APSEZ handles 420 MMT cargo Globally, Domestic Ports handle over 408 MMT
• APSEZ handled its highest ever monthly cargo volumes of over 38 MMT in March 2024
• Eight ports - 84% of the por olio by volume - delivered double digit growth
• 100% broad cargo types – dry, container and liquid – recorded double digit growth
• Mundra Port alone handled more than 7.4 million TEUs, which is over a third of India’s container carg
Cont’d from Pg. 4
Ten of our ports and terminals handled record cargo volumes: Mundra 180 MMT, Tu n a 1 0 M M T, H a z i r a 2 6 M M T, Mormugao 5 MMT, Karaikal 12 MMT, Ennore 13 MMT, Kattupalli 12 MMT, Krishnapatnam 59 MMT, Gangavaram 37 MMT and Dhamra 43 MMT.
During FY24, more than one-fourth of all India cargo volumes was routed through APSEZ Ports.
This significant contribution by APSEZ underscores its active role in driving India’s growth trajectory It also shows that India’s largest port operator comfortably surpassed its cargo volume guidance of 370 MMT - 390 MMT provided at the start of the financial year
Mr. Karan Adani, Managing Director, APSEZ, said, “While it took 14 years for the company to achieve the first 100 MMT of annual cargo throughput, the second and third 100 MMT throughputs were achieved in 5 years and 3 years. The latest 100 MMT mark has been achieved in less than two years. This is a testament to our ongoing commitment and efforts towards enhancing operational efficiencies and maintaining our position as a top port operator in the industry.”
APSEZ achieved this phenomenal growth by putting customers at the forefront of all its decisions Its approach of strategic partnerships with customers has ensured long-term associations with key stakeholders. Supported by investment in world-class infrastructure that has delivered a high level of operating efficiency and a business model focused on providing an end-to-end solution through last mile connectivity, APSEZ has managed to successfully win customers and improve its market share.
What makes these accomplishments noteworthy is that they were achieved despite multiple challenges, such as the global trade disruptions caused by the Red Sea crisis, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and issues at the Panama Canal, and disruption of operations due to Cyclone Biparjoy and Cyclone Michaung.
This year saw APSEZ achieving various new operational milestones. Its flagship port Mundra became the first in India to handle 16 MMT cargo in a single month (October 2023) Its container terminal CT-3 achieved a milestone of becoming the first in India to handle 3 million TEUs during the year and around 3 lakh TEUs in a single month (November 2023). It berthed the largest-ever vessel at any Indian port (around 399 m-long and 54 m-wide) and handled the highest number of TEUs (16,569) on a single ship, MV MSC Livorno, surpassing the national best of 16,400 TEUs. It handled over 4,300 vessels, crossing its previous record of 3,938 vessels.
In the container segment, the ports at Mundra, Hazira, Kattupalli and Ennore handled record volumes. Around 44% of the containerised seaborne cargo in India moves through APSEZ ports.
Its container volumes have grown by 2X of India’s container growth (~11% as compared to the all-India growth of ~5%) in the last 5 years. Mundra port handled record container volumes by rail of 1.9 MTEUs, a growth of 12% over last year Till February 2024, the double stack coefficient was 59% as compared to last year’s 54%.
In the dry cargo segment, ports such as Tuna, Mormugao, Karaikal, Krishnapatnam, Gangavaram and Dhamra handled record volumes this financial year Dhamra berthed its first LNG-powered cape-sized vessel, MV Ubuntu Unity, while Krishnapatnam berthed its largestevervesselwithdimensionsofLOA335.9mandbeam42.9m. With regard to liquid cargo, Mundra, Kattupalli, Krishnapatnam and Dhamra handled record volumes.

