La Cour royale de Tiébélé classée patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO en 2024

Tiébélé.

Une contrée lointaine. Une enclave de moins d’un kilomètre carré, nichée au cœur de ce monde sahélien si mystérieux, si envoûtant, peuplé d’esprits immémoriaux et de récits merveilleux. Nous l’avons découverte à l’orée du troisième millénaire. Dès le premier contact, la magie a opéré. Ce petit village, structuré autour d’un palais royal dont la majesté tient davantage à sa richesse spirituelle qu’à ses proportions architecturales, nous a subjugués. Pour en pénétrer l’âme, il fallait y être convié, invité à franchir le seuil de cette Cour royale, gardienne de traditions séculaires.

Un enchevêtrement de maisonnettes, un dédale de ruelles sinueuses les reliant tel un système nerveux, des courettes ponctuant cet espace scénique en décors vivants… Et puis ces murs, ces façades ornées de motifs animaliers, végétaux et géométriques, autant de formules magiques inscrites dans la terre, des incantations figées qui invoquent un monde qui nous échappe, nous qui avons oublié comment communier avec l’invisible. Un univers merveilleux, tout droit sorti d’un conte africain, figé dans le temps, ancré dans un espace qui lui est propre.

Sous un ciel immaculé et un camaïeu de bleus, avec une lumière devenue blanche – la chaleur écrasante faisait vibrer l’air donnant vie aux créatures fabuleuses que peuplaient les murs en terre. Ce jour-là, l’été 2007, notre visite allait marquer le début d’une longue histoire. Mais nous ne le savions pas encore.

Dix-sept ans plus tard, la Cour royale de Tiébélé figure aujourd’hui sur la liste très convoitée du Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. Ce fut un long processus de reconnaissance entamé depuis 2012. Nous nous souvenons de notre visite au Ministère de la culture à Ouagadougou, c’était en 2015, où nous nous sommes entretenus avec les porteurs de ce projet pour soutenir leur dossier.

Cette année-là, lors de notre visite au Burkina Faso pour inspecter nos différents projets en cours, nous avons saisi l’opportunité d’étendre notre soutien au concours DORA pour la deuxième année consécutive. L’année 2024 marque le 10e anniversaire de ce soutien. Ce concours vise à sensibiliser et former les jeunes générations à la préservation de leur patrimoine. Au fil des ans, il est devenu un événement crucial pour la pérennité du site patrimonial. Chaque année, ses structures sont renforcées, ses murs réparés, ses peintures restaurées, et ses habitants se réunissent autour de leur passé commun pour mieux le transmettre aux générations futures. Notre soutien annuel, en tant que seul partenaire financier, a été déterminant durant cette longue période d’attente de la reconnaissance par l’organisme onusien. Nous espérons maintenant que d’autres acteurs étatiques et internationaux prendront le relais.

L’autisme, un mystère médical, un drame familial,

un enjeu sociétal

Cette même année, 2014, un autre partenariat durable s’est noué, celui-ci bien plus près de nous. Grâce à notre collaboration avec l’association Monaco Disease Power, nous avons pu nous investir dans le domaine de l’autisme et agir concrètement en faveur des enfants et des adultes souffrant de handicaps mentaux, physiques ou de maladies psychiatriques.

On entend souvent dire que l’autisme n’est pas une maladie, mais une condition neurodéveloppementale qui affecte la manière dont une personne perçoit le monde et interagit avec les autres. On parle de trouble du ‘spectre’ autistique (TSA) car il regroupe une grande diversité de profils, allant de personnes nécessitant un accompagnement constant à d’autres très autonomes.

Le grand public a largement « découvert » l’autisme grâce au film mémorable de Barry Levinson, Rain Man, sorti en 1988. À travers ce road trip doux-amer, le film brosse le portrait de deux frères que tout oppose : Charlie, ambitieux, cynique et mû par la cupidité, et Raymond, autiste savant, doté d’une mémoire eidétique et de capacités mathématiques exceptionnelles, mais dénué d’intention manipulatrice et empreint d’une empathie désarmante. Bien que le personnage de Raymond ne représente qu’une fraction des réalités du spectre autistique, le film a marqué l’histoire du cinéma en étant l’un des premiers à traiter l’autisme avec sérieux et humanité.

Tout comme Raymond dans ce film culte, la figure de l’autiste agit souvent, pour autrui, comme un « saint innocent », un archétype de héros passif qui, souvent sans le vouloir, catalyse des émotions positives chez ceux qui l’entourent. Véritable guide paradoxal, ne

nous tend-il pas un miroir, nous invitant à interroger notre propre rapport au monde et à amorcer, à notre tour, une transformation intérieure ? C’est, en tout cas, l’une des leçons essentielles que nous avons tirées de cette expérience profondément transformative qu’est l’accompagnement des enfants et des adultes en situation de handicap. En nous engageant pour leur dignité, nous accomplissons pleinement la nôtre.

Où en est la recherche ? Y a-t-il des avancées ?

De façon plus prosaïque, le commun des mortels peut légitimement se poser les questions suivantes. Où en est la recherche ? Y a-t-il des avancées ? Pourra-t-on un jour amender les symptômes, ou bien s’agit-il, comme pour la maladie d’Alzheimer, d’une longue attente sans fin et sans espoir. Certes, il y a des progrès dans le diagnostique des formes précoces et une aide au développement de la plasticité cérébrale par les jeux et les activités physiques. Il y a un véritable engouement de l’impact du microbiote sur le fonctionnement cérébral. Est-ce une voie de recherche ? Notre participation n’est donc pas médicale, elle ne peut être que d’aider les

malades et leurs familles. Il faut alors constater que le coût de cette aide pour être efficace est exorbitant : construire des structures adaptées, garantir une permanence nuit et jour d’un personnel dévoué, attentif et connaissant le sujet. Autrement dit, une action fortement limitée par rapport aux besoins criants.

La construction de la Maison d’Amélie à Annot, à laquelle nous avons participé activement, ne permet d’accueillir qu’une quinzaine d’enfants avec leur famille et seulement en période de vacances scolaires pendant lesquelles les structures étatiques sont fermées. Il faut naturellement, si on le peut, aider ces structures d’accueil le plus possible mais, la solution véritable ne pourra venir que de la recherche médicale. Peut-être faudrait-il n’aider que les grands centres reconnus pour concentrer les moyens et espérer un jour déboucher sur un traitement qui, probablement, n’éradiquera pas la maladie, mais permettra de la contrôler pour rendre la vie de ces enfants et de ces adolescents plus facile.

Le projet

Cette

année 2024 nous a permis, comme le signale Madame Maria Elena Cuomo, Présidente de la Fondation, d’explorer et d’analyser encore plus profondément nos actions, les relations avec nos partenaires et donc nous-mêmes, dans cet exercice du mécénat, appliqué à la gestion des nombreuses demandes de soutien reçues.

Un des premiers constats qui s’affiche est la pluralité des définitions, que chacun attribue au mot « projet ». Pour Simone de Beauvoir (Paris 1908-1986) « C’est le désir qui crée le désirable, et le projet qui pose la fin » et pour Roger Nimier (1925-1962) « Un homme sans projets est l’ennemi du genre humain ». Et pour le dictionnaire Larousse, il s’agit d’un « But que l’on se propose d’atteindre ».

Nous avons pris le soin de préciser à nouveau ces définitions avec quasiment tous nos interlocuteurs pour arriver à une compréhension commune du but à atteindre, des actions à mener, des moyens à garantir. Tout ceci pour canaliser au mieux toutes les énergies disponibles vers ceux que nous souhaitons aider.

Je ne vais pas développer ici le cycle du projet tel qu’il est enseigné dans les écoles de management, mais une des actions essentielles à son bon pilotage est la démarche d’évaluation. La plupart des demandes que nous recevons n’abordent pas ce sujet et il reste très sensible, lorsque nous le soulevons, dans nos échanges avec nos partenaires.

Il ne faut pas oublier la résistance au changement : nous sommes tous concernés et pensons, bien sûr, que les « autres » doivent changer. Nombre d’institutions sont mécaniquement happées par des pratiques

d’une autre époque et perdent la réactivité nécessaire pour être à la pointe du progrès et en adéquation avec leur temps.

De fait, la définition du mot « partenariat » se pose. En ce qui concerne la Fondation Cuomo, nous nous devons de garantir que chaque euro dépensé le sera de la manière la plus efficiente possible. Aux acteurs de terrain de le démontrer, régulièrement, méthodiquement.

Toutes ces réalités opérationnelles éclairent l’étendue des améliorations possibles et souhaitables de la philanthropie où public et privé, devront encore plus se compléter pour faire face aux nombreux enjeux de société qui se présentent.

Malgré ces freins, en 2024 nous avons pu soutenir 2 500 écoliers dans leurs parcours académiques, 61 étudiants dans leurs formations supérieures et de recherche, 60 artistes dans l’expression et le développement de leurs arts et 24 initiatives d’intégration des plus vulnérables.

Depuis 2013, année de la convention tripartite avec la Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco et le GIEC, la Fondation Cuomo participe au Programme de bourses d’études pour soutenir la recherche sur les enjeux environnementaux actuels et futurs.

Les sept chercheurs de la sixième promotion (2021-2023) soutenus par la Fondation Cuomo ont tous complété leur thèse dans les délais impartis.

PROJET DE RECHERCHE COMBLER L’ÉCART : DES RÉPONSES D’ADAPTATION

‘INFORMELLES’ TRANSFORMANT LES SYSTÈMES CÔTIERS SOCIOENVIRONNEMENTAUX EN INDE

Labourse du GIEC, soutenue par la Fondation Cuomo, a été particulièrement pertinente pour ma recherche sur l’adaptation au changement climatique entreprise en Inde. Mener des recherches de terrain dans les pays du Sud global est extrêmement exigeant, mais fondamental pour combler les lacunes criantes en matière de connaissances sur ces régions encore trop peu étudiées.

Cette bourse m’a permis de recueillir des informations essentielles sur un phénomène en cours : la transition des terres agricoles vers l’aquaculture. Ce phénomène pourrait avoir des implications profondes et durables pour des millions de personnes et de nombreuses zones géographiques. Cette courte réflexion présente ce que le financement m’a permis d’accomplir, ainsi que les contributions intellectuelles et les retombées potentielles plus larges de

cette recherche. Elle vise à comprendre les dynamiques spatiales, les moteurs à l’échelle des ménages et les conséquences systémiques des transitions foncières vers l’aquaculture dans les zones côtières de l’Inde.

Mérite intellectuel et impact plus large de la recherche

Des rapports récents et des études qualitatives menées dans plusieurs pays d’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est suggèrent que les ondes de tempête (chocs environnementaux) et la salinité des sols côtiers (stress environnemental) poussent les populations à abandonner la culture du riz au profit de l’aquaculture. Toutefois, ce lien n’a pas encore été établi de manière empirique.

Cette recherche interdisciplinaire apporte un éclairage précieux sur les dynamiques spatiales, les facteurs à l’origine des transitions vers l’aquaculture et leurs effets sociaux et environnementaux. Elle met particulièrement en évidence le rôle du changement environnemental dans les transformations foncières et dans l’accentuation des vulnérabilités des ménages. L’étude enrichit notre compréhension des trajectoires d’adaptation au changement climatique et des transformations irréversibles de l’usage des terres, contribuant ainsi aux travaux émergents sur les changements de régime des systèmes. Elle s’inscrit dans l’appel mondial lancé par le Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat (GIEC), qui appelle à lutter contre la maladaptation et à mettre en œuvre de toute urgence des trajectoires de développement résilient au climat.

À travers cette recherche, je présente le changement d’usage des terres vers l’aquaculture comme une forme de perte et de dommage liés au changement climatique, participant aux débats internationaux sur les politiques climatiques. J’appelle à repenser les politiques de reconstruction post-catastrophe, qui privilégient aujourd’hui la reconstruction d’infrastructures à court terme au détriment

des pertes environnementales et sociales à long terme, et plaide pour des politiques de l’aquaculture plus holistiques, à la fois sociales et environnementales.

Les communautés côtières et les écosystèmes littoraux — y compris au-delà de l’Inde — seront les bénéficiaires finaux de cette recherche. Celle-ci donnera lieu à un compendium inédit sur l’aquaculture, incluant des données spatiales et des enquêtes auprès des ménages (anonymisées), particulièrement utiles dans les contextes pauvres en données. Forte de plus de dix ans d’expérience de terrain dans les zones côtières indiennes et en tant que lauréate de la bourse du GIEC 2023-2025, je suis bien placée pour intégrer les résultats de cette recherche à la fois dans les pratiques locales et dans les travaux du Groupe de travail II du Septième Rapport d’évaluation du GIEC.

Outre les publications scientifiques, je diffuserai des notes de politique publique, des articles de blog et des études de cas via des plateformes telles que regimeshift.org, afin de toucher un public plus large de praticiens. J’ai également formé sept femmes issues des zones locales de l’étude aux méthodes interdisciplinaires, dans l’espoir qu’elles deviennent des actrices locales du changement. Un court-métrage et une bande dessinée réalisés en langue locale permettront de partager ces histoires avec un large public et d’influencer les comportements locaux au-delà de la durée du projet.

UTILISATION DES FONDS

Les fonds ont permis de recueillir des données primaires inédites, sans lesquelles cette recherche n’aurait pas été possible. Voici les cinq principales formes de collecte de données réalisées :

1. Une enquête sociale à grande échelle auprès de plus de 1 300 ménages d’agriculteurs et d’aquaculteurs dans trois États indiens (Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu). Une telle enquête n’avait

jamais été menée auparavant et fournit des informations précieuses sur les raisons pour lesquelles certains agriculteurs se tournent vers l’aquaculture, d’autres non, et les expériences vécues par ceux qui ont franchi ce pas.

2. Des données sur la qualité des sols et de l’eau recueillies sur environ 400 points (113 sols et 275 eaux) dans un district de l’Odisha où l’aquaculture se développe rapidement. Ce jeu de données, unique dans le contexte indien, a permis de développer un indice basé sur la télédétection et l’apprentissage automatique pour identifier les sols trop salés pour la culture du riz, aussi bien dans le présent que dans le passé.

3. Des groupes de discussion avec plus de 30 groupes de femmes, d’agriculteurs et de travailleurs sans terre. Ces échanges permettent d’approfondir la compréhension des conséquences vécues par les groupes sociaux marginalisés, afin d’évaluer si cette reconversion économique constitue une forme d’adaptation ou de maladaptation.

4. Des entretiens avec 53 informateurs clés : universitaires, scientifiques, décideurs politiques et praticiens impliqués à différents niveaux (local, régional, national, international) dans l’industrie de l’aquaculture. Ces entretiens aident à théoriser les résultats et à en accroître la pertinence pour l’élaboration des politiques.

5. Du matériel audiovisuel, qui servira à la réalisation d’un court-métrage afin de porter les voix des populations côtières auprès d’un public plus large.

PROJET DE RECHERCHE COMPRENDRE L’IMPACT DU CHANGEMENT CLIMATIQUE SUR LE BONHEUR À TRAVERS LE CAS DU BHOUTAN QUI CHERCHE À ATTEINDRE LE 'BONHEUR NATIONAL BRUT'

Jesuis profondément honoré et reconnaissant d’avoir été sélectionné comme lauréat de la bourse doctorale du GIEC 2024, généreusement soutenue par la Fondation Cuomo.

Cette bourse a joué un rôle essentiel dans l’avancement de mes recherches sur l’impact du changement climatique sur le bonheur humain, en particulier dans le cadre de la quête du Bonheur National Brut au Bhoutan. Mais au-delà du soutien financier, ce qui distingue véritablement la Fondation Cuomo, c’est son engagement indéfectible à construire des relations humaines profondes avec ses boursiers et à promouvoir un véritable changement dans le monde.

Dans le cadre de cette bourse, j’ai eu l’opportunité de me rendre à Monaco en novembre 2024, où la Fondation Cuomo

nous a chaleureusement accueillis, ma femme et moi. Dès notre arrivée, nous avons été reçus avec bienveillance et générosité. La Fondation nous a invités dans ses locaux, où nous avons rencontré une équipe passionnée. Leur hospitalité et leur réel intérêt pour notre travail ont créé un climat d’encouragement et de soutien qui dépasse largement ce que l’on pourrait attendre d’un organisme de bourses. Ce qui m’a profondément marqué, c’est l’attention personnelle et les marques de sollicitude témoignées par Madame Maria Elena Cuomo, Présidente de la Fondation. Elle a pris le temps d’échanger avec nous en toute simplicité, nous faisant sentir que nous étions considérés non seulement comme des chercheurs, mais comme membres d’une communauté unie par une même volonté de construire un monde meilleur. Sa grâce, sa bienveillance et son engagement pour un changement porteur de sens m’ont profondément inspiré.

d’un avenir meilleur et plus durable.

