looking after YOU
By Sophie Harris, Pregnancy and Postpartum Psychotherapist and Founder of Looking After Mum and Expert Speaker at The Baby Show (thebabyshow.co.uk).
LOOKINGAFTERMUM.CO.UK @LOOKING_AFTER_MUM
Pregnancy can be truly beautiful. It is a time that is often celebrated by society. However, alongside the physical changes, the journey to motherhood can also change your mental health. While every woman’s experience is different, there are some common mental health challenges that many expecting mums may encounter.
MOOD SWINGS
Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can lead to mood swings, ranging from elation to tearfulness. These mood swings are entirely normal and are often a result of the body adjusting to surges in hormones. However, as a pregnant mum going through this, you may often feel ‘out of control’ and find it hard to keep up with this emotional rollercoaster.
LOW MOOD OR DEPRESSION
For some mums, you may have periods of consistent low mood and lack of motivation. Many pregnant mums find it difficult to adjust to being pregnant. It can feel really difficult when many of the usual coping strategies that you would use to maintain your mental health, such as exercise or socialising, can be limited. Although this can be true for
anyone during pregnancy, this is made worse if you are experiencing health conditions such as pregnancy sickness.
STRUGGLING TO SLOW DOWN
Pregnancy is a time that most of us would benefit from slowing down from our usual fast-paced lives. However, as a society, we are not taught to listen to our needs and to take things
slow. Often, it may feel like your self-worth is equated to how productive you are. This can make it feel difficult to comfortably take the time that you need during pregnancy. It can feel even harder to slow down if you are working in a fast-paced job, or if you have other children or responsibilities.
FEELING OVERWHELMED BY RESPONSIBILITY
Growing another human being comes with a lot of pressure. It can feel overwhelming to navigate medical appointments, remain safety conscious for your baby, keep up with your own physical body changes and learn what foods to eat and avoid. For some, this can lead to anxiety about your health and the health of your baby. It is also common for mums to experience excessive guilt when they perceive that you may have got something wrong.
DEALING WITH UNCERTAINTY ABOUT THE FUTURE
Pregnancy often brings about feelings of uncertainty and apprehension about the future. From concerns about
childbirth to what kind of parent you are going to be, it can feel like there are a lot of unknowns about how your life is going to look. This uncertainty can lead to heightened stress, anxiety, and feelings of overwhelm.
FEELING BAD ABOUT YOUR BODY
Pregnancy brings about dramatic changes to a woman’s body. These
In conclusion, whilst pregnancy can be a time of joy and excitement, it can also bring about significant changes in mental health. If you are experiencing any of these difficulties, know that you are not alone. Throughout your pregnancy, looking after yourself will be highly beneficial. Engaging in simple self-care practices such as mindfulness, journaling your feelings,
changes can sometimes lead to negative feelings about body image. Weight gain, stretch marks, and other physical changes may trigger insecurities about how you look and feel. Many pregnant mums get caught in a comparison trap, often negatively comparing their experience to other pregnant women.
spending time in nature, and speaking with friends or family will all be fundamental to your day-to-day mental health. Many pregnant women may also benefit from professional help from a therapist to help navigate this journey to motherhood. If you are in doubt, then speak with your midwife, or GP or arrange an appointment with a therapist.

Staying motivated: 5 tips for exercising during pregnancy
By Melinda Nicci, CEO & Founder of Baby2Body, the #1 Pregnancy Wellness App and Expert Speaker at The Baby Show (thebabyshow.co.uk)
“FITNESS DURING PREGNANCY ISN’T JUST ABOUT STAYING ACTIVE; IT’S ABOUT FEELING CONFIDENT AND PREPARING FOR MOTHERHOOD’S CHALLENGES.”
One of the first things I did when I was pregnant was to seek resources to stay active. I was an athlete, and fitness was a massive part of my lifestyle and my identity. However, I quickly realised that there was so much conflicting information around the subject, and the general advice was to take it easy and leave my active days behind. That answer didn’t sit well with me, and I knew in my gut that it wasn’t the healthy route.
As a pre and postnatal fitness trainer, the concept of safe and effective exercise is at the core of what I do. But fitness during pregnancy isn’t just about staying active; it’s about feeling confident and preparing for motherhood’s challenges, it’s about reducing pregnancy complications and giving your baby a head start in their future health. So it’s crucial that you find your mojo – that’s where the Baby2Body App can help.
2
1
CONSISTENCY IS WHAT COUNTS
Consistency is key, so start with movement that feels good and make it a daily habit. Moving your body every single day is what counts and will lead to you feeling healthier over time.
4
Here are my top tips for exercising and staying motivated during pregnancy:
MAKE A REALISTIC SCHEDULE
Workout motivation often gets derailed when we set unrealistic expectations. You’ll say to yourself, “I’ll work out five times a week”, then when life gets busy, it feels like you’ve missed the mark. Achieving goals motivates us, so make a plan and schedule workouts like unmissable appointments!
3
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
The #1 rule is exercise should make you feel good, and it can be demotivating when it doesn’t. If you’re trying to finish a HIIT class and feel terrible, Maybe you need to slow things down with a restorative yoga practice instead! If your workouts feel forced, let your body (instead of your mind) lead.
FUEL YOUR BODY START TODAY AND JUST DO ONE WORKOUT
The food we eat is directly linked to how we feel, so choose wisely, avoid processed foods, and eat fresh where possible. It’s also important to listen to your body. Pay attention to how it reacts to certain foods and how you feel after eating. It will tell you much about what is good for you and what’s not.
