COVID-19 showed risk of dependence of Global Supply Chain on any single source: PM Narendra Modi NEW DELHI: The coronavirus pandemic has shown the risk involved in excessive dependence of the global supply chain on any single source, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during a virtual bilateral summit with his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen. The Prime Minister said India is working with Australia and Japan to diversify the supply chain, noting that like-minded countries are welcome to join the initiative. In his opening remarks at the summit, Modi also said the events of the last few months have brought forth the need for countries believing in transparency, democratic value system and rules-based order to work together.

“The pandemic showed the risk involved in excessive dependence of the global supply chain on any single source,” Modi said without naming any country or source. Cont’d. Pg. 17
Port of Antwerp focuses heavily on General Cargo Search begun for Breakbulk candidate for Churchill Dock ANTWERP: The Churchill Do c k , lo ca t e d in t he middle of the port, is set to become a fully-fledged ‘Breakbulk Dock’. On the south side of this dock, a water-linked concession is due for release, with Port of Antwerp resolutely opting to develop general cargo activities there. In doing so, the port is showing that, despite the pre ssure on this segment due to global trade problems and the coronavirus crisis, breakbulk
remains an absolute priority and that it aims to continue supporting this. Multimodal access The area around the Churchill Dock has historically grown into one of the most important sites for breakbulk terminals at the port. The concession in question, located in the middle of existing breakbulk activities, is 15 hectares in size with multimodal accessibility, including direct access to the European Cont’d. Port of Antwerp allows Free energy scan for Inland vessels ANTWERP: As of today and until October 22nd, inland vessels can be registered as candidate for a free energy scan. With these energy scans, Port of Antwerp, North Sea Port and the Flemish public authorities (De Vlaamse Waterweg and Departement Mobility and Public Works) want to stimulate the use of shore power. Shore power is an environmentally friendly and silent way to provide electricity to inland vessels.
The energy scan will be carried out on board of the vessel by a specialist, who will look at both the electrical installation and at the power consumption. The specialist’s report will give the owner of the vessel a better insight in power consumption on board and will offer solutions to reduce it. This will enable the owner to restrict the costs of shore power to a minimum. The energy scan is part of the European research project Clean Inland Shipping (CLINSH).

Central Railway transports 25.46 million tonnes freight during lockdown MUMBAI : In an official press release, Central railways stated that a total of 25.46 million tonnes freight has been transported through a total of 4.85 lakh wagons during the COVID-19 lockdown as well as the unlock from March 23 to September 23. Over 1.83 lakh wagons of coal have been loaded during this period in order to ensure uninterrupted power supply. A total of 10,150 goods trains were run by the Central Railway to carry coal, food grains, sugar, petroleum products, fertilisers, containers, iron and steel, cement, and onions among other things. According to the Central Railway press release, the goods train were maintained fully functional amid the COVID-19 lockdown and unlock in order to ensure that the energy and infrastructure sector could receive the essential freight for smooth functioning. A total of 1,83,538 wagons of coal were transported by the railways to various power plants to make sure that the electricity supply remained uninterrupted. De-oiled cake, cement and petroleum products were among the freight transported by the railways. A multidisciplinary Business Development Unit (BDU) consisting of senior officers has been formed by the Railways at the Zonal and Divisional levels on Central Railway. This unit aims to generate more traffic for railways by frequently interacting with trade and industries. “In terms of wagon loads, it turned out 4,85,202 wagons from March 23rd to September 23rd. Central Railway ran 10,150 goods trains carrying coal, food grains, sugar, petroleum products, fertilizers, containers, iron and steel, cement, onions and other miscellaneous goods. During this period on an average 2,623 wagons of freight have been loaded daily,” read the official statement. “Central Railway carried 5,810 wagons of food grains and sugar; 22,652 wagons of fertilizers and 7,323 wagons of onions for the benefit of farmers; 47,384 wagons of petroleum products; 13,053 wagons of iron and steel; 31,251 wagons of cement; 1,50,212 container wagons and about 23,979 wagons of de-oiled cake and miscellaneous goods,” it further read.

Demand rises for making VOC Port as International Container Transhipment hub T U T I C O R I N : Emphasising the fact that Thoothukudi sits right between the east and west international trade routes, industrialists of southern districts have urged the Union Government to declare Thoothukudi V O Chidambaranar Port as an International Container Transhipment Hub. A transhipment hub in Thoothukudi would get the containers directly shipped to India as against the existing system of containers being transhipped at Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port. The industrialists from southern Tamil Nadu wrote to Tamil Nadu
chief minister, all Tamil Nadu MPs and the union shipping minister to take steps to upgrade VOC port into an International Container Transhipment Hub. Speaking on the issue during Zero Hour at the Lower House recently, Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi highlighted the port’s strategic location. The geopolitical advantage offers to combat the increasing investments of China in Sri Lanka’s ports, she said. The hub, if established, would also enhance prospects for projects such as Sethusamudram Shipping Canal, she said. Former CII (Thoothukudi Chapter) Chairman Edwin Samuel
told that, the port is completely sheltered from natural calamities such as cyclone and tsunami. Association for Tuticorin Hub Port Development’s Core Committee Member David Raja told that, over 60 per cent of Indian containers are transhipped at Colombo, which costs an additional $140 per 40-foot container for exporters and importers. According to the industrialists, the port has and edge over nearby ports as it has “abundant land, skilled workforce, well-aligned roadways, railways and airways with Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and plenty of storage and logistics”.