PROJET DE RECHERCHE RÉPONSES CLIMATIQUES À LA TRANSFORMATION ET À LA GESTION DES ZONES HUMIDES ARTIFICIELLEMENT AMÉNAGÉES

L’annéeécoulée a marqué une avancée significative dans le cadre de mes études doctorales, soutenues par la Fondation Cuomo. Grâce à leur financement, j’ai pu achever une grande partie de mon travail de terrain dans le Canada atlantique, où j’ai réalisé une collecte de données essentielle. J’y ai évalué l’impact de la gestion par abaissement du niveau d’eau (drawdown prescrit) sur les stocks de carbone des sédiments et sur les flux de gaz à effet de serre (GES) dans des zones humides artificielles. Nos résultats indiquent que le drainage de ces zones humides créées, en tant que pratique de gestion, a un impact mineur sur le réchauffement climatique. Sur une période d’étude de 150 jours, les émissions moyennes de méthane (CH₄) et de protoxyde d’azote (N₂O) correspondent respectivement à une perte d’environ 3,9 × 10² g C m² et 7,5 × 10⁵ g N m².

L’été dernier, j’ai cartographié la végétation de ces zones humides. Des collaborateurs

ont utilisé un drone équipé d’une caméra multispectrale haute résolution pour collecter des images des cinq zones humides créées. Actuellement, nous analysons ces images à l’aide du logiciel eCognition. Notre objectif est de déterminer la superficie des types de végétation dominants et des zones d’eau libre dans ces cinq zones humides. Cette analyse nous permettra de produire une carte détaillée et d’obtenir des informations précieuses sur les caractéristiques écologiques et la biodiversité de ces milieux.

Tout ce travail n’aurait pas été possible sans le partenariat avec la Fondation Cuomo.

En tant que mère travaillant dans les sciences et issue d’un pays en développement fortement touché par le changement climatique, je suis extrêmement reconnaissante du soutien financier qui m’a été accordé pour mener à bien mes recherches doctorales. Ce financement m’a permis de me concentrer pleinement sur mes études sans souci financier, tout en m’encourageant à contribuer activement à la science. En tant que femme assumant également des responsabilités familiales, le soutien que je reçois me permet de concilier mes études avec la prise en charge de mes proches. Je me sens honorée et reconnaissante de faire partie de cette grande famille scientifique de la Fondation Cuomo.

POUR ALIMENTER LA TRANSITION VERS L’ÉNERGIE VERTE

Contribuer à ce domaine, notamment du point de vue du génie des matériaux, a été à la fois inspirant et porteur de sens, d’autant plus que la diversification de notre matrice énergétique par des sources renouvelables permet de renforcer la sécurité énergétique tout en soutenant la préservation de l’environnement.

Notre avancée la plus significative cette année concerne la technologie des batteries Li-S (lithium-soufre), qui promet une densité énergétique environ six fois supérieure à celle des batteries lithium-ion actuelles, tout en réduisant leur impact environnemental grâce au remplacement de matériaux de cathode coûteux et polluants. Notre étude computationnelle, publiée dans Applied Surface Science, a montré que les surfaces de Ni₂P peuvent efficacement résoudre l’un des

principaux obstacles des batteries Li-S : l’effet navette. La caractérisation détaillée de la surface Ni₂P(0001) a révélé des propriétés d’adsorption optimales pour les polysulfures de lithium, les sites de nickel montrant une activité catalytique particulièrement prometteuse. Ces résultats tracent des voies concrètes pour améliorer les batteries Li-S et soulignent le potentiel des approches computationnelles pour accélérer le développement des matériaux.

Nous avons également réalisé des avancées importantes dans le développement d’outils numériques pour la découverte de matériaux. Notre logiciel crystALL représente une approche simple mais puissante pour identifier des matériaux prometteurs, en exploitant des millions de structures pré-calculées afin de générer et évaluer de nouveaux candidats. L’implémentation de descripteurs structuraux et de techniques de regroupement (clustering) s’est révélée particulièrement efficace pour identifier des configurations de matériaux uniques, avec des applications allant des batteries avancées aux carburants verts comme l’hydrogène (H₂), ce dernier étant particulièrement pertinent pour des usages nécessitant un stockage longue durée et une haute puissance.

complexes présentant plusieurs configurations structurelles. Ces avancées pourraient réduire le temps de test des matériaux, passant de plusieurs années à quelques jours, accélérant ainsi considérablement le passage de la découverte à la commercialisation.

Les progrès de notre recherche ont été présentés à deux occasions cette année : lors de la conférence CALPHAD 2023 avec une communication intitulée « Ocean of Data: Tools for Data Generation of Single Phases », et à l’Energy Institute de la Pennsylvania State University avec « Computational Design and Optimization of High-Energy Density Storage Materials ».

Bien que chaque chercheur aborde ces défis sous un angle différent – des politiques publiques à l’écologie – notre objectif collectif demeure : développer des solutions durables pour un avenir meilleur.

Un autre moment fort de l’année a été ma visite au siège de la Fondation CUOMO et ma participation à la 17e Cérémonie Annuelle du Prix pour la Santé Planétaire à Monaco. Cette expérience a été précieuse pour rencontrer d’autres chercheurs soutenus par le GIEC et découvrir leurs projets innovants dans des disciplines variées.

Des avancées majeures ont également été obtenues dans la prédiction des propriétés à température finie grâce à la modélisation CALPHAD. Nous avons mis en œuvre diverses approches d’optimisation – empiriques, ab initio et par apprentissage automatique – qui ont permis d’améliorer la précision des prédictions thermodynamiques. Le développement de nouveaux modèles pour la prédiction de l’énergie de Gibbs a donné des résultats préliminaires prometteurs, notamment pour l’évaluation rapide de matériaux

Les échanges avec ces chercheurs ont renforcé ma conviction quant à l’importance de nos travaux en ingénierie des matériaux, et leur lien avec les efforts mondiaux pour atténuer les effets du changement climatique. Bien que chaque chercheur aborde ces défis sous un angle différent – des politiques publiques à l’écologie – notre objectif collectif demeure : développer des solutions durables pour un avenir meilleur.

Faire partie de cette communauté mondiale de chercheurs engagés dans la recherche de solutions durables est profondément motivant. Bien que nos travaux actuels se concentrent sur les méthodes computationnelles et le développement d’outils, notre ambition va bien au-delà de la simple conception logicielle.

Nous aspirons à voir les matériaux que nous identifions être intégrés dans des systèmes concrets, qu’il s’agisse de batteries avancées ou de dispositifs de stockage de carburants verts – des collaborations expérimentales sont déjà en cours et montrent des résultats encourageants. Cette transition de la découverte computationnelle à l’application réelle est essentielle pour concrétiser le potentiel de notre recherche, en contribuant à renforcer la sécurité énergétique et la compétitivité économique grâce aux technologies énergétiques avancées.

Les progrès réalisés cette année ont considérablement renforcé nos capacités de recherche, nous permettant d’aborder

des systèmes de matériaux de plus en plus complexes. Le soutien de la Fondation CUOMO et de la bourse du GIEC a joué un rôle clé dans ces avancées. En regardant vers l’avenir, nous restons engagés non seulement dans le développement de nouvelles approches computationnelles, mais aussi dans la réduction de l’écart entre les prédictions théoriques et les applications concrètes, grâce à des partenariats. En combinant rigueur scientifique, validation expérimentale et mise en œuvre pratique, nous espérons accélérer le développement de matériaux performants pour le stockage de l’énergie, et ainsi contribuer activement à un avenir énergétique plus résilient et durable.

Pedro Fernández est ingénieur agronome et chercheur argentin, spécialiste des écosystèmes forestiers secs d’Amérique du Sud. Formé à l’INTA, il poursuit ses travaux à l’Université Humboldt de Berlin, où il explore les interactions entre écologie, agronomie et sciences sociales, notamment dans le Gran Chaco. Boursier de la Fondation Cuomo entre 2019 et 2021 dans le cadre du programme du GIEC, il a ensuite bénéficié d’un soutien postdoctoral d’un an. Il a également représenté la Fondation lors de la première édition de Re.Generation, le campus d’été de la Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco.

Des ondulations insoupçonnées

Les enchaînements de causes et d’effets qui m’ont conduit à écrire ce texte sont innombrables. Je repense à mon parcours et au rôle de celles et ceux qui m’ont accompagné. Je me demande ce qui aurait bien pu arriver si je n’avais pas rencontré les bonnes personnes au bon moment, et j’imagine des multivers où ma vie aurait pris un tout autre chemin. Dois-je

chercher une explication dans mes origines, dans les heures passées à suivre des pistes d’animaux, à écouter les sons de la nature, à humer les parfums de la forêt ? Ces souvenirs ont-ils un sens, une finalité ? C’est une question ouverte, à laquelle je n’ai pas encore su répondre avec certitude.

Ce que je peux affirmer sans hésiter, c’est que, depuis aussi loin que je me souvienne, j’ai été façonné par les forêts sèches du Chaco — des lieux autrefois inhospitaliers, des territoires sauvages pleins d’épines, avec des fleurs et des fruits cachés dans certains recoins. Ces terres étaient habitées par les récits et les légendes des communautés autochtones et des éleveurs criollos.

Depuis l’âge de deux ans, mon père m’emmenait chasser dans ces forêts le week-end, comme son propre père l’avait fait un demi-siècle plus tôt, à la lisière de la ville, et comme son grand-père avant lui, dans une dehesa espagnole. Marcher en silence, observer les arbres, jouer dans l’eau des rivières : c’était tout ce que je faisais pendant mon temps libre d’enfant. En grandissant, à l’adolescence, j’ai vu l’expansion agricole ravager les paysages que j’avais autrefois arpentés. Il ne me sera pas facile de transmettre ce patrimoine à mes filles. Nombre de paysages que j’ai connus ne sont plus des forêts. C’est peut-être pour cela que je ressens ce besoin impérieux de réfléchir à la manière de les conserver, ou de les utiliser au mieux.

J’ai étudié l’agronomie, obtenu mon diplôme avec mention, puis commencé à travailler, en gardant toujours à l’esprit que mon but n’était pas de suivre le paradigme agronomique de Borlaug, axé sur la lutte contre le théorème malthusien en produisant toujours plus pour nourrir une planète affamée. Ce monde produit déjà tout ce qu’il faut : il nous faut désormais penser avec plus de soin à la manière de répartir cette production.

J’ai poursuivi mon parcours par un doctorat à l’INTA, le principal institut argentin d’agriculture. Mon intérêt initial portait sur les impacts des systèmes de production actuels, et

sur l’éventualité d’alternatives. C’est ainsi que j’ai découvert les systèmes sylvopastoraux. En eux — et dans le Chaco sec — j’ai trouvé une véritable opportunité d’étudier l’agroforesterie à l’échelle de milliers d’hectares mécanisés, en dehors de la logique de l’agriculture de subsistance qu’on observe souvent sous les tropiques, où ces systèmes sont certes viables, mais sans effet décisif sur la production alimentaire. Cette recherche a été soutenue par une bourse du GIEC, octroyée par la Fondation Cuomo.

Ce fut ma première rencontre avec Madame Maria Elena Cuomo et Monsieur Francisco Diaz. Grâce à leur appui, tout est devenu plus simple. Cette bourse m’a permis de visiter plus fréquemment mes sites d’étude, de mieux financer les trajets de plusieurs centaines de kilomètres depuis chez moi, et de réaliser les analyses nécessaires à une thèse comprenant trois publications scientifiques significatives. Ceux d’entre nous qui font de la recherche dans les pays en développement ne s’inquiètent pas uniquement des questions scientifiques : nous nous demandons aussi s’il nous sera matériellement possible de mener à bien nos travaux dans un environnement plein de contraintes.

— et d’identifier, de manière constructive, comment dialoguer avec les différents acteurs pour produire autrement.

Aujourd’hui, je suis à Berlin, à l’Université Humboldt, où j’explore ces questions depuis deux ans, au sein d’un groupe de recherche dirigé par l’un des esprits les plus brillants au monde dans le domaine de la conservation des forêts sèches : Tobias Kuemmerle. Chaque jour, j’apprends de sa rigueur allemande, de son engagement et de son dévouement à sa vocation : comprendre et faire comprendre, par la science, les impacts de nos décisions sur ces écosystèmes.

Cette étape, comme mon doctorat, a été rendue possible grâce à une bourse de deux ans accordée par la Fondation Cuomo.

Je suis venu à Berlin avec mes deux filles et ma compagne. Chaque week-end, nous évoquons notre cher Chaco sec, même si nous profitons ici de la stabilité et de la liberté qu’offre cette ville — et, paradoxe, je peux y faire de la meilleure science que celle que j’aurais pu produire en Argentine.

J’ai aussi compris que l’étude des processus écologiques fondamentaux est essentielle, mais pas suffisante : il faut également comprendre comment se prennent les décisions. J’ai donc élargi mon cadre de réflexion, au-delà des sites spécifiques que j’étudiais dans le Chaco sec, pour penser à l’échelle régionale — Argentine, Paraguay, Bolivie — et même au-delà : Cerrado, Chiquitanía, Caatinga. L’élevage est une force majeure qui continue de détruire les forêts sèches du continent, avec des émissions de carbone considérables et une perte encore plus grande de biodiversité. Pourtant, cet élevage fait vivre de nombreuses familles paysannes et finance une partie des dépenses publiques. Il est crucial de séparer le bon grain de l’ivraie

Je repense encore aux chaînes causales qui m’ont mené à la Fondation Cuomo, et je n’ai toujours pas tout élucidé. J’appelle ce que je ne peux expliquer : hasard, Dieu ou destin. Mais ce que je peux comprendre et reconnaître, c’est le désir, la conviction et les efforts de nombreux êtres humains. Je vois combien la volonté de la Fondation d’aider des personnes comme moi à poursuivre leur passion au service du bien commun — et d’aider d’autres personnes, dans des situations bien plus difficiles, à mener une vie digne — a influé sur ma propre vie, sur ce que nous savons aujourd’hui du Chaco sec et, je l’espère, sur le quotidien d’un éleveur qui applique désormais des systèmes sylvopastoraux sans craindre de perdre en productivité, sur un gouvernement qui évalue mieux les options d’amélioration de l’élevage, et sur bien d’autres ondulations — ou chaînes causales — que je ne peux pas encore identifier.

Depuis 2012, notre contribution a rendu possible la réalisation de deux projets récents de l’association : la Maison d’Amélie et la Maison des Copains, qui offrent toutes deux des séjours de répit aux enfants et aux jeunes adultes porteurs de handicap et à leurs accompagnants.

L’association monégasque, dirigée par Madame Muriel Natali-Laure et

soutenue par la Fondation Cuomo depuis 2012, reste très active dans l’accueil d’enfants présentant des troubles de la communication socio-émotionnelle. Notre organisme l’a déjà accompagnée dans la réalisation de ses deux projets phares : la Maison d’Amélie et la Maison des Copains. Les deux structures voisines, situées à Annot, proposent séjours et activités adaptés aux enfants et adultes en situation de handicap. Le nouveau projet, la Maison de Delphine, a pu voir le jour grâce au soutien de la Fondation Cuomo.

En 2024, Monaco Disease Power a pu mettre en œuvre un nouveau projet qui lui tenait à cœur : La Maison de Delphine destinée à la colocation inclusive pour 8 jeunes adultes porteurs de handicap mental et de troubles du neuro-développement.

Ce projet a vu le jour sur la commune d’Annot, dans les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, où se trouvent déjà La Maison d’Amélie et La Maison des Copains, structures pour séjours de répit.

Le nouvel établissement accueille déjà 4 résidents : Gianni, Christopher, Kevin, Kachadour, dont les familles ont choisi pour eux un projet de vie pilote.

Monaco Disease Power remercie très chaleureusement Madame Maria Elena Cuomo, Présidente de la Fondation Cuomo, ainsi que l’ensemble du Conseil d’Administration et son équipe pour avoir financé en sa totalité l’acquisition du bien immobilier destiné à la mise en œuvre de ce projet.

