EU Commission President Names Landmark Methanol Vessel “Laura Mærsk”
COPENHAGEN: The World’s first methanol-enabled container vessel will c a r r y t h e name “Laura Mærsk”, the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed at a ceremony in Copenhagen recently
The name was revealed in the Port of Copenhagen on Thursday during a ceremony, when the ship’s godmother, President von der Leyen, christened the vessel by breaking a champagne bottle over the bow Besides the godmother, Maersk Chair Robert Uggla and Maersk Chief Executive Officer Vincent Clerc also spoke at the ceremony.
“Laura Maersk is a historic milestone for shipping across the globe. It shows the entrepreneurial spirit that has characterized Maersk since the founding of the company However, more importantly this vessel is a very realproof point that when we as an industry unite through determined efforts and partnerships, a tangible and optimistic path toward a sustainable future emerges. This new green vessel is the breakthrough we needed, but we still have a long way
to go before we make it all the way to zero,”said , Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk.
“Laura” is a proud Maersk name deeply rooted in some of the company’s very early innovative landmarks. When Captain Peter Maersk Moller bought his first steamship in 1886, he named her “Laura”. With its steam engine, “Laura” was a product of the second industrial revolution, making its impact on the shipping industry significant.
Furthermore, “Laura” was the first vessel to wear the white seven-pointed star on a light blue background. This symbol later would become the logo of A.P . Moller - Maersk.
Maersk has an ambitious 2040 target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions and aims to transport a minimum of 25% of Ocean cargo using green fuels by 2030. The 2,100 TEU (twenty-foot-equivalent) feeder vessel is an important step toward the long-term objective of gradually renewing the entire Maersk fleet to operate solely on green fuels. Maersk has 24 additional methanol vessels on order for delivery between 2024 and 2027 and a policy to only order new, owned vessels that come with a green fuel option.

India needs efficient Multi-Modal transport system: President
NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu recently said the country needs an efficient multi-modal transport system for which rail, road, air and water transportation should be dealt with in a holistic approach rather than in isolation. Addressing a group of 213 probationers (2019, 2020 and 2021 batches) from different services of the Indian Railways at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre here, she said unlike any commercial organisation the railways is asociallifelineofthecountry.
Besides, it carries the dreams of ordinary people and at the same time,
its nationwide connectivity showcases nation’s diversity, the president said.
“The country needs an efficient multi-modal transport system for which rail, road, air and water transportation should be dealt with a holistic approach and not in isolation.
“ I u r g e y o u a l l t o w o r k i n coordination with the officers of other departments also for achieving the goal of an atmanirbhar and developed nation,” Murmu told the probationers.
Asserting that the technological changes are taking place at an unprecedented speed and scale,
she asked the officers to work collectively and make the railways a future-ready organisation. Murmu said trains and their j o u r n e y s h a v e a l w a y s b e e n a n important part of people’s lives.
India aims Logistics Performance Index ranking in Top 25 by 2030 : Special Secretary (Logistics)
NEW DELHI: India is aiming to further improve its ranking in the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) to top 25 by 2030, as per Sumita Dawra, Special Secretar y, Logistics, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
India was ranked 44th on the index in 2018 and In April, India ranked at 38 out of 139 countries in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index. The country aims to break into the top 25 countries by 2030 The country’s performance has drastically improved from 2014, when it was ranked 54th on the LPI.
The DPIIT is also in talks with World Bank as well as International Monetary Fund to change the methodology while calculating the ranking under LPI.
“At the moment, the world bank’s LPI is based on a very subjective analysis. We are trying to bring in objectivity by impressing upon world bank how we are using technology to improve logistics in the country by way of Unified Logistics Integration Platform (ULIP),” Dawra added S h e w a s s p e a k i n g a t a
press briefing in New Delhi.
Dawra said that DPIIT officials have beencontinuouslyengagingwithofficials of the World Bank to draw their attention to the need for greater emphasis on objective-based methodology for LPI scoring The World Bank uses six parameters to measure performance of countries that include customs, infrastructure, international shipments, logistics competence, tracking and tracing, andtimelines
“We feel this is a very narrow way of ranking India on important global indices andthereisalotofworkgoingonandthat should be reflected in the calculations. We have analyzed the parameters and thewayitisdone WewouldliketheWorld Bank to include our interventions and reforms which are contributing to improve logistics in India,” Dawra said duringapressbriefing
She also said that the report on a framework to assess the logistics cost in the country is ready and it would be released by the end of the month as it would help get a realistic estimate of the cost
As per Government’s estimates,
India’s logistics cost stands at 8-14% of the country’s GDP (gross domestic product).
