and foreign flagged, from calling Indian ports to load and unload cargo as it looks to encourage a younger fleet to improve safety, meet global rules on ship emissions and protect the marine environmentfrompollutionduringmishaps.

The age restriction, though, will only be applicable to Indian and foreign flag vessels that require a license from the Directorate General of Shipping (D G Shipping) under Section 406 and 407 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958. Further, the age limit will also be applicable to vessels granted exemption from licensing requirements under Section406and407oftheMSAct,commonlyreferredtoas Cabotagerules.

Section 406 prescribes that “no India ship and no other ship chartered by a citizen of India or a

companyoracooperativesocietyshallbetakentoseafrom a port or place within or outside India except under a license granted by the Director General under this section”.

According to Section 407 of the M S Act, “No ship other than an Indian ship or a ship chartered by a citizen of India or a company or a cooperative society shall engageinthecoastingtradeofIndiaexceptunderalicense grantedbytheDirectorGeneralunderthissection”.

In the case of gas/chemical carriers, fully cellular container vessels, cement carriers, harbour tugs (those operating within ports), specialised vessels such as diving support, geo-technical, pipe laying, seismic survey, well simulation and accommodation barge, the age limitforoperationshasbeensetat30years.

For dredgers, the maximum age limit for operations will be 40 years.

India is unlikely to export, import wheat; Govt is clearing FCI stocks

NEW DELHI : “India is unlikely to import wheat as, right now, the Government is clearing FCI stocks and this would meet the current requirement. The intention is to clearupasmuchstockaspossiblesothatonehasspacefor procurementnextyear,”anofficialsaid.

No immediate changes are likely to be made in the Centre’s decision disallowing both import and export of wheat, officials tracking the mattaer have said.

The Government had estimated wheat stocks at 126 lakh tonnes (lt) as of April 1, 2023, before its decision to offload 50 lt from the Central Pool under the open market sales scheme (OMSS) was taken. Now that offtake is robust under OMSS and as much as 30-35 lt OMSS

allocation is likely to be exhausted by March 31, the country may have around 90 lt of stock as of April 1, 2023, against the buffer norm of about 75 lt, another official said.

Wheatexports

On wheat exports, the official said the Inter-Ministerial Committee will take a view on the matter in due course afterthenewcropstartscomingintothemarketfromApril and there is a more accurate production estimate available. “Last year, it turned out that a part of the wheat crop was affected due to a scorching heat wave in March and the decision to export had to be withdrawn abruptly. Suchsituationsshouldbeavoided,”hesaid.

KV Kamath says digital economy can contribute 25% GDP by Fy29

MUMBAI - Noted banker KV Kamath, who now chairs the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID), expects the digital sector to contribute a quarter of the incremental GDP by the time the economy becomes a USD 7 trillion giant by FY29. Currently, the contribution of the digital economy is a low 4 per cent, whereas it is as much as 40 per cent in China. The government and planners see the economy becoming the third largest in the world by FY29, overtaking Japan, with a GDP of USD 7 trillion from the present USD 3.3 trillion.

The digital economy — the digital infrastructure, e-commerce and other digital payments and services segments–can be the country’s biggest growth-driver and can contribute as much as 25 per cent of the incremental GDP by the time India becomes a USD 7trillion economy by FY29. Currently, the share is a low 4 per cent, Kamath told PTI in an interaction over the weekend. “As much as 40 per cent of the Chinese economy come from the digital sector today, and I don’t see any reason why we can’t achieve this,” the former ICICI Bank Chairman quipped.

“The Global nature of Trade will prevail,” says MSC CEO

GENEVA : Speaking for the first time at this year’s Transpacific Maritime Conference known as TPM23, MSC CEO Soren Toft gave a detailed overview of the company’s continued growth, expectations for economic recovery, and efforts to realize sustainableshipping.

Taking place in Long Beach, California,theannualTPMconference is one of the largest and most consequential events for the supply chain and logistics industry. It was the first full-scale physical-only gathering forTPMsincetheCOVIDoutbreak.

