Pour célébrer les 20 ans de la Fondation Cuomo, en pleine période de pandémie, nous avons invité tous nos partenaires et notre équipe à participer à une réunion surprise en ligne pour, à la fois, saluer Madame Maria Elena Cuomo pour son engagement continu envers la Fondation Cuomo et rappeler les actions et réalisations de ces 20 dernières années.

Cette rencontre « numérique » a eu lieu le 4 mai et a duré près de 3 heures. De nombreux intervenants, connectés à travers différents fuseaux horaires, ont pris la parole ou pré-enregistré des messages d’amitié et de remerciements pour la Fondation.

PRÉFACE DE LA PRÉSIDENTE

« En 2021, la Fondation Cuomo a fêté son 20ème anniversaire. Elle a été fondée en 2001, à Monaco, par mon défunt mari, Alfredo Cuomo, et moi-même.

En temps normal, la Fondation et tous nos partenaires - qui ont contribué ou ont été soutenus par nos actions et initiatives pendant toutes ces annéesauraient fêté cet anniversaire avec joie. Malheureusement, la célébration de cet événement spécial s’est faite en sourdine et s’est déroulée en ligne, à distance les uns des autres.

Personne ne pouvait imaginer qu’après les deux dernières années dévastatrices de l’épidémie mondiale de Covid-19, nous serions maintenant confrontés à la sérieuse possibilité d’une troisième guerre mondiale en 2022… Nos expériences personnelles avec la pandémie ont été très différentes selon notre âge, notre état de santé, notre statut socio-économique et notre situation géographique. Sans aucun doute, nous vivons une époque historique triste et catastrophique.

Comment pouvons-nous donner un sens à tout ce qui s’est passé ?

Pendant que j’écris cette préface et que j’essaie de me concentrer sur nos actions positives en 2021, je voudrais également profiter de cette occasion pour réfléchir à ce que la Fondation Cuomo a réussi à accomplir au cours de ces 20 dernières années d’aide et de soutien dans le monde entier.

EN INDE

Il y a 20 ans, nous avons commencé notre travail humanitaire en finançant la construction d’une école pour des enfants qui en avaient besoin. Depuis 2001, nous avons construit 7 grands complexes scolaires avec des salles de cours, des sanitaires modernes et séparés, ainsi que des internats pour les écoliers, tous situés dans la région du Tamil Nadu, au sud de l’Inde.

En regardant en arrière toutes nos réalisations et en acceptant aussi les déceptions de ces 20 dernières années, je remarque les difficultés auxquelles l’univers est confronté et je me pose à nouveau la question la plus persistante de la vie : pourquoi faisons-nous cela ?

Des milliers d’enfants fréquentent nos établissements construits dans des zones rurales et urbaines défavorisées. Des bourses d’études ont permis jusqu’à présent à 621 étudiants d’améliorer leurs perspectives de vie et leur avenir.

En 2021, bien que les écoles et les collèges soient restés fermés, des mesures d’aide et une assistance financière, fondamentale pour le salaire des enseignants, ont permis aux étudiants de continuer à bénéficier du programme scolaire par le biais de l’apprentissage à distance.

EN AFRIQUE

Depuis de nombreuses années, nous soutenons et finançons des actions et des projets sociaux, médicaux et artistiques sur le continent africain.

La Fondation s’occupe d’institutions d’apprentissage pour jeunes adultes au Mali, d’actions d’aide sociale visant à créer des communautés autosuffisantes, de journaux d’informations locaux en ligne, de la préservation de la « Cour royale de Tiébélé » au Burkina Faso, patrimoine culturel reconnu par l’UNESCO, du soutien d’événements artistiques sénégalais dans le quartier historique de Saint-Louis ou du financement, à hauteur de plusieurs millions d’euros, du Centre Cardio-Pédiatrique Cuomo à Dakar, au Sénégal, le tout premier centre de cardiologie pédiatrique construit spécialement pour accueillir les patients provenant de toute l’Afrique de l’Ouest.

Au début de l’année 2022, le Centre Cardio-pédiatrique Cuomo aura opéré

avec succès, depuis sa création, plus de 1 000 jeunes patients. Cette action médicale qui sauve des vies, transforme l’avenir de plusieurs générations au Sénégal et au-delà.

EN EUROPE

En Italie, nous soutenons les Arts et la Culture depuis de nombreuses années, avec la « Méthode Hobart », pionnière en matière de danse pour les personnes handicapées, l’Association culturelle Fryderyk Chopin pour le concours international « Roma » et, plus récemment, l’Académie nationale de danse de Rome pour les concours « Premio Roma Danza » et « Premio Roma Capitale ».