MAMAN DE GIANNI

Quel bonheur et quelle belle opportunité que mon fils Gianni soit à la Maison de Delphine. Avant septembre 2024, nous avons visité beaucoup d’établissements et rien n’est à la hauteur de ce lieu. Gianni a pris son temps pour s’adapter à l’environnement et à l’encadrement. Les activités proposées en intérieur sont la cuisine, la pâtisserie ou la salle de psychomotricité ; le bassin/piscine ; et en extérieur les promenades à Annot, jouer aux boules, faire le marché le mardi matin pour les courses. Prochainement, ils feront du yoga un mercredi par mois.

MAMAN DE KACHADOUR

Je suis très heureuse que Kachadour ait trouvé un endroit où il se sent bien, il s’est fait des amis et il a des occupations. Il essaye d’apprendre les lettres, il pratique du sport et des activités qui varient, et c’est ce qui le rend heureux, lui et nous, notre famille également. Nous sommes tranquilles en nous disant que Kachadour est entre de bonnes mains et que l’on s’occupe très bien de lui. Merci à tout le monde d’avoir mis du sien pour ce projet, nos enfants s’épanouissent. Nous sommes très reconnaissants que la Maison de Delphine existe.

MAMAN DE KEVIN

Kevin a trouvé sa place au sein de La Maison de Delphine et prend plaisir dans les activités proposées. L’atelier cuisine est une excellente opportunité pour lui de développer ses compétences et d’explorer de nouveaux centres d’intérêt. Kevin continue à appliquer ce qu’il a appris à La Maison de Delphine lorsqu’il rentre le week-end en famille. C’est une belle étape vers un avenir prometteur.

…L’écriture par essence est une tendance autistique. Le poète est un autiste qui parle. L’autiste, c’est un homme nu dans une pièce vide. Il n’éclaire rien parce qu’il retient sa lumière. Mais en écrivant, il retourne sa peau et l’envers de cette peau est chamarré de couleurs splendides. L’autisme est un soleil inversé : ses rayons sont dirigés vers l’intérieur. La surface est lisse, sans ressenti ni attraits, mais l’intérieur est d’une magnificence inouïe. Tant que la personne est enclose en elle-même, rien n’irradie, ou à peine, mais quand elle arrive à s’exprimer, c’est inimaginable la splendeur qui est à l’intérieur. Comme l’autiste en se taisant, le poète s’ensevelit en écrivant : il vit une gloire interne et il est mort pour le monde.

L’édition 2024 du Tournoi Sainte Dévote s’est tenue le 20 avril. La Fondation Cuomo a apporté son soutien à cet événement sportif pour la onzième année consécutive.

La Fondation Cuomo est le plus ancien partenaire du tournoi Sainte Dévote. Grâce au soutien sans faille de la Fondation Cuomo, le tournoi est devenu le plus important évènement mondial de la catégorie U12.

Nous souhaitions depuis de nombreuses années qu’une équipe d’Inde participe à l’évènement, c’est depuis l’édition 2024 chose faite. C’était pour nous un moyen de rendre hommage aux diverses actions menées en Inde par la Fondation Cuomo et de renforcer le lien qui nous unit. Cette équipe composée d’enfants défavorisés met en avant les valeurs de partage et de solidarité que notre sport véhicule.

L’édition 2024 a également vu plus de 120 enfants porteurs de handicap participer à la matinée que nous consacrons à ce

public. Un éducateur spécialisé salarié de la Fédération intervient tout au long de l’année auprès d’IME, d’associations et de structures d’accueil en utilisant le ballon ovale comme outil pédagogique. Durant cette matinée, 230 enfants scolarisés à Monaco vont devenir les éducateurs de ce public afin de les sensibiliser au handicap et les ouvrir à ce public. Cette activité inclusive est une clef de notre évènement.

De façon plus globale, on peut dire que la Fondation Cuomo et la Fédération Monégasque de Rugby partagent les mêmes valeurs et que le tournoi Sainte Dévote est la démonstration de la réussite de cette collaboration.

Depuis 2023, la Fondation

Cuomo soutient financièrement la carrière naissante de la pianiste Stella Almondo. Cette aide, d’un montant de 76 500 €, lui permet de bénéficier d’une scolarité sur mesure adaptée à sa vie de musicienne…

En 2024, la jeune pianiste a enregistré son premier album sous le label « Naïve » et a assuré de nombreux concerts en Europe.

L’un des points saillants de cette année a été l’enregistrement et la sortie de mon tout premier album, PASSION chez Naïve/ Believe, un véritable tournant dans mon début de carrière. Les critiques ont été vraiment encourageantes, avec mention spéciale de 4 diapasons dans la revue Diapason et des éloges notamment sur France Musique, Radio Classique, Classica, ConcertoNet.com, etc.

Cette année, j’ai également eu l’honneur de devenir Young Artist Steinway & Sons. J’ai eu la chance de faire deux fois salle comble dans la mythique salle Cortot à Paris, en plus de récitals dans des lieux prestigieux tels que l’Automobile Club de France, l’Opéra de Reims, l’Abbaye de la Cambre à Bruxelles, à Cannes pour le MIDEM, à Monaco au Théâtre des Variétés pour les Amis du Printemps des Arts, à Strasbourg et au Luxembourg pour le 43e Festival de Bourglinster. Un moment particulièrement marquant fut le récital que j’ai donné le jour de mes 18 ans aux 41e Heures Musicales de Biot.

En plus de cela, la captation d’un récital à la Salle Gaveau pour Canal+, C8 et Mezzo a été une expérience enrichissante, mettant en avant mon parcours musical avec des compositeurs tels que Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Scriabine et Liszt.

J’ai également réussi mon BAC général avec mention très bien en étudiant par correspondance, prouvant que mon engagement dans mes études et ma passion pour la musique peuvent aller de pair.

Je poursuis ma carrière musicale tout en étant engagée dans mes études de 2e

année de Licence au CNSMDP et de mon Artist Diploma à L’École Normale Alfred Cortot. Cette double casquette demande une organisation importante, du sérieux et une rigueur sans faille, mais je suis déterminée à tout réussir !

Alors que je me tourne vers l’année 2025, je suis impatiente de démarrer l’enregistrement de mon deuxième album prévu au mois d’avril et de poursuivre mes concerts. Être sur scène est ce qui me plaît le plus, partager des émotions et remplir les cœurs de belle musique !

Je m’engage à poursuivre avec détermination ma deuxième année de licence au CNSMDP ainsi que mon «Artist Diploma» à L’École Normale Alfred Cortot, des années d’études qui me permettront de perfectionner mon art.

En prenant un moment de réflexion, je réalise pleinement à quel point cette première année à Paris m’a transformée. Je m’épanouis tant sur le plan artistique que personnel. J’ai pris mes marques dans cette nouvelle vie loin de ma famille, je me découvre de nouvelles compétences et je deviens autonome.

Je continue à travailler avec acharnement pour atteindre mes objectifs et honorer la confiance de ma famille, de mon pays et de la Fondation Cuomo. Votre précieuse aide me permet d’étudier sereinement et me pousse à donner le meilleur de moi-même chaque jour.

Le parcours du Dr Behki Maliba, chercheur et entrepreneur sud-africain, incarne l’engagement de la Fondation Cuomo en faveur de la recherche et de l’insertion professionnelle.

Lauréat d’une bourse de la Fondation dans le cadre du programme GIEC 2013-2015, il a soutenu en 2016 une thèse de doctorat consacrée aux effets

du CO₂ et de l’O₃ sur le rendement et la photosynthèse du Brassica napus. En 2022, la Fondation l’a de nouveau soutenu afin de poursuivre un master en management. Diplômé en juillet 2024, il a lancé à l’issue de cette formation sa propre entreprise, dédiée à la prise en charge d’étudiants universitaires. Cette nouvelle étape de la vie professionnelle du jeune universitaire est également soutenue par la Fondation Cuomo sur le plan financier.

J’aiterminé mon MBA en novembre 2023, et j’ai obtenu mon diplôme en juillet 2024. Au cours de cette formation, intégralement financée par la Fondation Cuomo, j’ai mené un projet de recherche sur la capacité d’adaptation des agriculteurs semi-commerciaux face au changement climatique. Cette étude a porté sur les stratégies adoptées par ces agriculteurs pour faire face aux évolutions climatiques, telles que l’utilisation de variétés de cultures résistantes aux maladies ou à haut rendement, la rotation des cultures pour préserver les sols, ainsi que le recours à l’eau stockée pour l’irrigation. Toutefois, des disparités notables sont apparues en matière d’accès au financement, révélant des situations économiques très diverses. Cela souligne l’importance cruciale de l’accès aux ressources financières dans les efforts d’adaptation. Malgré ces écarts, les participants ont largement partagé la conviction que les stratégies d’atténuation du changement climatique — telles que la diversification des cultures et la conservation des ressources en eau et en sol — peuvent significativement améliorer la productivité agricole.

Le projet d’aide à l’installation d’étudiants, que je mène, progresse également de manière satisfaisante. Grâce au soutien financier que vous m’avez apporté, j’ai pu surmonter plusieurs défis et poursuivre, de façon régulière, la mise en œuvre d’un modèle économiquement viable et autosuffisant à moyen terme. À ce jour, le projet avance dans la bonne direction, et je reste confiant quant à sa stabilisation à long terme, à condition de maintenir les efforts engagés.

Pour la suite, je souhaite me concentrer sur mes activités actuelles au sein de la Public Investment Corporation tout en approfondissant mes recherches dans le domaine du développement durable, en particulier afin de contribuer à la réalisation de l’Objectif de Développement Durable n°13 : lutte contre les changements climatiques*. Mon ambition est de mettre à profit les compétences acquises au cours de mes études doctorales et de mon MBA pour agir concrètement au service de la société dans laquelle je vis.

Par ailleurs, j’envisage toujours d’acquérir une exploitation agricole. Ma motivation initiale pour entreprendre un MBA était précisément de me doter des connaissances et des outils nécessaires à la gestion d’une entreprise, en particulier d’une ferme produisant des biens respectueux de l’environnement. Je travaille actuellement à réunir les financements indispensables pour concrétiser ce projet qui me tient à cœur.

SAUVEGARDE DE LA Cour royale de TIÉBÉLÉ

La Cour royale de Tiébélé est un ensemble architectural en terre, fondé au XVIe siècle. Le site témoigne de l’organisation sociale et des valeurs culturelles du peuple Kasséna, l’un des peuples les plus anciennement installéss sur le territoire burkinabè.

L’association Dizénidani, un groupement local présidé par Abatidan Casimir Nassara, lui-même habitant de la Cour royale, organise chaque année une

campagne de restauration des habitats de la Cour. Mise en place grâce à l’appui de la Fondation Cuomo, cette initiative qui forme les futures générations à prendre en charge leur patrimoine, a permis, durant une décennie, de garantir la pérennité du site. La contribution de la Fondation Cuomo a ainsi été décisive durant la longue phase de délibération durant laquellele site a été inscrit sur la liste indicative de l’UNESCO (20122024).

ASSOCIATION « DIZENIDANI » POUR LA PROMOTION

ÉDUCATIVE DE TIÉBÉLÉ

L’année

2024 a été une année d’aboutissement et de concrétisation pour nos activités. Particulièrement concernant le concours Dora, nous pouvons être fiers d’avoir contribué pendant une dizaine d’années, avec bien sûr le soutien de la Fondation Cuomo, à la protection et la conservation de la Cour royale de Tiébélé. Nous sommes des acteurs incontestables de l’inscription de cette Cour qui a été effective en 2024, après 10 ans d’intervention.

Dans les conclusions de notre rapport sur le concours Dora 2024, nous avions eu à marquer ceci : « Nous avons foi que la 10e édition du Concours se déroulera dans une cour royale inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO ». C’était en juin et un mois plus tard, effectivement, la bonne nouvelle de l’inscription est tombée. Cette activité et votre soutien ont énormément contribué à la rédaction des rapports finaux du comité scientifique national de l’UNESCO.

Notre projet a démontré qu’il y a la transmission en ce qui concerne ces valeurs ancestrales. Ce projet a contribué à former environ 800 jeunes filles et à restaurer annuellement les maisons de la Cour royale pour la préservation de cette architecture. L’année 2024 a démontré que la Fondation ne s’est pas trompée quand elle a choisi de soutenir ce projet culturel. C’est une victoire commune et les habitants de Tiébélé en sont très fiers.

Pour ce faire, notre association a établi une attestation de reconnaissance à l’endroit de la Fondation que nous allons vous faire parvenir bientôt. Nous marquerons donc une pause avec cette 10e édition pour témoigner notre reconnaissance pour votre soutien et célébrer ce succès.

Pour ce qui est de l’activité du camp de vacances, qui était à sa 10e édition, c’est aussi une concrétisation en ce sens que nous avons pu observer les résultats de nos campagnes annuelles de reboisement de ces dernières années.

La première promotion des participants du camp est aujourd’hui en deuxième année d’université — pour ceux qui ont pu suivre normalement leur cursus scolaire.

Plus de 1000 enfants ont pu bénéficier du camp vacances. La 10e édition de 2024 a été exceptionnelle parce qu’elle a permis de prendre en charge une quinzaine d’enfants des Personnes Déplacées Internes (PDI) à cause de l’insécurité due aux attaques terroristes.

En un mot, nous pouvons dire que l’année 2024 marque 10 ans de notre partenariat avec la Fondation Cuomo. Plus de 20 projets soutenus, environ 800 jeunes filles formées, la transmission des valeurs ancestrales à travers le concours Dora, plus de 1000 bénéficiaires du camp vacances, inscription de la Cour royale au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, des résultats environnementaux sur le terrain avec la plantation d’arbres, etc.

Originaire de la région du Sahel, au Burkina Faso, j’ai été témoin de la dégradation progressive de la situation dans mon pays. Ce contexte difficile m’a contraint à réduire mes activités académiques sur le terrain et à accueillir certains de mes proches, devenus Personnes Déplacées Internes (PDI), dans la capitale burkinabè.

À l’origine, je souhaitais accueillir des jeunes en rupture sociale et mener des actions d’autonomisation alimentaire et énergétique, et de réinsertion. Face aux conflits armés et aux déplacements de population, j’ai été amené à redéfinir mes priorités.

J’ai souhaité contribuer à la compréhension et à la résolution des défis posés par les conflits dans la région du Sahel en m’inscrivant au programme de doctorat en Développement régional et territorial à l’Université de Rimouski au Canada à automne 2022. Ma recherche se concentre sur les impacts des conflits sur l’agropastoralisme dans le Sahel au Burkina Faso au cours des dix dernières années.

Grâce au soutien financier de la fondation Cuomo, j’ai soutenu mon projet de thèse le 15 octobre 2024 et attends l’approbation éthique avant de commencer la collecte des données sur le terrain burkinabè, en vue de la rédaction de ma thèse.

LA MAISON D’ÉDUCATION DE LA LÉGION D’HONNEUR DE SAINT-DENIS

Les maisons d’éducation de la Légion d’honneur sont une institution bicentenaire fondée par Napoléon Ier en 1805 et dédiée à l’instruction des descendantes de décorés. Avec 100% de mentions au brevet et presque autant au baccalauréat, les maisons d’éducation se classent parmi les meilleurs établissements français.

Après son appui au projet « Mémoire de l’honneur », dédié à la numérisation et à la sauvegarde des archives centenaires de la grande chancellerie de la Légion d’honneur, la Fondation concentre désormais son soutien sur l’éducation : il s’agit d’offrir aux lycéennes de la maison d’éducation de Saint-Denis un cadre de vie favorable à leur réussite et à l’éclosion d’idées en résonance avec les enjeux d’aujourd’hui.

Institution publique unique en son genre, la grande chancellerie de la Légion d’honneur résonne par ses valeurs, ses activités et sa mission fondamentale avec la philosophie et les causes soutenues par la Fondation Cuomo.

Les valeurs défendues par la grande chancellerie sont celles de l’ordre de la Légion d’honneur qu’elle sert : mérite, altruisme et dignité humaine. Toutes sont partagées avec la Fondation Cuomo, engagée dans le développement de la jeunesse et de la culture.

Elles constituent par ailleurs le fil rouge entre les activités de la grande chancellerie qui se sont diversifiées avec les ans et peuvent paraître a priori hétérogènes. Le rôle premier d’administration de la Légion d’honneur s’est élargi au fur et à mesure de leur création à celle des plus hautes distinctions nationales qui récompensent elles aussi le service de l’intérêt général : Médaille militaire, ordre national du Mérite, Médaille nationale de reconnaissance aux victimes du terrorisme.

Voulues par Napoléon, tout comme la Légion d’honneur, les maisons d’éducation accueillent les descendantes de décorés du collège aux classes post-bac. Elles représentent aujourd’hui, au regard du personnel qui s’y consacre, l’activité principale de la grande chancellerie dont elles dépendent directement.

