(SCI) signed an MoU on June 3, 2024, here to explore business opportunities for leveraging each other’s infrastructure and experience to offer seamless and cost-effective end-to-end logistics services to customers under a single window

KANDLA : (02836)222665/225790, E-Mail:dstimeskdl@gmail.com

The flagship port Mundra recorded a key milestone of handling 17.6 MMT of cargo in May’24, which is the highest ever monthly volume at any of the Indian ports The port also achieved another milestone of handling over 7 Lac TEUs in a month.

The company said due to shutdown of the Gangavaram Port, APSEZ lost around 6 MMT of cargo volumes in April and May’24. However, with the operations now restarted, the company is confident of recovering these lost volumes in the coming months.

Despite the closure of Gangavaram port, during the initial two months of FY25, APSEZ handled 72 MMT of cargo, implying 5 per cent YoY growth. This increase is primarily driven by containers (+11 per cent YoY) and liquids & gas (+13 per cent). Adani Ports record

Maersk upgrades full-year guidance

COPENHAGEN: On the back of continued strong container market demand and the disruption caused by the ongoing crisis in the Red Sea, A.P Moller - Maersk A/S (Maersk) now also sees signs of further port congestions, especially in Asia and the Middle East, and additional increase in container freight rates. This development is gradually building up and is expected to contribute to a stronger financial performance in the second half of 2024.

Based on this development, Maersk upgrades its 2024 full-year guidance and now expects an underlying EBITDA of USD 7 to 9bn and EBIT of USD 1 to 3bn (previously USD 4 to 6bn and USD -2 to 0bn, respectively), and free cash flow of at least USD 1bn (previously at least USD -2bn).

In the past month, the container transport market has entered a new phase driven by the disruptions from the ongoing crisis in the Red Sea and the ripple effects on global

supply chains. While demand for container transport remains strong, supply has been negatively impacted by missed sailings, longer routes, equipment shortages, and delays leading to increased congestion across several key ports in Asia and the Middle East. This demand and supply imbalance has had an immediate and profound impact on freight rates.

“After a stable first quarter, price increases gained momentum during April and May across many regions. The ongoing threats to commercial vessels in the Red Sea and growing supply chain bottlenecks indicate that this situation won't improve soon. More capacity than expected will be needed to resolve these issues and stabilize the global supply chain. This has led us to reassess the outlook for the remainder of the year and upgrade our financial guidance,” said, Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk.

PSA Singapore Completes First Successful Simultaneous Methanol Bunkering and Cargo Operation at Tuas Port

SINGAPORE: PSA Singapore, together with X-Press Feeders and Global Energy Trading (GET), have successfully completed the first simultaneous methanol bunkering and cargo operation (SIMOPS), at Tuas Port in Singapore on 27 May

The SIMOPS, which was completed within an hour, was conducted with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), together with various government agencies and local research institutions. The use of the mass flow metering (MFM) system for methanol, together with the use of digital bunkering, was also trialled during the SIMOPS. This follows the inaugural ship-tocontainership methanol bunkering for the Laura Maersk in July 2023, and the successful ship-to-ship methanol bunkering of close to 1,340 metric tonnes of blended methanol for the Stena Prosperous on 24 May this year

A X-Press Feeder container vessel travelling from Asia to Europe was successfully refuelled with approximately 300 metric tonnes (MT) of bio-methanol by GET, a MPA-licensed bunker supplier, using MT KARA, a dedicated IMO type II chemical bunker tanker The methanol fuel was supplied simultaneously while completing container moves, which is the preferred mode of operation for container vessels to enhance operational efficiency The cargo operation was carried out with the use of PSA’s double trolley quay cranes and automated guided

vehicles at Tuas Port With these operations, the Port of Singapore is ready for commercial scale operations for shoreto-ship, ship-to-ship, and simultaneous operations for methanol, and the same methodology is being followed for othernewmaritimefuelssuchasammoniaandhydrogen.

