First, I want to address my mistake in the last volume, which was actually three, not two. So apoloconfusion. I can’t count that well, apparently.

It’s really encouraging to see all the officers try their hardest amidst this pandemic, especially the editors who have to deal with my constant nitpicking. But it makes my job and your job easier! Our division is growing at a steady pace and I can barely fathom how much we have achieved already. I hope to showcase this growth even a little bit with our newsletters. I know it’ll get rough in the upcoming months, but I believe we can pull through. And, fellow seniors, good luck on those apps! Don’t procrastinate on them too much! With that, I hope you’ll enjoy this August newsletter as we have a very strawberry dolphin-themed newsleten your day just a bit! I hope everyone stays safe,

What’s Splashin’ Dolphins!

The first Quarter of the 2020-2021 term officially ended on July 10th and as of then we accomplished $999.19 in funds raised for service and 2,374 hours served. Division 11 has been brought to a brand new light with Club Visitations, core calls, high DCM attendance, high membership interest, just to name a few of our accomplishments. I know quarantine has been an extremely peculiar time, but we hit the ground running and that means the world to me, you’ve shown your relentless passion to give back to our community in hard times. With that being said, I am wishing you and your families to be in good health, I mean it when I say we’re in this together as one. But first you need to remember to do your part! Please wear a mask, I cannot stress this enough, that one simple action can change the direction of the life we’re currently living for the better. It’s not worth it to face the repercussions and make others face the consequences of your mistake, please stay safe!

Sending love,

Kayla Benoza

CHARITY MILES For the month of June, the division chose to do a competition on the app Charity Miles as a service project. March of Dimes is a non-profit organization that works towards reducing infant deaths and preventing birth defects through education, advocacy, and research aimed at prenatal health, genetics, and birth defects. Our job was to stay active during this project and aim at tracking as many miles as we possibly can through the Charity Miles app. This could have been performed by walk-

key clubs in division 11, Morse was able to have 36 members participate and collectively accomplish 1,467.10 miles winning Morse Key Club 1000 Splashy Points. Our top-mile earner, Alan Cruz, earned approximately 300 miles! Alan commented, “I am proud to know that my actions will help a wonderful cause, but I am even prouder of my club, along with all the other clubs, for being able to achieve thousands of miles as a team.”

Alexis replied by saying that overall, she “enjoyed the Charity Miles Competition because, despite the quarantine, we were able to participate in an event raising funds towards charity. It was something everyone could easily do at home that also kept us up, motivated, and active!”

It was also very delightful to be getting out of the house and moving around while knowing that by doing so, I was helping to raise money for the March of Dimes non profit organization. While taking part in this event, we continue to acquire the funds that are necessary to contribute to research for the health of mothers and babies all across the country. This event helps its participants, the members of division 11 key club, be active in a not only fun, but helpful way.

THANK YOU ! I had decided to participate in the division wide competition on the charity miles. In total I had walked 46.63 miles. This has been extremely beneficial not only to my health but also to the environment. Not only had I been able to walk around my neighborhood which helped me become more active but I had also been able to reduce my carbon footprint by walking places instead of taking a car. I had done this on multiple occasions as I walked to the closest

Starbucks or while I walked my dog around the block. I wish I would have been able to do more than 46 miles but sadly I had much to do homework wise so I couldn’t go on my daily walk as I had to complete assignments. Even though the competition had ended I still plan on using the app to track my miles.

Jay leaving the house to go on a Charity Miles run on a hot summer day. For this month service events I chose to do the charity miles. I chose it because I felt like it was a very effective way to help out an organization in need. It is an app where you cardio and it’ll donate money to an organization. You can walk, run, jog, bike anything that keeps you moving and can even be inside your house. I did it for March of Dimes which is an organization where it’ll donate money to help the health of babies and mothers in need.