5
That’s it. Just get out there today for one workout. It can be challenging to remember that feel-good feeling when you haven’t exercised in a while, so do one workout and write down that feeling on a piece of paper so you can go back to it and remind yourself of what exercise gives you.
Knowledge is power, especially during pregnancy, but my final tip is to be cautious when searching the web for guidance. A lot of the information can be misleading and will only add to your worries. If you’re concerned, always talk to a medical professional. The Baby2Body App is always there to give you evidence-based information to keep you happy and healthy throughout your pregnancy.
Baby2Body has joined forces with The Baby Show, the UK’s leading pregnancy and parenting event, to hold a panel advising on health and fitness at each show across the year, taking place in Birmingham, Manchester and London. For more information or to buy tickets, visit thebabyshow.co.uk
Support That Hugs You Back
Meet the new standard in maternity supportwear that’s changing the game for active mums-to-be.
Back pain. Hip discomfort. That persistent pelvic pressure that builds throughout the day. If you’re pregnant and feeling it all – you’re not imagining it, and you’re definitely not alone.
Around 70% of women experience significant lower back or pelvic pain during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters. But despite how common it is, most maternity support options remain outdated or ineffective. It’s time to move beyond compromises. Because while pregnancy discomfort may be inevitable – feeling unsupported isn’t.
ENTER: HUGUP®. NEXT-GEN MATERNITY SUPPORTWEAR DESIGNED TO EASE EVERYDAY DISCOMFORT AND HELP YOU MOVE WITH CONFIDENCE.
Engineered by top textile experts, Hugup is inspired by traditional belly wrapping and developed with clinical insight. With strategic support zones that lift and stabilise, it’s been positively evaluated by medical professionals –redefining what maternity wear should look and feel like: modern, effective and beautiful.

1 WHY YOUR BUMP DESERVES BETTER
Pregnancy support belts and taping can help – but many are bulky, rigid or poorly fitted, sometimes making strain worse. Hugup does what others don’t: clinically backed, stylish and genuinely supportive. It cradles your bump like a hug, yet supports up to 40lbs of extra weight with ease. The result? Better posture, less daily strain, and freedom to move – whether you’re doing the school run, heading to work or stretching it out at yoga.
2
3
STYLE MEETS SCIENCE
Made entirely in Italy from premium yarns, Hugup is lightweight, breathable and completely seamfree – no irritation, just comfort. The adjustable belt features elastic and non-elastic zones for precision support, and the rotating magnetic buckle allows easy adjustments as your day (or belly) changes.
At £329, Hugup is a high-performance, clinically backed alternative to outdated maternity support – that really delivers.
READY TO FEEL HUGGED, LIFTED, AND BEAUTIFULLY SUPPORTED?
NOT YOUR AVERAGE BUMP SUPPORT
Let’s break it down:
Belly bands? Generic, often unsuitable for all day comfort and not exactly stylish.
Taping? Great support, but done by a physio – inconvenient and expensive.
Maternity shapewear? Compression on a pregnant belly can feel tight and restrictive, rather than supportive. Hugup is support that works - with your body, not against it.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR BODY & PELVIC FLOOR FOR BIRTH
A pelvic health physiotherapist’s top tips
Our focus can be on prepping for how we want birth to look, alongside thinking about what our baby needs; however, we are not often given much information on how to prepare our body for birth. I always say that birth is like a marathon, and pregnancy is the training season before the race. However, in reality, none of us have much time, so what should we focus our energy on?
1WORK ON PELVIC FLOOR EXERCISES THROUGHOUT PREGNANCY
Pelvic floor exercises are important during pregnancy due to the added weight on the muscles as your baby grows. Research has shown that working on pelvic floor exercises throughout pregnancy reduces the risk of incontinence in the 3rd trimester and postpartum. Ideally, you should be working on pelvic floor exercises daily, remembering, like all muscles, that the pelvic floor needs to relax fully as well as contract.
The best way to do pelvic floor exercises is to follow the steps below:
• Sit or lie in a comfortable and relaxed position.
• Think about holding in wind and squeeze around the back passage.
• Then, think about bringing this contraction forward towards the pubic bone at the front of your pelvis.
• Then, allow the muscle to relax fully.
• Repeat this ten times.
• You should not feel your legs or bottom muscles contracting. Instead, you should feel this movement internally.
2
PRACTICE PERINEAL MASSAGE FROM 34 WEEKS
Perineal massage is a technique that can be used to gradually stretch the perineal tissues in the weeks running up to birth. The perineum is the area between the vaginal opening and the anus, which is most stretched during vaginal birth and is where most tears occur. Perineal massage can be used to help reduce the severity or likelihood of tearing during vaginal birth. Therefore, it is recommended that all women are informed on how to do it. This is supported by extensive research, so it is worth trying if you haven’t already.
Here is how to do it:
• Sit in a supported and relaxed position.
• Apply a natural oil to the vulva and your thumb.
• Insert your thumb just inside the vagina and gently sweep side to side, applying gentle pressure onto the perineum.
• Then, think of the area like a clock. 12 o’clock at the pubic bone and 6 o’clock towards the anus.
• Hold and stretch for 30 seconds in each direction from 3-9 o’clock. This should feel like an intense stretch but not painful.
• You can repeat this a few times a week from 34 weeks.
Please check with your medical professional if you have any concerns about your cervix or placenta or have a high-risk pregnancy about whether it is appropriate for you to do.
3
WORK ON DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING
The diaphragm is closely related to the pelvic floor, and they naturally move together. Therefore, working on diaphragmatic breathing is not only calming and suitable for managing stress but also has many physical benefits.
