550 DUES PAID MEMBERS As a Key Clubber it is highly important that you submit your dues on time! If home club dues are not submitted by February 1st, then your club WILL be suspended, dues MUST be paid to be back in Good Standing. If dues still are not paid after that, the Key Club is made inactive leading to a $100 fine. Now you may ask, why do we pay dues? As a dues paid member you have the opportunity to receive major scholarships, district awards, run for officer positions, and attend major events (i.e. Fall Rally South & DCON). PLEASE NOTE MEMBER DUES CAN BE PAID ANYTIME THROUGHOUT THE TERM!

$2500 FOR PTP The preferred charity we serve is PTP, the Pediatric Trauma Program, whose goal is to reduce the number of children injured by preventable trauma. Statistically speaking unintentional injuries happen to be the #1 death cause of children aged 14 and under in the U.S., but 90% of these injuries can be prevented as shown by numerous studies. Cali-Nev-Ha Kiwanis began this organization in 1994 using donations to help funding for training of doctors, nurses, and other first responders along with medical equipment.

4000 SERVICE HOURS Key Club IS a community service club afterall, with service comes leadership by inspiring other people to good for their community. The eliMAYnate service has already accumulated about 358.5 hours, almost 10% of our goal already! I have faith this Division can go places, you have a fighting chance to be recognized by the CNH Key Club District if you complete a certain number of hours or even win the member of the year for the Division. We serve because of the motto “Caring - our way of life. and a core value of service. 05 | division goals

In the month of April, many schools worldwide were closed due to the global pandemic, COVID-19. Many volunteering events had to be postponed or even canceled and had members staying home for their own safety. However, certain people have gone above and beyond during these difficult times to express their support to their community. Karen Bergan, the sister of Morse High’s own AP Art History teacher, worked around all these challenges and organized a local art drive. This drive focused on allowing students and other community members to show and express their full support to the first-responders who are currently putting their lives at risk. Some of our very own Key Club members, such as Alan Cruz, Leilani Seang, and Arriana Bascos, took this opportunity and created artworks for nurses and doctors. When asked about how it must have felt to show support towards first responders, Alan replied, “I am incredibly grateful to be able to be part of this project. All of us are home during this quarantine and now more than ever we need to give back to our community. By being part of this project, I was not only able to express my support for these heroes, but also take some time to explore my creative side. I believe it is crucial to take a step back and invest some time in ourselves to focus on our health.” Adding on, Leilani answered, “Since we’re in quarantine, I feel as though I’ve lost a bit of connection with humanity, so I’m very grateful that I was given the opportunity to give back and support first responders. It gives me a sense of relief that I’m still contributing to the community because social distancing severed my ties with humanity and my abilities to give back.” Lastly, our very own Key Club president - Arriana Bascos - stated “It felt so good making these thank you posters. Knowing that this little thank you card can make those nurses and doctors smile during these harsh times is such a great feeling and I’m glad I took part in that.”

For the past month, the SDSCPA Key Club has been creating both digital and manual Thank You Cards for all of the essential workers. As everyone continues to partake in social distancing, our club thought of a fun and creative way to work on getting hours in as the new term starts. We all are continuing to show our love and appreciation to our strong healthcare workers during these trying times. The Thank You cards not only are thoughtful and caring gestures, they also give us a chance as an art school, to showcase our creativity. I believe that I can speak for the entire club when I say that it was enjoyable to show our gratitude with simple, yet meaningful words.

PROVIDED BY Elena Gonzales SDSCPA Editor Our Mater Dei Key Club leadership team put together a large thank you chain for medical workers battling COVID-19. Our message was simple: “To our frontline workers: Thank you for keeping us safe. We appreciate all of your hard work and commitment. You are our heroes! <3 Key Club. Spreading the word through email and Instagram, we gathered over 25 active Mater Dei members to participate. The post was created April 24th and distributed through our Instagram (@MDCHSkeyclub). Many of our key club members created beautiful signs that created an overall stunning visual. It was so nice to show our appreciation for the frontline workers battling this pandemic in a way that could be easily accessed. We hope that it was shown to as many workers as possible, as we appreciate their dedication. In the end, we were very grateful to have so many members participate in one of our first online Key Club activities, and we hope to accomplish more virtually as time passes.

Hello my loves, it’s your LTG Kayla! I know quarantine hasn’t been amazing taking a toll on all of our extracurriculars so it is extremely inspiring to still see high DCM attendance. With so much free time I have been able to get to know some of you guys one on one which has been an amazing benefit. I consider myself a very sociable person so don’t ever hesitate to just text me at random, I don’t mind, it makes me more connected to the Division. The month of April was fairly slow, many of us slowly transitioning with distance learning, but this DCM was special because it was also a social event. We watched Disney’s Mulan and despite minor technical difficulties with Zoom lag, I still consider it a first good shot as we were still figuring things out and it was my 6th day as LTG. During the meeting portion DLT was announced, they are the Dream Team, I’m proud to be able to work with such hard and passionate workers. Before the movie, I also hosted a minor icebreaker asking how everyone was doing mentally, check out the next page for more! Now May was much more successful! We returned DCM’s back to normal schedule, every first Wednesday of the month starting 6PM, this was a normal council meeting discussing potential service projects, what members are looking forward to post-quarantine, etc. That week the DCM took place happened to be part of ‘eliMAYnate service week’, can you believe we have already accomplished almost 10% of our service goal from 5 days. I know I have said that over and over, but guess what I’m gonna say this again too, I appreciate our Dolphin members so much. These small victories of ours are what inspire me to work hard for all you, it makes the job feel easy knowing that people are serving alongside their friends.

NEXT DCM JUNE 3RD @6PM RSVP ON LINKTREE!

These questions may seem mundane, but I’ve noticed with lack of social life many people have been struggling to reach out to others for help. I had noted, “If you are reading this, please remember you are very loved and appreciated, you are not in this alone. We will get through this difficult moment of time, stay hopeful, healthy, & safe. Be kind to yourselves & each other! Reach out to old friends, cook some dinner with your mom, play Animal Crossing with your little brother, or even sew a face mask. Whatever you choose, I hope that you remain happy & healthy.” Q: What do you miss most about school? A: I miss my friends and the senior experience. Q: What is your favorite quality of yourself & why? A: Outgoing Bc I’m able to talk to others and can be approachable and I love to make new friends. Q: What’s one thing you have accomplished during quarantine? A: I’ve planned all my dcm’s & dcm activities for the rest of my term. Mental health awareness was part of the platform I ran on, CHARITY, the A standing for Advocacy. Statistically speaking this generation of the youth is extremely prone to mental illnesses like depression and anxiety, but the conversation is often muted due to a majority of society viewing it as a weakness thus leading people to be afraid to advocate for themselves. There is the constant fear of being judged for struggling with a positive mindset, especially when you finally trust someone enough to talk to them only for your feelings to be disregarded because they are “small” compared to other global issues. Strive to be the best for yourselves because that will fulfill you for the rest of your life, peer approval is a temporary bandage. This is mainly due to the presence of social media in our everyday lives, as nice as it is to stay connected, it has its flaws in affecting perception of self-love and even worth. Self-deprecation has even become a norm because “It’s better to set people up for disappointment at first rather than getting their hopes up.” You are not defined by your ability to blend in, important and loving people in your life value you, not a reputation or facade. Now, to my seniors, I sympathize with your final year of celebration being stripped, I know you’ve worked these four years of high school for the better of your future. I wish you the best on all of your future endeavors because this blip in time is only going to strengthen you all, the Division cares for you all deeply and we are here to at least try to support even if us non-seniors are unable to fully understand. 13 | dcm’s