Enfin, le musée de l’institution retrace mille ans d’histoire des distinctions honorifiques à travers le monde et met en avant les parcours exemplaires d’hommes et de femmes décorés pour inspirer vertueusement ses visiteurs.

Récompenses nationales, éducation et culture : de ces trois activités de la grande chancellerie, les deux dernières sont similaires

aux projets qu’encourage la Fondation Cuomo. Mais il existe entre les deux organisations un lien plus fort encore qui repose sur une conviction commune, celle de la nécessité de transmettre, des valeurs, des connaissances, une culture.

Ainsi la Fondation Cuomo, fidèle et d’une immense générosité, permet-elle à la grande chancellerie de remplir cette mission fondamentale. En contribuant au projet Mémoire de l’honneur, elle sauvegarde les archives des décorés et fait rayonner leurs mérites. En donnant largement pour la modernisation du bâtiment scolaire de la maison d’éducation de Saint-Denis, elle favorise dans la durée les conditions d’étude de ses élèves.

Construite sur un solide socle commun, la relation entre la grande chancellerie de la Légion d’honneur et la Fondation Cuomo s’est muée avec les années et les projets partagés en partenariat de confiance.

Faustine Blanchard est une jeune et talentueuse chanteuse qui bénéficie d’une bourse d’études de la Fondation Cuomo.

À l’occasion d’un concert donné à Paris par les demoiselles des maisons d’éducation de la Légion d’Honneur, la voix de Faustine Blanchard n’a laissé personne indifférent. Suite à l’obtention de son baccalauréat avec mention, Faustine Blanchard a reçu le soutien de la Fondation Cuomo pour intégrer le prestigieux Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, où elle poursuit actuellement des études de chant.

Tout se passe à merveille pour moi à Bruxelles, et j’ai vraiment l’impression de bien progresser. Je retrouve enfin un rythme plus calme après plusieurs semaines de répétitions intenses pour La Flûte Enchantée de Mozart, que nous avons montée au conservatoire, et représenté quatre fois pour le public bruxellois…

C’était d’ailleurs une première pour le conservatoire : monter un opéra quasiment complet, réunissant chanteurs, orchestre et élèves en direction. Le tout dans une organisation digne d’un vrai théâtre : répétitions intensives, mises en scène précises, loges, maquillage, costumière qui ajuste les costumes à la dernière minute avant l’entrée en scène… une immersion totale !

C’était ma toute première expérience scénique avec un orchestre — une dimension qui a donné une profondeur incroyable à la musique et à l’interprétation. Le but de ce projet était de lancer les élèves en fin de master, tout en permettant aux novices comme nous de les fréquenter et d’apprendre à leur contact. Ce fut une expérience extrêmement enrichissante qui m’a permis d’observer le travail des chanteurs plus avancés, comprendre les exigences d’un tel projet, participer aux répétitions quotidiennes… Je suis très heureuse et fière d’avoir pu y participer, dès ma première année.

Cela me donne encore plus envie de poursuivre et de me dépasser.

Je vous remercie sincèrement pour votre soutien, sans lequel je ne pourrais pas vivre ces expériences avec autant de dévouement et de sérénité.

Une année durant, des sorties régulières pour la recherche de cohésion et le partage de valeurs humaines fondamentales ont permis l’aboutissement d’une expédition au caractère hors-normes.

L’équipe d’expédition de l’association niçoise Exploits sans frontière a accompli avec succès sa huitième mission dans les contrées himalayennes.

Depuis 2023, l’association a trouvé un nouvel élan grâce au soutien financier de la Fondation Cuomo. Composée de médecins secouristes, d’infirmiers et de bénévoles, l’équipe a accompagné cinq jeunes en situation de handicap pour une nouvelle aventure solidaire au cœur du Ladakh, entamée le 1er août 2024.

Exploits sans frontière a monté ce projet dans la lignée de ses actions d’aide à l’éducation pour des écoles de haute montagne dans la région du Ladakh, au nord de l’Inde.

Un projet largement porté par le soutien renouvelé de la Fondation Cuomo.

Une année durant, des sorties régulières visant à renforcer la cohésion et le partage de valeurs humaines fondamentales ont permis l’aboutissement d’une expédition exceptionnelle.

Ce huitième projet a emmené cinq jeunes, entourés d’une équipe d’encadrants, au dépassement de soi par le défi sportif de l’ascension d’un sommet de plus de 6000 mètres d’altitude.

L’aventure a voulu que le climat empêche l’atteinte du sommet tant convoité, mais dans

une lutte pour une progression en groupe, c’est l’apprentissage de l’entraide, de la solidarité et de la tolérance qui a été mis en valeur.

Enfin, par la distribution de matériel scolaire aux écoles de Dah-Hannou et de Phiang, par le soutien financier pour la rénovation de l’école de Tarou, un sentiment essentiel de partage a couronné notre périple.

Une expérience unique que chacun des participants tiendra en mémoire pour la vie.

L’année 2024 a été marquée par de bons résultats aux examens, la mise en œuvre de projets environnementaux, de nombreuses activités extrascolaires, ainsi que par l’amélioration des infrastructures.

ÉTAT DU TAMIL NADU - Inde

Depuis 1999, bien avant la création officielle de la Fondation Cuomo telle que nous la connaissons aujourd’hui, ses fondateurs, Alfredo et Maria Elena Cuomo, se sont engagés dans le domaine de l’éducation en Inde du Sud.

En vingt-trois ans, la Fondation a construit sept complexes scolaires, accompagnant des générations d’élèves dans leur parcours éducatif et leur formation de futurs citoyens. Certaines de ces écoles ont été édifiées ex nihilo, d’autres ont été développées à partir de structures existantes. Aujourd’hui encore, la Fondation continue de les accompagner au quotidien, à travers l’attribution de bourses d’études ou le soutien administratif, notamment pour la prise en charge des salaires du personnel enseignant.

Je vous écris pour vous exprimer ma profonde gratitude pour l’impact extraordinaire que la bourse de la Fondation Cuomo a eu sur ma vie. Votre soutien indéfectible m’a non seulement permis d’accéder à une éducation de qualité, mais il a également ouvert la voie à une carrière épanouissante et à la construction d’une famille aimante.

L’obtention de la bourse de la Fondation Cuomo a marqué un tournant décisif dans mon parcours. Votre confiance en mon potentiel et votre aide généreuse m’ont offert l’opportunité de poursuivre des études qui, autrement, m’auraient été inaccessibles. La qualité de l’enseignement que j’ai reçu et les expériences vécues ont été véritablement transformatrices : elles m’ont permis d’élargir mes horizons, d’acquérir des compétences précieuses et de bâtir des bases solides pour mon avenir.

Aujourd’hui, je travaille en tant que gestionnaire de comptes pour une entreprise britannique, LDRA, où je suis responsable de l’ensemble des activités commerciales pour l’État du Tamil Nadu. Je me suis également récemment marié, et je me permets de joindre quelques photos de mon mariage.

Je m’appelle Suresh Kumar Stalin et je suis originaire de Kovalam, près de Chennai, en Inde. J’ai effectué ma scolarité à la St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School de Kovalam, où j’ai obtenu d’excellents résultats aux examens finaux, terminant premier de mon établissement en classe de terminale.

mon diplôme d’études secondaires supérieures en 2009 à la Kovalam St. School.

Malgré ces résultats prometteurs, j’ai rencontré des difficultés pour poursuivre des études supérieures, venant d’une famille de la classe moyenne inférieure. Mon père, ferrailleur de profession, ne disposait pas des ressources nécessaires pour m’inscrire dans une université réputée.

À cette période, en 2012, j’ai eu la chance d’être sélectionné pour le programme de bourses de la Fondation Cuomo. Ce soutien m’a permis de financer une partie de mes frais de scolarité et de mener à bien mon diplôme de premier cycle en génie électrique et électronique. Aujourd’hui, je travaille au centre technique et de service de Visteon, à Chennai — une entreprise internationale du secteur automobile — où je cumule sept ans d’expérience en tant que responsable de la sécurité fonctionnelle du matériel.

Je souhaite exprimer toute ma gratitude aux membres de la Fondation Cuomo qui m’ont permis de poursuivre mes études supérieures grâce à leur programme de bourses. Grâce à ce soutien, j’ai obtenu une licence en physique au Women’s Christian College, puis un master en physique à l’Université d’Annamalai. J’ai ainsi pu rendre fiers mes parents, étant la première génération de diplômés de ma famille.

Sans cette bourse, il m’aurait été impossible de poursuivre mes études dans des établissements de renom. Après l’obtention de mon diplôme, j’ai commencé ma carrière chez Cognizant India en tant que jeune diplômée, avant d’avoir l’opportunité, après mon mariage, de rejoindre Cognizant Ireland.

Aujourd’hui, je vis en Irlande avec ma famille.

Aide aux victimes du cyclone Fengal

Le cyclone Fengal, qui a touché terre près de Chennai et de Puducherry le 30 novembre 2024, a provoqué des pluies diluviennes et des vents violents dans les districts côtiers du nord du Tamil Nadu. La tempête a inondé les zones de basse altitude, perturbé les transports et gravement affecté les moyens de subsistance de nombreux habitants de Chennai et de Chingleput.

En réponse à une demande du diocèse de Chingleput, la Fondation Cuomo a alloué 11 400 € pour soutenir les efforts de secours. Le 21 décembre 2024, la Fondation, en collaboration avec le diocèse, a distribué des articles de première nécessité — notamment des vêtements, des denrées alimentaires et des couvertures — à plus de 1 000 personnes vulnérables dans 10 villages sinistrés.

Des représentants de l’évêché de Chingleput, parmi lesquels le révérend père Anand Damien, le révérend père Esthakiyus (vicaire général) et le révérend père Louis Rayar (vicaire judiciaire), ont participé à la distribution. Le représentant indien de la Fondation Cuomo, Monsieur Charles Kulandai, ainsi que Monsieur Roshan Susairaj (boursier) et Monsieur Prabhakaran S. (ex-boursier et urbaniste au sein du gouvernement du Tamil Nadu), étaient également présents.

C’est la deuxième année consécutive que la Fondation Cuomo soutient les opérations de secours aux victimes des inondations dans le district de Chingleput, témoignant ainsi de son engagement constant à venir en aide aux populations frappées par des catastrophes naturelles.

Suite à des complications de santé, le jeune Roshan Susairaj est aujourd’hui appareillé d’une prothèse fémorale. La Fondation a commencé à contribuer au rétablissement du jeune garçon en 2013, alors âgé de 10 ans…

L’aide couvre aujourd’hui les dépenses régulières de santé, les frais de formation et ceux de ses activités extrascolaires qui, ensemble, participent assurément à

l’amélioration de sa santé physique et à son épanouissement personnel.

Après avoir terminé sa scolarité à Chennai, Roshan s’est inscrit en faculté des sciences à sa ville natale et a obtenu avec succès une licence en informatique. Cet exploit, doublé de la réussite de l’examen IELTS, lui a permis d’intégrer une université londonienne, où le jeune homme, aujourd’hui âgé de 21 ans, poursuit un master.

Cela fait maintenant douze ans que la Fondation Cuomo m’accompagne, et son soutien a changé ma vie.

Je me souviens qu’en 2013, la Fondation m’a offert ma première jambe artificielle. Au début, j’avais du mal à communiquer avec Madame Elena Cuomo (que j’appelle « Maman ») et les autres membres de la Fondation. Enfant, je ne comprenais pas à quel point l’anglais pouvait être important dans mon développement. Mais petit à petit, j’ai commencé à apprendre, ne serait-ce que pour pouvoir échanger avec ceux qui m’aidaient. Et plus tard, en voyageant, en découvrant d’autres pays, j’ai compris la vraie valeur de cette langue. Grâce à la Fondation, j’ai pu progresser en anglais pour construire mon avenir.

En 2023, j’ai obtenu ma licence en informatique avec mention, et cette même année, j’ai eu la chance de partir un an à Londres pour perfectionner mon anglais et

préparer mon master. Pendant tout ce temps, la Fondation m’a soutenu, comme elle l’a toujours fait.

Ce voyage m’a permis de mieux me connaître. J’ai compris que je pouvais être indépendant, que je pouvais me débrouiller seul. À Londres, j’ai rencontré des gens venus du monde entier, j’ai découvert de nouvelles cultures et créé des liens forts. Je sais que ces amitiés me serviront pour l’avenir.

En 2024, j’ai terminé mes cours de langues, j’ai passé l’IELTS, et j’ai été accepté à l’université de mes rêves, toujours à Londres.

Je suis profondément reconnaissant à la Fondation Cuomo pour tout ce qu’elle a fait pour moi.

Faustina Hanna est la plus récente bénéficiaire d’une

bourse individuelle offerte par la Fondation Cuomo.

Originaire de Chennai, dans le sud de l’Inde, où la Fondation est active depuis vingt-trois ans, Faustina a exprimé son souhait de poursuivre des études supérieures en génie informatique. La rigueur et la sincérité de sa demande ont alors retenu l’attention de la Fondation Cuomo.

Dans le contexte social indien, le désir d’émancipation d’une jeune femme issue d’un milieu modeste n’étant jamais anodin, nous avons décidé de l’accompagner dans la réalisation de ses rêves.

J’aile plaisir de vous annoncer que j’ai réussi mes examens pratiques de décembre en physique et en BEEE (Basic Electrical and Electronic Engineering).

J’ai aussi participé à un concours appelé « Ideathon », durant lequel notre équipe a travaillé ensemble pour imaginer des idées innovantes autour des capteurs et des actionneurs. C’est dans ce cadre que nous avons développé un nouveau concept pour la gestion des fuites.

J’aimerais aussi vous parler d’un événement important à venir : une conférence internationale organisée par notre école d’ingénieurs en 2025. Cette conférence permettra aux étudiants de présenter leurs idées innovantes, en solo ou en équipe, devant un public international composé d’experts et d’étudiants venus d’autres universités, y compris de l’étranger. Des certificats de participation seront remis aux participants. J’ai bien l’intention d’y participer, seul ou en équipe, afin de présenter notre travail et de recueillir des retours précieux de la part des professionnels.

Je tiens à exprimer toute ma gratitude à la Fondation Cuomo pour son soutien à travers la bourse d’études qu’elle m’a accordée. Cela m’a permis de poursuivre mes objectifs académiques avec sérénité.

CONCOURS INTERNATIONAL DE PIANO ‘ROMA’

La Fondation Cuomo est le principal partenaire de l’« Associazione Culturale Fryderyk Chopin » (AFC), fondée à Rome en 1987 par le Maestro Marcella Crudeli. L’association organise chaque année le concours international de piano « ROMA ».

L’événement phare de l’AFC, le concours de piano « Roma », réunit chaque automne dans la Ville Éternelle, une centaine de jeunes pianistes internationaux. L’édition 2024 du concours a marqué son trente-troisième anniversaire.

Le soutien de la Fondation Cuomo au Concours International de Piano « Roma », fondé et dirigé par la pianiste Marcella Crudeli, se poursuit depuis vingt ans dans un engagement commun en faveur de la jeunesse. Depuis 1990, environ 3 500 pianistes représentant 81 pays se sont présentés à ce prestigieux concours.

La 33e édition a rassemblé une centaine de candidats issus de 23 pays répartis sur trois continents, dont la qualité artistique a été particulièrement remarquée par le jury international, présidé par le Maestro Marcella Crudeli.

Le concours a également permis de mettre en dialogue diverses cultures musicales, dans le cadre enchanteur du cloître historique de San Giovanni Battista dei Genovesi, ainsi que lors

de la soirée de gala, avec le concert des lauréats et la cérémonie de remise des prix organisée dans l’antique Oratoire del Caravita. À cette occasion, les pianistes ont été accompagnés par l’Orchestre du Concours, dirigé par le Maestro Filippo Manci.

En 2024, l’Association Fryderyk Chopin est devenue la Fondation Marcella Crudeli ETS. Au-delà du concours, cette nouvelle structure entend renforcer la dimension sociale de ses activités en organisant notamment des concerts dans les établissements scolaires et d’autres lieux, en collaboration avec la Ville de Rome. Des présentations guidées des œuvres interprétées sont également régulièrement proposées, afin d’offrir au public une véritable expérience culturelle.

Nazionale di Danza (AND) — institution historique fondée par la danseuse russe Jia Ruskaja (1902–1970) — le concours « Premio Roma Danza » est placé sous le haut patronage du président de la République italienne. En vingt ans d’existence, il s’est imposé comme l’un des concours de danse les plus prestigieux sur la scène internationale.