Try it using the tips below:
• When sitting, place one hand on your lower ribs at the side and one on your tummy.
• Take a breath in, expanding your lower ribs and allowing your tummy to just rise and expand gently.
• Then allow the breath out fully.
• Repeat this slowly and steadily ten times.
I hope these top tips help you during your pregnancy feel more empowered about how to take care of yourself and your pelvic floor as you prepare for birth.

Buying for the baby
What you really need
If you're gearing up for your baby's big arrival, here's the ultimate checklist of must-have's.
As if becoming a parent isn’t bewildering enough, you’re suddenly expected to be familiar with lots of babyspecific jargon you’ve most likely never heard before and parenting items you never knew existed. It can be overwhelming working out what you need, and we know that parents-to-be often end up spending a lot of money on baby products that just get left in the cupboard gathering dust.
We regularly ask thousands of parent’s which products they owned – either given or bought – during pregnancy and the first two years of having a baby. We also rigorously lab test a massive range of baby equipment, including bedside cribs, cot mattresses, stair gates, slings and carriers. Find the musthave products you should invest in and what you need to know about them.
Car seat
If travelling by car, you’ll need an infant car seat to bring your baby home from the hospital. Some baby products are okay to buy second-hand, but a car seat is not one of them. While a pre-owned car seat may look in good condition, it could have internal damage that you can’t see, for example, a
hairline crack caused by dropping it. This could affect the structural integrity, preventing it from adequately protecting your little one in a collision. We crash-test each car seat we review, and we’ve found several Best Buys for around £100, so you don’t need to spend lots to get a safe car seat.
Which? Baby and child editor and buggy buying expert at The Baby Show, Alison Potter reveals what you need to know about the key baby products parents can’t live without
Pushchair
Not all buggies are suitable from birth. You either need a pushchair with a lie-flat seat or, ideally, a travel system-compatible buggy that can take a carrycot or infant car seat. Pushchairs can be expensive and it’s no surprise many parents look to save by purchasing pre-owned ones.
If you’re buying a pushchair secondhand, make sure to look for a safety label confirming compliance with BS EN 1888-2:2018+A1:2022 (the British Standard for safety testing), and if you can’t see one, be wary. Also, check that it hasn’t been involved in a product recall by searching for the product name online along with the word ‘recall’ or by contacting the manufacturer. Although our most expensive Best Buy costs more than £1,200, our testing has uncovered excellent Best Buy pushchairs costing £100-£200.
Baby Monitor
There are three options - basic audio, video and smart. Audio monitors can cost as little as £25 and will help you to hear when your baby needs you. If you want to be able to look at your baby too, go for a video or smart monitor which will cost between £50-£200.
Smart monitors are typically the priciest, but they are more versatile because unlike audio or video monitors, you can check in on your baby via your smartphone when away from home. But if you go for a smart wi-fi monitor it’s essential you set a strong password and activate two-factor authentication to protect yourself from hackers. Also make sure to regularly check for any security software updates too.

Buggy feature
checklist
When you make that exciting (confusing?) trip to experience the world of buggies, ensure that you find and test out the most suitable buggies for your needs.
They will all have features you love or may tradeoff for a pretty pattern or bigger basket. By using this useful tick list, you can whittle down which features are most important to you, hopefully making your shortlisting and shopping experience more pleasurable whilst obtaining your most vital features.
1 = Not important
5 = Crucial
Easy folding
If you will be a frequent folder ensure it is a sweat free experience. Some can be done one handed.
Handle height
Convertible to carry two
If you plan on more, a single to double can save you buying a new set of wheels down the line.
Tall or short? Handle heights vary, some retract, ensure comfort for frequent drivers.
One handed driving
Carrying a child or calling a friend? Check that you can steer the buggy with one hand.
Small turning circles
This simple feature can be vital in many everyday activities, when testing try spins and pirouettes (remembering you are pregnant).
Multidirectional seat
Seats can face you or the world. Research shows that parent facing significantly increases speech development, plus you can see that cute face.
Wheels for bumps
Important if you like country walks or cobbles! Inflated or rubber options may trump plastic.
Will you need to manoeuvre it upstairs or lift it into a boot etc?
Some sturdy models can be heavy.
Big seat recline
For amazing toddler naps. Baby needs a lay flat unit from birth (completely flat), check the seat unit angle, most require a carrycot attachment to use from birth.
Washable covers / padding / liner
Pristine when you buy them, help baby keep it that way by being washable.
Big basket
Consider ease of basket access and extra weight that can go on the handles (without tipping).
Wheel suspension
No wobbly chubby cheeks providing a smoother ride over bumps (N.B. bumps can help baby nod off)
Car seat compatible chassis (travel system)
To easily click baby from the car into your buggy chassis. Choose a car seat and ensure it fits into your shortlisted buggies (adaptors typically required) 1
Size (folded)
Will it fit in your hallway and boot (with shopping, change bag and general clobber)?
1 2 3 4
Public transport suitable
For this you might want a light weight, easy folding buggy for efficient, sweat free boarding.
Big
hood
Most have a nice big hood but check this and sun protection when out - also ease of fitting the rain cover.
One handed seat recline
Try it in store, it's an extremely useful feature.
Cup holder (you and baby)
Yes – it is an important feature: to keep fluid levels up and still have two hands.
Matching change bag
Or you can go for mismatch of accent fabrics or designs (or perhaps a designer piece)
Other features to think about
View window in hood
Sun shade length +UPF Easy, well positioned brake
Matching footmuff Bag hook
5 point safety harness (older child) Zip pocket for phone / keys etc.