Slap on Onion Exports
G
overnment is paranoid about onions especially during election seasons. Between 2014 and 2019, the government changed the rules on onion export 17 times, more than three times a year on average. It’s true that governments have fallen due to steep rises in onion price. But it is also true that this was not the only reason for the electoral debacles of the past. This reason was one among many - though most pronounced to the naked eye. There was high inflation. Prices of most of the eatables were soaring. Coupled with general inflation, there were other issues of dissatisfaction by the general voters. Had it been only onion, the presumption could have been closer to reality. Paranoia of voters' wrath sees no reasons. And we had another ban with Bihar elections round the corner. Such bans have never helped in the past. And they wont help this time either. We have had heavy rains in August. Onion harvest is affected. This ban would arrest the price rise. However, no super-computer could exactly predict the exact quantum of price control or duration of this control by this ban leave alone our desi mandarins. Miscalculations are common. No matter how the pendulum swings, nobody will be happy. Farmers will hate this. Their chance of making up the losses of the oversupply time is denied
to them. Consumers will still be angry if the prices soar despite this ban. This is very likely when there is excessive crop damage that can not be made up by the ban alone. It's a complete lose-lose situation for all. The answer lies in completely opening up imports, while not disturbing your exports. Prices would equalise automatically by the market forces. Farmers will be happy. Consumers will be happy. Traders will be happy. And so will be the government. But paranoia harbours no reason. So we would have to face the trauma of this onion ban. And this will not be the last. The government of the day ignores very important factors. Exporting is not easy. The buyers have choices. Price is not the only factor. Stability, reliability and quality count. Such bans kill our export markets. Export bans also cripple trading, shipping, logistics, transports, and related industries with a chain of job losses and loss of wages. Let’s hope that in the future good economics shows the ways to good politics and our government gets over this paranoia. By Capt. P S. Rath Views expressed are of Author only.

The aim is that most of his daily needs are catered to by visiting the railway station thus avoiding unnecessary travel within the city. The redeveloped station to provide multiple access points to passengers The infrastructure at the redeveloped station is envisaged in such a manner that it promotes seamless integration from one mode to another mode. Upon redevelopment, it will provide multiple access points to passengers for easy commute and also a direct linkage between suburban railway, harbour line, long distance, Metro rail and commercial development. Virgin Hyperloop and Bangalore International Airport announce Ground-Breaking Partnership to Conduct Feasibility Study • MoU to study viable hyperloop corridors from BLR Airport • BIAL aims to make BLR Airport a transportation hub • Hyperloop could connect BLR Airport to the city center in about 10 minutes
BENGALURU: Virgin Hyperloop, the category leader in hyperloop technology, and Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), operator of the award-winning Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (KIAB/ BLR Airport), signed a first- of-its-kind Memorandum of Understanding to conduct a feasibility study for a proposed hyperloop corridor from BLR Airport. The MoU was exchanged virtually between Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of Virgin Hyperloop and DP World, and Mr. T.M. Vijay Bhaskar, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka and Chairman of the Board of Directors at BIAL in the presence of Mr. Kapil Mohan, IAS, Principal Secretar y, Infrastructure Development Department, Government of Karnataka. “We are honored to partner with Bangalore International Airport Limited to explore ways in which hyperloop can become a part of the solution to tackle congestion and support economic growth in Bengaluru” said Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of Virgin Hyperloop and Group Chairman and CEO of DP World. “Beyond just the transit of passengers, airports are crucial conduit for goods, especially time-sensitive deliveries. A hyperloop-connected airport would dramatically improve the delivery of cargo and create an ultra-efficient supply chain.” BIAL aims to make BLR Airport a transportation hub that connects people and places together through various modes of transport. In addition to its well-established road network, BLR Airport will soon be connected with the suburban railway in a few weeks and have Metro connectivity in four years. "The Government of Karnataka has implemented several measures to improve the transport infrastructure of the State. The commissioning of a feasibility study for hyperloop connectivity from BLR Airport is another major step towards building the infrastructure required to define mobility for the future, enabling the efficient movement of people," said
Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem at virtual signing ceremony Mr. TM Vijay Bhaskar, Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka and Chairman of the Board of Directors, BIAL. The pre-feasibility study, which focuses on technical, economic and route feasibility, is expected to be completed in 2 phases of six months each. With speeds of up to 1,080 kmph, hyperloop could transport thousands of passengers per hour from BLR Airport to the city center in under 10 minutes, according to the preliminary analysis. “As India’s hub for technology and innovation, Karnataka is embracing hyperloop as a way to keep pace, support clean growth, and open new opportunities for the city,” said Mr. Jay Walder, CEO of Virgin Hyperloop. “A hyperloop-enabled airport would not only allow for faster travel times, it would create a 21st century passenger experience and expand airport capacity.” “At BIAL, our vision is to make BLR Airport the new gateway to India by transforming it as a transportation hub. We are excited to take this landmark step which can catalyse the economic growth of the state of Karnataka and the region. Technological innovation is key to building and sustaining a world-class transportation hub, and this study is an important step forward. This mode of transportation offers enormous economic potential, connecting passengers at unprecedented speeds, with zero emissions,” said Mr. Hari Marar, MD & CEO, BIAL. Travelers could streamline their multimodal trip with seamless check in and security – for both their hyperloop as well as air travel – at centrally-located hyperloop portals.
Container cargo handling at Major Ports drops about 25% in April-August: IPA NEW DELHI: Container cargo handling at India’s Major Ports fell about 25 per cent during April-August amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to ports body IPA data. Container cargo in terms of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) at India’s 12 Major Ports dropped 25 per cent to 3.25 million in the the April-August period of the current fiscal, showed the latest data from the Indian Ports’ Association (IPA). In terms of tonnage, the container cargo declined 22.45 per cent to 49.26 million tonnes (MT) during the period. These ports had handled containers to the tune of 4.34 million TEUs and 63.53 MT in terms of tonnage in the April-August period of the previous financial year. The IPA, which maintains cargo data handled by these ports, in its latest report said “percentage variation from the previous year” in container handling in terms of TEUs and tonnage was 25.01 per cent and 22.45 per cent, respectively. Ratings agency ICRA had earlier said that while all cargo segments are vulnerable, container segment is expected to be more adversely impacted. While general cargo throughput may witness 5-8 per cent
contraction for the full year 2020-21, the container segment may drop 12-15 per cent, it had said. Total cargo traffic includes container cargo, coal, fertilisers, petroleum products and other segments. These ports have registered 16.56 per cent dip in cargo handling to 245.04 MT between April and August this fiscal. Cargo volumes at these ports declined for the fifth straight month in August 2020 and all ports barring Mormugao saw a negative growth. These 12 Ports had together handled 293.67 MT of cargo during April-August 2018-19. Ports like Chennai, Cochin and Kamrajar saw their cargo volumes nosedive about 30 per cent during April-August, while JNPT and Kolkata logged a drop of over 20 per cent. India has 12 Major Ports under the control of the central Government — Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), V O Chidambar nar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia). These ports handle about 61 per cent of the country’s total cargo traffic. These ports handled 705 MT of cargo last fiscal.