ACCADEMIA NAZIONALE DI DANZA

Créé en 2001, le concours Premio Roma Danza bénéficie du haut patronage du président de la République italienne. En un peu plus de vingt ans, il s’est imposé comme l’un des concours de danse les plus prestigieux à l’échelle internationale. Ouvert aux étudiants de l’AND comme aux candidats extérieurs, le concours se déroule dans les lieux emblématiques de l’Académie, tels que le Teatro Grande et le Teatro Ruskaja. Chaque édition met à l’honneur, en alternance, la chorégraphie ou l’interprétation, qu’elle soit classique ou contemporaine.

Depuis 2018, une nouvelle catégorie Vidéo-danse a été introduite, afin de donner une visibilité internationale aux réalisateurs et vidéastes explorant le langage chorégraphique à travers le prisme de l’image. Cette section permet aux candidats de soumettre leurs œuvres en ligne, élargissant ainsi la portée du concours aux formes multimédias et aux nouvelles technologies.

L’édition 2024 du Premio Roma Danza s’est tenue du 14 au 19 juillet. En plus des prix officiels, le jury international a décerné plusieurs résidences chorégraphiques, renforçant la vocation du concours à soutenir l’insertion professionnelle des jeunes talents. L’un des objectifs essentiels de l’événement est en effet de valoriser les artistes émergents en leur offrant des opportunités concrètes de développement artistique et professionnel.

C’est autour de cette vision partagée qu’un partenariat fort et naturel s’est tissé entre l’Accademia Nazionale di Danza et la Fondation Cuomo, mécène principal du concours. Engagée en faveur de la jeunesse et de la culture, la Fondation partage pleinement sa mission : donner aux jeunes les moyens de réaliser leurs rêves et de faire éclore leurs

ambitions, grâce à un accompagnement à la fois concret et bienveillant.

L’édition 2024 a célébré deux axes de création chorégraphique : d’un côté, des pièces conçues pour la scène ; de l’autre, des œuvres qui explorent le dialogue entre danse et technologies numériques. Des jeunes chorégraphes venus des cinq continents ont ainsi investi le Teatro Grande de l’AND, devant un jury de directeurs de compagnies, de programmateurs et de critiques internationaux conviés par la nouvelle directrice de l’Académie, la professeure Anna Maria Galeotti. À son initiative, plusieurs résidences artistiques ont également été offertes dans les institutions représentées par ces jurés.

« I Cerchi Magici », engagée dans la promotion des arts et des traditions populaires, en particulier la musique, le théâtre et la danse. Grâce à ce partenariat, deux initiatives inclusives ont pu se consolider : un orchestre et une compagnie de théâtre, tous deux gratuits et capables d’accueillir des enfants en situation de handicap.

ITALIE

L’orchestre inclusif de l’association « I Cerchi Magici » a été créé pour offrir une éducation musicale gratuite et ouverte à tous. La compagnie de théâtre solidaire, quant à elle, est un projet ludo-éducatif qui propose aux jeunes une première expérience scénique, visant à les sensibiliser aux grandes thématiques sociétales actuelles.

ORCHESTRE INCLUSIF

En 2024, l’école de musique Arvalia de Rome, gérée par l’association I Cerchi Magici, a lancé le projet « Orchestre inclusif ». Cette initiative, qui propose une formation musicale gratuite, était initialement destinée aux préadolescents et adolescents. Mais le succès rencontré a largement dépassé les attentes : le projet a suscité l’intérêt de personnes de tous âges, originaires des quatre coins du monde.

Dans le contexte socio-culturel du XIe arrondissement de Rome, marqué par une grande diversité et par la présence de nombreuses familles en situation de précarité, l’Orchestre inclusif a pris une dimension essentielle. La musique est ainsi devenue un pont entre les cultures, un levier de développement personnel et collectif, favorisant l’intégration et le sentiment d’appartenance à une communauté unie.

Grâce à ce projet, l’école Arvalia s’est affirmée comme un véritable point de repère culturel et un espace de rassemblement dans le quartier. La mise en place d’un réseau de partenaires entre institutions publiques et privées a permis d’atteindre des objectifs

tels que l’intégration sociale, la réduction de l’isolement, la cohésion intergénérationnelle, la croissance et l’enrichissement culturel.

COMPAGNIE THÉÂTRALE SOLIDAIRE

Avec le soutien de la Fondation Cuomo, l’association I Cerchi Magici a lancé en 2024 le projet « Compagnie Théâtrale Solidaire », une initiative culturelle visant à sensibiliser les jeunes aux grands enjeux contemporains à travers le spectacle vivant. Au cœur du projet : une représentation engagée intitulée « Fais la différence : stop à la violence », destinée aux élèves de tous niveaux scolaires.

Dévoilé en décembre 2024 à Rome, le spectacle a rencontré un franc succès auprès du public. Mêlant chansons et textes parlés, il a abordé des thématiques essentielles telles que la violence envers les enfants, les personnes vulnérables, les victimes de guerre, le harcèlement scolaire, la destruction de l’écosystème et les féminicides. Chaque sujet a été traité avec délicatesse et intensité, donnant lieu à une expérience à la fois émotive et immersive, capable de susciter une réflexion sincère chez les jeunes spectateurs.

La participation active des élèves a renforcé la portée éducative du projet, les plaçant au cœur de la démarche en tant qu’acteurs et porte-voix d’un changement social positif.

Fondazione Antea

Créée en 1987 en tant qu’association et devenue fondation en 2020, Antea est dédiée à l’accompagnement des personnes en phase terminale ou atteintes de maladies incurables.

Antea apporte un soutien essentiel aux familles en détresse en offrant des soins palliatifs gratuits, soit à domicile, avec tout l’équipement médical nécessaire,

soit au sein de son établissement spécialisé, qui dispose de 30 chambres équipées selon les standards les plus modernes.

Grâce au soutien de la Fondation Cuomo, la Fondazione Antea a pu acquérir un nouveau véhicule hybride, venant renforcer son programme « Ancora più vicino », dédié à l’accompagnement à domicile des personnes en fin de vie.

Au cours de l’année 2024, grâce au soutien généreux de la Fondation Cuomo, la Fondazione Antea a pu planifier et lancer une expansion majeure de son service gratuit de soins à domicile pour les personnes atteintes de maladies incurables. Ce projet s’est concrétisé avec la mise en service d’un nouveau véhicule dédié aux activités de soins à domicile.

Le projet « Ancora più vicino », rendu possible par le don d’une voiture par la Fondation Cuomo, a marqué une étape essentielle dans notre capacité à prodiguer des soins quotidiens. Il nous a permis d’être réellement plus présents, plus réactifs et plus efficaces auprès de celles et ceux qui traversent la phase la plus fragile de leur vie.

Recevoir des soins à domicile, entouré de ses proches, de ses souvenirs et de son cadre de vie familier, constitue l’un des fondements des soins palliatifs. Pour que cela soit possible, il ne suffit pas d’avoir des professionnels hautement qualifiés : il faut aussi disposer des moyens et des outils logistiques qui rendent ces soins réellement accessibles.

Le véhicule offert – un Dacia Jogger – a, dès les premiers mois, amélioré la gestion des livraisons de médicaments, de dispositifs médicaux et de matériel d’assistance. Il permet à nos patients de rester chez eux, dans l’environnement qu’ils aiment, tout en bénéficiant de tout le soutien dont ils ont besoin.

Ce nouveau moyen de transport a apporté une véritable souplesse logistique : il a permis à nos équipes d’intervenir plus rapidement, de manière plus autonome et d’augmenter le nombre d’interventions quotidiennes. L’impact est concret : rien qu’en 2024, la Fondazione Antea a assuré plus de 27 000 visites à domicile et une moyenne de 15 livraisons quotidiennes

de fournitures médicales. Aujourd’hui, grâce au véhicule offert par la Fondation Cuomo, nos opérateurs effectuent plus de 60 livraisons par semaine – un chiffre qui ne cesse de croître.

La contribution de la Fondation Cuomo a donc un effet direct et mesurable sur la qualité des soins : des temps d’attente réduits, une plus grande réactivité en cas d’urgence, une efficacité renforcée pour nos équipes, et une logistique plus durable.

Un aspect essentiel de cette contribution est aussi son approche respectueuse de l’environnement. Le véhicule hybrdie allie faible émission de polluants et grande autonomie, ce qui en fait un choix idéal pour une utilisation quotidienne et continue. Ce geste témoigne d’une conscience écologique, sans compromis sur l’efficacité.

À chaque kilomètre parcouru, c’est un peu d’humanité qui se déplace, une attention portée, un pas vers ceux qui ont besoin de nous. La collaboration avec la Fondation Cuomo dépasse le simple cadre du soutien opérationnel : elle incarne un véritable partage de valeurs – proximité, dignité, solidarité. Pour tout cela, nous vous exprimons notre profonde et sincère gratitude. Mon objectif est de m’investir dans le domaine de la recherche clinique afin de mieux comprendre et traiter les maladies, tout en contribuant à l’identification des facteurs de risque pour améliorer la santé publique.

En 2012, Awa Gueye a subi une intervention cardiaque au CCPC de Dakar, réalisée lors d’une mission humanitaire conjointe de La Chaîne de l’Espoir et de la Fondation Cuomo. Après son rétablissement complet, la Fondation l’a accompagnée dans la poursuite de ses objectifs académiques.

Awa poursuit actuellement un master en Biologie Cellulaire et Moléculaire à l’Université de Nantes.

L’année 2024 a été particulièrement mémorable, remplie de défis mais aussi de réussites significatives. Grâce au soutien constant et aux encouragements de la Fondation Cuomo, qui reste ma principale source de motivation, j’ai eu l’immense satisfaction d’obtenir ma licence en Sciences de la Vie, parcours Biologie Cellulaire et Moléculaire, à l’Université de Nantes. Cette étape essentielle m’a permis de poursuivre mes études en master et d’ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives académiques et professionnelles.

Cette année a également été marquée par des apprentissages enrichissants, tant sur le plan théorique que pratique. Par ailleurs, j’ai réussi à finaliser mes démarches administratives pour régulariser ma présence sur le territoire français, ce qui représente une avancée décisive dans la réalisation de mes projets. Actuellement, je poursuis mes études en Master 1 BiologieSanté, spécialité Oncologie, Hématologie et Médecine Nucléaire à l’Université de Nantes. Mon objectif est de m’investir dans le domaine de la recherche clinique afin de mieux comprendre et traiter les maladies, tout en contribuant à l’identification des facteurs de risque pour améliorer la santé publique.

Je tiens à exprimer ma reconnaissance constante envers la Fondation Cuomo, dont le soutien continu a eu un impact inestimable sur ma vie personnelle et professionnelle. Grâce à votre générosité, j’ai pu surmonter des épreuves avec courage et détermination, tout en construisant un avenir prometteur.

Ladixième édition des « Itinéraires

Artistiques » de Saint-Louis (IAS/10), organisée par Ndar Création du 4 mai au 10 juin 2024, a été un succès retentissant. Nous avons atteint tous nos objectifs avec une participation exceptionnelle de jeunes artistes venus du Sénégal, des pays voisins ainsi que de la France et des États-Unis.

Candidatures et sélection

L’appel à candidatures a enregistré 57 formulaires de demande provenant de nombreux pays. Le comité de sélection a choisi d’exposer 85 œuvres parmi lesquelles :

- 16 photographies

- 8 sculptures

- 1 œuvre de design

- 57 tableaux

Les critères de sélection étaient la pertinence du thème et la qualité intrinsèque de l’œuvre.

Au total, 45 artistes ont été retenus pour exposer leurs créations.

Visiteurs et vernissage

Le vernissage qui s’est tenu le 4 mai 2024 a connu un grand succès populaire avec 307 invités présents, dont plusieurs personnalités importantes telles que M. Bacary Sarr, secrétaire d’état à la culture, aux industries créatives et au patrimoine historique. Au total, plus de 2543 visiteurs ont visité l’exposition tout au long de sa durée de 35 jours. Parmi eux :

Nous avons rendu hommage à quatre grandes figures de l’art contemporain sénégalais : Adama Sylla, Daouda Ndiaye, Amadou Dede Ly et Luis Bassene. Ce moment particulier a été très apprécié par tous les participants et visiteurs.

Ateliers et animations

Deux ateliers ont été organisés lors de cette 10ème édition. Ils se sont déroulés dans l’enceinte du Centre de Recherche et de Documentation du Sénégal (CRDS) les 11 et 12 mai 2024 et ont vu la participation de 30 élèves qui ont suivi des sessions d’initiation à la peinture et de sensibilisation aux dangers du plastique, ainsi qu’une formation en récupération du plastique à des fins de création d’objets utilitaires ou d’œuvres d’art. L’encadrement a été confié à l’artiste Samba Sarr, orfèvre en la matière, et aux Artistes Abdoukarim Fall et Moussa Koné.

Un workshop organisé le 30 mai 2024 a vu la participation d’artistes confirmés venus de Dakar et des autres régions du Sénégal, ainsi que des États-Unis, pour un échange avec de jeunes artistes de Saint-Louis.

Résultats et impact

Cette 10ème édition a démontré l’importance de ces itinéraires dans la promotion des jeunes talents artistiques et la sensibilisation aux valeurs citoyennes et environnementales. Sur les 85 œuvres exposées, six ont été vendues.

En conclusion, cette édition a confirmé la pertinence et l’impact positif des Itinéraires Artistiques de Saint-Louis.

Burkina Faso’s Royal Court of Tiébélé

Tiébélé—a distant land. An enclave of less than one square kilometre, nestled in the heart of the Sahel—a realm that is both mysterious and captivating, inhabited by age-old spirits and wondrous tales. My late husband, Alfredo Cuomo and I discovered it on the threshold of the third millennium.

From our very first encounter, the magic was palpable. This small village, structured around a royal palace whose majesty lies more in its spiritual richness than in its architectural scale, captivated us entirely. To truly enter its soul, one must be invited—welcomed past the

threshold of this Royal Court, the guardian of age-old traditions. A tangle of tiny dwellings creates a maze of winding alleys, like a living nervous system, with courtyards punctuating the space like open-air stages. And then, the walls: façades adorned with animal, vegetal, and geometric motifs—mystical formulas etched into the earth, frozen incantations invoking a world that has slipped through our fingers, we who have forgotten how to commune with the invisible.

It is a marvellous universe, straight out of an African tale, suspended in time and anchored in its own unique realm. Beneath a spotless sky and a symphony of blues, under a whitewashed light, the sweltering heat makes the air shimmer, breathing life into the mythical creatures that inhabit those earthen walls.

That day in the summer of 2007 marked the beginning of a long story, though we just didn’t know it yet. Thirty years later, the unique value of the Royal Court of Tiébélé is now

internationally recognized, as it is now listed on the coveted UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This acknowledgment is the result of a lengthy process that commenced in 2012. We fondly recall our visit to the Ministry of Culture in Ouagadougou in 2015, where we met with project leaders to support their application. That same year, during our trip to Burkina Faso to oversee our ongoing initiatives, we took the opportunity to continue our support for the annual DORA competition for a second consecutive year. The year 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of our support.

The DORA competition aims to raise awareness among younger generations regarding the importance of preserving their unique history. Over the years, it has become a significant event for ensuring the site’s sustainability. Each year, its structures are reinforced, walls are restored, paintings are refreshed, and the community gathers to share its heritage and to pass it on to its future generations.

Our annual contribution, as the sole financial partner throughout the prolonged wait for recognition, has been crucial in the journey towards the UNESCO approval. We now hope that public and international stakeholders will carry forward this important initiative.

Autism – a medical mystery, a family challenge, a societal concern

That same year, in 2014, another long-term partnership began—this time much closer to home.

Through our collaboration with the association Monaco Disease Power, we became actively involved in the field of autism, working concretely to support children and adults with mental or physical disabilities, as well as psychiatric disorders.

It is often said that autism is not a disease, but a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person perceives the world and interacts with others.

The term autism spectrum disorder (ASD) reflects the wide range of profiles, from individuals who need full-time assistance to others who are highly independent.

Public awareness of autism greatly increased thanks to Barry Levinson’s unforgettable film Rain Man, released in 1988.

This bittersweet road movie portrays two brothers—Charlie, ambitious and cynical, driven by greed, and Raymond, an autistic savant blessed with eidetic memory and extraordinary mathematical skills, yet incapable of manipulation and brimming with disarming empathy. Though Raymond’s character represents only a sliver of the autistic spectrum, the film made history as one of the first to treat autism with seriousness and humanity.

