BHAVNAGAR / GANDHINAGAR : Union Minister Shri Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday inaugurated a series of projects totaling Rs 149 crore in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district.
“Bhavnagar is being developed as the largest hub for container manufacturing in India Currently, 95% of containers are constructed in China. In Bhavnagar, three companies have already begun container construction. The state and Central Governments are committed to transforming Bhavnagar into a Container manufacturing hub,” Mandaviya said while addressing reporters.
In a parallel developments, Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel hosted New Jersey’s Lieutenant Governor Tahesha L. Way in Gandhinagar on Friday Their discussions focused on strengthening the sister-state agreement through cultural, economic, and industrial
exchanges. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to increasing people-to-people ties, facilitated by Index-B as the main channel for ongoing dialogue and partnerships.
Chief Minister Patel underscored Gujarat’s leadership in green hydrogen, renewable energy, and fintech sectors, while Lieutenant Governor Way showed interest in exploring mutual investments and collaborative projects.
NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Road, Transport and H i g h w a y s S h r i N i
Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor that the uncertainty over the construction of a road connecting Vizhinjam International Seaport to the NH66 will be resolved within 10 days Shri Gadkari gave this assurance in hisresponsetotheissueraisedbyTharoorintheLokSabha
The road connecting the Vizhinjam port to NH66 is important for the effective movement of goods, particularly containers, in and out of the port.
The proposed inauguration of the Vizhinjam International Seaport next month heightens the need for this infrastructural development. According to Tharoor, unless the road and rail connectivity are available for the movement of containers, the port cannot be utilized at its potential as a major maritime hub.
Tharoor laid particular stress on making robust connectivity for the port by stating that the port will definitely play a pivotal role in uplifting the economic growth of the region by providing easier and smooth trade flows across India and globally It will only hamper the
free movement of goods, thus hindering the capabilities of the port.
Shri Gadkari said that he completely agree with Tharoor’s assessment of the matter and that the road must be developed for the prosperity of the port. Long discussions on the construction of the road, the Union Minister revealed, have been held by him with Kerala’s Chief Minister, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, in the last few days. This means everyone will pull his weight to treat the issue on time.
The confidence by Gadkari will ensure that once the port is launched full-scale, it will begin functioning effectively because of the timely completion of the road construction, which has made easy the transportation of items into and out of it to ensure that processes within it are efficient for competitiveness at the global level.
Tharoor expressed gratitude to the Union minister for adopting a favourable stance on this critical issue concerning the port and stated that he would continue to assess the progress of efforts to connect Vizhinjam with rail and road networks and take necessary actions.
GANDHINAGAR : Inspired by global port cities like Rotterdam, Dubai, and Antwerp, the Gujarat Government is reviving a decadeold plan to develop India’s first greenfield port city Spanning 500 sq km, the ambitious project aims for completion by 2047, with an estimated investment of Rs. 1.5 lakh crore Once realized, it promises to give Gujarat a significant maritime advantage on the national stage.
At the heart of the project is a massive port designed to handle 500 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), surrounded by integrated port-related industries, marine activities, residential areas, and recreational facilities. “This is a long-term initiative, and we are currently in the process of selecting a site from four shortlisted locations,” said a senior state Government official.
Gujarat currently dominates cargo handling at nonmajor ports, accounting for 66 percent of the total, far ahead of Andhra Pradesh (14 percent) and Maharashtra (9 percent). Between April and October 2024 alone, Gujarat’s
non-major ports, including private hubs like Mundra and Pipavav, managed 229 million tonnes of cargo By 2047, the state aims to quadruple its capacity to handle 2,200 MTPA, solidifying its maritime supremacy
Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Surat, a n d Va l s a d a r e t h e f o u r shortlisted sites for the planned port-city. These locations were selected based on key factors such as proximity to deepwater access, availability of waterfront space, connectivity to robust road and rail networks, and potential to support sustainable industrial growth.
