NEW DELHI: The Steel Ministry, along with the Commerce Ministry, has reportedly initiated the process to review export duty and a phase-wise removal is being mooted, those aware of the development said. The Ministry is said to be in favour of removal of duty on stainlesssteelinthefirstphase.Asperaninternaldocument / presentation of the Steel Ministry at a meeting on September 5, it was pointed out that stainless steel is an exportdependent item and its numbers could improveifdutyisremoved. However,HRcoilsand CR coils –two key items that have been driving steel export numbers – should not be immediately opened up as it might lead to increase in domestic prices,

Several instances of audit are triggered by mismatches between the automatically generated return of purchases of raw materials and services and the tax return filed by a business showing a summary of transactions which forms the basis for paying taxes. On vision of building logistical efficiency in the Country, he opined, we’re looking at four key areas. First is capacity enhancement in terms of infrastructure, transportation, warehousing and packaging. Second includes rationalizing time consuming processes which are leading to inefficiencies and increasing the cost of logistics. Third is greater adoption of digital technology and automation of processes. And lastly, focus on human resourcedevelopment.“We’reidentifying educational deficit, skill gaps of existing and potential resources in the logistics sector. BRUSSELS: The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) enhancing the existing cooperation between the two organizations.BackinJuly 2002, the two entities had signed and implemented a MoU. Some 20 years on, and in the light of developments in international trade, the need to amend the initial agreement became apparent, particularly to take more effective account of the current challenges concerning trade facilitation, as well as the proliferation and complexity of criminal activity involving tobacco products, medicines and medical equipment.Setagainst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and its major health, economic and social implications worldwide, this updated MoU is now broader in its scope.

LONDON: The collapse of China CIMC’s planned takeover of Maersk’s container manufacturing arm maintains some level of competition in the sector and enables further innovation in box equipment and systems developmentforthecoldchainindustry.ChinaInternationalMarineContainer’s (CIMC’s) decision to withdraw its near US$1 billion takeover offer for Maersk Container Industry (MCI), which is the world’s third largest manufacturer of reefer containers, on anti-trust concerns, means further consolidation in an already independentgloballowersuggestdealreeferwhichtheAnti-Trustauthoritytransactionconcentratedandlargelystate-controlledindustryisaverted.CIMC’smovefollowslengthyreviewsintotheby,amongothers,Germany’scompetitionandtheUSDepartmentofJustice(DoJ)whosedivisionwasplanningtosueinaUScourtagainstdealifitwasnotterminated.Ultimately,bothCIMC,isChina’slargestproducerofbothdryfreightandcontainers,andMCIcametothedecisionthatthecouldnotproceed.TheDoJclaimedtherewassufficientevidencetothatthemergercouldhaveledtohigherprices,qualityoutputandcompromisedresilienceacrosssupplychains,whileeliminatingMCIasaninnovativecompetitor.

Reefer container production market shares: pre- and post-merger

A combination of CIMC and MCI would certainly have squeezed the market, giving the combined group control over 60% of total reefer container production, according to Drewry estimates. Moreover, alongside Dong Fang International Container (DFIC), which is also effectively controlled by the state, Chinese Government-related entities would account for almost 90% of the global productionofinsulated/reefercontainers(seechart).Interestingly,MCI’sreefercontainermanufacturing

process is different to that of its Chinese competitors. Whereas CIMC, DFIC and Fuwa Guangdong have all converted their factor paint plants to using zinc primers on the Corten steel frames and waterborne coatings for the panels/doors, MCI has invested in new machinery that allows the established hot zinc spray paint system to continue. IQAX eBL can achieve the delivery of bill of lading “on the chain” in real time, which enables the consignee to directly initiate paperless switch of bill of lading upon

The launch of IQAX eBL will not only significantly reduce paper consumption but will also effectively reduce carbon emissions generated by the manual transmission of documents, as it goes in line with green andlow-carbondevelopmenttrends.Moreimportantly,IQAXeBLgets a jump start in facilitating trade based on the safe and efficient flow of bills of lading to enhance the shipper’s ability to plan and manage the supply chain. It is of extraordinary significance in helping customers win the market competitionanddelivergreatervalue.