India working on alternative logistic corridors linking India with the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean : S Jaishankar
AHMEDABAD: Union Minister o f E x t e r n a l A f f a i r s ( M E A ) Shri S Jaishankar while addressing b u s i n e s s m e n a n d t r a d e r s a t Ahmedabad recently, said “India was working on alternative logistic corridors that will link the Pacific with the Atlantic Ocean. The shipping lines passing through the Suez Canal are in danger. They are in danger because of drone and missile attacks and Somalian pirate attacks. We have sent 21 Naval vessels to the region. For a large economy like us, it is not enough to have one or two connectivity corridors,” while speaking on the topic of “International Policy:
A catalyst to Viksit Bharat”. ‘Exploring new corridor’
Last year, we decided to make an alternative connectivity corridor that s t a r t s f r o m t h e G u j a r a t a n d Maharashtra coasts and passes through UAE, Saudi Arabia, the Mediterranean Sea and Europe. This will ensure we are not too dependent on the Suez Canal. The entire world is thinking about reducing risks. So we will have to look for connectivity partners Similarly, we are also working on another corridor that links Chabahar port (in Iran) with Russia. We are also exploring a new corridor that will open up due to the melting
Vizhinjam Port will be operational
THIRUVANANTHA
PURAM: Adani Group stated that Vizhinjam I n t e r n a t i o n a l Po r t Project will become operational by Onam, in spite of so much protests and controversies. A trial run of port operations will begin in May using large barges loaded with containers.
Meanwhile, Adani has started d i s c u s s i o n s o n c o m m e r c i a l transactions with international shipping companies P radeep Jayaraman, who took over as the new CEO of the port, said the project can be completed as an Onam gift to them.
The breakwater of the harbour has a total length of 2959 metres, out of
polar ice caps and link Valvadistock, Russia and Europe,” the minister said.
Jaishankar said towards the East, India is looking to build a highway that will link Manipur in India with Vietnam “If we are successful in this, India will be at the centre of a corridor extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific,” he added. The minister said apart from logistic partners, India will also need to look for technology partners, investment partners and the brand itself for a global audience “Foreign Policy can be very useful for the business community,” he added

Red sea crisis : Gujarat exporters turn to costly aerial routes
AHMEDABAD: Over the past few months, global trade has been severely affected, primarily due to the disruption in one of the critical shipping routes through the Red Sea According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), attacks on vessels in the Red Sea region have reduced traffic through the Suez Canal through which about 15% of the global maritime trade volume passes.
The Suez Canal is the shortest maritime route between Asia and Europe and, therefore, the disruption has had a critical effect on exports from India, particularly from Gujarat, a manufacturing-heavy state.
Amid worries about delayed shipments because of the brewing Red Sea crisis, exporters were compelled to turn to air cargo despite higher costs. The crisis had a greater impact on exports of food products, textile, phar maceuticals, and engineering goods.
Meeting the demands of buyers during Ramzan and Easter seasons has become a challenge for exporters, amid higher turnaround time.
Manufacturers of perishable goods, such as pharmaceuticals, have diverted shipments to air cargo. About 50% of the country's pharma industry revenues come from exports to the US and Europe. As almost twothirds of Indian pharma exports take place through the sea route, costs are a key concern for pharma majors here Non-perishable cargos like textile, auto parts and electronics, which are in demand due to the festive season in the Middle East and Europe, are also taking the air route.
Samir Mankad, the Director of GSEC Aviation, which handles the Ahmedabad Air Cargo Complex (AACC), was quoted as saying that, "In Oct 2023, the average daily air cargo volume stood at 80 metric tonnes (MT) at the Ahmedabad Air Cargo Complex. On a busy day, the unit used to handle about 100 MT Today, it handles 200 MT every day." A Mumbai- based logistics company is facing a similar issue. Mahesh Fogla, the Executive Director of the company, said, "Typically, we handle 600 MT air cargo every month for exports to East Africa, Kuwait, Saudi
Arabia, Dubai, and Muscat, among others. This has in- creased to 900 MT a month. Amid higher demand, air freight costs have also increased. For instance, an airline bound for Sudan used to charge Rs 320 per kg for garments. It now charges Rs 460. Air freight costs have gone up for all destinations." Mankad attributes the rise in cargo volumes to the in operational Gujarat Agro-run cargo terminal, the closing of the fiscal year, and the Red Sea crisis.
"Across commodities, including pharma, textile, agriculture and medical devices, the cargo terminal has witnessed an increase of 35% in volumes, which have been diverted from the sea route to the air route. Exporters are taking a hit because air cargo freight costs have also increased over the past three to five months,"Mankad said.