Thanks to its can-do attitude and the extensive experience of its many service providers,
the Port of Antwerp is able to ship almost 9 million tons of conventional breakbulk every year, with an eye for quality. Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO at Port of Antwerp: “Antwerp has been the breakbulk port par excellence in Europe for many centuries. Wilhelmsen and thyssenkrupp step-up collaboration, establishing 3D printing joint venture targeting the maritime industry N O R W A Y: U t i l i z i n g thyssenkrupp’s deep expertise in additive manufacturing, alongside Wilhelmsen’s long standing maritime service and supply knowhow, the maritime company’s recent experiences from its 3DP Early Adopter Program will be an important steppingstone for the new venture. The program, where customers have exclusive access to ondemand additive manufacturing was launched by Wilhelmsen’s Marine Products division in December 2019. Customers include Berge Bulk, Carnival Maritime, Thome Ship Management, OSM Maritime Group, Executive Ship Management and Wilhelmsen Ship Management. Based on current data, the maritime industry spends billions of dollars every year on spare parts; with 50% of these vessels are older than 15 years, availability of parts are limited. This makes fulfillment of orders for maritime spare parts costly and complicated, and in fact, the supply chain overheads involved may often far outstrip the cost of the part itself. Moreover, traditional manufacturing processes such as machining and casting often involve long lead-times stretching into months. The traditional model of manufacturing and distribution of spare parts has largely remained unchallenged for decades, until now. “We are very excited to enter the next phase of our 3D printing journey, hand in hand with thyssenkrupp. With this joint venture we believe we will take the lead as the defacto supplier of 3D printed maritime spare parts, continuing to bring the benefits of AM technology to shipping companies by reducing the cost of spare parts, lead times and
environmental footprint”, says Hakon Ellekjaer, Head of Venture, 3D Printing, Wilhelmsen. Additive manufacturing, or 3D Printing, disrupts the costly and time-consuming spare parts status quo, as suitable components are fabricated near the vessel location in a matter of weeks, sometimes days. “We are already seeing a very positive response from our maritime customers on the additive manufacturing adoption,” shared Abhinav Singhal, Director of thyssenkrupp Innovations. “They are realising the benefits from faster lead times, reduced costs and having more resilience in their spare parts supply chain. This is going to be a true gamechanger for the maritime industry and we are proud to offer it alongside Wilhelmsen.” The joint venture will position Wilhelmsen and thyssenkrupp as leaders in the maritime AM fulfillment platform, offering a customized, on demand, and more efficient process of obtaining selected spare parts. Expected to be headquartered in Singapore, it will serve the key port locations around the world. In addition to the collaboration with thyssenkrupp, Wilhelmsen continue to work with additive manufacturing company Ivaldi Group on a number of 3D printing software applications.
