Tiruppur knitwear exporters flag concerns over Q4 export order trend

TIRUPPUR: Despite improvements in new orders from key markets, the current quarter is unlikely to bring any big cheer for knitwear exporters in Tiruppur, says an industry body that represents the knitwearcapitalofIndia.

Exporters say there was a contraction in demand in key markets such as the US and European Union during the December 2022 quarter despite buying seasons such as Thanksgiving day, Christmas, and New year.

In Q3, the overall decline was about 19 per cent at about $975 million for knitwearexportsfromTiruppur.

“The order placement is gradually increasing and January 2023 has also seen some increases. But those are not promising and we feel that the declining trend would continue in Q4 also,” S Sakthivel, Executive Secretary, Tiruppur Exporters Association said.

In dollar terms, knitwear exports from Tiruppur declined by 10.1 per cent to $393 million when compared with $437 million in December 2021. Overall, knitwear exports from India fell 2.9 per cent to $737 million during the last month as against $759 million inDecember2021.

Inflationandwarimpact

The declining trend for Tiruppur exporters started in August 2022 as an impact of the Russian-Ukraine war. Tiruppur accounts for about 55 per cent of knitwear exports from India. “High inflationary conditions and recessionary trends in key markets of the US and EU kept the textile and apparel demand subdued in 2022, especially the later half. Volume growth in most of the markets remained in negative to nil zone, with market size increase happening due to higher product costs,” according to Varun Vaid, Business Director, Wazir Advisors, a management consultingfirm.

Steel companies seek import duty hike to counter dumping

NEW DELHI: The domestic steel industry has requested the Government to increase the basic customs duty on steel imports and levy an additional 25% safeguard duty on the alloy in the upcoming Union budget to counterdumpingofsteelfromcountries such as Japan, South Korea, China and RussiaintotheIndianmarket.

The import duty on finished steel products was slashed to 7.5% in the budget for 2021-22. The Indian Steel Association (ISA), a lobby for domestic steelmakers, has written to the Finance Minister, requesting to restore the duty

to 12.5% for flat steel products and increaseitto10%forlongproducts.

About 60% of the steel imports come from countries which India has a free trade agreement with, thus attracting zero basic customs duty. To counter dumping from these countries, steelmakers want a 25% safeguard duty onimports.

Steel imports surged 40% year-onyearto5milliontonnesinApril-December 2022, as per data from the Joint Plant Committee, a Government-backed institution. Meanwhile, exports plunged 60% to 6 million tonnes during this period,

primarily due to the imposition of a 15% export duty by the government which has sincebeenrevoked.

India became a net importer of steel during the December quarter, with imports displacing 8% of the domestic steeldemand, saidtheassociation.

Steelmakers argue that several countries are dumping their excess steel production into India at prices far lower than in their own domestic markets. With imported steel becoming cheaper, domesticmanufacturersclaim that they are being forced to cut prices tounsustainablylowlevels.

Qatar-India Bilateral Trade crosses $18bn in 2022 : Dr Deepak Mittal

DOHA:Thevalueofbilateraltrade between Qatar and India crossed the $18bn level, recording a 33% year-onyear growth, according to Indian Ambassador Dr Deepak Mittal. Speakingtoreportersonthesidelines of ‘India Utsav 2023’ organised recently by LuLu Group, Mittal said: “Bilateral trade between India and Qatar has always grown strength to strength. Last year, we saw that the value of bilateral trade crossed $18bn and I think it is a new landmark since it is a more than 33% growth comparedto2021.

“Oureffortishowtorealiseitstrue potential and how to diversify the trade basket. We are happy that we are among the top five trading missions for Qatar. Our effort continuestofindnewwaysandmeans todoso.”

Mittal also underscored the need for Qatar and India to work on a comprehensive economic partnership in other fields, such as energy, citing Qatar as a “steady and reliable partner” of India’s energy security.

“Our effort on both sides is how to deepen these ties and give it a

comprehensive relationship because India is diversifying its energy mix. We are increasing our gas target from 6% to 15%, so we can work together in terms of gas-based infrastructure, which needs to be developed in India to increase consumption,” the ambassadorpointedout.

Aside from energy, Mittal emphasised that India is also looking to work with Qatar in the fields of food and health security, as well as other areas, such as Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, andeducationandstudentexchange.

Onfoodsecurity,MittallaudedLuLu Group for organising India Utsav 2023, whichnotonlyshowcasesandpromotes a wide variety of Indian products but alsotheimportanceofmillets, citingthe UN’s declaration of 2023 as the ‘InternationalYearofMillets’.