En 2021, le Concours international de piano « Roma » a célébré son 30ème anniversaire.

Nous accompagnons cet événement prestigieux depuis 2004.

À MONACO

Nous soutenons et sommes partenaires de la Croix-Rouge Monégasque depuis 2001 à travers de nombreuses actions et projets, en particulier, son programme de bourses d’études.

Depuis 2001, de nombreuses organisations caritatives ont bénéficié de notre implication comme l’Académie de danse Princesse Grace, Monaco Disease Power, le Challenge Sainte-Dévote et la compétition No Finish Line. Nous avons aussi collaboré avec la Mairie de Monaco sur d’importants projets d’aide sociale en Principauté.

Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat (GIEC)

En partenariat avec la Fondation Prince Albert II, nous co-finançons depuis 2013 la bourse d’étude du GIEC.

Ce programme innovant permet à des doctorants brillants, issus de pays moins développés, d’étudier le phénomène du changement climatique dans leurs propres régions.

En 2021, nous avons soutenu 7 nouveaux chercheurs pour la période 2021/23 ; depuis 2013 nous avons entièrement financés 23 projets de recherche.

Ce ne sont là que quelques points marquants du travail que nous accomplissons depuis 2001.

D’autres actions et collaborations ont lieu à Cuba, au Brésil, au Cambodge, au Vietnam et en Haïti.

Et enfin, je me souviens de mon cher mari Alfredo Cuomo, qui trouvait souvent son inspiration dans ces mots :

La Fondation Cuomo reste une organisation privée de petite taille, mais nos objectifs et nos perspectives sont ambitieux. Comme le monde change à un rythme rapide, nous aspirons à évoluer nous aussi. Pour conclure, je vais répéter ce que j’ai dit l’année dernière car mes sentiments, et les convictions de la Fondation Cuomo, n’ont pas changé en vingt ans. Nous restons déterminés et engagés dans nos actions fondamentales pour aider ceux qui ont besoin d’aide pour développer un avenir durable. »

Avant-propos

Cette année 2021 semblait être le commencement du monde d’après. Mais les résolutions inspirées de cette terrible pandémie du COVID 19 se sont fanées comme fleur au soleil…

Les millions de morts, les parcours scolaires bouleversés, les professionnels épuisés ont laissé place à la même course effrénée vers le toujours plus et encore plus vite.

Malgré cela ou peut-être à cause de cela, la Fondation Cuomo a tenu ses engagements et orienté ses efforts vers l’accès à l’éducation, la santé, la recherche sur le climat et l’art.

Nous avons tout de même pu fêter les 20 ans d’actions de la Fondation Cuomo, en mode numérique compte tenu des circonstances !

Dans ce contexte, il y a eu, bien sûr, des adversités de tous genres : individuelles, institutionnelles mais aussi des avancées et de nouveaux défis à relever.

24 millions d’euros de dépenses opérationnelles orientés par la Fondation

Cuomo depuis 20 ans vers les 14 pays d’interventions et les 30 différents partenaires repartis dans le monde, ont permis d’accompagner 500 boursiers soutenus par la Croix-Rouge monégasque, ainsi que 612 autres boursiers issus des écoles bâties par la Fondation Cuomo en Inde et dans lesquelles se rendent encore quotidiennement plus de 3 500 élèves.

700 enfants et jeunes adultes ont pu être opérés de pathologies cardiaques au Centre Cuomo (CCPC) de Dakar depuis 2017 et ainsi échapper à une aggravation de leur état de santé, voir à un décès assuré. Ce sont là quelques exemples d’actions menées, contre vents et marées, pour mieux appréhender le futur qui vient.

Ce futur est, en partie, étudié par les jeunes chercheurs, boursiers soutenus par le GIEC et la Fondation Cuomo. Ils sont aujourd’hui 23 qui observent, analysent et font avancer la connaissance sur les mécanismes de l’évolution du climat et son impact sur nos sociétés. Si aujourd’hui il existe, globalement, un accord sur la nécessité de réduire la production de gaz à effet de serre, il est beaucoup moins évident que nous soyons, collectivement, conscients des risques que nous pourrions courir même si nous réduisons notre empreinte carbone de manière drastique et rapide.

CROIX-ROUGE MONÉGASQUE

Depuis sa création en 2001, la Fondation Cuomo est un partenaire engagé auprès de la Croix-Rouge Monégasque. Certains des nombreux projets d’actions sociales et d’éducation, qui ont été réalisés, sont toujours actifs.