the trust Lullaby
The Lullaby Trust is a charity that exists to keep babies safe and keep grieving families supported.
WE DO THIS BY:
• Empowering parents, carers and professionals with trusted and life-saving advice on safer sleep and baby safety.
• Funding research into sudden and unexpected death of babies and young children, to save lives.
• Offering anyone affected by the sudden or unexpected death of a baby or young child a supportive space with bereavement support.
OUR IMPACT:
The work we have done over the decades has reduced the rates of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by 81% since 1991. We’ve invested over £12 million into research over the years, which paired with nation-conquering safer sleep guidance and awareness, has saved over 30,000 babies’ lives (since 1991). We will not rest until no baby dies suddenly or unexpectedly.
Safer sleep tips during the colder months
Winter can be a challenging time for families, with worries about heating homes. It’s understandable to worry about keeping your baby warm. While it can be tempting to wrap your baby up to keep them warm and cosy, it’s important to remember that it’s possible for them to overheat, and this increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In fact, research has shown that babies are safer when they’re a little bit cooler, rather than too hot.
The recommended room temperature for a baby’s sleep space is 16 – 20°C. There is much more detail for each point on our website: LULLABYTRUST.ORG.UK
1
REMEMBER THE ABCS OF SAFER SLEEP
Before we talk about safer sleep in winter, we have to cover the basics. When it comes to safer sleep, remember your ABCs. Always sleep your baby on their back in a clear cot or sleep space. Do this day and night to reduce the risk of SIDS.
3
NO WEIGHTED SWADDLES, BLANKETS OR SLEEPING BAGS
These aren’t recommended for babies under one year old as there is a risk of overheating and head covering.
4
NO HATS, HOODS OR OUTDOOR CLOTHING
When babies are indoors or in the car, remove any outdoor clothes such as snowsuits, coats, hats or hoods. Babies are unable to regulate their body temperature like adults can.
5
DON’T USE BUMPERS AND HOT WATER BOTTLES
Don’t use hot water bottles in any baby sleep space, as they can make your baby too hot. Cot bumpers pose the risk of accidents to babies and toddlers, so though they may seem cosy, they come with a risk, so we don’t recommend them.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY BABY IS TOO HOT?
We recommend checking your baby’s chest or the back of their neck to check their temperature. It’s fine if they feel warm, but if they are sweaty or clammy it means they are too hot, so remove a layer of bedding or clothing. Their hands and feet will always feel cold, so check their chest and back instead.
2
DON’T PLACE YOUR BABY’S COT NEAR A RADIATOR
Make sure your baby’s cot is away from any radiators and other heat sources. If you’re using another heat source like a portable heater, direct it away from your baby. Babies can’t regulate their own temperature so they could get too hot.
WHAT DO I DO IF I THINK MY BABY IS COLD?
If you think your baby is cold, or if your room temperature is slightly colder than 16 – 20°C, add an extra lightweight blanket or layer of clothing. Remember that a folded blanket would be classed as two blankets. Be sure to tuck any sheets or a blanket in securely, making sure they’re no higher than your baby’s shoulders to help avoid their head getting covered by loose bedding.
If you use a baby sleeping bag, use a higher tog if you feel the sleeping bag is not enough.
WITH THE LULLABY TRUST’S CHIEF EXECUTIVE, JENNY WARD
WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO ANY NEW PARENT?
Have confidence in your boundaries. We hear from parents and carers that they can feel ‘awkward’ asking other people caring for their baby to stick to safer sleep practices. Or when they ask people holding their baby to wash their hands, or request they don’t kiss their baby (to help prevent the spread of infection, which babies are particularly vulnerable to). It’s important that parents and carers stay strong about their boundaries when it comes to their baby’s safety. If you are struggling with implementing those boundaries, it can be helpful to send those caring for your baby a link to our website, instead of delivering the information yourself.
AS NEW PARENTS WE CHERISH THE TIME OUR NEWBORN FALLS ASLEEP, AND WE CAN GET SOME REST OURSELVES.
WHY DO YOU SAY IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO LET YOUR BABY SLEEP IN A BOUNCER OR SWING?
We advise this because the safest place for a baby to sleep is in a firm, flat, separate and clear sleep space. Bouncers and swings are not firm and flat. Baby’s head can also slump forwards in swings and bouncers, which can fold their airway (breathing tube), which can make it difficult for them to breathe. Having a newborn is exhausting, so before getting some rest yourself, take the baby out of the swing or bouncer and put them in their own clear, separate sleep space, such as a cot or Moses basket. Then you too can get some much-needed rest.
THERE ARE SO MANY SLEEP PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET. IN YOUR VIEW, WHAT ARE THE MAIN SLEEP ITEMS A NEW PARENT NEEDS FOR THEIR BABY?
You don’t need to buy lots of products, or spend a lot of money to achieve safer sleep. There are just a few items that we’d recommend:
• A cot or Moses basket
• A portable sleep space, such as a Moses basket, travel or carry cot
• A mattress
• A sleeping bag, or sheets and a blanket
• A room thermometer
• A car seat
THE WORK YOU HAVE DONE IN SAVING BABIES’ LIVES IS AMAZING. WHAT ARE THE CHARITY'S MAIN AIMS FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS?
We know that awareness of safer sleep saves babies’ lives. One of our key focus areas over the next five years is on the inequalities that mean some babies and young children are more likely to die than others. For example, families living in the most deprived areas of the country continue to experience a disproportionally higher rate of SIDS. Our job is to keep babies safe, so we’ve recently started to deliver Bedtime Bundles to those living in temporary accommodation, to reduce the barriers that make it hard to practice safer sleep in temporary accommodation. With the people living in temporary accommodation on the rise, we expect the need for our Bedtime Bundles will continue to grow. And we want to be there, for every family and for every baby.