According to Airline Freight Forwarders, the crisis has led to an increase in the cost of sea freight also because of a 15- 20% rise in insurance premiums. Freight forwarders said that warehouses are chock-a-block with cargo piling up in warehouses.
"Just the trailer.." PM Modi heaps praises on the RBI
for transforming India in the last 10 years
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India has played an appreciation-worthy role in the transformation of India's banking system and the economy in the last ten years, Prime Minister Modi said while speaking at the central bank's 90th anniversary event in Mumbai on Monday, 1st April 2024.
"When I attended RBI's 80th birthday in 2014, the situation was completely different," said Modi
pointing to India's twin balancesheet crisis, banking turmoil.
"India's banking sector was troubled with challenges and problems, be it NPA, stability of the system and its future, everyone was filled with doubts. The situation was so bad that the PSBs weren't able to give Indian economy the required push," Modi reminisced.
However, he said, today the situation has evolved for the better.
"The banking system which was on the verge of going bust, is today seeing profits and is setting records when it comes to providing credit. A change like this is just 10 years was not easy it happened because our policies, intentions and decisions were clear," Modi said.
Going ahead, the RBI must think differently, Modi said "Shaktikanta Das is an expert in this regard," the PM said.
India-EEU officials hold talks for FTA negotiations: Report
NEW DELHI : To boost economic ties between India and the five-nation Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) bloc, senior officials from both the sides held detailed talks in March to formally start negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA), said a report by PTI.
The five members of the EEU are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.
“Senior officers of both sides have met on March 28 here and have discussed formally starting talks for the FTA,” PTI quoted an official.
Two feasibility studies have already been conducted on the
proposed agreement, said the report citing the official.
In such FTAs, two or more trading p a r t n e r s e i t h e r r e m o v e o r significantly cut customs duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them These free trade pacts provide greater market access to Indian goods and services.
Indian exporters from sectors s u c h a s e n g i n e e r i n g g o o d s , electronics and agriculture may get an edge from the India-EEU FTA.
In the EEU bloc, Russia is India’s top trading partner with a bilateral trade worth USD 49.4 billion in fiscal year 2023 (FY23).
India’s exports to Russia stood at USD 3 14 billion in 2022-23, while imports were at USD 46.2 billion due to an increase in crude oil
imports
The bilateral trade with Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan was at USD 134.26 million, USD 111.81 million, USD 641.62 million, and USD 56 56 million, respectively, in fiscal year 2022-23.
A similar free trade agreement was signed by India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) The members of this bloc are Iceland, L i e c h t e n s t e i n , N o r w a y, a n d Switzerland.

Logistics sector to grow in Medium term, Global headwinds to impact margins in FY24
MUMBAI: Growth in the logistics sector during F Y 2 4 w a s d r i v e n b y increased mobility amidst s t a b l e d o m e s t i c consumption and buoyant investment demand.
Improved e-commerce s a l e s , g o v e r n m e n t ’ s thrust on infrastructure projects, and expansion of the rural market provided a fillip to the demand for road logistics.
However, high inflation, rising interest rates, and an uncertain global demand scenario impacted domestic demand partly. Owing to their strong linkage to economic activity they acted as headwinds. The operator’s ability to complete the pass-through of operating costs was also affected amid stiff competition, according to industry experts.
Suprio Banerjee, Vice President and Sector Head – Corporate Ratings, ICRA Limited, said, “Due to normalisation of businesses postcovid, and sticky retail diesel prices (though brent crude is down from highs of 2023), companies are unable to raise rates automatically linked to diesel rates, which has impacted the margins for the players in FY2024, since other costs have gone up Cost rationalization measures undertaken have gradually come back to normal, which has resulted in lower margins forthesector”
Over the medium term, he is certain that the logistics sector growth would continue to be driven by demand from varied segments including ecommerce, FMCG, retail, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and industrial goods, coupled with an industry paradigm shift towards organized logistics players, post GST, and e-way bill implementation. Role of technology
Technologies can help optimize r o u t e s , v e h i c l e l o a d i n g , a n d s c h e d u l i n g , r e d u c i n g f u e l consumption and delivery times thereby enabling the logistics players to maximize efficiency and respond quickly to the market.