“There is a special effort to presentallvarietiesofmilletsatevery LuLu outlet as 2023 was declared by the UN as ‘International Year of Millets’, explained Mittal, who stressed that millets are seen as a ‘super food’ and is environmentally sustainable.

Farm goods’ exports to hit fresh record in FY23

NEW DELHI: India’s farm trade, which recovered smartly in FY22, will likely hit a record this fiscal, with both exportsandimportsscalingnewpeaks.

Agricultural exports are expected to hit a fresh peak of $50 billion and imports, too, may touch $34-35 billion, official and trade sources told. Farm trade thus remains more unsusceptible toaglobaleconomicslowdown.

Thesedatadon’tincludeexportsand imports of cotton, often considered part ofthetextilesandgarmentstrade.

Without the ban on the outbound shipment of wheat, broken rice and wheat flour, and curbs on sugar, farm exports would shoot up to about $54-55 billion in FY23 and widen the net trade surplus in this segment, some of the sources said. The export restrictions were imposed by the government earlier this fiscal to tackle elevated inflationarypressure.

According to the latest official data,

farm exports grew 12.6% on year until December this fiscal to $38.5 billion, higher than the 10.2% growth in the overall merchandise exports. Such imports rose 11.1% to $26 billion, lower than a 24.9% jump in total goods imports. Vegetable oils, comprising mainly edible oil,accountedfor62%oftheseimports. However, such exports may come under pressure in the coming months once the full impact of the restrictions, imposed in different months, start to hurt after a time lag, analysts said. Wheat exports, for instance, were allowed in limited volumes this fiscal against the letters of credit already issued before the ban; these despatches are now completed. Moreover, the government had banned exports of wheat products on August 27 and broken rice on September 8, the fallout of which will be captured in the trade data in the coming months. Easing commodity prices may also impact

exportrealisation.

Farm exports until December this fiscal were driven by a 40.3% jump in despatches of basmati rice to $3.3 billion; non-basmati rice supplies inchedup3.4%to$4.7billion(thesewere up 13% until August). Exports of plantation crops, especially tea and coffee, rose 14.6% to $1.5 billion, and those of unmanufactured tobacco climbed55%to$677million.

Wheat exports in the first nine months of the fiscal inched up 3.9% to $1.5 billion (mainly due to massive despatches before the ban was slapped).

Farm exports had hit a record $47.4 billion in FY22 (including cotton they hit $50.2 billion), defying supply-chain woes in the wake of the pandemic. These were buoyed by a resurgence in despatches of marine products and a sustained rise in non-basmati rice supplieslastfiscal.

Export of Indian leather and footwear to be $6 billion this fiscal

CHENNAI: The Indian leather and footwear sector estimates exports of nearly $6 billion in the current fiscal as against $5 billion in the previous year as there is a good growth momentum, according to Sanjay Leekha, Chairman, CouncilforLeatherExports.

“Our target is to reach around $14 billion exports by 2030,” he told news persons while announcing the 36 th

India International Leather Fair will be heldinChennaifromFebruary1to3.

Exports of leather, leather products and footwear have registered a ‘substantial’growththisfiscal, reaching $4.25 billion during April to December. With a huge growing global market, the opportunity is good for the industry. Buyers are looking at an alternative to China and India is well positioned to

capitalise on this opportunity. “Buyers are looking at India as a major and reliable supplier of value added products,”hesaid.

“In the last two years, the industry suffered huge losses due to the Covid pandemic. However, we bounced back strongly and achieved the pre-Covid levels. We will do better than the government’starget,”headded.

These manifested in terms of elevated though now easingglobalcommodityprices, heighteningInternational financial market volatility, reversal of capital flows, capital depreciation and looming slowdown in global growthandtrade.

The Economic Survey highlights that during FY23 (till December2022)India’sexportsdisplayedresilienceonthe back of record levels of exports in FY22. Petroleum products, gems & jewellery, organic & inorganic chemicals, drugs & pharmaceuticals were among the leading export items. However, the slowdown in Indian exports is inevitable in a slowing global economy, characterised by slowing global trade. The Survey says that recognising the key role exports play in improving the resilience of the external sector, from a medium to longterm perspective, various export promotion measures are being considered/implemented. These measures would nurture the inherent comparative advantage that Indian exportsembody.