Another key area for us is further growing our bereavement support. No family should face grieving for their baby alone. We want to reach everyone affected by the death of a baby or young child, and support them through their darkest days. We also want to expand our Care of Next Infant (CONI) programme, to support bereaved parents with the fears and anxieties they have when they have subsequent children.

Extended rear-facing baby car seats
Which? expert Alison Potter explains the benefits
Which? are regular speakers at The Baby Show, the UK’s largest and bestloved pregnancy, baby, and parenting events taking place at Excel London 6th8th March 2026 –www.thebabyshow. co.uk
An extended rear-facing car seat is the safest way for young children to travel, offering much more protection in a crash compared to a forward-facing car seat. Although you can buy forward-facing car seats for little ones as young as nine months or 15 months, ideally you’d keep your child facing backwards from birth until they’re at least four years old.
Which? has rigorously crash-tested extended rear-facing car seats and they are one of the safest ways to transport your child.
In a front-on collision (which is one of the most common types of crashes) your baby’s head is cocooned by the padding and the shell of their car seat. The back of the seat supports the head and back, limiting the movement of the head and reducing the forces on the neck. They also distribute the pressure from the child restraint as widely as possible over the strongest parts of the body, reducing the risk of injury.
The 62 extended rearfacing car seats we’ve crash-tested range in price from £145 up to £620. Some are R44 car seats, an older regulation where the seat is installed using the car’s seatbelt, and are suitable in rearward facing mode for children weighing up to 18kg. But the majority are R129 i-Size car seats, the newer regulation where the car seats are typically used with an Isofix base that clips into your car. They are generally suitable in a rear configuration until your child reaches 105cm tall, but we’ve seen some car seats, from brands such as Axkid and BeSafe, that allow you to rearward face for even
longer, up to 125cm, which is around five or six years old.
As it can be awkward getting older toddlers into a rear-facing car seat, one option is to get a swivel car seat with 360-degree rotation. This enables them to be rear-facing and turned towards the door to easily lift them in and out. These can be more expensive than standard extended rearfacing car seats, but they might be worth it if it means reducing strain on your back.
Out of the 62 extended rear-facing car seats we’ve tested, 11 have impressed us enough to get our Best Buy recommendation. Seven disappointed in our tests and we’ve labelled them Don’t Buys. This could be due to poor crash test results, or in some cases the installation process is complicated. It’s vital to ensure your car seat is fitted correctly; if it’s difficult or overcomplicated
to fit into your car, it could be installed wrongly. In that scenario, it will be much less likely to adequately protect your child in a collision with another car.
If you’re worried you might install your car seat incorrectly, try to buy it from a retailer with a fitting service. Or you can also attend a child car seat fitting event, where experts will check if your car seat is installed correctly. These are carried out across the country by local councils and other organisations, such as

Breastfeeding?
What do you really need to know
Nurturing your nursing journey
Breastfeeding is a remarkable journey filled with love, bonding, and nourishment for both mother and baby. However, it can also present challenges and uncertainties. The UK has the worst breastfeeding rates in the world. Whilst around 70% of new mothers start breastfeeding, less than 1% are doing so exclusively at six months of age (as per NHS and WHO recommendations). I know firsthand that a bit of information and support can go a long way when it comes to breastfeeding success.
To help you embark on this journey confidently, here are some essential breastfeeding tips to guide you every step of the way:
SEEK SUPPORT
Surround yourself with a supportive network of family, friends, and healthcare professionals who can offer guidance, encouragement, and reassurance. Joining a breastfeeding support group or seeking assistance from a lactation consultant can provide invaluable support. Research local support whilst you are pregnant and budget for it, too.
ESTABLISH A GOOD LATCH
A proper latch is crucial for successful breastfeeding. Ensure your baby has a wide, deep latch to effectively transfer milk and prevent nipple soreness. Experiment with different positions until you find what works best for you and your baby. Whilst you may experience some tenderness, breastfeeding should not be excruciatingly painful. If it is, seek support sooner rather than later. A painful latch could be a symptom of oral ties, which require professional assessment and intervention.
“EMPOWER YOURSELF WITH KNOWLEDGE AND SUPPORT TO NAVIGATE THE BEAUTIFUL BREASTFEEDING JOURNEY.”
STAY HYDRATED AND NOURISHED
Maintain a healthy diet rich in fresh, nutrient-dense foods and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Breastfeeding requires extra calories and fluids to support milk production, so prioritise self-care and nourishment for optimal lactation. Your milk will remain nutritious even if your diet is far from perfect, but your health will suffer if vital nutrients are not being replaced by the foods that you eat. Taking a prenatal or breastfeeding vitamin or supplement can help fill in gaps in your diet.
PRACTICE SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT
Skin-to-skin contact promotes bonding and stimulates milk production. Spend time cuddling with your baby, especially immediately after giving birth and in the early days postpartum, to establish a strong breastfeeding relationship and boost your milk supply.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
Pay attention to your body’s cues and trust your instincts as a mother. Rest when you’re tired, prioritise self-care, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. Taking care of yourself is essential for your overall well-being and breastfeeding success.
MANAGE ENGORGEMENT
Engorgement is common in the early days of
breastfeeding as your milk supply adjusts to your baby’s needs. Use warm compresses, gentle massage, and express milk to relieve discomfort and prevent blocked ducts.