Artificial intelligence (AI) can predict demand patterns, allowing companies to adjust inventory levels and distribution strategies by analyzing historical data and realtime information. It can also monitor and manage the entire supply chain by identifying bottlenecks, mitigating r i s k s , a n d e n s u r i n g s m o o t h operations from procurement to
delivery. Robotics and autonomous vehicles are also streamlining warehouse operations, order picking, and transportation, reducing labor costs and human errors.
“AI-driven optimization, IoTenabled tracking, and blockchainbased transparency can help reduce costs and optimize the operations,” V a r u n G a d a , D i r e c t o r , LP Logiscience, was quoted as saying recently
Government policies
The government policies like PM Gati Shakti and National Logistics Policy (NLP) are aimed at improving the transportation sector’s overall efficiency by integrating road, rail, and sea networks. The Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) project also targets to increase the saturation of I n d i a ’ s r a i l w a y n e t w o r k a n d congestion on its road network while keeping pace with its growing freight requirement The policy aims to reduce the logistics costs from the current 12%-14% of the GDP to less than 10%.
The industry suggests that other initiatives like Universal Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) , and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) have the potential to boost trade within and outside the country. Road ahead

Industry leaders suggest that skill development and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are also crucial for the growth of the sector.
ICRA noted that one of the major challenges is the development of infrastructure in India, with an investment in roads, ports, railways, and airports to improve connectivity A well-defined regulatory framework

While efforts have been made to p r o m o t e i n t e r m o d a l f r e i g h t transportation, there are still challenges related to coordination between different modes of transport and regulatory inconsistencies
Policy interventions to facilitate seamless intermodal connectivity
w o u l d e n h a n c e e f f i c i e n c y and reduce logistics costs, Gada of LP Logiscience said.
While there is a push for green logistics initiatives, compliance with environmental regulations and adoption of sustainable practices can p o s e c h a l l e n g e s f o r l o g i s t i c s companies, particularly smaller players Clear guidelines and i n c e n t i v e s f o r a d o p t i n g environmentally friendly practices w o u l d s u p p o r t i n d u s t r y - w i d e sustainability efforts.
Talking on similar lines, Anand Mimani, CEO, GreenLine Mobility Solutions, was quoted as suggesting t o f o s t e r p u b l i c - p r i v a t e partnerships for infrastructure development projects can help bridge funding gaps and accelerate progress.
“The sector faces challenges related to supply-demand dynamics, fluctuating interest rates, and the difficulty in passing on increased costs to customers To effectively navigate these challenges, logistics operators need to closely monitor market dynamics and adjust pricing strategies to offset rising input costs, thereby maintaining profitability and competitiveness in the industry,” he added.
Addressing these regulatory challenges and implementing appropriate policy interventions will be crucial for unlocking the full potential of the Indian logistics sector and supporting the countr y ’s e c o n o m i c g r o w t h a n d competitiveness.

Sanjay Nayar takes charge as ASSOCHAM President
NEW DELHI: Mr Sanjay Nayar, the former KKR India Chief Executive, a well-known name in the global financial markets, has assumed charge as President of Industry Chamber Assocham.
He has replaced Ajay Singh, Co-Founder of low-cost airline SpiceJet, who has completed his tenure at the apex industry chamber
N a y a r, w h o i s n o w Fo u n d e r a n d C h a i r m a n , Sorin Investment Fund, brings with him an experience of four decades in global financial and capital markets, including 25 years at Citi and nearly 14 at KKR, before retiring last year He had established KKR India operations in 2009 after leaving Citigroup.
“During my Presidency, my Assocham colleagues and I will work closely with the government for India to become a developed nation with a multi-fold increase in the country’s
per capita income and continuation of bold economic growth. I look forward to supporting the efforts being made by the industry to achieve t h e c o u n t r y ’ s sustainability goals,” Nayar said.