Like Raymond in this cult classic, the figure of the autistic person often acts—unwittingly— as a kind of innocent saint, a passive hero who becomes a catalyst for the emotions and transformations of those around him.

A silent guide, doesn’t he hold up a mirror to us all, challenging us to reconsider our own relationship with the world and perhaps inspiring our own inner change?

That, at least, is one of the most profound lessons we have drawn from this deeply transformative experience: supporting children and adults living with disabilities. By standing for their dignity, we fulfil our own.

As the fields of research constantly evolve, are there breakthroughs?

More practically speaking, the average person might ask: Where does research stand? Are we making progress?

Will there ever be a way to ease symptoms, or is it, like Alzheimer’s, a diagnosis that leads only to an endless, hopeless wait?

Certainly, there have been advances in the early diagnosis of autism and in promoting brain plasticity through play and physical activities. There is also growing interest in the impact of the gut microbiome on brain function—could this be a promising research avenue?

The Cuomo Foundation’s contribution is not medical; it lies in supporting those affected and their families. However, let us be honest: the cost of effective care is enormous. This entails building specialized facilities and ensuring round-the-clock staff who are not only devoted and attentive but also well-trained and informed. In other words, the gap between needs and means remains vast.

La Maison d’Amélie in Annot, is a project we actively support. Yet, it can only accommodate about fifteen children and their families—

and only during school holidays when public services are closed. While we must support such facilities wherever possible, the true solution can only emerge from medical research. Perhaps we should concentrate resources on large, recognized research centres to maximize impact and move closer to a treatment that may not cure autism but could one day allow it to be managed better, thereby making life easier for the children and adolescents living with it.

PROJECTS & GOALS

As Maria Elena Cuomo, our co-founder and president, reminds us, 2024 has been a year of deeper exploration and reflection— on our actions, our relationships with partners, and ultimately, on ourselves. Our philanthropic endeavours involve not only managing the many requests for support we receive but also continually reassessing our approaches to them.

One of the first challenges we always encounter is the wide range of meanings people attach to the term “project”.

For the philosopher, writer and activist Simone de Beauvoir “Desire is what renders the desirable, and it is the project that establishes the goal.” The novelist Roger Nimier remarked, “A man without projects is the enemy of the human race.”

The Larousse dictionary defines it simply “A goal that one sets out to achieve.”

We have made it a priority in nearly all our discussions to clarify these definitions with our partners, working together to build a common understanding of goals, necessary actions, and resources. This collaborative effort ensures that all our initiatives are directed towards those we hope to help.

While I won’t explore the complete project cycle as outlined in management schools, a critical aspect of sound project management is evaluation. However, most of the requests we receive, do not adequately address this aspect, making it a sensitive topic during discussions with our partners.

We must also recognize the natural resistance to change—a challenge we all face. It’s tempting to believe that “others” need to change, yet many institutions cling to outdated practices, undermining their responsiveness and innovation.

This leads us back to the essence of partnership. For the Cuomo Foundation, we have a duty to ensure that every euro is allocated

as effectively as possible. It is the responsibility of those active on the ground to demonstrate this regularly and methodically.

These operational realities highlight areas where philanthropy can—and must—improve. To tackle today’s complex societal challenges, the public and private sectors will need to collaborate more closely and support each other’s efforts.

Despite these obstacles, in 2024, we successfully supported 2,500 schoolchildren with their academic journeys, assisted 61 students in higher education and research, enabled 60 artists in expressing and developing their art, and funded 24 initiatives aimed at integrating the most vulnerable in society.

Since 2013, when the Cuomo Foundation established a trilateral agreement with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the IPCC, it has actively participated in the biennial IPCC Scholarship Programme, which funds research on current and future environmental issues.

The Cuomo Foundation funded seven scholars in the sixth cohort (2021-2023) who completed their PhD theses on schedule.

The Cuomo Foundation selected four new research scholarship recipients in 2023, who will be sponsored for two years (2023-2025).

FILLING THE GAP – SIGNATURES OF ‘INFORMAL’ ADAPTATION RESPONSES TRANSFORMING SOCIALENVIRONMENTAL COASTAL SYSTEMS IN INDIA

TheIPCC Scholarship, supported by the Cuomo Foundation, was pertinent for my climate change adaptation research located in India. Conducting primary research in the global South is significantly challenging, but fundamentally important to fill the glaring knowledge gaps from these under studied geographies. This scholarship helped collect vital information about an ongoing phenomena of aquaculture land transitions which is likely to have widespread and long-lasting implications for millions of people and places. This short reflection outlines what the funds enabled me to accomplish, and what are the potential intellectual contributions and broader impacts of this fund through this research.

Research objective

The research aims to understand the spatial patterns, household-level drivers, and system-level consequences of aquaculture land transitions in coastal India.

Intellectual merit and broader impact of the research

Recent reports and qualitative studies from various South and South-East Asian countries suggest that storm surges (environmental shock) and coastal salinity (environmental stress) are driving people to shift from rice cultivation to aquaculture, however, this relationship has not been established empirically. This interdisciplinary research contributes to the fundamental knowledge about the spatial patterns, drivers, and social and environmental outcomes of aquaculture transitions, with attention to the role of environmental change as a driver of land change and household vulnerabilities. The study advances our knowledge of climate change adaptation pathways and irreversible land transformations contributing to the emerging literature on system regime shifts. The study aligns with the global call set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) seeking to address maladaptation and operationalize climate-resilient development pathways urgently.

With this research, I present aquaculture land change as a form of climate-change-driven loss and damage contributing to the global climate policy debates. I urge reimagining disaster recovery policies that currently prioritize short-term infrastructure reconstruction over long-term environmental and social losses, and sustainable aquaculture policies to be more socio-environmentally holistic.

Coastal communities and environments, including those beyond India, will be the ultimate beneficiaries of this research. The research will produce and publicly share a unique compendium on aquaculture, including

spatial data and anonymized household surveys, especially useful for data-poor contexts. As a researcher with over ten years of field experience in coastal India and as an IPCC Scholar 202325, I am well positioned to integrate the research findings into local practices and the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report Working Group II. Apart from journal articles, I will share policy briefs, blogs, and case studies via websites like regimeshift.org to reach wider practice audiences. I also trained seven women from local areas of the study to work with me on interdisciplinary methods, with the hope to create local changemakers in the future. A short film and a graphic anthology in the local language are respectively aimed at taking the stories to wider audiences and influencing local actors’ behaviour beyond the project lifetime.

Fund utilization

The funds were utilized to collect first-of-its kind primary data without which this research would not have been possible. The following are the five forms in which valuable primary data were collected:

1. A large-scale social survey of over 1300 agriculturist and aquaculturist households across three states of India, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu. Such a survey has never been conducted in the past, which is providing deep insights into the specific reasons why some agriculturists are converting to aquaculture, why others are not, and what have been the experiences of those who are converting.

2. Soil and water quality data for about 500 points (113 soil and 275 water) in a district of Odisha where aquaculture is becoming widespread. This dataset is unique in the Indian context and has enabled developing a remote-sensing and machine learning based index for identifying soils too saline for growing rice, in the current as well as past periods.

3. Focus group discussions with over 30 groups of women, farmers, and landless labour. These insights will help go deeper into the specific experiences and consequences faced by marginalized social groups, to assess whether this livelihood conversion is adaptive or maladaptive.

4. Key informant Interviews with 53 academics, scientists, policymakers, and practitioners involved with aquaculture industry at different levels – local, district, state, national and international. This is helping theorize and make the research findings relevant for policymaking and greater impact.

5. Audio-video material which will enable making a short film to take the stories of the people on the coast to wider audiences.

UNDERSTANDING CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON HAPPINESS THROUGH THE CASE OF BHUTAN’S PURSUIT OF GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS

Iamdeeply honoured and grateful to be a recipient of the IPCC PhD Scholarship 2024, generously supported by the Cuomo Foundation. This prestigious scholarship has been instrumental in advancing my research on the impact of climate change on human happiness, with a focus on Bhutan’s pursuit of Gross National Happiness. However, beyond financial support, what truly sets the Cuomo Foundation apart is its unwavering commitment to fostering meaningful relationships with its scholars and driving real change in the world.

As part of this scholarship, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Monaco in November 2024 where the Cuomo Foundation graciously hosted me and my wife. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and kindness. The Foundation took us to their office, where we met their dedicated and passionate team. Their hospitality and genuine interest in our work created an atmosphere of encouragement and support

that went far beyond what one might expect from a scholarship provider. What left an indelible mark on me was the personal attention and care extended by Ms. Maria Elena Cuomo, the President of the Foundation. She took the time to engage with us personally, making us feel valued not just as scholars, but as part of a larger community striving for a better world. Her grace, kindness, and dedication to meaningful change were truly inspiring.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Cuomo Foundation is its long-term vision. They made it clear that their support does not end with the scholarship but extends far beyond, fostering lifelong relationships with their fellows. They warmly encouraged us to submit projects—now or in the future—that align with their mission of tackling climate change and creating a more sustainable world. TOPIC CLIMATE FEEDBACK OF WETLAND TRANSFORMATION AND THE MANAGEMENT OF CREATED WETLAND

TheAs a mother in STEM and someone from a developing country deeply affected by climate change, I am incredibly grateful for the financial support provided to pursue my PhD research.

past year has been a significant period of advancement for my PhD studies, which the Cuomo Foundation supported. With their funding, I could finish much of my fieldwork in Atlantic Canada, where I completed crucial data collection. I evaluated the impact of prescribed drawdown on sediment carbon stocks and greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes of created marsh wetlands (Fig 1). We found that draining a created wetland as a management practice has a minor impact on climate warming. Over the 150-day study period, the average methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions correspond to a loss of approximately 3.9 10-2 g C m² and 7.5 10-5 g N m², respectively. Last summer, I mapped the vegetation of these wetlands, where collaborators used a drone equipped with a high-resolution multispectral camera to collect imagery from the five created wetlands (Fig 2). Currently, we are analyzing the imagery utilizing eCognition software. Our goal is to determine the area of the dominant vegetation types and open water across the five

created wetlands. This analysis will provide a comprehensive map and valuable insights into these wetland areas’ ecological characteristics and biodiversity. All this work could not have been possible without the partnership with the Cuomo Foundation.

As a mother in STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] and someone from a developing country deeply affected by climate change, I am incredibly grateful for the financial support provided to pursue my PhD research. This funding has allowed me to focus on my studies without financial worries and empowered me to contribute to science. As a woman managing family responsibilities, the support I’ve been receiving allows me to balance my studies with caring for my loved ones. I feel honoured and grateful to be part of this big Cuomo scientist family.

DENSITY LI-S BATTERIES TO POWER

As a recipient of the Cuomo Foundation and IPCC scholarship, this past year has been transformative in advancing solutions for sustainable energy storage - a critical challenge in our global transition to renewable energy. The opportunity to contribute to this field, particularly from a materials engineering perspective, has been both inspiring and meaningful, especially considering the opportunities that arise from diversifying our energy matrix with renewable sources, which can enhance energy security while supporting environmental preservation.

Our most significant breakthrough this year came in advancing Li-S battery technology, which promises approximately six times higher energy density than current Li-ion batteries while reducing environmental impact by replacing expensive and polluting cathode materials. Our computational study, published in Applied Surface Science, revealed how Ni2P surfaces can effectively solve one of the key challenges in Li-S batteries - the shuttle effect. The detailed characterization of the Ni2 P (0001) surface demonstrated

optimal adsorption characteristics for lithium polysulfides, with Ni sites showing particularly promising catalytic activity. These findings provide clear pathways for practical Li-S battery improvements and underscore the potential for computational methods in accelerating materials development.

We’ve also made substantial progress in developing computational tools for materials discovery. Our crystall package represents a simple yet powerful approach to identifying promising materials, leveraging millions of pre-calculated structures to generate and evaluate new material candidates. The implementation of structural descriptors and clustering techniques has proven particularly effective in identifying unique materials configurations, with applications ranging from advanced batteries to green fuels such as H2 - the latter being particularly important for applications requiring longer storage periods and higher power output.

Another highlight of this year was the opportunity to visit the Cuomo Foundation headquarters and attend the 17th Annual Award for Planetary Health ceremony in Monaco. This experience provided invaluable exposure to other IPCC scholars and their innovative projects across different disciplines. The interaction with fellow scholars has reinforced the importance of our work in materials engineering and how it connects with broader global efforts in climate change mitigation. While each scholar approaches the climate challenge from different angles - from policy to ecology - our collective goal remains the same: developing sustainable solutions for a better future.

Being part of this global community of scholars and researchers working toward sustainable solutions has been deeply motivating. While our current focus has been on computational methods and tools development, our ultimate goal extends beyond software implementation. We aspire to see the

materials we identify deployed in practical systems, from advanced batteries to green fuels storage facilities, with joint-experimental works already showing promising results. This transition from computational discovery to realworld implementation is crucial for realizing the full potential of our research in improving energy security and economic competitiveness through advanced energy technologies.

The progress we’ve made has significantly enhanced our research capabilities, allowing us to tackle increasingly complex materials systems and the support from the Cuomo Foundation and IPCC scholarship has been instrumental in advancing this work. As we move forward, we remain committed not only to developing new

computational approaches but also to bridging the gap between theoretical predictions and practical applications through partnerships. By combining rigorous computational methods with experimental validation and practical implementation, we aim to accelerate the development of better materials for energy storage, contributing meaningfully to a more resilient and sustainable energy future.

As a Cuomo Foundation-supported recipient from 2019 to 2021 under the IPCC Scholarship Programme, Pedro Fernández continues to make significant contributions to agricultural research and climate protection. An agricultural engineer based in Argentina, Pedro specializes in the dry forest ecosystems of South America. His training at INTA, Argentina’s leading national agronomy institute, laid the foundation for his academic pursuits at Humboldt University in Berlin, where he explored the intersection of ecology, agronomy, and social sciences, particularly within the Gran Chaco region. Following his IPCC Scholarship, Pedro received two years of postdoctoral financing from the Cuomo Foundation. He also represented the foundation during the inaugural edition of Re.Generation, a summer campus organized by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, launched in 2023.

Unthinkable ripples

Thecausal chains that have come together for me to write this text exceed any real number. I reflect on my path and the role of those who have accompanied me. I think about the odds of not meeting the right people at the right time, and I imagine multiverses where I might be doing something entirely different. Do I search for an explanation in my roots, in the hours I spent following trails, listening to sounds, and smelling the scents of the forest? Do I recognize a purpose in those memories? It’s an open question that I have yet to answer with certainty.

What I can clearly identify is that, for as long as I can remember, I’ve been shaped by the dry forests of the Chaco—once inhospitable places, wild territories filled with thorns, with hidden flowers and fruits in certain corners. These were lands inhabited by stories and legends from their Indigenous communities and from the criollo livestock herders.

Since I was two years old, my father would take me hunting in those forests on the weekends, as his father had done five decades earlier near the city’s edge, and his grandfather before him, in some dehesa in Spain. Walking in silence, watching the trees, and playing in the river water were the only things I did during my childhood free time. As I grew into adolescence, I witnessed how agricultural expansion devastated the landscapes I used to roam. It would not be easy to replicate that legacy with my daughters. Many of the landscapes I once inhabited are no longer forest. Perhaps that’s why I feel compelled to think about how we might conserve or use them in the best way possible.

I studied agronomy, graduated with honours, and began working, always clear that my goal was not to follow Burlag’s agronomic paradigm, focused on defeating the Malthusian theorem by producing more to feed a hungry world. This world already produces everything

we need; we must think more carefully about how to distribute it.

I completed and began my PhD at INTA, Argentina’s leading agricultural institution. My initial interest was to understand the impact of current production systems and whether there were alternative options. I discovered silvopastoral systems. In them—and in the dry Chaco—I found a real opportunity to study agroforestry systems across thousands of mechanized hectares, outside the logic of subsistence agriculture seen in the tropics, where such systems are feasible but don’t shift the needle in terms of food production. The Foundation supported this work through an IPCC fellowship.

That was my first encounter with Maria Elena Cuomo, President of the Cuomo Foundation, and Francisco A. Diaz Lison General Manager. Everything became easier thanks to their support. This fellowship allowed me to visit my study sites more often, better cover the cost of traveling hundreds of kilometres from home and complete the necessary analyses to produce a thesis with three relevant publications in the field. Those of us doing science in developing countries don’t only worry about the research questions—we also worry about whether we can carry them out in an environment filled with material constraints.