”Now we have a baseline estimate and from next year we will do a survey based thing to calculate the cost,” she said, adding that the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and ADB have been engaged in the exercise.
Dawra added that the service improvement group constituted in March to resolve logistics related issues has so far assessed 80 issues from different departments including revenue, railways, and road.
O f t h e 8 0 i s s u e s e x a m i n e d , 34 have been resolved There are 21 issues pertaining to the CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) such as matters pertaining to some ports, GST and ICEGATE (Indian Customs EDI Gateway).
As many as 106 firms have signed non-disclosure agreements with the government to access data from the U L I P, l a u n c h e d o n S e p t e m b e r 17 last year as part of the national logistics policy
India’s Exports decline 7% to $34.48 billion in August
NEW DELHI: India’s merchandise exports contracted for a seventh consecutive month in August, declining 6.9 per cent year-on-year to $34.48 billion, owing to weak external demand, data released by the Commerce Department showed recently The Government, however, said that exports h a d s t a r t e d “ s t a b i l i s i n g ” a n d “greenshoots” were clearly visible.
The merchandise trade deficit, or the gap between exports and imports, on the other hand, widened to a 10month high of $24.16 billion in August as higher crude oil prices and robust domestic demand led to a nearly 11 per cent jump in imports on a sequential basis.
Imports stood at $58.64 billion last month, down 5.2 per cent year-on-year While exports and imports have been declining since the beginning of 2023, the pace of contraction has slowed July onwards, the data showed.
C o m m e r c e S e c r e t a r y S u n i l Barthwal said a high base of last year also affected the contraction in exports. While falling commodity prices this year impacted the value of exports, they remained positive in terms of volume, he added.
“ Pe s s i m i s m i s t u r n i n g i n t o optimism now as greenshoots are clearly visible. The industry said their export orders were better and they were also optimistic about export order books. This month (in August), at least last month’s (July’s) story is repeating.
T h i s m e a n s t h a t t h e r e ’ s a n improvement in terms of the global exports scenario,” Barthwal said in a media briefing.
On the brighter side, non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports, also known as core exports, reversed their trend of contraction and grew 3.2 per cent in August to $26 billion.
Barthwal said that going ahead,
firming oil prices might impact commodity prices, which, in turn, could impact exports.
Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ICRA, said that with the monthly merchandise trade deficit prints averaging much higher during JulyAugust vis-à-vis April-June 2023, India’s current account deficit is likely to widen in Q2FY24 from $10-12 billion expected in Q1FY24.
Merchandise exports witnessed contraction in 15 out of the 30 key sectors in August. Key export items that dipped in August included petroleum products (-30.61 per cent), gems and jewellery (-21.94 per cent), readymade garments (-8.15 per cent), and organic and inorganic chemicals (-18.83 per cent).
Among key sectors that experienced growth included electronic goods (26.29 per cent) and engineering goods (7.73 per cent).

Sluggish Global economic & demand in EU, UK and China coupled with subdued growth in US & Australia led to modest performance in Exports: FIEO
N E W D E L H I :
Reacting to the overall A u g u s t 2 0 2 3 e x p o r t figures of USD 34 48 billion (with a decline of 6 86 percent) compared to August 2022, Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO said that sluggish global economic contraction and demand specially in major economies like EU, UK and China coupled with the subdued growth in economies like US and Australia has led to such a modest performance in exports during the recent months. Manufacturing across the Euro Zone and the US has also contracted due to persistent policy tightening measures by both the US Fed and the European Central Bank s q u e e z i n g f i n a n c e s , a d d e d Dr A Sakthivel. As Asian economies are showing mixed bags, countries across the continent have struggled t o m a i n t a i n t h e m o m e n t u m .
The softening of the commodity prices across the globe have also pulled down value-wise exports Countries are showing decline in exports including China whose exports have contracted by almost 9 percent in August 2023. geopolitical tensions, disruption in global supply chain due to RussiaUkraine war, monetary tightening and recessionary fears, which has continuously led to a fall in consumer spendings across the globe especially in advanced economies, reiterated FIEO President.
FIEO Chief added that we are of the view that exports will start showing better growth numbers, as things are expected to improve in the next few months with more fresh orders coming and order bookings for the Christmas and New Year season.