Regional CEO Southeast Asia Nelson Quek said, “The successful completion of simultaneous cargo operations and methanol bunkering at PSA Tuas Port stands as a testament to our shared commitment to curb carbon emissions and adopt cleaner alternative fuels PSA strives to strengthen our competitiveness as a leading transhipment hub facilitating global trade by working with like-minded partners to promote green and sustainable development that can help accelerate decarbonisation across the entire maritime value chain ”

Big export push on Top of New Govt agenda

NEW DELHI: The Government is considering setting up a dedicated overseas market development body–IndTrade– and a national branding division to get to the goal of $ 2 trillion in exports by 2030. IndTrade would work for trade promotion and the branding division will work along with the export strategy to promote “Made in India” as a global brand, a senior official said.

At present, there are 14 export

p r o m o t i o n c o u n c i l s u n d e r t h e Department of Commerce which deal with different product groups. Besides, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) functions as an umbrella organsiation of exporters. IndTrade will not seek to replace them but take a lead in “outward looking market development” for all sectors, the source said.

For branding “Made in India” large scale targeted campaigns will be planned. The “Made in India” label

scheme is likely to be announced in the first budget of the incoming government in July, sources said.

While the target is to more than double exports in next six years, for 2047 the export target is $ 8 trillion. To meet such tall targets, plans are underway to strengthen overseas market linkages through trade missions. For exporters further digitisation of trade approvals and regulatory processes are in the pipeline.

The Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are another priority element for export growth The plan is to accelerate bilateral and regional trade agreements with countries and economic blocks that offer high potential for securing and expanding trade markets. Also on the agenda of the Government is to boost trade negotiation capabilities.

A l r e a d y t h e D e p a r t m e n t o f Commerce is working on drawing up a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

for FTA negotiations This SOP will codify all the learnings from FTA negotiations that have been held so far. The activity around FTAs has been intense in the last few years and India changed its focus to the West – where its biggest markets are – for FTAs.

In these negotiations India is pitted against countries and economic blocks with a long history of negotiating and then running economic and monetary unions and trade blocks. From the steel and coal union in 1952 and monetary agreement in 1958 to the European Union.

Logistics corridors are another area where the government sees regional trade opportunities. Earlier this month India signed a 10-year deal to operate and develop Chabahar port in Iran This port will serve as a gateway to Central Asia and Eurasia. India-Middle East-Europe corridor is also on the drawing board.

New Government to inherit strong economy, focus on making India developed

NEW DELHI: India’s world record beating economic growth rate together with robust tax revenues, a fast expanding digital and financial i n f r a s t r u c t u r e , a n d a s t r o n g manufacturing sector, will give the new Government, a base for unleashing next generation reforms that may make the country a developed nation by 2047.

The new Government will however have to tackle with problems like unemployment and rural distress, which seemed to have played a major role in voting pattern in states like Uttar Pradesh, while also keeping inflation under control.

Given that no party, including BJP , have a clear majority of its own, tough reforms like big ticket privatisation and labour law reforms may take a backseat.

The new government will have to build upon the 8.2 per cent GDP growth recorded in 2023-24 and carry on with the reforms to make India a $5 trillion economy in the next couple of years, and a developed nation by 2047.

Policy experts are unanimous in their view that the government is likely to continue its focus on infrastructureled growth, investor-friendly policies, enabling reforms, and facilitating ease of doing business.

Last week, S&P Global Ratings had said that historically, India has been on a high growth path with national consensus on key economic policies.

“No matter who the incoming government is, the pro-growth policies, sustained infrastructure investments, the drive to reduce fiscal deficit — these things have produced very good outcomes and we believe this will continue in the coming years no matter who is in charge,” S&P Global Ratings Analyst, YeeFarn Phua said.

EY India Chief policy advisor,

DK Srivastava said, the Aatmanirbhar strategy, especially focusing on knowledge intensive employment g e n e r a t i n g a n d s t r a t e g i c manufacturing, will serve India well in the long run while providing scope for increasing both services and goods exports.

“The new Government will find a solid foundation of the economy, ready to take off with the objective of fulfilling India’s aim of becoming ‘viksit’ in the next 25 years,” Srivastava said.