STAY PATIENT AND PERSISTENT
Breastfeeding is a learning process for both you and your baby. Be patient with yourself and your little one as you navigate this journey together. Remember that every breastfeeding experience is unique, and it’s okay to seek guidance and support along the way.
Embrace the beauty of breastfeeding with confidence and determination. By arming yourself with knowledge, seeking support, and nurturing your bond with your baby, you can overcome challenges and experience the joy of breastfeeding to its fullest potential.

Baby's Skin
Did you know, the largest organ in the body is our skin? It works hard to perform multiple roles including; acting as a sensory organ, regulating body temperature, and a barrier to the external environment. When your baby is in the womb, their skin is covered in vernix caseosa, which acts as a natural moisturiser but also helps to regulate the baby's body temperature. Premature or post-dates babies may have this layer of protection disrupted. When they are born it is essential that the vernix caseosa is as undisrupted as possible.
The first four weeks are sacred - only water should be used on a baby’s skin! This helps to preserve the protective layer and maintain the skin barrier. Why? This can reduce the likelihood of dry skin or irritation. After this time, a moisturiser might be introduced - but only when you think it is needed and not as a preventative. If your baby’s skin remains healthy, continue with water to help minimise any disruption to your baby’s developing skin microbiota.
PROTECTING BABY’S DELICATE AREAS
Some skin areas need a little extra protection, such as the nappy area and around the mouth. Preventing irritation here is essential, as this skin is particularly thin and sensitive.
MY TOP TIPS:
• Change nappies regularly and as soon as they are soiled.
• Apply a gentle barrier cream to the nappy area.
• Use soft cloths to wipe away dribble, and at the first signs of irritation, consider a gentle probiotic cream like BioGaia Aldermis to support the skin’s natural balance.
It’s also essential to protect your baby’s skin from environmental stressors. Dress them appropriately
for the weather, avoid harsh winds or strong sunlight. Many baby skin rashes come and go without any need for treatment — including baby acne and common viral rashes that, while they may look concerning, usually resolve on their own and do not cause long-term damage Eczema is also a common condition, affecting about 1 in 5 children. In babies, it often appears differently than in older children, with dry patches on the face that can become red and inflamed. This can often be managed with a moisturiser or probiotic cream designed to help maintain the skin’s natural barrier. If symptoms persist or worsen, always consult your healthcare professional.

Top tips on Caring for your newborn
Whether you have birthed your baby in the hospital or at home, there will come a point where you are home with no Midwives immediately at hand to offer advice or support and this is when that overwhelming fear of responsibility for a brand new human really kicks in.

Feeding
However you choose to feed your baby, it is important to feed them whenever they show hunger cues, for as long as they want; this is responsive feeding. Becoming familiar with your baby’s feeding cues such as rooting, tongue movements, rapid eye movements, head bobbing and sucking on their fists or fingers, can help to
clinical NHS experience our Midwives provide honest answers to all your maternity questions from preconception, pregnancy, labour, birth and becoming a new parent.
prevent them from crying, which is a last resort cue. If bottle feeding, allow them to take as much or as little feed as they choose - don’t force them to finish a bottle. If breastfeeding, a good guide is eight to 12 feeds in 24 hours in the early weeks lasting between 5 and 40 mins each feed depending on how efficient a feeder they are.

SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT
Spending time with baby in skin-to-skin contact (baby naked against your or your partner’s bare chest) straight after birth is one of the most important things you can do.
THIS:
• Calms you and your baby, regulates their temperature, breathing and heart rate
• Aids bonding
• Initiates and supports breastfeeding
• Kickstarts baby’s microbiome by transferring beneficial bacteria, fungi, and viruses from you to them
SLEEPING POSITION
Following The Lullaby Trust’s advice which has been adopted throughout the NHS:
DO
• Place baby in the ‘feet to foot’ position, with their feet at the end of the cot.
• Always place your baby on their back to sleep (not on their front or side).
• Have your baby in the same room as you for the first six months.
• Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress that is in good condition.
• The room temperature should be between 16 and 20°C.
DO NOT
• Use any cot bumpers, soft toys, pillows, and duvets in the cot.
• Sleep in the same bed
as your baby if you or a partner smoke, drink or have taken drugs or medications that make you drowsy, are extremely tired, if your baby was born prematurely (before 37 weeks) or had a low birth weight (2.5kg or 5½ lbs or less)
• Sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby as this increases the risk of suffocation
• Smoke during pregnancy or while you are breastfeeding, and don't let anyone smoke in the same room as your baby
• Let your baby get too hot or too cold – keeping the room temperature around 16-20 degrees is ideal. You can check baby’s temperature by feeling their chest, tummy, or the back of their neck (your baby’s hands and feet will usually be cooler, which is normal).
• Blankets and bedding should be tucked around the base of the mattress to reduce the risk of baby kicking them over their heads and should come no higher than their armpits with arms left free
CARING FOR BABY’S SKIN
Baby’s skin is approximately 30% thinner than yours making it more vulnerable to damage, so we advise:
• Avoid bathing baby for at least 24 hours but the longer the better – a top and tail is more than enough in the first few weeks
• Test the temperature of
the water before putting your baby into a bath – use a bath thermometer ideally (37-38 degrees C)
• Use only skincare products that have been designed specifically for baby’s skin – avoid any products with perfumes, essential oils, colourings, or chemical nasties
• Always moisturise them following a top and tail or a bath – babies’ skin needs extra hydration
• NEVER leave a baby in a bath unattended –drowning can occur in even an inch of water
SIGNS OF AN UNWELL BABY AND WHEN TO SEEK ADVICE
Trust your instinct and seek advice from your Midwife, GP, or local A&E if you have any concerns about your baby’s health. Symptoms to look out for that may indicate an unwell baby include (but are not limited to):
• Temperature above 38°C or below 36°C
• Changes to feeding patterns
• Sleeping more than usual
• Reduced urine output
• Pale, mottled, or blue skin, or they have a new rash
• Differences to their breathing (faster, slower, noisy with grunting or ‘tugging’ in at their chest)
• Bruising, swellings, or bleeding
• Bulging fontanelles
• Irritability
• Any new or excessive vomiting

MAM’s tips on expressing
Breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed your baby and a great opportunity for you both to bond. Many Mums find that using a breast pump to express their milk can be a great help, as it can allow them to continue offering their baby breastmilk, for longer than they might be able to if putting baby exclusively to the breast. MAM are leading experts in baby products and they pride themselves on their medical knowledge and collaborations, so we asked them for their tips on expressing.
