India-West Asia-Europe Economic corridor to give ‘fillip’ to Gujarat’s potential: GIIC official

G A N D H I N A G A R : T h e proposed India-Middle EastEurope Economic Corridor will give a “fillip” to Gujarat’s “potential” as an investment hub, said State Government officials, adding that the coastal state is the gateway to the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.

Mr Rahul Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation, exuded confidence over the positive impact of the ambitious corridor, given the strategic position of the state.

He said, “We (Gujarat) have a 1,600-km coastline, the longest in the country

We are strategically located, and given the number of ports along our coastline and the fact that we are almost handling more than 40 per cent of India’s port cargo, Gujarat, even today, is a gateway to not only the Middle East but also Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. So, the kind of project you are referring to,

I believe will give further fillip to the potential that the state has.”

During the G20 Summit last month in New Delhi, India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union announced a Memorandum of Understanding committing to work together to develop a new India-Middle EastEurope Economic Corridor

The Corridor will consist of two separate corridors: the East Corridor connecting India to West Asia and the Middle East, and the Northern Corridor connecting West Asia and the Middle East to Europe.

It will include a rail line, which, upon completion, will provide a reliable and cost-effective crossborder ship-to -rail transit network to supplement the existing multi-modal transport r o u t e s , e n h a n c i n g t h e transhipment of goods and services from South East Asia through India to West Asia and Middle East Europe.

Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the corridor and said it “is going to become the basis of world trade for hundreds of years to come, and history will always remember that this corridor was initiatedonIndiansoil”

To further the growth of the state, t h e G u j a r a t G o v e r n m e n t h a s announced that the 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit will be organised in 2024 January. It is a biennial event The last Vibrant Gujarat summit was organized in 2019. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Government could not go ahead with its plans to organise the summit in 2021.

Adani Ports & SEZ total cargo volumes rise 26% YoY to 32.8 MMT in September

MUMBAI: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) registered a 26 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) growth in September in its total cargo volumes to 32.8 million metric tonnes (MMT) In a press release, the company said that growth was recorded across all cargo segments, including containers (20 per cent), dry bulk (32 per cent), and liquid & gas (21 per cent).

The company's logistics volumes continue to register significant growth with half-yearly rail volumes

of 279,177 TEUs (20 per cent) and general purpose wagon investment s c h e m e ( G P W I S ) v o l u m e s o f 8.92 MMT (42 per cent).

Between April and September, APSEZ handled 202.6 MMT of total cargo, crossing the 200 MMT milestone in the first six months of the year. The company said that this growth is supported by all key ports in the APSEZ portfolio, with container cargo growth of 18 per cent to 74.8 MMT and dry bulk growth of 10 per cent to 106.3 MMT

In August, APSEZ's total cargo volume rose 17 per cent from a year ago to 34 2 MMT Adani Ports has six ports and terminals on the west coast Mundra, Dahej, Tuna, and Hazira in Gujarat; Mormugao in Goa; and Dighi in Maharashtra

The company operates five ports and terminals on the east coast — Dhamra in Odisha; Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh; and Kattupalli and Ennore in Tamil Nadu.

Railways achieves 758.20 MT freight loading in rst two quarters of 2023

NEW DELHI: On cumulative basis from April –September 2023, freight loading of 758 20 MT was achieved against last year loading of 736 68 MT, an improvement of approximate 21.52 MT over last year’s loading for the same period. Railways have earned Rs 81697 crore against Rs 78991 crore over the last year which is an improvement of approx Rs 2706 Crores as compared to the

same period of the last year

During the month of September 2023, originating freight loading of 123.53 MT has been achieved against loading of 115.80 MT in Sept. 2022, which is an improvement of approx 6 67% over the last year Freight revenue of Rs. 12956.95 Crores has been achieved in Sept 2023 against Rs 12332 70 Cr freight earnings in September 2022, thereby showing an

improvement of about 5.06% over the last year.