Today I’m in Berlin, at Humboldt University, where I’ve been addressing these questions for the past two years alongside a group of scientists led by one of the world’s leading minds in dry forest conservation: Tobias Kuemmerle. I learn daily from his German discipline, his effort, and his dedication to his calling: to understand and communicate, through science, the impacts our decisions have on these ecosystems.

This step, like completing my PhD, was also made possible thanks to a two-year fellowship from the Cuomo Foundation.

I came to Berlin with my two daughters and my partner. Every weekend, we remember our beloved dry Chaco, even as we enjoy the stability and freedom this city provides—paradoxically, doing better science here than we could in Argentina.

I also began to think that understanding fundamental ecological processes is important, but not enough: we must also understand how decisions are made. I decided to zoom out and think regionally, beyond the specific sites I studied in the dry Chaco, to the broader region of Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia. And not just the Chaco, but also the Cerrado, the Chiquitanía, and the Caatinga. Cattle ranching is a force that must stop destroying the dry forests across the continent, with immense carbon emissions and even greater biodiversity losses. Yet ranching supports many peasant

I think again about the causal chains that brought me to the Cuomo Foundation, and I still haven’t figured out the full picture. I call what I cannot explain: chance, God, or destiny, but what I can explain and recognize is many human beings’ desire, conviction, and effort. I see how the Foundation’s desire to help people like me pursue their passion for the common good—and to help people in far more complex situations live honourable lives, and push its purposes—has impacted my own life, what we know today about the dry Chaco, and, I hope, the wellbeing of a rancher now implementing silvopastoral systems without fear of losing productivity, a government that better evaluates opportunities to improve ranching, and many other ripples—or causal chains—that I cannot yet identify.

Led by its founder Muriel Natali-Laure, the Monaco-based association has received ongoing support from the

Cuomo Foundation, demonstrating a strong commitment to welcoming children with socio-emotional and communication challenges. The foundation contributed to the development of these cornerstone projects, which are located adjacent to each other in Annot and offer tailored holidays and activities. A significant new milestone—the establishment of La Maison de Delphine—has also been achieved, thanks to the continuous support and funding from the Cuomo Foundation.

What a wonderful opportunity for my son Gianni to be at La Maison de Delphine. Before September 2024, we visited many establishments, but none came close to this one. sessions in the psychomotor room, and swimming. Outdoors, they enjoy walks around Annot, playing boules, and going to the market on Tuesday mornings. Soon, they will also start yoga once a month on Wednesdays.

Writing is, at its core, an autistic impulse. The poet is an autistic speaker. An autistic person is like a naked figure in an empty room— illuminating nothing, holding back their light. Yet, when they write, it is as if they turn their skin inside out, revealing a hidden surface streaked with splendid colours. Autism is an inverted sun: its rays shine inward. The exterior appears smooth, without feeling or allure, but within lies a magnificence beyond compare. So long as the person remains enclosed within themselves, nothing—or almost nothing—radiates outward. But when they succeed in expressing themselves, the brilliance inside is breathtaking. Like the silent autistic person, the poet buries himself in his writing: he experiences a hidden glory, while remaining absent from the world.

Asthe tournament’s longest-standing partner, the Cuomo Foundation has played a pivotal role in establishing it as the world’s leading event in the U12 category.

For many years, we have dreamed of welcoming a team from India, and that dream became a reality with the 2024 edition. India will also be represented in 2025. This initiative pays tribute to the Cuomo Foundation’s various projects in India and further strengthens the bond between us. The team, composed of underprivileged children, embodies the values of sharing and solidarity that are at the heart of our sport.

The 2024 edition also welcomed over 120 participants with disabilities in the morning session dedicated to inclusive rugby. A specialised educator, employed by the Federation, works year-round with children’s

homes, associations, and other facilities, using rugby as an educational tool. During the event, 230 Monaco schoolchildren became educators for a day, engaging with these children, raising awareness of disability, and fostering inclusion. This activity is a key element of our tournament. More broadly, the Cuomo Foundation and the Monegasque Rugby Federation share deeply aligned values, and the Sainte Dévote Tournament stands as a testament to the success of our collaboration.

Since 2023, the Cuomo Foundation has been providing financial support for the developing career of pianist Stella Almondo. The 3-year funding scholarship, totalling €76,000, enables her to receive a tailored education adapted to the demands of her life as a musician.

In 2024, the young pianist recorded her first album with the Naïve/Believe label and performed numerous concerts across Europe.

One of the highlights of the year was the recording and release of my very first album, PASSION, on Naïve/Believe—a true milestone in the early stages of my career. The reviews have been incredibly encouraging, earning 4 diapasons in Diapason magazine and praise from France Musique, Radio Classique, Classica, ConcertoNet.com, and others.

This year, I also had the honour of becoming a Steinway & Sons Young Artist. I was fortunate to perform to full houses twice at the legendary Salle Cortot in Paris, as well as giving recitals in prestigious venues such as the Automobile Club de France, the Opéra de Reims, the Abbaye de la Cambre in Brussels, MIDEM in Cannes, the Théâtre des Variétés in Monaco for the Amis du Printemps des Arts, Strasbourg, and Luxembourg for the 43rd Bourglinster Festival. A particularly memorable moment was the recital I gave on my 18th birthday at the 41st Heures Musicales de Biot.

Another enriching experience was recording a recital at Salle Gaveau for Canal+, C8, and Mezzo, showcasing works by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, and Liszt.

I also successfully passed my general BAC with distinction through correspondence studies, proving that commitment to academics and passion for music can go hand in hand.

I am now pursuing my musical career while completing my second year of the Licence at the CNSMDP and my Artist Diploma at the École Normale Alfred Cortot. Balancing these dual paths requires organisation, dedication, and discipline, but I am determined to succeed in both.

Looking ahead to 2025, I am eagerly preparing to record my second album, scheduled for April, and continue my concert tour. Being

on stage is what I love most—sharing emotions and filling hearts with beautiful music.

As I reflect on my first year in Paris, I see how much it has transformed me. I am growing both artistically and personally settling into life away from my family, discovering new strengths, and becoming more independent.

I continue to work hard to achieve my goals and to honour the trust placed in me by my family, my country, and the Cuomo Foundation. Your invaluable support allows me to study with peace of mind and inspires me to give my very best every day.

Dr. Behki Maliba, a South African researcher and entrepreneur, exemplifies the Cuomo Foundation’s dedication to advancing research and fostering professional development. His career serves as a testament to the foundation’s commitment to nurturing talent within the research community, reflecting successful outcomes that align with its mission.

Dr. Maliba was one of the six research scholars funded and supported by the Cuomo Foundation from the IPCC scholarship programme of 2013-2015. He successfully completed his doctorate in 2016 focussing on the impacts of C02 and 03 on the yield and photosynthesis in Brassica napus. In 2022, the foundation continued to support Dr. Maliba by sponsoring his MBA in Agribusiness Management. With additional foundation funding, he began his own enterprise in July 2024, focussing on support for agricultural students.

Icompleted my MBA in November 2023 and graduated in July 2024.

The programme, fully funded by the Cuomo Foundation, enabled me to undertake a research project on the adaptive capacity of semi-commercial farmers in the face of climate change. The study examined strategies employed by these farmers—such as adopting disease-resistant or high-yielding crop varieties, practicing crop rotation to maintain soil health, and utilizing stored water for irrigation. However, significant disparities in access to finance emerged, revealing starkly different economic realities. This highlighted the critical importance of financial resources in effective adaptation. Despite these differences, participants widely agreed that mitigation strategies—such as crop diversification and the conservation of water and soil resources—can substantially enhance agricultural productivity. My project to assist students in establishing themselves in farming is also progressing well. Thanks to your financial support, I have been able to overcome numerous challenges and steadily implement a model designed to be economically viable and self-sufficient in the medium term. To date, the project is on a promising trajectory, and I am confident it will achieve long-term stability if we maintain our current efforts.

Looking ahead, I aim to focus on my current role at the Public Investment Corporation while deepening my research in sustainable development, particularly to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action*. My ambition is to leverage the skills

acquired during my PhD and MBA studies to take meaningful, practical steps that benefit the society in which I live.

I am also still considering the purchase of a farm. My initial motivation for pursuing an MBA was to equip myself with the knowledge and tools needed to run a business—specifically, a farm dedicated to producing environmentally friendly goods.

I am currently working on securing the financing necessary to bring this project, which is very close to my heart, to life.

SAFEGUARDING THE ROYAL COURT OF TIÉBÉLÉ

TIÉBÉLÉ, BURKINA FASO

The Royal Court of Tiébélé is an earthen architectural complex dating from the 16th century. It reflects the social structure and cultural heritage of the Kasséna people, one of the oldest surviving ethnic groups in Burkina Faso.

The Dizénidani Association, led by local resident Abatidan Casimir Nassara, runs an annual campaign to restore the court’s buildings and to protect the ancient decorative murals that adorn the structures. With continued support from the Cuomo Foundation, this initiative trains each year new generations in heritage preservation, and has ensured the site’s protection for over a decade. The Foundation played a crucial role during the lengthy discussions that resulted in the site’s inclusion on UNESCO’s Tentative List from 2012 to 2024.

The year 2024 has been one of major achievements. Thanks to sustained efforts over the past 10 years—and with crucial backing from the Cuomo Foundation—we are proud to have played a key role in the protection and preservation of the Royal Court of Tiébélé. In 2024, our work culminated in the successful inscription of the site as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after a decade of dedicated intervention.

In our final report for the Dora 2024 competition, we wrote: “We are confident that the 10th edition of the competition will take place in a Royal Court listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.” That was in June—and just a month later, we received the wonderful news of the site’s official listing. This achievement, and your support, were instrumental in shaping the final reports submitted by UNESCO’s national scientific committee.

Our project has proven that ancestral values can be passed down effectively. Over the years, the initiative has trained around 800 young girls and has restored the Royal Court’s houses annually, safeguarding this remarkable architecture. In 2024, the results spoke for themselves: the Cuomo Foundations’ decision to back this cultural project has been validated in every way. It is a shared victory, and the people of Tiébélé are deeply proud. As a token of our appreciation, our association has prepared a certificate of recognition for the Foundation, which we will send shortly. To mark this milestone 10th edition, we will pause to express our gratitude and celebrate this collective success.

The 10th edition of the holiday camp—also launched a decade ago—was another highlight. In 2024, we revisited the seedlings planted in previous years, which have now grown into trees on the site. The first cohort of camp participants

has now reached university level (2nd year) for those who have been able to continue their education uninterrupted. To date, more than 1,000 children have benefited from the camp. This 10th edition was particularly special as it welcomed around 15 children of internally displaced persons (IDPs), offering them care and a sense of normalcy amid the challenges of insecurity and terrorist attacks.

In summary, 2024 marks 10 years of partnership with the Cuomo Foundation: more than 20 supported projects, around 800 young girls trained, the transmission of ancestral values through the Dora competition, over 1,000 holiday camp beneficiaries, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, environmental progress with tree planting, and much more.

Originally from the Sahel region of Burkina Faso, I have witnessed first-hand the gradual deterioration of the situation in my country. This worsening context has not only limited my ability to carry out fieldwork, but has also compelled me to shelter some of my own relatives, who have become Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the capital.

Initially, my goal was to support marginalised youth — to provide them with food, energy access, and help them reintegrate into society. But in the face of conflict and mass displacement, I had to adapt my ambitions.

My desire to contribute to a deeper understanding — and ultimately the resolution — of the crises affecting the Sahel led me to enrol in the PhD programme in Regional and Territorial Development at the Université du Québec à Rimouski in the autumn of 2022. My research focuses on the impact of conflict on agropastoral practices in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso over the past decade.

Thanks to the financial support of the Cuomo Foundation, I was able to defend my thesis proposal on 15 October 2024. I am currently awaiting ethical approval to begin collecting field data in Burkina Faso, which will serve as the foundation for the writing of my dissertation.

LA MAISON D’ÉDUCATION DE LA LÉGION D’HONNEUR IN SAINT-DENIS

The ‘maisons d’éducation de la Légion d’honneur’ was established over two centuries ago by Napoleon I in 1805. Today, it remains focused on educating girls who are descendants of honoured individuals.

Auniquepublic institution, the Grand Chancellery of the Legion of Honour resonates through its values, activities, and fundamental mission with the philosophy and causes supported by the Cuomo Foundation.

The values upheld by the Grand Chancellery are those of the Legion of Honour, which it serves: merit, altruism, and human dignity. These values are shared with the Cuomo Foundation, which is committed to the development of youth and culture.

They also serve as the common thread linking the Grand Chancellery’s various activities, which have diversified over the years and may initially seem heterogeneous. Its primary role as the administrator of the Legion of Honour has gradually expanded to include the highest national distinctions, which also reward service to the public good: the Military Medal, the National Order of Merit, and the National Medal of Recognition for Victims of Terrorism.

Just like the Legion of Honour established by Napoleon, the educational homes welcome the descendants of decorated individuals, from middle school through post-secondary classes. Today, these educational institutions represent the Grand Chancellery’s main activity, supported by dedicated personnel and directly managed by the institution.

Finally, the institution’s museum recounts a thousand years of the history of honorary distinctions around the world and highlights the exemplary journeys of men and women who have been decorated, with the aim of inspiring visitors through virtuous role models.

National awards, education, and culture: of these three main missions of the Grand Chancellery, the latter two are closely aligned with the projects supported by the Cuomo Foundation. Yet, an even deeper connection exists between the two organizations, grounded

in a shared belief in the importance of passing on values, knowledge, and culture. Through its loyal and immense generosity, the Cuomo Foundation enables the Grand Chancellery to fulfil this fundamental mission. By contributing to the Mémoire de l’honneur (Memory of Honour) project, it helps preserve the archives of decorated individuals and promotes their accomplishments. Everything is going really well for me in Brussels, and I truly feel that I’m making steady progress. I’m finally settling into a calmer rhythm after several intense weeks of rehearsals for Mozart’s The Magic Flute, which we staged at the Conservatory and performed four times before Brussels audiences.

This was a first for the Conservatory: a nearly full-scale opera production bringing together singers, orchestra, and student conductors. The organisation was worthy of a professional theatre — intensive rehearsals, detailed staging, dressing rooms, makeup sessions, and even a costume designer making last-minute adjustments backstage… total immersion!

It was also my very first time performing with a live orchestra — a dimension that brought incredible depth to both the music and the experience. The project aimed to launch the final-year Master’s students, while allowing newcomers like me to observe, learn, and collaborate with them. It was an immensely enriching experience. I was able to witness the work of more advanced singers, grasp the demands of such a production, and take part in the daily rehearsals. I feel proud and grateful to have participated in such a project during my very first year.

It has made me even more determined to keep progressing and to give the best of myself.

My heartfelt thanks for your support, without which I could not embrace these experiences with such dedication and peace of mind.

In August 2024, an expedition team from Exploits Sans Frontières, located in Nice, completed its eighth mission to the Himalayas. The association’s aim is to create accessibilities in outdoor adventures for young adults regardless of physical challenges.

Since 2023, the association has gained significant support and momentum, primarily due to funding from the Cuomo Foundation. The eighth mission included a diverse group composed of paramedics, nurses, and volunteers, who supported five young individuals with disabilities on a meaningful adventure in Ladakh.

In2024, as part of a partnership between the Cuomo Foundation and Exploits Sans Frontières, a humanitarian and sports initiative was launched in the Himalayas for young students, some of whom were members of APAJH, a national association supporting youth with disabilities.

This project is part of Exploits Sans Frontières’ broader educational aid programme for schools in the high-altitude regions of Ladakh, northern India.

The Cuomo Foundation’s renewed and sustained support was instrumental in making this project a reality.

Over the course of a year, regular teambuilding outings, focused on cohesion and the sharing of core human values, helped bring this extraordinary expedition to life.

The eighth project challenged five young people, supported by a dedicated team of supervisors, to push their limits through the physical and mental challenge of attempting to

climb a peak over 6,000 meters high.

As fate would have it, severe weather prevented the group from reaching the summit. Yet, in their collective effort to advance, they learned invaluable lessons in mutual aid, solidarity, and tolerance.

The expedition also included the distribution of school supplies to the Dah-Hannou and Phiang schools, as well as financial support for the renovation of Tarou School, underscoring the essential spirit of sharing that defined the mission.

A unique experience that each participant will cherish for a lifetime.