The Economic Survey mentioned that National Logistics Policy would ease the domestic frictions to encourage Indian exports by reducing the cost of internal logistics. It also says thatthelatestFreeTradeAgreements, suchaswithUAEand Australia, would address the external frictions by creating opportunitiesforexportsatconcessionaltariffsandnon-tariff barriers. Thus, the whole ecosystem would evolve in an export-friendlymannerovertime.

The Economic Survey observes that apart from the elevated crude oil prices, the revival of economic activity contributed to an increase in imports. Petroleum, crude & products; electronic goods; coal, coke & briquettes, etc.; machinery, electrical & non-electrical and gold were among the top import items. It mentions that while continued softening of the global commodity price outlook would assist moderate imports going forward, non-gold, non-oilimportsmaynotdeceleratesignificantly.

The Survey states that India achieved an all-time high annual merchandise export of US$ 422 billion in FY’22. Merchandise export were US$ 332 billion over AprilDecember 2022 against US$ 305 billion during the period April-December 2021. Significant strides in exports were registeredindrugsandpharmaceuticals, electronicgoods andorganicandinorganicchemicalssectorinFY’22.India maintained its dominance in world services trade FY’22. India’s services export stood at US$ 254.5 billion in FY’22 recording a growth of 23.5 % over FY’21 and registered a growth 32.7% in April-September 2022 over the same period of previous year. The combined value of goods and services export in April-December 2022 are estimated to be US$ 568.6 billion, showing a growth of 16% compared to April-December2021.

The Survey highlights that efforts are underway to promote international trade settlement in Indian Rupees. Oncetheseinitiativesgaintraction, dependenceonforeign currency would potentially reduce, making the economy less vulnerable to external shocks. In July 2022, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a circular permitting

an additional arrangement for invoicing, payment, and settlement of exports/imports in Indian Rupees (INR) to promote the growth of global trade with emphasis on exports from India and to support the increasing interest in the global trading community in INR as an international currency.Theframeworkinvolvesinvoicingofexportsand imports in INR, market-determined exchange rates between the currencies of the trading partner countries, and settlement through special Rupee Vostro accounts opened with authorised dealer banks in India. The Survey states that the framework is significant as this could largely reduce the net demand for foreign exchange and couldassistIndianexportsingettingadvancepaymentsin Indian Rupees from overseas clients. It mentions that in the longer terms this could promote Indian rupees as an International currency once the rupee settlement mechanismgainstraction.

On the issue of Balance of Payments (BoP), the Economic Survey says that it encountered pressures during the year under review. While the impact of a sharp rise in oil prices was discernible in the widening of the Current Account Deficit (CAD), notwithstanding the cushion provided by the surplus on Invisibles (services, transfer, and income), policy tightening by the US Federal Reserve and the strengthening of the US dollar led to Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) outflows. As a result, the surplus of the capital account was lower than the CAD leadingtoadepletionofforexreservesonaBoPbasis. The Economic Survey expresses optimism that going forward, with the expected easing of crude oil prices, the resilience of net services exports and buoyant inward remittances would result in lower CAD during the remainder of FY23 andisexpectedtobewithinsustainablelimits.

Cont’d. from Pg. 16

Moreover, acomparisonwiththe position of the current account balance (CAB) for selected countries shows that India’s current account deficit (CAD) is modest and within manageable limits.

According to the Economic Survey, the fortified shock absorbers of India’s external sector are in place to cushion the global headwinds be it the formidable forexreserves, sustainableexternal debt indicators, or marketdetermined exchange rate. While forex reserves as of the end December 2022 stood at US$ 562.72 billion, accounting for 9.3monthsofimportsandtheratioofexternaldebttoGDP is at a comfortable level of 19.2 per cent as of endSeptember2022.

In its outlook for the external sector, the Economic Survey states that the export outlook may remain flat in the coming year if global growth does not pick up as indicated by many forecasts. In such cases, diversification of product basket and destination which India is taking through FTAs would be useful to enhance trade opportunities. It also says that given benefit of the lower age of the working population along with the advantages of economies of scale, India has the potential to cater to the global demand for several products in a cost effective manner. The recent softening of global crude oil prices augurs well for India’s POL imports. The survey says that India is cementing its position as the top remittance receiver in the world, with inward remittances projected to be at record levels during 2022. The CAD would be within manageable limits and eminently financeable. The stock of India’s external debt hasbeenprudentlymanaged.