15 out of 30 key products sectors, which have shown positive growth during the month of August 2023, include Iron Ore, Oil Meals, Ceramic Products & Glassware, Electronic Goods, Cotton Yarn/Fabs./Made-Ups, Handloom Products Etc., Tobacco, Oil Seeds, Meat, Dairy & Poultry
P r o d u c t s , C a s h e w, F r u i t s & Ve g e t a b l e s , C a r p e t , C e r e a l Preparations & Miscellaneous Processed Items, Engineering Goods, Drugs & Pharmaceuticals and Marine Products FIEO Chief said that though the decline in imports is a good sign for the country, however, that has also led to de-growth in our key export sectors like petroleum products, gems & jewellery, organic &
inorganic chemicals etc.
FIEO President further reiterated that the need of the hour is to provide further momentum to the economy through easy and low cost of credit to the MSMEs, long-pending demand for marketing support for promoting Brand India products and services globally and GST exemption on Freight on exports Besides, the interest equalisation support across all sectors of export and providing further extension to the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme by one more year till March 31, 2024, will provide much needed cushion during such tough and challenging times And last but not the least, greeting and congratulating the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, Dr Sakthivel said that with the grand and successful completion of the G20 Summit under the PM's dynamic and able leadership, the world has seen the growing diplomatic strength of India and the key role it plays across globe. Imports from Russia doubles to $25.69 billion in April-August
NEW DELHI: The country's imports from Russia almost doubled to USD 25 69 billion during the April-August period this fiscal due to increasing inbound shipments of crude oil and fertiliser, according to the commerce ministry data With this, Russia has become India's second-largest import source during the first five months of this fiscal.
The imports were USD 13.77 billion during April-August 2022 From a market share of less than 1 per cent in India's import basket before the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russia's share of India's oil imports rose to over 40 per cent.
India, the world's third-largest
crude importer after China and the United States, has been buying Russian oil that was available at a discount after some in the West shunned it as a means of punishing Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine.
The ministry's data showed that imports from China dipped to USD 42 billion during the period against USD 43.96 billion in the same period last year
Similarly, imports from the US declined to USD 18 billion during the period under review from USD 21.86 billion in April-August 2022.
Imports from UAE too contracted to USD 17 billion during April-August 2023 compared to USD 22.32 billion a year ago.
On the export front, India's exports to six of its top 10 destinations have recorded a negative growth rate during the period.
During the first five months of this fiscal, the country's merchandise exports to the US, UAE, China, Singapore, Germany, and Bangladesh have dipped.
However, exports to the UK, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia have recorded positive growth.
India's exports declined 6 86 per cent to USD 34.48 billion, the seventh month in a row, in August this year due to a fall in shipments from key sectors like petroleum and gems and jewellery on subdued global demand.

Piyush Goyal encourages engineering community to achieve US$100 billion export target in engineering services, design, construction, and R&D by 2030
NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal, encouraged the engineering community to achieve the US$100 billion export target in e n g i n e e r i n g s e r v i c e s , d e s i g n , constr uction, and research and d e v e l o p m e n t ( R & D ) b y 2 0 3 0 . While addressing at the ‘Global Services Export Conclave on Design, Engineering, Construction, R&D and Environmental Services: Sustainable E n e r g y, Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n , a n d Infrastructure’ in New Delhi today, the Minister extended his war mest compliments and best wishes to engineers across the nation on Engineers Day, 15th September
Shri Goyal highlighted India's growing global stature, as evidenced by the successful organization of the G20 Summit 2023 under India’s Presidency. The world's recognition of India’s capabilities and leadership is evident from the adoption of the G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration on the first day of the G20 Summit 2023 with significant
and bold decisions, he added. He said that India's voice is becoming the voice of not just the Global South but also the world now
The Minister called upon all Indians to celebrate this as a collective success of 140 Crore Indians. He urged Indian companies to expand globally, capturing new markets and leveraging India's abundant talent pool of STEM (Science, Te c h n o l o g y, E n g i n e e r i n g , o r Mathematics) graduates to become leading global companies in their sectors.
S h r i G o y a l e n c o u r a g e d t h e engineering leaders to consider the German model of specialization and certification in specific areas, suggesting that having specialists and generalists within the engineering field could contribute to India's growth and innovation He noted that India's National Education Policy, introduced in 2020, has opened doors for lateral changes in education, allowing students to explore diverse fields midstream This flexibility, he believes, will lead to a more skilled and diverse workforce He recounted how the
older policies in the country constrained thechoicesforstudents.