IR achieved loading of 59.70 MT in Coal, 14.29 MT in Iron Ore, 5.78 MT in Pig Iron and Finished Steel, 6.25 MT in Cement (Excl. Clinker), 4.89 MT in Clinker, 4 54 MT in Foodgrains, 4.23 MT in Fertilizers, 4.0 MT in Mineral Oil, 7.28 MT in Containers and 10.10 MT in Balance Other Goods during September, 2023.

JSW Infra has huge potential to grow its business : Sajjan Jindal

MUMBAI: Commercial ports operator JSW Infrastructure, which got listed on the bourses on Tuesday, said it has a huge potential to grow its business and aims to become a global company, JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal has said.

Speaking at the listing event, Jindal cited the example of Singapore and said that it is a City-State and handles more cargo than all of India. “We can also create such ports which handle not just our own cargo but also of the countries around us,” he said.

“We cannot think only India centric, we have to think global and we have to really build ourselves as a global company So we have to really think at those levels,” he said.

Jindal further said that India has a large coastline and logistics cost in the country is among the highest in the world. “The cost of transporting goods in India is the highest, So JSW Infra has a huge potential to grow its business to create what the government has created, CONCOR,” Jindal said. A Public Sector Undertaking, CONCOR (Container Corporation of India) provides total

logistics solutions for containerised cargo.

The Initial Public Offering (IPO) of JSW Infrastructure was subscribed 37.37 times on the last day of bidding on Wednesday The Rs 2,800-crore IPO had a price range of Rs 113-119 per share. The public issue was entirely a fresh issue of equity shares.

JSW Infrastructure, which became the third public entity within the JSW group after JSW Steel and JSW Energy, is not the last IPO, he said “We have many companies coming up (like) JSW Cement, JSW Paints, JSW One, and hopefully there will be more companies which will get listed in the years to come,” Jindal said.

JSW Infrastructure, a port-related infrastructure company, provides maritime-related services, including cargo handling, storage solutions, logistics services and other value-added services to its customers.

It operates seven port terminals and two ports in India besides two port terminals under operations and maintenance agreements in Fujairah Terminal and Dibba Port in the UAE with a cumulative cargo handling capacity of 41 MTPA as of June 30, 2023.

Eastern-DFC : Electric Loco trial successfully conducted on 94-Km-long last leg of freight corridor

MUMBAI: The Dedicated Freight Cor ridor Corporation (DFCC) has successfully conducted electric locomotive trial on New Khatauli-New Pilakhani section, the last leg of the Eastern dedicated freight corridor (DFC).

The loco trial run on the 94-km-long section of Eastern-DFC was carried out by the Meerut unit and with this, the 1,337-km-long Eastern-DFC witnessed the long awaited completion of the exclusive goods corridor

The successful trial marks the completion of the main line section of the corridor.

“We conducted successful trial of electric loco run on New Khatauli-New Pilkhani Section section. It is the last leg of New Khurja-New Pilkhani section and also missing link of the complete EDFC route from Sonnagar in Bihar to Sahnewal in Punjab,” DFCC maintained.

With this, the entire 1,337 km Eastern-DFC route, from Sonnagar in Bihar to Ludhiana in Punjab, has been completed.

Eastern corridor is meant to cater to a number of traffic streams — coal for the power plants in the northern region of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and parts of Rajasthan — from the eastern coal fields, finished steel,

food grains, cement, fertilisers, lime stone from Rajasthan to steel plants in the east and general goods.

An operations control centre has been built at Prayagraj which, which will monitor the movement of freight movement on the Eastern-DFC. Also known as command and control centre, it will also power supply systems besides goods trains.

The DFC aims to decongest the existing Indian Railways’ network for passenger trains, while at the same time the average speed of goods trains could be increased from existing 25 to 70 kmph.

The Eastern-DFC would run heavy haul trains with higher axle load.