WHY EXPRESS BREASTMILK?
There may be many reasons why a Mum chooses or needs to express. Sometimes you may simply wish to share this wonderful experience with other family members. Allowing partners or grandparents to feed your little one, whilst ensuring your baby still receives all the benefits of breastmilk. Whilst we hope that every woman will feel comfortable enough to breastfeed in public, we also realise that it’s not always practical, as there may be situations when you are away from your baby and need to express your milk. You may also choose to express if you’re getting ready to return to work and need to build up your supply.
WHAT TYPE OF PUMP?
Electric and manual pumps are both equally beneficial. A manual pump is a popular choice, as they are more cost efficient and can be a great way to test if expressing is right for you. Whilst an electric pump is ideal for expressing milk regularly. The rechargeable motor unit gives you more power and the freedom to express wherever you want.
WASTE NOT WANT NOT
New wearable pumps, such as the MAM MOVE further expand this flexibility, whilst also providing a discreet, hands-free experience. The hands-free design is perfect for the multi-tasking mama. Whether you’re snuggling with your little one, doing the dishes, or taking 5 minutes for yourself, the MAM MOVE Wearable Breast Pump offers comfortable, quiet, and peaceful pumping.
Expressing your milk enables you to store it and build up a supply. Use small storage pots which can be kept in the fridge or freezer. These can be quickly defrosted if needed in a hurry. The MAM Electric Steriliser and Express Bottle Warmer can defrost your milk in as little as 10 mins. MAM Storage Pots are reusable with a wipe clean label area, so that they can be labelled with the date, so you always use the oldest one first.
HOW LONG CAN I STORE BREAST MILK FOR?
We recommend always checking the NHS guidelines. They will always have the most up to date advice.
Breast milk is best for babies, and we believe that feeding should be a pleasurable experience in every situation. That’s why we created the MAM MOVE Wearable Single Breast Pump. Hands-free and wearable in-bra makes pumping possible anytime and anywhere. The MAM MOVE makes your breastfeeding experience as comfortable and flexible as possible. Hands-free for the flexibility every mum needs.
Combination Feeding
BREAST IS BEST? OR FULL THROTTLE ON THE BOTTLE?
In reality, many Mums find a combination of the two offers the most practical way to feed their baby. We asked a trained nurse and midwife for her advice on how to blend breastfeeding and bottle-feeding with confidence.
COMBINATION AND MIXED FEEDING
Combination feeding is all about flexibility and this might be a factor for Mums choosing to opt into mixed feeding once their breastfeeding is established. Whether the Mum might be away from her baby or needs more flexibility with feeding; mixed feeding can be an effective way to combine bottle and breast. For example, if going back to work, some mothers opt to breastfeed morning and
evening and then express their milk at work, so that their baby can be bottle-fed breast milk during the day. If a Mother does not want to express at all during work hours, she should spend a week or so before returning to work gradually reducing feed times during the day to help her breasts and baby adjust to the new routine. Mothers shouldn’t be discouraged and feel like they need to drop breastfeeding when their lifestyle changes, instead it is far better, in my opinion, for these Mothers to give themselves more options when feeding their baby, rather than to give up breastfeeding altogether. And not only do I think it is fine to give the occasional bottle of expressed milk, but I also think it can enhance the whole breastfeeding experience and offer flexibility.

“I find that the MAM bottle suits babies of all ages and is the one (using the fastest flow teat) that I most frequently recommend to a mother if her exclusively breastfed baby is refusing to take a bottle. And in my experience and opinion, once her baby is happily taking the bottle, most Mothers can then continue breastfeeding. The MAM Easy Start bottle is perfect for mothers needing more sleep, returning to work or wanting Dad to take some of the load at certain times of the day, but who want to continue breastfeeding at all other times.”

Soothers
MAM’s experts Claire and Zoe answer some of our questions on soothers – hopefully answering some of your questions too!
CLARE, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A SOOTHER?
Well, there are lots of benefits. Soothers can be used for many reasons, but their main aim is to soothe a baby to sleep, that’s been fully fed and winded, but is still finding it hard to settle down to sleep. They can also be a brilliant source of comfort to a baby who’s suffering from problems such as colic or reflux and they can give a Mum a much-needed break if her baby keeps wanting to suck on her breast for comfort rather than because they’re still hungry. And finally, when you get to the point where your child no longer needs that extra comfort of sucking, it’s much easier to remove a soother than a thumb, and this view is certainly backed up by the British Orthodontic Society.
ZOE, WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A SOOTHER?
Not all soothers are created equal! Avoid soothers with a thick, round teat, as these can prevent the mouth from closing correctly. Instead, opt for a teat that’s flat in shape with a thin and flexible neck. MAM soothers are all designed alongside orthodontists.