Government insiders say the strongest contender among the four sites is Maroli/Nargol in Valsad district. Bhavnagar’s strengths include its deep draught and strategic location, while Surat located near the industrial powerhouse of Hazira — finds favour for its established infrastructure and close links to major ports and industries, making it ideal for both industrial and portled development.

Salt pan lands are low-lying tracts of land where seawater periodically flows in, leaving behind deposits of salt and minerals This natural process plays a critical role in maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems.
In a letter dated September 20, 2024, accessed by an English Newspaper followed by updates on O
transfer of these lands from the Department for P romotion of
Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
The Maharashtra parcel is part of a larger national target of 40,294.60 acres spanning states including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha.
A senior official from the salt-pan office said that the Palghar land is strategically important, particularly for the upcoming Vadhvan Port, which is poised to elevate India’s maritime trade capacity

NEW DELHI: India’s outbound shipments to nine out of top 20 export destinations contracted in November that led to a surprise exports contraction by 4.9 per cent during the month, trade data released by the Commerce Department on Monday showed. In contrast, India’s record merchandise imports at $70 billion during the same month was driven by t r i p l e - d i g i t g r o w t h i n i n w a r d shipments from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), South Africa, and Switzerland. India imports most of its
gold from these three countries. India imported gold worth $14.9 billion in November. Contraction in merchandise exports in November was led by dip in s h i p m e n t s t o t h e U S , t h e Netherlands, China, and Bangladesh. While a dip in prices of petroleum products led to a fall in exports to the Netherlands, economic and political turmoil in China and Bangladesh, respectively, saw a contraction in shipments to the neighbouring countries.
“With prospective US tariff hikes against China, India’s imports from China could rise as Beijing tries to push away its deflationary pressures by exporting cheaper goods to other economies. This is something India, along with other Asian nations, is already facing in many goods categories Hence, India’s goods trade deficit will need to be monitored over the next few months and will require deft policy responses from the authorities,” CRISIL said in a research note.
NEW DELHI: Taxpayers with an aggregate annual turnover (AATO) exceeding 100 crore have been r e q u i r e d t o u s e m u l t i - f a c t o r authentication (MFA) since August 2023.
According to an advisory on the GST portal, MFA will become mandatory for accessing updated versions of the E-Way Bill and E-Invoice systems for all taxpayers starting April 1, 2025 Additionally, new provisions will be introduced to restrict the generation of E-Way Bills.
The rollout of MFA will occur in phases:
• From January 1, 2025, it will apply to taxpayers with an AATO exceeding Rs. 20 crore.
• From February 1, 2025, it will cover taxpayers with an AATO exceeding Rs. 5 crore.
• By April 1, 2025, it will be mandatory for all taxpayers and users.
Since August 20, 2023, MFA has been mandatory for taxpayers with an AATO exceeding Rs. 100 crore, and since September 11, 2023, it has been optional for those with an AATO exceeding Rs. 20 crore.
These changes have been made as
the National Information Centre (NIC) will roll out updated versions of the EWay Bill and E-Invoice Systems effective January 1, 2025 “These updates are aimed at enhancing the security of the portals, in line with best practices and government guidelines,” the advisory said.
An E-Way Bill is a document required to be carried by a person in charge of the conveyance carrying any consignment of goods of value exceeding Rs 50,000 It is generated from the GST Common Portal for the E-Way Bill system by registered persons or transporters who cause the movement of goods of consignment before the commencement ofsuchmovement
As per Rule 48(4) of CGST Rules, the notified class of registered persons h a v e t o p r e p a r e a n i n v o i c e b y uploading specified particulars of the invoice (in FORM GST INV-01) on the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) and obtain an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) After following the above ‘e-invoicing’ process, the invoice copy containing inter alia the IRN (with QR Code) issued by the notified supplier to the buyer is commonly referred to as ‘e-invoice’ in GST.