“India remains a bright spot in the global economy and we must leverage this position further. Given the recent success of Startup Mahakumbh led by Assocham, I look forward to catalyzing the startup culture backed by private and public savings”
Overall exports for FY24 expected to be $440-445 billion : FIEO
NEW DELHI: The last-quarter spurt would see India’s merchandise exports to be around $445 billion in the financial year 2023-24, about 1.3% lower than previous year’s level of $451 billion. The new year is challenging and growth from hereon will depend on inflation-interest rate dynamics in the key markets of the US and Europe, trade experts said,
“The merchandise exports in March are expected to be around $ 40 billion, as $ 5-6 billion will be added to the monthly shipments number. This should take the overall exports for this year to $440-445 billion,” Director General and Chief Executive Ofcer of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Ajay Sahai said.
Before exports started looking up from October 2023 onwards, there was a 9% year-on-year decline in AprilSeptember
Services exports are up 6.7% on year till February to $314.8 billion. They are expected to end the year at around $345 billion. For 2023-24 overall exports are expected to touch $ 790 billion, up from $ 777.6 billion last year
The decline of 1.3% in merchandise exports compares well with the 5% decline in world trade in goods in 2023 estimated by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
TherevivalinperformanceofgoodexportssinceDecember and 12% growth in February coupled with steady growth in services exports would keep the overall exports of the country inthepositivezoneinthefinancialyearendingMarch31
The next year appears challenging as there has been no let up in geopolitical frictions like the crisis in the Red Sea
and Ukraine war that are directly impacting trade flows. The Red Sea crisis that has seen direct attacks on merchant shipping has indeed its sixth month while the Ukraine war has completed two years.
The Red Sea crisis has impacted freight rates and duration of voyages. So far buyers have adjusted to higher costs but still the impact could come on commodities trade, Sahai said.
The freight cost of commodities trade is much higher and margins are not enough to absorb any big fluctuations. The impact of the Red Sea may still come on commodities which may see trade shifting to geographies other than Asia, Northwest Africa and Europe that have been impacted most, he added.
The Indian government is monitoring the situation arising out of the Red Sea and other geopolitical disruptions through a high-level inter-ministerial group of officials. As of now there is nothing much that can be done by the government on the Red Sea situation.
“How inflation in the key market behaves and whether rate cuts would follow If that (rate cuts) happen it would have a much more positive impact on exports in the coming year,: Sahai said.
In his remarks, US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell indicated that interest rates would come down in 2024 but not before more confirmation comes on decline in inflation. This means the cuts will be in the later part of the year Some expect the European Central Bank (ECB) to lead with the cuts, which can come as soon as June.
Red Sea crisis end to reignite Container Shipping challenges
LONDON: Clarksons’ latest container shipping report said that weak “underlying” supply-demand fundamentals willmaterialiseoncetheRedSeadisruptioncomestoanend Boxship fleet growth is estimated at 9% this year, outpacing demand growth of approximately 4%.
In the second half of 2024, assuming that the Red Sea crisis has been resolved, the challenges seen after the Covid-19-fuelled boom could rear their head again.
Clarksons said, “The situation is fluid, but at present a resolution seems unlikely in the short-term, and disruption would likely some time to unwind should the situation ease; our current ‘base case’ forecast basis 1H 2024 of disruption would lead to around 6% uplift in full year 2024 TEU-mile trade). Clearly this ‘boost’ will be focused in 1H in this scenario and demand trends would be expected to ‘normalise’ once disruption ends, though a longer period of rerouting would have a greater impact.”
The world’s largest shipbroker noted that to manage the
tonnage shortage due to the longer voyage times round the Cape of Good Hope, operators have been running vessels at higher speeds. Operating speeds averaged 14 knots in late March, up 1% from the 2023 average.
In February, 18 container ships of 145,000 TEUs were delivered, bringing year-to-date deliveries to 67 units of 449,000 TEU, a record for deliveries in capacity terms. Deliveries in 2024 are currently projected to reach 2.7 million TEUs, an all-time record, while a further 2 million TEUs is scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026 – both double the 2019-2022 average.
Should the Red Sea crisis fade away, 2025 will be a challenging year, as the fleet is expected to grow by more than 5%, despite more potential for vessel demolitions.
However, stricter environmental regulations mean that operators will have to resume slow-steaming once Suez Canal crossings resume. The supply-demand gap could also be narrowed as demand growth is forecast at 3% in 2025.