India's growing and diversifying merchandise trade, led to an increase in goods exports by 9-10 percent during the current fiscal: Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO

NEW DELHI: Commenting on the Economic Survey 2022-23, Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO saidthatthesurveyhasrightlyhighlighted India’s growing and diversifying merchandise trade, as the goods exports increased to USD 332.8 billion during April-December 2022-23 as against USD 305billionduringthesameperiodpreviousfiscal.Thecountry has been able to face the global headwinds strongly and has shown its resilience especially the exports sector on the back of strong macro fundamentals. The new diversified markets including those of Brazil, South Africa and Saudi Arabia has led to the increase in exports by up to 2 times, added FIEO President. Dr Sakthivel further added that increasing market size can been mainly attributed to the Trade Agreements especially the recently concluded FTAs with UAE and Australia. The ongoing trade negotiations with UK, EU, Canada, Israel etc, will also add further impetus to our exports.

FIEO Chief reiterated that as Indian economy is staging a

broad-based recovery across sectors, positioning to ascend to pre-pandemic growth levels in FY23, the projections for India's GDP growth is expected to remain robust during FY24 in the range of 6-6.8 %. Credit to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSMEs)hasgrownbyanaverageofaround30% since January 2022 and credit to large industry has been showingdouble-digitgrowthsinceOctober2022,whichisgood sign and will help in further reviving the manufacturing and exports during such these challenging times, said President, FIEO. Reducing the cost of logistics in the country, which now to the tune of 14-15%, comparable to global benchmark, will help in making our exports more competitive worldwide. And in that regard development of an Indian shipping line of global repute is the need of the hour, as exporters are solely at the mercy of foreign shipping lines and the country repatriated over USD 80 Bn as transport services cost during the calendar year 2021. With all these happening, we expect to touch USD 440-450 billion merchandise exports during the currentfiscal, saidFIEO.

Maersk partners with Cozero to enhance emission visibility for International E-commerce

COPENHAGEN/BERLIN:

The integrated logistics company

A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) and the Berlin-based start-up Cozero are pleased to announce a partnership to develop analytics tools to improve Green House Gas (GHG) emissions visibility for international parcel deliveries in Europe. Since entering the European E-Commerce logistics sector in 2021 with the acquisition of B2C Europe, Maersk has delivered millions of international parcels for European online-sellers. Due to a higher supply chain complexity international parcels usually have a larger GHGfootprintthandomesticparcels.

“Our customers in the international e-commerce industry by design have large gaps in their GHG footprint visibility due to the high number of parties involved in the first, middle and last mile delivery process,” said, Christian Grosse, Maersk E-DeliveryChiefProductOfficerinEurope.

Christian Grosse added, “This makes optimizing emissions a challenge for them. With Cozero’s technology we can provide our customers with detailed information on their emissions on every step and component of their international parcels' journey. This will help them to make smart choices andsignificantlyreducetheirGHGfootprint.”

Maersk’sgoalistobeanetzerobusinessacrossallscopes by 2040 with ambitious near term targets for 2030 in all its business segments from ocean and air to landside logistics. Emission visibility across the whole transport chain is a core prerequisite to reach these targets together with our customers.

Selected Maersk E-Delivery customers in Europe will be abletoregisterforthenewtoolasfromFebruary2023totrace andanalysetheemissionsoftheirinternationalparcels.Todo so, detailed information on every parcel, including weight,

routing, and vehicle used to transport it in every leg of the cross-border delivery will be processed according to the globally recognized standards of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. Accurate emissions data and valuable insights will be visualized in a simple and intuitive way, making it easier to identify the main emissions contributors and take the needed actions to reduce them.

“Our platform was developed to make emissions data in complex structures transparent, to understand them and, on thisbasis, toreducetheGHGfootprintofcompaniesandtheir value chain. We are delighted that Maersk has chosen to work with Cozero for this very reason, said Helen Tacke, CEO of Cozero.

Maersk has already successfully tested Cozero’s platform withfirstcustomers.Thepilotofferingwillnowberolledoutto more E-commerce clients. The project is key to Maersk’s strategyofprovidingend-to-endvisibilitytoitscustomersand willeventuallybeintegratedintoMaersk’sexistingEmissions Dashboard, providing it with a new parcel delivery emissions module. Since 2021, Maersk has developed the Emissions Dashboard to provide a one-stop-shop to consolidate emissions data across all carriers and transport modes. It is accredited by Smart Freight Centre (SFC) with an industryleading calculation methodology that is in conformance with theGlobalLogisticsEmissionsCouncil(GLEC)framework.