Under the Modi government’s 10-year tenure, India has become the fifth largest economy, from 11th globally, shaking off its image as a “fragile” economy, prior to 2014.

The new government, will have its eyes set on taking India among the top t h r e e e c o n o m i e s i n t h e w o r l d The target is “more likely” to be realised by 2027-28 fiscal, according to the 16th Finance Commission Chairman, Arvind Panagariya.

Currently, the size of the Indian economy is $3.7 trillion, and it is expected to become $7 trillion by 2030. RBI has projected a 7 per cent growth rate for the current fiscal.

D e l o i t t e S o u t h A s i a C E O, Romal Shetty said, India is firmly on the growth trajectory as the world’s fastest-growing economy, and a key player in the global supply chain.

“ Wi t h t h e n e w g o v e r n m e n t , we expect second-generation reforms driven by technology to make India a global hub of innovation and a thriving digital economy We must further accelerate reforms to strengthen ease of doing business, boost inbound investment, and solidify India’s position as the top destination for GCCs (global capability centres), and high-tech manufacturing, with a focus

nation by 2047

on jobs,” Shetty said.

In fact, reflecting the buoyant sentiments, S&P Global Ratings last week, upgraded India’s outlook to positive, from stable, and said it could upgrade India’s sovereign rating in the next one to two years, if the government continues reforms, and adheres to the path of fiscal consolidation.

Last week, Moody’s Ratings, also said it expects policy continuity after the general election, and continued focus on infrastructure development.

Nangia Andersen India Chairman, Rakesh Nangia, said the investors’ community expects continued policy reforms, particularly in labour laws and the privatisation of state-owned enterprises.

“Investors are also keen on prudent fiscal management, focusing on reducing the fiscal deficit, while promoting growth through strategic investments This combination of reforms and fiscal discipline, is expected to create a favourable environment for sustained economic growth, and increased investor confidence,” Nangia said.

Nangia further said that investors are also eager to see a further simplification of India’s regulatory framework, more transparent, and predictable policies that can enhance the ease of doing business.

“This regulatory clarity, is crucial for attracting more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and positioning India as a key manufacturing hub, driven by supply chain diversification. In recent years, there has been substantial FDI i n f l o w i n t o s e c t o r s s u c h a s manufacturing, computer services, and renewable energy, reflecting India’s growing appeal as a destination for global investment,” Nangia said.

representative body the World Shipping Council (WSC). “The new regulations, specifically amending SOLAS Chapter V Regulations 31 and 32, mark a significant advancement in maritime safety and environmental protection By ensuring prompt and detailed reporting of lost and drifting containers, these amendments will enhance

navigational safety, facilitate swift response actions, and mitigate potential environmental hazards,” said Lars Kjaer, SVP Safety & Security for WSC. Under regulation 31 the immediate reporting by the Master must include specific details to nearby ships, the nearest coastal state, and the flag State. Major Ports Traffic rises over 3% to 72.04 million tonnes in May

NEW DELHI: Cargo traffic across 12 Major Ports in the country increased by 3.75 percent year-on-year in May to 72.04 million tonnes (MT) from 69.43 MT handled in the corresponding month of 2023 with nine such ports showing positive growth.

Visakhapatnam Port registered the maximum cargo growth in cargo handling at 22.05 percent during the reporting month followed by Chennai Port with 9.10 percent, Cochin Port with 7.78 percent and Mumbai Port with 5.89 percent, according to data released by the major ports’ apex body, Indian Ports Association (IPA).

The 12 major ports are Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Ennore (Kamarajar), Tuticorin (V O Chidambaranar), Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port.

According to the IPA, VO Chidambaranar Port saw a 5.59 percent increase in its cargo handling during the previous month while Paradip Port 4.27 percent, Deendayal Port with 3.49 percent, New Mangalore Port with 1.87 percent and JNPA with 1.78 percent.

