Officer Training Conference

Penpal Program

For those of you that do not know what Officer Training Conference is where new Club Officers & members learn about necessary leadership skills and training for the term. Workshops are provided to cover all necessary skills to be a successful leader. This can be compared to high school conferences like AB Samahan or KP. This year’s theme for Officer Training Conference is SanriOTC and it’ll take place on Friday, July 31st and Saturday, August 1st from 12pm-3pm. This OTC is very special because we will have a virtual talent show! You have the opportunity to show a video of you or a group, singing, dancing, performing a spoken word poem, etc. for Region 1. If you are interested in showcasing your talents please refer to the Division Instagram for further detail and instruction. I hope to see many of you Dolphins there! Officers, this is MANDATORY, but this is open to general member attendance to learn about leadership skills like communication, task delegation, etc.

The Region 1.5 Lieutenant Governors were so ecstatic to see that so many Key Clubbers signed up for a pen pal, we had an overwhelming 232 responses so be on the lookout for an email that’ll reveal your pen pal. I truly hope some genuine friendships are built so be sure to complete those challenges we give you, I know it can be hard to open up to someone new sometimes, but I believe in you, if you had the courage to sign up then you most definitely have the courage to introduce yourself. Exchange social media with each other, play Minecraft, surprise each other with a boba delivery, the possibilities are endless here.

Division wide service project

The Charity Miles Competition is about to end so if you haven’t participated for your club, be sure to get out there and raise money for March of Dimes. This is one of the easiest and most rewarding projects we have put out there because not only are you saving lives, you’re also building a healthier version of yourself! I am inspired by some of you Key Clubbers biking 5, 16, 21 miles a day. At this rate so many of you are set to be recognized by the CNH District at DCON 2021, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of this project. This is another reminder that the member of each club with the most miles will be recognized by the Division and the club with the most miles will be recognized as well while earning 1000 Splashy Points.

a letter from the editor Dear Dolphins,

This is my very first newsletter of the 20-21 term and I am excited to create even more memories with you all through our newsletter. I hope you all noticed an upgrade from last term. I definately have! The amount of submissions we recieved during June was more than double we ever recieved last term. Thank you for all the editors who turned in their articles in visuals! A lot of you are new, so I hope I can teach and help you as much as possible. Our Division has grown so much in the past couple of months despite our circumstances, and I’m very grateful that so many people are still interested in serving during this time of hardship. Make sure to say you thanks to our lovely Kayla as well! She’s been so amazing and I’m glad to be working with her and the rest of DLT. I hope you enjoy this issue of the Dolphin Digest-Sunflower themed for July! I still hope to improve in the meanwhile :)

a letter from your ltg What’s splashin’ my lovely Dolphin family! I just wanted to say how incredibly proud I am of you all, I know I’ve said this countless times, but I truly mean it. Serving as your Lieutenant Governor has given me an insurmountable amount of joy over these 2 months, Conclave feels just like yesterday. Since then we have done 3 Division Wide Service Projects from the comfort of our homes and attracting new members while doing so, it warms my heart to see you guys give back to the community even through this uncertain time, you are our future changing the world for the better of it all. Key Club has been the blessing I never knew I needed, I’ve found a community of students like myself who are passionate, hardworking, and kind. Thank you for everything! P.S. I wanted to address in this letter that my name isn’t Kayla Flor :(

Serving with love always,

Kayla Benoza

BUTTERFLIES OF HOPE With all that’s gone on and all the stuff seniors sadly had to miss out on, I’m glad we did this project because it gave us an opportunity to give them something special.

Jay Schmidt, Editor, Hilltop Key Club

T

This project, Butterflies of Hope, gave me a chance to express my creativity and show my appreciation for one of my good friends/mentors. I used an old container I had that was filled with fake crystals to create a Halo Reach themed jar for a senior I know that actually gifted me the game so we could play it together, I printed and cut images in different colors and hand-painted the lid with the game’s logo using acrylic paints. I also wrote a note telling him how much he means to me and the team we’re on together & how much I’m going to miss him when he graduates.

Thank You

for participating

“The eliMAYnate service week was a great way to stay connected with key club while stuck in quarantine. Everyday there was a new service event to participate in and it was an easy way to serve our community from our own home. On Tuesday because of the social media service event, there were many posts about PTP and how to stay safe during this pandemic. It was very informative and helped spread awareness. My favorite event that I participated in was sending thank you emails to our school staff. All our teachers have had to adapt to distant learning in a short amount of time, and being able to let them know

how much I appreciate them made me feel really good. To finish off the service week there was the color a smile event. It was very simple and fun to print out photos and bring them to life using crayons and markers. Even in quarantine there are still many fun service opportunities to join, so we can continue helping and spreading love around our community.”

Jenna Ramiscal, Treasurer, SDCPA Key Club “The service project I participated in was the informational post on Instagram. I know there was a lot of information that I could have posted but I decided to post 3 different ways for kids to stay healthy. The first way for kids to stay healthy was for them to wash their hands and I put different situations they would have to wash their hands after. The second way was for the kids to drink lots of water after they exercised so that they don’t get dehydrated. The last way for kids to stay healthy was to cover their mouth when they are sneezing or coughing. These were what my post was about and I wish I would have put more but I

didn’t.”