My name is Suresh Kumar Stalin, and I am from Kovalam, near Chennai, India. I completed my schooling at St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School in Kovalam, where I graduated top of my class in the final exams. Despite these promising results, I faced significant challenges in pursuing higher education due to my family’s limited financial means. My father, a scrap metal dealer, could not afford to enroll me in a reputable university. In 2012, I was fortunate to be selected for the Cuomo Foundation scholarship programme. This vital support enabled me to fund part of my tuition and complete my undergraduate degree in electrical and electronic engineering. Today, I work at Visteon’s technical and service centre in Chennai—an international automotive company—where I have seven years of experience as an Equipment Functional Safety Manager.

I want to express my deep gratitude to the Cuomo Foundation for enabling me to pursue higher education through its scholarship programme. Thanks to this support, I earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Women’s Christian College, followed by a master’s degree in physics from Annamalai University. Cyclone Fengal Relief Efforts

Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Chennai and Puducherry on November 30, 2024, brought devastating rainfall and strong winds to coastal districts in North Tamil Nadu. The storm flooded low-lying areas, disrupted transportation, and severely impacted the livelihoods of many residents in Chennai and Chingleput.

In response to a request from the Diocese of Chingleput, the Cuomo Foundation provided €11,400 to support relief efforts. On December 21, 2024, the Foundation, in collaboration with the Diocese, distributed essential items, including clothing, groceries, and blankets, to over 1,000 vulnerable individuals from 10 affected villages.

of Chingleput, including Rev. Fr. Anand Damien, Rev. Fr. Esthakiyus (Vicar General), and Rev. Fr. Louis Rayar (Judicial Vicar), participated in the distribution event. In my capacity as the Cuomo Foundation’s Indian representative, I was joined by Mr. Roshan, one of our current scholarship recipient who is studying in London, and Mr. Prabakaran, a former scholarship recipient who is currently working as a city planner for the Tamil Nadu government.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Cuomo Foundation has supported flood relief efforts in the Chingleput district, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to providing aid and assistance to those affected by natural disasters.

As a young boy, Roshan Susairaj faced serious health issues and was fitted with a femoral prosthesis. The Foundation commenced its support in 2013, when he was merely 10 years old.

Today, their continued assistance includes his ongoing medical care and costs, educational expenses, and extracurricular pursuits; each of which plays a crucial role in enhancing his

physical health and personal growth. After finishing his schooling in Chennai, Roshan went on to study at a college of Arts and Science in his hometown, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science. His successful completion of the IELTS exam qualified him for admission to a university in London to study further. Now at 21 years old, Roshan is working towards a master’s degree in computer science in the UK, showcasing his remarkable journey of resilience and success.

It has been 12 years since the Cuomo Foundation started helping me, and all their support is unbelievable for me. I still remember that in 2013, the Cuomo Foundation sponsored me for my first artificial leg. At that moment, I realized this was the beginning of a bright future for me.

At first, I struggled a lot to communicate with Mrs. Elena Cuomo (whom I call «Mummy») and other members of the Foundation. When I was a child, I did not understand the importance of English. But I started learning at least enough to have conversations with those who were helping me. Later, after traveling and visiting different countries, I understood its value. I took the opportunity from the Foundation to improve my English, not just to talk to them, but also to prepare for my future. In 2023 I successfully completed my bachelor’s degree in First class certification.

After getting so much help from the Foundation for many years, in 2023, I got another big opportunity to stay in London for

a year to improve my English and get ready for my master’s studies. Throughout this journey, the Foundation always stood by me and supported me. Because of their help, I learned who I am and realized that I can take care of myself without depending on others. During my stay in London, I met people from different countries, learned about their cultures, and made many connections. I believe these connections will be useful for me in the future. In 2024, I successfully finished my course, took the IELTS exam, and got accepted into my dream university in London.

I am truly grateful to the Cuomo Foundation for everything they have done for me.

Faustina was born and raised in Chennai, a city that the Foundation has worked in for over 23 yrs. Iamdelighted to share that I successfully passed my practical exams in Physics and BEEE (Basic Electrical and Electronic Engineering) in December.

I also participated in a competition called Ideathon, where our team collaborated to develop innovative concepts around sensors and actuators. As part of this, we proposed a new idea for leak management.

In January 2025, I will complete my halfyearly exams.

I am also excited to tell you about an important upcoming event next year: an international conference organised by my engineering school, Panimalar, will take place on 21 and 22 March 2025. This conference will give students the chance to present their innovative ideas, either individually or as a team, to an international audience of experts and students from other universities, including from abroad. Certificates will be awarded to participants. I intend to take part—whether alone or as part of a team—to present our work and gain valuable feedback from professionals.

The Cuomo Foundation is the primary partner of the Associazione Culturale Fryderyk Chopin (AFC), established in Rome in 1987 by Maestro Marcella Crudeli. Each autumn, this association hosts the prestigious “ROMA” International Piano Competition, which celebrated its 33rd edition in 2024.

For over two decades, the Cuomo Foundation has supported the “Roma” International Piano Competition, which reflects a commitment to youth and cultural education. The 2024 competition held in the Eternal City, showcased nearly one hundred skilled musicians from 23 countries.

The Cuomo Foundation’s twenty-year support of the «Roma» International Piano Competition, created and directed by the famous pianist Marcella Crudeli, continued its path in common support to young people through education and culture in 2024. Since 1990, around 3,500 musically gifted young teenagers and adults have registered, coming from 81 countries on five continents.

The 33rd edition also hosted pianists truly deserving of being valorised. Not only that, but also the average artistic level of the almost one hundred participants, coming from 23 countries on three continents, was appreciated in the performances in front of the international jury, chaired by Marcella Crudeli and made up of eminent representatives of the concert and teaching world. Furthermore, it was possible to compare the different musical cultures in

the splendid setting of the ancient Cloister of San Giovanni Battista de’ Genovesi and in the gala evening, with the winners’ concert and the awards ceremony at the ancient Caravita Oratory, where the pianists were accompanied by the Competition Orchestra, conducted by Filippo Manci.

The Cuomo Foundation itself and its President, in addition to awarding the 1st «Chopin» Prize, believed that the second and third place winners were also worthy of receiving an extraordinary prize.

In 2024, the Fryderyk Chopin Association evolved into the Marcella Crudeli Foundation ETS, which aims to enhance its social outreach through concert programs in schools and other venues in collaboration with Roma Capitale, often providing listening guides for a richer cultural experience.

PREMIO ROMA DANZA COMPETITION

Since 2019, the Cuomo Foundation has been the primary sponsor of the Premio Roma Danza competition.

This dance competition was established in Rome in 2001, under the auspices of the Accademia Nazionale di Danza (AND), a renowned institution founded by the Russian dancer Jia Ruskaja (1902–1970). The Premio Roma Danza has the endorsement of the President of the Italian Republic, and in just over twenty years, it has risen to become one of the most prestigious dance competitions on the global stage.

Opento both Academy students and external candidates, the competition takes place in the Academy’s iconic performance venues, the Teatro Grande and the Teatro Ruskaja. Each edition alternates between choreography and performance, spanning both classical and contemporary repertoires.

Since 2018, a new Video Dance category has expanded the competitions’ scope, offering international visibility to directors and video artists who explore choreographic language through the lens of film. This section allows participants to submit their works online, extending the reach of the competition into multimedia and new technologies.

The 2024 edition of Premio Roma Danza was held from 14 to 19 July. In addition to the official prizes, the international jury awarded several choreographic residencies, reinforcing the competitions’ mission to support the professional development of young talent. A key goal of the event is to promote emerging artists by offering tangible opportunities for artistic and career advancement.

This shared vision has forged a strong and natural partnership between the Accademia Nazionale di Danza and the Cuomo Foundation, the main sponsor of the competition. United in their commitment to youth and culture, the Foundation fully embraces the Academy and its mission: to empower young people to realise their dreams and bring their ambitions to fruition through practical, nurturing support.

The 2024 edition showcased two forms of choreographic creation: stage works and compositions exploring the intersection of dance and digital technologies. Young choreographers from around the world took to the stage of AND’s Teatro Grande, performing before a distinguished jury of company directors, theatre leaders, and international critics, invited by the new Academy director, Professor Anna Maria Galeotti. Thanks to Professor Galeotti’s leadership, several artistic residencies were awarded at institutions represented by the jury members.

In 2024, the Cuomo Foundation supported I Cerchi Magici, a Roman cultural association focused on promoting Italian popular musical traditions and safeguarding cultural heritage for future generations.

INCLUSIVE ORCHESTRA

In 2024, the Arvalia Music School in Rome, run by I Cerchi Magici, launched the ‘Inclusive Orchestra’ project. Initially aimed at pre-adolescents and teenagers, the initiative offers free musical training—but its success quickly exceeded expectations, attracting participants of all ages and backgrounds.

Music has emerged as a bridge between cultures, a tool for both personal and collective growth, fostering integration and a strong sense of community belonging.

Thanks to this project, the Arvalia School has established itself as a cultural beacon and a meeting place for the neighbourhood. Through collaboration between public and private institutions, the initiative has achieved key objectives such as promoting social inclusion, reducing isolation, encouraging intergenerational cohesion, and fostering cultural enrichment.

Solidarity Theatre Company

Also in 2024, again with the support of the Cuomo Foundation, I Cerchi Magici launched the ‘Solidarity Theatre Company’ project—a cultural initiative designed to raise young people’s awareness of major contemporary issues through live performance. At its heart was a powerful production entitled ‘Make the Difference: Stop Violence’, targeting schoolchildren of all ages.

Premiering in Rome in December 2024, the show was met with enthusiastic acclaim. Blending song and spoken word, it tackled pressing topics such as violence against children and vulnerable people, the plight of war victims, school bullying, environmental destruction, and femicide. Each subject was approached with sensitivity and emotional depth, creating an immersive experience that encouraged genuine reflection among the young audience.

The active involvement of students strengthened the educational impact of the project, placing them at the heart of the process as actors and advocates for positive social change.

Antea was established in 1987 to provide 24-hour free palliative care to those who cannot afford assistance. The Roman association has been recognized and awarded nationally for its sympathetic all-encompassing approach to end-of-life care. In 2020 it was officially formed into a foundation.

Antea operates both at patients homes and at the Hospice of the Antea Centre, which has 30 single rooms and highly skilled staff on hand to provide help around-the-clock.

In 2024, due to the support of the Cuomo Foundation, the Antea Foundation was able to purchase a new electric vehicle to strengthen its “Ancora più vicino” programme, dedicated to delivering home care to terminally ill patients.

In 2024, with the generous backing of the Cuomo Foundation, Fondazione Antea planned and launched a significant expansion of its free home care services. This initiative came to fruition with the commissioning of a new vehicle dedicated to home care operations.

The “Ancora più vicino” project, made possible by the Cuomo Foundation’s donation of a car, represents a vital step forward in our ability to provide day-to-day care. It has allowed us to be truly closer, more responsive, and more effective in supporting those experiencing the most fragile phase of life.

Receiving care at home—surrounded by loved ones, familiar memories, and personal comforts—is a cornerstone of palliative care. But to make this possible, it takes more than highly qualified professionals: it requires the right resources and logistical tools to ensure care is genuinely accessible.

In its first few months, the donated vehicle—a Dacia Jogger—has greatly enhanced the management of deliveries of medications, medical devices, and assistive equipment. It enables our patients to remain at home, in the environment they cherish, while receiving comprehensive care.

This new means of transport has brought real logistical flexibility: it allows our teams to respond more quickly, operate more autonomously, and increase the number of

daily interventions. The impact is clear: in 2024 alone, Fondazione Antea carried out more than 27,000 home visits and an average of 15 daily deliveries of medical supplies. Thanks to the Cuomo Foundation’s vehicle, our operators now make more than 60 deliveries a week—a number that continues to grow.

The Cuomo Foundation’s contribution has had a direct and measurable impact on the quality of care we provide with reduced waiting times, faster emergency response, greater efficiency for our teams, and more sustainable logistics.

A key aspect of this contribution is its environmentally friendly approach. The hybrid vehicle combines low pollutant emissions with long range, making it ideal for daily, continuous use—a gesture of ecological responsibility without compromising efficiency.

With every kilometre driven, a little bit of humanity is moved forward—extending care, attention, and support to those who need it most.

Our collaboration with the Cuomo Foundation goes beyond mere operational support: it embodies a genuine sharing of values—proximity, dignity, and solidarity. For all of this, we express our deepest and most sincere gratitude.

Individual Scholarship: Awa Gueye

In 2012, Awa Gueye underwent life-changing cardiac surgery at CCPC in Dakar, as part of a medical humanitarian mission jointly organised by Chaîne de L’Espoir and the Cuomo Foundation. Following her full recovery, the Foundation has supported her educational goals.

Awa is currently enrolled in the University of Nantes to pursue a master’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology after overcoming major health issues and personal traumas, during which the financial and psychological support provided by the Cuomo Foundation proved crucial.

Icannotfully express my deep gratitude to the Cuomo Foundation, which has transformed the course of my life by supporting my studies and helping me overcome serious health challenges.

The year 2024 has been particularly memorable marked by both challenges and important successes. Thanks to the unwavering support and encouragement of the Cuomo Foundation, which continues to be my main source of motivation, I had the immense satisfaction of earning my bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, majoring in Cellular and Molecular Biology, at the University of Nantes. This crucial milestone has allowed me to continue my academic journey at the master’s level, opening new academic and professional horizons.

It has also been a year rich in learning, both theoretical and practical. I successfully completed the administrative steps to legalise my stay in France—an essential step in the realisation of my personal and professional goals. I am currently enrolled in the first year of a master’s in Biology-Health, specialising in Oncology, Haematology, and Nuclear Medicine

at the University of Nantes. My ambition is to work in the field of clinical research, to deepen our understanding of diseases and contribute to identifying risk factors to improve public health.

Since 2020, the Cuomo Foundation has been the main sponsor of this international art exhibition in Saint-Louis, a historic coastal city often dubbed the “Venice of Africa.”

Established in 2013 by Abdoukarim Fall, this annual exhibition gathers contemporary artists from West Africa and the broader African diaspora. Within a few years, it has become a prominent event in the local and regional art landscape.

ORGANISATION AND PARTICIPATION

The10th edition of the Itinéraires Artistiques de Saint-Louis (IAS/10), organised by Ndar Creation from 4 May to 10 June 2024, was a resounding success. We met all our objectives, with a remarkable turnout of young artists from various regions of Senegal, as well as from neighbouring countries, France, and the United States.

APPLICATIONS AND SELECTION

The international call for entries received 57 applications from a wide range of countries. The selection committee chose to exhibit 85 works, including:

• 16 photographs

• 8 sculptures

• 1 design work

• 57 paintings Selection was based on thematic relevance and the intrinsic quality of the work. In total, 45 artists were chosen to exhibit.

VISITORS AND OPENING

The opening on 4 May was a great success, welcoming 307 guests, including prominent figures such as Mr. Bacary Sarr, Secretary of State for Culture, Creative Industries, and Historical Heritage. Over the 35 days of the exhibition, more than 2,543 visitors attended, including:

• 1,177 schoolchildren

• 323 students

• 835 local visitors

• 208 international visitors

Numerous personalities from the arts, culture, politics, and business sectors left messages of encouragement and congratulations in the Visitors’Book, including:

• The Director of the Maison de la Culture Douta SECK

• The Director of the National Orchestra

• The Director of the Saint-Louis Regional Cultural Centre

• The Cultural Attaché of the U.S. Embassy

• Dr. Massamba Mbaye, art critic

TRIBUTES AND RECOGNITION

A tribute was paid to four leading figures in contemporary Senegalese art: Adama Sylla, Daouda Ndiaye, Amadou Dede Ly, and Luis Bassene. This special moment was warmly received by all participants and visitors.

WORKSHOPS

Two workshops were held during this 10th edition. The first, on 11th and 12th of May at the CRDS, welcomed 30 students who took part in introductory painting sessions and awareness activities on the dangers of plastic, along with training on recycling plastic into utilitarian objects or artworks. Artists Samba Sarr, Abdoukarim Fall, and Moussa Koné led the sessions.

A second workshop, on 30th of May 2024, brought together established artists from Dakar, other regions of Senegal, and the United States to exchange creative techniques with young artists from Saint-Louis.

RESULTS AND IMPACT

This 10th edition highlighted the importance of Itinéraires Artistiques in promoting young artistic talent while fostering civic and environmental awareness. Six of the 85 works exhibited were sold, reflecting strong interest and appreciation from visitors.

In conclusion, this year’s event once again confirmed the relevance and positive impact of the Itinéraires Artistiques de Saint-Louis. Thank you once again for the unwavering support of the Cuomo Foundation.
