India contributing 15% to global GDP: IMF Chief Economist
W A S H I N G T O N D . C : Gita Gopinath, the first Deputy M a n a g i n g D i r e c t o r o f t h e International Monetary Fund, recently said India’s contribution to global GDP is around 15 per cent In an exclusive interview the economist also said India will become the thirdlargest economy by 2027-28, based on current projections
Calling India an “engine of global growth”, Gopinath, however, added that there is a lot more work that needs to be done.
“The more important thing is to maintain a high growth momentum for
many more years in just the next four or five years. And that will require structural reforms. India is a large country, so in per capita terms, that will still be a small number even if we’re the third largest economy So India needs to keep pushing on that front to keep the growth momentum going much more,”saidtheeconomist She added that the expected growth rate of the country for the current fiscal year is over six per cent. According to the economist, the two factors which are driving the growth are public investment and resilient consumption spending.
ON STRUCTURAL REFORMS
Gopinath stressed the need to attract private investment to increase the levels of per capita income and to get to continued high levels of growth. In order to enable an environment for private investment, it is imperative that the investment in public infrastructure continues, she added.
The economist said only four Indian states Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Delhi — g e t a l a r g e c h u n k o f f o r e i g n direct investment and added, “A lot has to be done at the level of state Governments.”

NEW DELHI: Saudi Arabia will soon be setting up an office in India’s Gujarat International Finance TecCity (GIFT City) Saudi’s Investment Minister, Khalid bin Abdulaziz AlFalih has said.
“We will send a strong delegation from Saudi to India in the next few weeks to set up an office of ‘sovereign wealth fund’ in GIFT City,” Al-Falih said speaking at the Saudi-India investment forum in New Delhi.
GIFT City is India’s tax-neutral financial services centre and a business district under constr uction in
Gandhinagar district in Gujarat. It is India’s first operational greenfield smart city and international financial services centre, whichtheGovernmentofGujarat promoted as a greenfield project.
India’s trade with Saudi Arabia in 2022-23 amounted to $52 76 billion, with exports at $10 73 billion and imports at $42 04 billion As such, India had a trade deficit of $31.31 billion with Saudi Arabia in the last financial year. O

announcing the setting up of a mechanism to settle global trade in rupees in July 2022. Early use of this system was seemingly for the purchase of discounted oil from sanction-hit Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, the mechanism has not taken off, with reports emerging that negotiations over the settlement of bilateral trade in rupees between India and Russia had been suspended after Russia had accumulated billions of rupees in Indian banks which it could not use.
India imposes Anti-dumping duty on some Chinese steel for 5 years: Govt order
NEW DELHI: The Finance Ministry of India on Monday imposed an anti-dumping duty on some Chinese steel for a period of five years, according to the official gazette of the Ministry
Earlier, on September 4 of this year, India’s steel secretary, Nagendra Nath Sinha, said New Delhi was monitoring the steel imports situation after the steel industry raised concerns over potential dumping by Chinese sellers.
“Evidence of export price indicates that the Chinese exporters are exporting the goods to third countries at significantly dumped and injurious prices,” said the Finance Ministry’s gazette on the reason behind this order of imposing anti-dumping duty
During April-July, China was the second biggest steel exporter to India, after South Korea, selling 0.6 million metric tons, up 62% from the same period
a year earlier. In all, India imported 2 million metric tons of finished steel in the period, the highest since 2020 and up 23%fromayearearlier China, the world’s top steel producer, exported mostly cold- rolled coil or sheets to India.
Indian government has already imposed anti-dumping duty on several products to tackle cheap imports from various countries, including China.

Alliances: Asia-Europe reliability gains
COPENHAGEN: To gauge which of the three carrier alliances recorded the fastest post-pandemic recovery in schedule reliability, we pegged their lowest recorded schedule reliability during the pandemic as month “0” and then looked at the change from th at baseline in the months that followed.
This is shown in Figure 1 for Asia-North Europe. In just the 2nd month after dropping to its lowest point, 2M had improved schedule reliability by 20 percentage points, whereas the improvements for Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance were both under 10 percentage points By the 7th month, 2 M a l m o s t r e a c h e d a r e c o v e r y o f 50 percentage points, with the other two alliances lagging severely behind. Ocean Alliance only got to the 45-percentage point mark by the 17th month, with THE Alliance taking 25 months just to get within a hair of the 50 percentage point mark. In short, the schedule reliability recovery rate for 2M was far above the other two alliances.
In fact, on both Asia-Europe trade lanes, 2M has seen rapid improvements in schedule reliability after dropping to its lowest point during the pandemic, however, while they continued on this trajectory on Asia-North Europe (as previously mentioned),
their rate of recovery on Asia-Mediterranean slowed down considerably Ocean Alliance on the other hand, while having a relatively slower rate of improvement on Asia-North Europe, have largely been consistent in schedule reliability improvements in the months after their lowest figure of the pandemic THE Alliance has seen a relatively slower rate of recovery on Asia-North Europe, picking up in recent months, while seeing the opposite trend on Asia-Mediterranean.

Stanley says China is ‘overinvested,’ but India’s the opposite
SINGAPORE: China is overinvested as its economy continues to get buffeted but India has room for investment opportunities, said Morgan Stanley.
“China is overinvested It’s overleveraged and it’s oversupplied. And then it has this geopolitical cloud over it,” said Jitania Kandhari, Morgan Stanley’s deputy CIO for solutions & multi-asset and managing director
This is in contrast to India, which Kandhari says is underinvested.
“It’s underinvested because investment to GDP was down, and now investment and manufacturing are hopefully picking up with the China-plus-one diversion of trade that is happening there,” Kandhari was quoted by CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia.”
Recently companies have pursued a “China-plus-one” strategy as they diversify their supply chains in a bid for resilience.
Kandhari added that India is undersupplied in terms of homes and property, whereas “China has so many excesses.” China’s real estate sector has been mired in debt and plagued by weak sales New home sales for the top 100 developers sunk by about a third in June and July from a year ago, after double-digit growth earlier in the year, according to S&P Global Ratings.
“India’s beginning a new cycle on the real estate side — made in India, work from India — with the global centers setting up there,” she elaborated. “So India story definitely feels like it has legs.”