It is important to note that ‘e-invoice’ in ‘e-invoicing’ doesn’t mean the g e n e r a t i o n o f a n i n v o i c e b y a government portal The invoice not registered on the portal will not be valid. In such a situation, input tax credit (ITC) on the same cannot be availed by the recipient and will attract applicable penalties Since August 1, 2023, E-Invoice is mandatory for assesses with AATO of Rs. 5 crore.
The advisory also announced new restrictions on E-Way Bill generation. Starting January 1, 2025, E-Way Bills can only be generated for documents dated within 180 days of the generation date For example, documents dated before July 5, 2024, will no longer be eligible for E-Way Bill generation after January 1, 2025.
Additionally, the extension of E-Way Bills will be limited to 360 days from their original generation date. For instance, an E-Way Bill generated on January 1, 2025, can only be extended until December 25, 2025.
The advisory urged taxpayers to familiarize themselves with these updates and make the necessary adjustments to their compliance processes.
NEW DELHI: India's merchandise trade deficit in November widened to an all-time high of $37.84 billion from $27.1 billion in October, as the nation’s import bill ballooned and exports declined.
India's merchandise exports increased by 2 17% year-on-year in the A p r i l t o N o v e m b e r p e r i o d , t h e Government data showed, while imports rose at a higher pace of 8 35%, widening the country's trade deficit
India's merchandise exports in November stood at $32.11 billion, while imports were $69.95 billion, as per data. In the previous month, merchandise exports were at $39.2 billion and imports stood at $66 34 billion
Gold imports in November reached an all-time high of USD 14 8 billion
In October, the merchandise trade
deficit stood at $27.14 billion.
The fall in petroleum exports pulled down the November goods exports, Sunil Barthwal, Commerce Secretary, said at a press briefing. Petroleum exports fell due to price effect, he added.
Economists had expected the country's November trade deficit to be $23 9 billion, according to a Reuters poll. A widening trade deficit may put further pressure on India’s currency, which weakened 0.5% against the dollar last month, marking its worst month since March.
According to trade experts, a deficit is not always bad, if a country is i
intermediary products to boost manufacturing and exports. However, it puts pressure on the domestic currency
Economic think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that a bilateral trade deficit with a country isn't a major issue unless it makes us overly reliant on that country's critical supplies. However, a rising overall trade deficit is harmful to the economy India has been recording sustained trade deficits since 1980 mainly due to the strong imports growth, particularly of mineral fuels, oils and waxes and bituminous substances and pearls, precious and semi-precious stones and jewellery In recent years, the biggest trade deficits were recorded with China, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and I
surpluses with the US, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and Vietnam.

Responding to November, 2024 merchandise exports of USD 32 11 billion, which declined by 4 85%, FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar said that such a dip in exports is mainly on the back of continuing global economic uncertainties. Mr Kumar further added that the ongoing international trade disruptions along with the volatility in crude and metal prices have also played key role in the declining value of exports to some extent. The rising tensions between Israel-Iran has continuously led to logistical challenges with regard
to international trade getting impacted as most of our trade to Europe, Africa, CIS and Gulf region are happening through the Red Sea route or the gulf region prompting buyers to have little large inventories. FIEO President also said that the challenges with regard to trade finance still remains the key for the MSMEs as it is really impacting the competitiveness of Indian products in the global markets.
FIEO Chief said that imports increased by 27% to $69 95 billion in November compared to $55.06 billion in the year-ago month, mainly on account of gold imports in November, which
reached an all-time high of $14.8 billion, thereby resulting in a trade deficit of $37.84 billion during the month.
FIEO President further reiterated that the urgent and immediate need of the hour is to take steps on the liquidity front with deeper interest subvention support and extension of interest equalisation scheme for at least 5 years, creating a predictable business environment for the exporters The imposition of cap of Rs 50 lakh per company in the Interest Equalisation Scheme has hit many MSMEs and they are unable to decide on order with nonavailability of further subvention