A large logistic hub is also proposed in Meerut, since the city is a suitable major hub due to its well connectivity and proximity with expressways like Delhi Meerut Expressway, Ganga Expressway, Delhi Mumbai Expressway, Yamuna Expressway and Meerut Haridwar Expressway.

The further construction of the 371-km-long Sonnagar to Andal section, would be constructed by the Railways itself, as the national transporter has abandoned its plan for making it in public-private partnership model.

Minister of Law & Justice invites FFFAI to suggest amendments in Laws under ‘Jan Vishwas Bill’

MUMBAI: The 60th Annual General Meeting of the Federation of Freight Forwarders’ Associations in India (FFFA), which was held on September 29, 2023 in Mumbai (coinciding with concluding the Diamond Jubilee celebration year) completed with an encouraging address from Mr. Arjun Ram Meghwal, Hon'ble Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Government of India. On this occasion the Chief Guest, Mr Arjun Ram Meghwal, emphasised on the recently passed Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023 with an objective to facilitate Ease of Living and Ease of Doing Business.

Welcoming the Minister on virtual platform, Mr. Shankar Shinde, the then Chairman FFFAI, stated that FFFAI members consisting of more than 6500 Customs Brokers, Freight Forwarders and Logistics professionals often face challenges due to multiple laws dealing with Participating Government Agencies (PGAs), cross border trade, etc, which need to be revisited/amended to facilitate the trade and Ease of Doing Business. He lauded the present Government’s focus on acting as a facilitator rather than regulator, based on trust or ’vishwas’.

Mr. Shantanu Bhadkamkar, Past Chairman and Board of Advisor, FFFAI highlighted the theme of the special session. He pointed out that this is the first time FFFAI is being engaged with the Ministry of Law & Justice as a stakeholder, which needs to go a long way to make the CB/FF’s lives easy in terms of doing logistics business. He urged the Law & Justice Ministry to provide the logistics industry an opportunity to engage in dialogues regarding certain aspects like Show Cause Notices and quasi-judicial proceedings.

In his speech, Mr Arjun Ram Meghwal also emphasised on the exorbitant logistics cost in India which is a deterrent to compete with the international market as far as selling of Indian products are concerned. He invited FFFAI representation suggesting those legal barriers/laws hindering the smooth logistics operations and increasing logistics costs. “We have to

fulfil the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to reach the target of a $5 trillion economy by 2025 and to be a developed nation by 2047”, the Hon’ble Minister said.

It is pertinent to mention that through the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023, a total of 183 provisions are being proposed to be decriminalized in 42 Central Acts administered by 19 Ministries / Departments. Decriminalization is proposed to be achieved in the following manner: -

(i) Both Imprisonment and/or Fine are proposed to be removed in some provisions.

(ii) Imprisonment is proposed to be removed and fine retained in few provisions.

(iii) Imprisonment is proposed to be removed and Fine enhanced in few provisions.

(iv) Imprisonment and Fine are proposed to be converted to Penalty in some provisions.

(v) Compounding of offences is proposed to be introduced in a few provisions.

For effective implementation of the above, the bill proposes measures such as (a) pragmatic revision of fines and penalties commensurate to the offence committed; (b) establishment of Adjudicating Officers; (c) establishment of Appellate Authorities; and (d) Periodic increase in quantum of fine and penalties. It is also ensured that the degree and nature of punishment is commensurate with the severity of the offence.

The AGM and the hybrid session was attended by all FFFAI Office Bearers, Executive Committee Members and a large number of members from 30 Member Locations across India. Proposing a vote of thanks to the H o n’ b l e M i n i s t e r M r. A r j u n R a m M e g h w a l , Mr. Dushyant Mulani, the then Chairman Elect/now Chairman, FFFAI said the Federation would soon make a presentation to the Ministry of Law & Justice to address the issues pertaining to various laws and quasijudicial matter, so that logistics operation becomes unhindered to achieve the mission of being a developed nation.