Amanda Pedroza, President, Hilltop Key Club

“For this service activity, I sent personal messages to 3 of my teachers to show them my gratitude and appreciation. I recorded myself reading two of the messages I wrote so the teachers could get to hear my voice and see my genuine reactions, but I extended the message I wrote to my English teacher to a multi-page epistle (letter) since I knew how much she enjoyed that format. I poured my heart out in these projects because I know how hard my teachers work and how lucky I am to have teachers that genuinely care about me and value what I have to say.”

Jay Schmidt, Editor, Hilltop Key Club

“In this service event, I made a post on social media informing how two organizations funded over $110,000,000. This money goes to maternal and neonatal tetanus which is a very deadly disease. About 31,000 newborns die from this disease and women as well. It is very important to raise awareness to people that innocent people are dying and that they all have the power to pitch in and help. It’d be grateful and such a helping hand to do this. Because one we are helping each other and two we are giving love to the world.” “The service event project was to color and draw joyful drawings to send in to military personnel and senior citizens. It is very important to let them know that everyone will turn out ok and they have been doing the best work they can staying at home and working on base to serve our country. These cheerful drawings will make sure these folks get a smile on their face. If they are happy, we will all be happy. This event was sponsored by a non-profit organization called Color a smile. Their goal is to bring positivity around the world by sharing beautiful works of art from people and kids like me. I hope that my drawings will help make someone smile and maybe even change the world...eventually.” “I emailed 5 of my teachers and my counselor and showed them my appreciation for them. I told them how I was thankful to have had them as my teachers. They not only do a lot of work for us but they have been there through rough times. And I think that it really shows love to the faculty because they have done so much work for us. And we need to appreciate it and not take it for granted, so it was a great way to give back to what they give us.”

HILLTOP MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Vivianna Valdez

C/O ‘21

“As president I have been struggling with board members dropping out or not fulfilling their duties as a board member. In this time Vivianna had applied to be the club editor and run the social media. In the time that she’s been an officer she has been placed in different positions as I needed to move or replace people. She was able to be flexible and volunteered to change positions. She is also a new member so she took a leap of faith when she applied to be an officer and she had been a life saver many times. She also volunteers to do the work of other officers if they cannot and she gives everything her 110% when she works on a service project or during meetings. When she cannot attend meetings she is the first to notify me and she doesn’t have me go searching for her. She takes every opportunity she has to learn and be available to help the club. An example of this is when she asked if she could still attend the secretary meeting even though she’s Treasurer so that she can help with the MRF form when the secretary and I are busy. She has been an excellent example of a key club member since she has also been able to bring in new members and offer ideas when it comes to fundraisers and Instagram posts. I might be biased but she has to be the best board member I’ve ever had.”

Amanda Pedroza, President

SAINT AUGUSTINE MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Nalu Coons

C/O ‘22

“Nalu is new to Key Club, and since he has joined he has proved time and time again how capable and up to the challenge he is. While he’s quiet on the outside, he is always eager to participate and take on new responsibility, going out for the role of secretary only weeks after joining. He is always trying to learn anything extra he can do better as a secretary and as a member of Key Club, and he is very concerned with service. Honestly, his performance and initiative thus far have really surprised me, and I think he definitely deserves recognition for his hard work and energy, especially being in a club setting in which we are still trying to get back out our feet.”

SDSCPA MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Kristin Ebuengan C/O ‘21

“Our chosen May member of the month is Kristin Ebuegan. Although we’ve had only a few service opportunities--creating thank you cards for front liners in the current situation and the EliMAYnate project--she participated in both of them and completed as many activities as possible. She was also present at both of our club Zoom meetings and through Google form responses, has expressed her willingness to do service for others who are less fortunate. Because of her hard work and spirit to volunteer, we have chosen her as our member of the month.”

Julieann Nodora, President

EASTLAKE MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Isabella Murillo

C/O ‘21

“For the month of May, my club’s member of the month is Isabella. Isabella demonstrated her ability to work hard to serve her community during the Elimaynate week. She consistently completed service projects and she was always the first to submit her projects. I am excited to see what she has in store for future projects and I am proud to have her in Key Club.”

Dante Villalobos, President

CRAWFORD MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Lancy Ngo

C/O ‘21

“This member deserves member of the month of May because they did their job without being asked. They’re also our secretary. They also asked questions they had which helped me guide them. Whenever I did ask for them to input hours into the spreadsheet they did it instantly. Our club would struggle if we didn’t have their help.”

Mindy Phan, President

MATER DEI MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Lauren Bajo-Smith

C/O ‘21

“For this month, I am recognizing Lauren Bajo-Smith as member of the month. Lauren is our editor/webmaster and is responsible for making our Instagram posts. Lauren is always ready to take on her duties as an officer and completes her tasks in a timely manner. She actively promotes the club which has increased our membership. She consistently demonstrates dedication to and passion for the Key Club cause, and her posts have been super cute!”

Marissa Cagouia, President

SWEETWATER MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Arvie Cabal C/O ‘21

“Arvie deserves recognition as member of the Month because she shows me her commitment towards key club by being active on duty and doing service and always reaching out to me whenever she has any questions. Arvie has been an active member since last term and showed much interest, earning the position of Vice President. She takes initiative when it comes to moving forward, and introduces new ideas to me and the board during meetings. She’s also not just very committed in key club, but very active in other clubs which shows how much of a well rounded person she is. In conclusion, I believe Arvie deserves this months’ member recognition.”

Raffi Flores, President

Congratulations! Thank you all for your dedication and hard work