Furthermore, Shri Goyal called upon the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and the Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) to conduct a study on international practices that restrict Indian engineering firms' participation in global projects. The M i n i s t e r e m p h a s i z e d t h a t t h e Government under the leadership of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will explore reciprocal actions based on this research study to ensure a level playing f i e l d f o r I n d i a n e n g i n e e r s a n d businesses.
Regarding India's stance on global trade, Shri Goyal emphasized the country's commitment to fair and balanced Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations He emphasized that India's approach involves extensive consultations with stakeholders to ensure equitable deals that benefit the nation's businesses, professionals, and MSMEs. He said that the aim is to enter into an FTA which is a win-win for both countries.
Basic Customs duties on 8 US products will continue; only retaliatory tax removed
NEW DELHI: The basic customs duties and other levies will continue on eight products, including apple and walnut from the US as well as other countries, a senior Government official said recently. Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce Peeyush Kumar said that India has imposed retaliatory customs
duties on 28 American products in 2019 against US measure to imposes duties on certain steel and aluminium products.
He added that India has withdrawn only retaliatory duty on these eight products -- chickpeas, lentils, almonds, walnut, apple, boric acid, diagnostic reagents -- in 2023 and its value of
imports into India from the US stood at USD1 08billionin2022-23
In return, India has gained market access for indefinite period into the U S t h r o u g h c o m m i t m e n t s f o r granting approval to 70 per cent and 80 per cent of exclusion requests, respectively, for Indian steel and aluminum products
Critical years ahead for Container Shipping : Analysts
LONDON: Increasing congestion at container depots and the end of the 2M alliance in January 2025 could see further supply chain disruption and a n o t h e r s h a k e - u p i n c a r r i e r collaboration and operations.
MSC and Maersk announced the break up of their alliance earlier this year, but the fall-out from that decision will not be fully realised until January 2025 when the alliance is formally ended.
Speaking at the Container xChange Digital Container Summit, John Fossey of Drewry Shipping Consultants said, “If in January 2025 the division of 2M leads to four or five stand alone carriers then rates could be very challenged as a result.”
With an excess of capacity still chasing too little freight Fossey said that carriers could revert to the days where they had little price discipline, aiming for market share to make sure their huge newbuildings achieve the maximum utilisation levels.
Supply is set to outstrip demand in every year from 2022 onwards, where growth from that year reached 0 5%, with this year’s growth forecast to be 0 3%
recoveringto2 6%and2 9%in2024-25
In the same period capacity increased by 4.5% in 2022 and is forecast to increase by 5%, 6.35 and 5.2% in 202325. Only in 2021 did demand, at 7%, outperform capacity growth at 4.7%.
According to Fossey Drewry had expected global container movements to pass the 1 billion mark, in 2027, but the pandemic and subsequent events such as the war in Ukraine has seen the consultants revise those forecasts to 935 million teu by 2035.
Senior analyst at Alphaliner Stefan Verberckmoes, is more optimistic pointing out that both Maersk and MSC a r e c a r r i e r s t h a t w a n t t h e i r independence to make operational decisions, but that both carriers are still co-operating with each other
“Both MSC and Maersk have announced independent services since the split of the alliance was announced,” said Verberckmoes, “2M was more of a vessel sharing agreement, and they both said now that they are stopping the vessel sharing agreement, they can start sharing vessels.”
Of course, this is not a new said Alphaliner Hapag-Lloyd already buy
slots on CMA CGM’s FAL 3 service, which is the Ocean Alliance’s fifth loop, butHapagmarkettheserviceastheFe9.
He also pointed out that Maersk and MSC operate six Asia to North Europe loops and they have enough vessels to operate three loops each, while Verberckmoes does not believe that shippers require daily sailings out of Shanghai, Yantian and Ningbo, but that three a week would be acceptable.
I n a d d i t i o n , w i t h t h e I M O regulations on carbon intensity becoming more stringent, Drewry estimates that around 30% of the existing fleet will need to slow steam, that will reduce the effective capacity by around 7%.
Moreover, congestion at container storage depots around the globe could o n c e a g a i n c a u s e d e l a y s t o repositioning containers and getting boxes to the shippers for loading.
Danny Den Boer, from container lessor Seacube, said, “Depot rates in Asia are significantly lower than in the U S w i t h t h e s l o w d o w n i n manufacturing, but depots in the US, particularly on the West Coast are very congested.