Ivan Mendoza’s Charity Miles activity. I took part in the Charity miles service event, in which I was able to help donate money to a charity of my choice by simply walking or running. For every mile you walk or run $0.25 is donated to my charity: March of Dimes. After about two weeks of joining this project I was able to walk about 28.66 miles. With an average mile time of 17 minutes, this converts to a little bit over 8 hours of community service hours. This app not only made me get up and continue being active, but it pushed me to begin running again. Several times out of the week I had the motivation to run, and this was simply due to the fact that me doing so was benefiting others. I am so glad that apps like these are

Through the app charity miles I’ve run and walked miles. I’ve gone out to walk my dog outside for over a week. I‘ve also ran with or without my dog too. Moreover, I am improving my health within this service event. In addition, I’m also raising my team’s total amount of miles done. All in all, this service is completed by me being active.

EXCEPTIONAL CARE

for children

While partaking in the Exceptional Care for Children service event, I was able to be creative and brainstorm many ideas. It was really enjoyable to create many different forms of art, and even letters to share with young children. I’m glad that the SDSCPA Key Club dedicated some of their time to giving the youth something to look forward to and be excited about. The wide variety of projects that we were able to submit made it easier for everyone to find something to contribute to the children. As a creative and performing art school, I am sure that we are all having fun with this event because not only are we able to fabricate our own, unique art, we are also able to share it with an

MT. HELIX CLEANUP Key Club member Damian To is hard at work cutting down plants during our Mt. Helix service event.

For our service, we were asked to pull weeds and invasive plant species that were clogging up the trails at Mt. Helix. We spent a few hours trimming plants, pulling out weeds, and sorting the debris into trash bags. It was a hot afternoon, but all the Key clubbers we had participate were diligent in their work. I think that this service event proved that even in the

midst of a pandemic, we can still come together to serve our community safely, and are able to uphold the Key Club morals. All in all, we had a successful return to in-person service events, and hope to continue work into the school year.

As restrictions have eased, and life is slowly but surely returning to normal, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to do an in-person service project. Our service coordinators connected with the director at Mt. Helix park, so we could do a cleanup project. Safety was of the utmost importance to us, so we made sure to keep our distance, and wore masks and gloves to stay safe. MDCHS members Itzel Esparza and Maria Reyes trim weeds and gather cut plants to be bagged and repurposed for other uses.

SDSCPA MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Audrey Samaniego C/O ‘22

“Our chosen July member of the month is Audrey Samaniego. In the past month she’s been very active in our club, participating in most of our events and making sure to reach out whenever she has a question. Because of her consistent work and effort, we have chosen her as our member of the month.“

Dianne Natanauan & Arvilyn Ticano, Vice Presidents

EASTLAKE MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Colby Hughes C/O ‘22

“Colby Hughes is this month’s top member for his outstanding performance during the charity miles event. The charity miles event consisted of running, walking, or biking miles in order to raise funds for the march of dimes foundation. During this event, Colby biked an outstanding 74 miles to support the cause of March of Dimes. MORSE MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Alan Cruz C/O ‘21

“For the month of June, my club’s member of the month is Alan Cruz. Alan is an upcoming senior who recently showed interest in Key Club last school year and he has been actively participating during meetings and service events as well as keeping communication between members and officers. For the Division Wide Service Project, the Charity Miles Competition, Alan has managed to gain 100+ miles for the Morse Team. With this, we have managed to climb up to number one on the leaderboard!”

Arriana Bascos, President

SWEETWATER MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Erien Ferrer

C/O ‘23

“I believe Erien deserves recognition for her involvement and commitment to key club. She is a new member but is already putting time into the club. In Free Rice she completed 10+ hours with a whole 226,600 grains of rice alone! She attends the meetings when scheduled and is active when new information is released. She asks questions when she needs help. I see a new member who wants to be here and I want to nurture her into a successful member. Therefore, Erien deserves recognition for her commitment to Key Club for recently joining!”

Raffi Flores, President

Congratulations! Thank you all for your dedication and hard work