En 2021, grâce au support de la Fondation Cuomo, le nombre de bourses d’études octroyées par la Croix-Rouge Monégasque s’élève à 44, soit un financement de 92 910€.

Au total, 500 boursiers ont pu recevoir l’appui de ce partenariat historique depuis 2002, représentant un montant total cumulé de 1,16 millions d’euros.

L’obtention de cette bourse m’a permis d’intégrer l’EFAP Paris, formation pour laquelle je m’étais préparée tout au long de l’année du baccalauréat et pour laquelle j’avais réussi le concours en début d’année. Sans cette bourse salvatrice, je n’aurais pas pu (malgré mes efforts et la réussite du concours) intégrer cette école, faute de moyens. »

Réponses exceptionnelles aux urgences - 2020

AIDE EN ÉQUIPEMENT SANITAIRE, HÔPITAL DE MONACO

Pour faire face à la pandémie en Principauté de Monaco et consciente de la nécessité de garantir l’approvisionnement en équipement sanitaire, la Fondation Cuomo a décidé de faire un don à la Croix-Rouge Monégasque. L’organisme humanitaire a été chargé, au plus haut de la crise sanitaire, de fournir le matériel nécessaire (des masques, des tenues de protection et des gants principalement) à l’hôpital Princesse Grace de Monaco.

SOUTIEN AUX SINISTRÉS DE LA TEMPÊTE ALEX, VALLÉE DE LA ROYA

La pandémie n’a pas été la seule catastrophe vécue pendant l’année 2020. Le 2 décembre, la Fondation Cuomo a fait don de trois véhicules aux Mairies de Fontan, la Brigue et Tende, trois communes parmi celles les plus durement frappées par les dégâts causés par la tempête Alex dans les Alpes-Maritimes, le 2 octobre dernier. Il s’agit d’une action humanitaire rendue possible par l’intermédiaire de la Croix-Rouge Monégasque (CRM) qui a coordonné l’initiative.

Les véhicules tout-terrain ainsi offerts doivent faciliter l’acheminement des vivres vers les villages du haut pays dont les liaisons routières ont été interrompues par la tempête.

BOURSES D’ÉTUDES DU GROUPE

D’EXPERTS INTERGOUVERNEMENTAL

SUR L’ÉVOLUTION DU CLIMAT (GIEC)

Le GIEC a été créé au sein de l’ONU en 1988 « en vue de fournir des évaluations détaillées de l’état des connaissances scientifiques, techniques et socio-économiques sur les changements climatiques, leurs causes, leurs répercussions potentielles et les stratégies de parade ». Son organe consultatif est composé d’un groupe de scientifiques indépendants.

Le GIEC a reçu le Prix Nobel de la Paix avec l’ancien vice-président américain Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. en 2007. Avec les fonds de cette récompense, le GIEC a créé un programme de bourses pour soutenir la recherche ; programme qui est réservé aux doctorants issus de pays en développement et qui préparent une thèse liée au changement climatique.

Tous les deux ans, un appel à candidatures est lancé pour renouveler le programme qui comprend deux années de suivi et d’aide financière.

La Fondation Cuomo apporte son soutien à cette initative depuis 2013.

En mars 2021, à partir d’une liste de candidatures présélectionnées par le GIEC, la Fondation a choisi 7 projets de recherches proposés par des doctorants venant du Benin, du Burkina Faso, de Chine, de Colombie, d’Éthiopie et du Sénégal.

La Fondation Cuomo soutient la nouvelle promotion à hauteur de 73 750 €.

Un fait marquant est à signaler dans le développement de ce programme de bourses d’études : certains étudiants des promotions précédentes ont sollicité le soutien de la Fondation Cuomo afin de poursuivre et de pousser encore plus loin leurs études dans les domaines qu’ils avaient explorés et de mettre en application les découvertes de leurs recherches scientifiques. La Fondation a accepté d’en accompagner certains (Cf. page 54).

LA MAISON D’AMÉLIE

En 2012, la Fondation Cuomo a participé à la construction de la « Maison d’Amélie » à Annot, dans le département des Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Cette maison de répit est destinée aux jeunes porteurs de handicap et à leurs familles. Depuis lors, elle a été soutenue par notre organisation dans sa partie fonctionnement.

Ce projet novateur s’est étendu en 2018 avec la construction d’un gîte annexe, « La Maison des copains », soutenu également par la Fondation grâce à la gestion globale du site.