The ports, which saw a decline in cargo handling during May this year include SMP , Kolkata Port with 15.70 drop followed by Kamarajar Port and Mormugao Port, which witnessed 3.58 percent and 10.55 decline, as per the IPA

At Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, the overall traffic decreased by 15 70 percent during the previous month, it said, adding Kolkata Dock System (KDS) traffic declined by 7.71 percent and at Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) by 18.32 percent.

IPA attributed the fall in cargo handling traffic at KDS to reduction in coking and other coal by -71.75 percent and finished fertilizers by 43.53 percent, among others.

The Major Ports’ operators body also said that during May 2024, Deendayal Port handled the highest traffic volume at 12.71 MT and commanded a 17.64 percent share of the total cargo handled across 12 ports.

PM Modi plans business-friendly measures, eyes global manufacturing hub status

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi plans a raft of business-friendly measures upon winning the General Election, including pushing through regulations making it easier to hire and fire workers, according to two Government officials familiar with the matter. As part of an election pledge to transform India into a global manufacturing hub, Modi wants to offer subsidies for domestic production modelled on recent packages for semiconductor firms and electric vehicle makers, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to media.

The premier also plans to reduce import taxes on key inputs for locally-made goods, which have pushed up India’s manufacturing costs, the officials said.

Modi’s reelection campaign was partly built on the promise of continued economic development. He’s pitching India as an alternative for global firms diversifying their supply chains from China India is the world’s fastestgrowing major economy But that includes both a booming

tech sector and a struggling older economy that doesn’t provide enough jobs for everyone else, said Josh Felman, the former Head of the International Monetary Fund’s office in India.

“What can be done now to provide employment – good jobs for these people – is manufacturing,” Felman said.

India successfully lured suppliers for major U.S. corporations like Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google. But less than 3% of global manufacturing takes place in the world’s most populous country, compared to 24% for China, World Bank data shows.

The government plans to increase India’s share of global manufacturing to 5% by 2030 and 10% by 2047.

According to Reuters, people – including bureaucrats, representatives of major investors, economists and trade unionists – who identified three significant obstacles holding India back from manufacturing hub status: restrictive labour laws, challenges acquiring land, and a rigidly inefficient tariff regime

Strong growth, lower scal decit may lead to India rating upgrade: Deutsche Bank

MUMBAI: Strong growth and a narrower fiscal deficit can lead to a sovereign rating upgrade for India, a German brokerage said recently The government's commitments on fiscal deficit to 5.1 per cent in FY25 and further down to 4.5 per cent in FY26 "look more credible now", analysts at Deutsche Bank said, pointing out that the number came in at 5.6 per cent in FY24 as against the budgeted 5.8 per cent. Courtesy the higher than expected dividend announcement by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) at Rs 2.1 lakh crore, the fiscal deficit for FY25 can come down to 5 per cent as against the budgeted 5.1 per cent.

On growth, the note said it expects real GDP expansion to come at 6.9 per cent in FY25 and go down further to 6.5 per cent in Fy26. "Strong growth, lower fiscal deficit opens up room for ratings upgrade," the note said.

"A faster-than-anticipated pace of fiscal consolidation could pave the way for a sooner-rather-than-later sovereign rating upgrade for India," the analysts said.

It can be noted that global rating agency S&P had last week revised up the outlook on its sovereign rating for India to "positive" from "stable" earlier

Recently official data suggested that the economy grew at a faster clip of 8.2 per cent in the March quarter, which takes the FY24 real GDP growth to 7.6 per cent.

The note said the Indian economy has exhibited "remarkable resilience" despite higher rates for longer, the Russia-Ukraine war and Covid prior to that, though a strong pickup in real GDP growth during FY24 can be also attributed materially to a very low GDP deflator.

It explained that nominal GDP growth slowed to 9 6 per cent in FY24, from 14 2 per cent in FY23 and 19 per cent in FY22 But in real terms, GDP growth accelerated to 8 2 per cent in FY24 from 7 per cent in FY23, thanks to a collapse in the GDP deflator to 1 4 per cent in FY24 from 7 6 per cent year-on-year in FY23 and 9.4 per cent in FY22.