“The world has seen through the supply chain crunch just how important the logistics and shipping industry really is – we keep global trade moving,” Soren said in an interview with the Journal of Commerce’s Peter Tirschwell. “It has really displayed the fundamental role that we have, and customers are now thinking about how to make their supply chain as resilient for the future.”

On the back of the pandemic –whichTirschwelldeclaredtobe“over” as he opened this year’s event to a record 3500 participants – supply chains and the freight market have normalized and the global economy should see some improvements in the second half of the year, according to Soren.

Container shipping will serve as the bedrock for the growth of international trade and commerce, and “global trade will prevail” despite the disruptions of COVID and geopolitical factors, Soren remarked.

“The world will continue to be globalized, but with a more distributed supplychain,”hesaid.

MSC has invested significantly in renewing its fleet in recent years and will keep on injecting billions of dollars to ensure it can continue to be a longterm partner for customers, Soren said.As“firstandforemost”ashipping company, MSC prefers to operate its own ships and will likely see the proportion of chartered tonnage in its fleet decline in the coming months, as well as sending some older ships to be recycled.

Overall, the impact of improving theoperationalefficiencyofthefleetto comply with the UN IMO’s Carbon IntensityIndicator(CII)mayabsorb710 percent of the world’s container shippingfleetcapacity,hesaid.

When asked about the company’s futureplans,Sorenacknowledgedthat MSC’s desire to serve the whole marketdiffersfromthestatedstrategy of some other carriers. “We define ourselvesonwhatthecustomerwants, not on what we want to offer,” he said. The company remains committed to long-term partnerships, and investments that look far into the future, he added, declining to disclose specific details of the company’s strategy.

“We are a family company, so we think really long term,” Soren remarked. “For us, it is about how we can build the next 53 years of history and not just the next quarter.” This means realizing investments that will ensure the company’s growth, enhancing the fleet and developing productive container terminals. Where customers seek digital

solutions, or services via rail, barge, truck and air, MSC can also deliver these, depending on the customer’s need.

The interview also focused on the urgent task of achieving decarbonization across the supply chain. As the world’s largest ocean carrier, MSC endeavours to be a steward of the world’s oceans and to this end has invested substantially in cutting-edge technologiesanddigitalapplicationsto improve energy efficiency. It has also pioneered the use of responsibly sourced blended biofuels and will soon startusingliquefiednaturalgas(LNG) as part of the transition towards net decarbonizationby2050.

Soren lamented the lack of a global carbon price or global research and development (R&D) fund that would have incentivized companies to developgreensolutions.Healsocalled on energy companies that are in the processofproducingviablealternative greenfuelstoacceleratethetransition and called for further cross-industry collaborationtoachievethis.

MSC is looking at a multi-pronged approach, deploying several types of net-zero energy sources such as synthetic LNG, green methanol and ammonia, to propel the MSC fleet of the future when these fuels become available at scale. Whatever the solution,anetzerofuturewilladdcosts tothesupplychainandthesecostswill ultimately be passed on to the consumer,hepointedout.

“Decarbonization is something that we must solve," he said. “This is not something that we maybe should fix,thisissomethingthatweabsolutely mustfix,andI’msurewewill.”

IMU & IIT Madras signs MoU

CHENNAI : Indian Maritime University (IMU) and Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) signed a MoU to initiate a cooperative agreement in order to promote the maritime activities betweenboththeInstitutions.

Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University established through an Act of Parliament in November 2008 and is poised to play a key role in the development of trained human resourceforthemaritimesector.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) is a statutory body constituted under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 and is known for excellence in technical education, basic and applied research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industrialconsultancy.

The objective of the MOU is to initiate a cooperative agreement in order to promote the following activities between both the Institutions:-

• Initiatives identified under MaritimeIndiaVision2030

• Collaboration of faculty members andExchangeofstudents

• Jointresearchactivities

• JointPhDPrograms

• JointwebMTechprograms

• Organisation of seminars and academicmeetings

• Development of long/short term programmes

• Enabling courses for national creditbank

• Programs for capacity building in Industries.

Ocean Engineering, IIT-M in the august presence of Dr. Malini V Shankar, I.A.S. (Retd.), Vice Chancellor, IMU & Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT-M on 27th February, 2023 inIMU-HQ.