CLARE, CAN YOU USE A SOOTHER FROM BIRTH?
Yes, I think it’s fine to introduce a soother as soon as it becomes apparent that the baby needs that extra comfort and is unable to settle without one. But it is really important only to use a soother when the baby has had all their needs met. You shouldn’t use it just to
stop your baby crying when they’re crying to tell you that they’re still hungry.
ZOE, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD?
I breastfed my first two daughters beyond two years and currently breastfeeding my third daughter. To me soothers were a great help, but I never use them to replace breastfeeding. Soothers help me settle them down so I can have a break or for practical reasons, like driving the car.
MAM Comfort Silicone Soothers are designed specially for newborn and premature babies. Comfort Soothers have been developed alongside leading paediatricians, nurses and speech therapists, to support the needs of newborns with maximum safety in mind. MAM Comfort is made entirely from 100% high quality silicone, which is hygienic and easy to clean. The carefully designed Soother is extremely lightweight; and features an extra small orthodontic teat which supports babies natural sucking behaviour.
Comfort Soothers come in a convenient travel and steriliser case, which self-sterilises in only 3 minutes, making it easier to keep your soothers clean whilst on the go.
Understanding the
baby biome & calming colic
By Lucy Upton, Specialist Paediatric Dietitian and expert speaker at The Baby Show
Gut health for good health! As a new or expectant parent, you may have heard much about the gut microbiome and wondered about your baby’s microbiome. But what exactly is it? And why does it matter, especially in your baby's early months and years?
The microbiome comprises the vast yet unseen community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and others, that live in various body locations, with the gut microbiome being the most highlighted in recent years. Your baby’s gut microbiome is essential for their development, influencing digestion (which might be expected) but often the unexpected, like their immune function and brain development.
The importance of the microbiome
During the early months and years of your baby’s life, up until they reach 3, they will develop a community of gut bacteria that will last with them for a lifetime. Nurturing a healthy microbiome during these crucial years not only boosts your little one’s immediate health but can also impact the chances of developing conditions such as food allergies, asthma, obesity, and immune challenges down the road. Many factors are at play in shaping your baby’s microbiome; while some are within your control, others might be beyond it! Here are a few key puzzle pieces to understand;
1. MODE OF DELIVERY:
Vaginally born babies encounter their mother’s vaginal microbiota, whereas those delivered via caesarean section first come into contact with microbes from their mother’s skin and the hospital surroundings.
2. FEEDING METHOD:
Breastmilk is ideal for growing a healthy gut garden with components that support your baby’s gut health. For example;
Prebiotics: Breastmilk contains Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs), which feed beneficial gut bacteria and boost immune function.
Probiotics: It also has a variety of beneficial bacteria that help establish a healthy gut microbiome.
Antibodies: Breastmilk provides antibodies, such as Immunoglobulin A
(IgA), that protect your baby’s gut from harmful pathogens.
Babies who are formula-fed are known to grow a different community of gut bacteria, but increasingly, formula milk has added ingredients to try and mimic the components in breast milk that help good gut bacteria thrive.
3. STARTING SOLIDS
When your baby starts solid foods, their gut microbiome shifts significantly. Suddenly, there is an influx of new options to feed the community of bacteria, and certain foods, particularly those containing fibre, are the preferred fuel of good gut bacteria! While it’s essential to be mindful of the overall fibre content in your baby’s diet, prioritising a varied weaning diet, including the foods below, will be crucial in nurturing a healthy microbiome. Here are some great gut-loving options;
1. Fruit - Offer a range of colours and types, such as pureed, mashed, or soft finger food options like bananas, steamed apples, raspberries, and ripe pear.
2. Vegetables - Offer a range of options, including green and root vegetables. Many work well as finger foods and/or pureed or mashed options.
3. Beans, legumes, and lentils are easy to incorporate into meals, either by mashing or blending them
or as options like hummus, which is excellent on toast or loaded onto roasted vegetables.
4. Grains like oats are perfect for porridge, milled in pancakes, or sprinkled on top of muffins.
4. ENVIRONMENT:
Exposure to pets, siblings, and diverse environments can fuel the growth of your baby's microbiome. As your baby ages, a little dirt and outdoor play is also excellent for their gut community, and you’ll find they naturally seek out opportunities to explore
their environment. – including with their mouth!
5. MEDICATIONS:
Some medications can disturb the balance of bacteria in your baby’s gut. While antibiotics are the most notorious offenders, other drugs, like certain anti-reflux medications, can also affect the gut microbiome. However, it’s important to remember that these medications can be essential for treating specific conditions and should always be used under the advice of a doctor.
The role of the gut microbiome in conditions like colic
Colic is a condition which affects around 1 in 5 babies, regardless of whether they are breast or formula-fed. It can be a significant source of distress for parents. It is characterised by excessive crying and fussiness, typically starting in the first few weeks of life and lasting for several months. The episodes tend to occur late afternoon or evening and are not caused by hunger, discomfort, or illness. While the exact cause is unclear (which can be a huge source of frustration for families), colic is often linked to digestive discomfort or an immature nervous system. Interestingly, research has found some differences in the types of gut bacteria present in babies with colic compared to those without, suggesting that the gut microbiome may play a role in colic symptoms. This emphasises how vital gut health can be for infants, sparking interest in exploring probiotics to manage colic. In fact, some research now strongly supports using the probiotic strain Lactobacillus Reuteri DSM 17938, which has been shown to reduce crying and fussing in breastfed babies with colic. This strain is now recommended in some clinical guidelines as a treatment option for breastfed infants experiencing colic.