En 2020, l’association gérante du projet, Monaco Disease Power, a fait face à un taux d’annulation très élevé provoqué par les restrictions sanitaires de la pandémie et l’apport de la Fondation Cuomo est devenu essentiel pour atteindre l’équilibre budgétaire.

CHALLENGE SAINTE-DÉVOTE

Cette journée d’échanges, axée sur les valeurs du rugby, est née en 2010 d’un rapprochement entre la ville corse de Lucciana et la Principauté autour de la sainte patronne monégasque, sainte Dévote.

Au fil des années, le nombre d’équipes participantes n’a cessé d’augmenter et environ 20 équipes internationales s’affrontent dans la catégorie mixte U12. C’est aujourd’hui la compétition mondiale la plus importante de ce type.

La motivation de ses organisateurs a toujours été de permettre aux enfants de découvrir des cultures différentes et de s’éloigner de leur univers pour s’ouvrir sur le Monde. Tout cela se fait avec, pour langage commun, le sourire et le jeu. Les ateliers dédiés aux enfants porteurs de handicap démontrent ces volontés, quelles que soient les différences. La Fondation soutient l’initiative depuis 2013.

CONCOURS INTERNATIONAL DE PIANO

« ROMA »

Créé en 1990 par l’Associazione Culturale « Fryderyk Chopin », fondée et présidée par le Maestro Marcella Crudeli, le Concours international de piano « Roma » est organisé chaque année dans la capitale italienne.

La Fondation Cuomo est partenaire de l’association et sponsorise ce concours depuis 2004.

Après l’annulation de la saison 2020 en raison de la pandémie, la 30ème édition du concours a eu lieu en présentiel du 04 au 16 novembre 2021. Pendant deux semaines, le Chiostro dei Genovesi, situé à Trastevere, au cœur de Rome, a accueilli une centaine de pianistes venus du monde entier.

Le Théâtre Palladium de l’Université « Roma Tre » a, quant à lui, accueilli la soirée de clôture de cet évènement musical.

Le vainqueur, Slava Guerchovitch, est un pianiste français né à Monaco.

Cette 30ème édition a vu l’attribution d’un « Prix spécial Alfredo et Maria Elena Cuomo » d’un montant de 5 000 euros. Ce prix « coup de cœur » a été attribué à Ivan Basic (Serbie) pour son interprétation du « Concerto pour piano no 1, op.23 » de Piotr Ilitch Tchaïkovski.

ACADÉMIE NATIONALE DE DANSE ROME

PREMIO ROMA DANZA

L’Accademia Nazionale di Danza est une prestigieuse institution intégrée au système universitaire italien. Elle a officiellement été créée en 1948, transformant une structure fondée en 1940, par la danseuse russe Jia Ruskaja, et affiliée à l’époque à l’Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica.

Crée en 2001 au sein de l’Académie, le concours international «Premio Roma Danza» récompense chaque année les jeunes danseurs venus à Rome se mesurer aux meilleurs représentants de leur génération.

Pour la deuxième année consécutive, l’édition 2021 a été dédiée à la « vidéodanse » et a eu lieu, à distance.

Une nouvelle épreuve a été introduite cette année avec la participation des Municipalités de Rome (équivalent aux Mairies d’arrondissements). Son objectif est de valoriser la créativité des jeunes Romains en mettant en avant leur rapport au territoire à travers sa géographie, ses aspects historiques et socio-culturels.

La soirée de clôture a été célébrée le 12 juillet en présence des membres du jury et de quelques invités au Teatro Ruskaja de l’Académie. Elle a été diffusée en direct sur les réseaux sociaux.

Le prix spécial « Alfredo et Maria Elena Cuomo », créé l’an dernier, a été décerné cette année à Samuele Soddu. Son œuvre de « vidéo-danse » intitulée « Le Memorie della Musica » a été distinguée pour sa capacité de créativité et de résilience.

ans de renaissance de l’éducation dans le Tamil Nadu »

Monsieur Alfredo Cuomo et Madame Maria Elena Cuomo, couple romain, ont visité l’Inde pour la première fois en 1999. Ils étaient venus pour leurs vacances et ont séjourné à l’hôtel Fisherman’s Cove de Kovalam, à Chennai. Alors qu’ils se rendaient dans une église voisine, ils sont tombés par hasard sur une vieille école et un orphelinat délabré.

Bien qu’ils soient venus en vacances, cette expérience a jeté les bases de leur vocation à aider les personnes les plus défavorisées, ce qui a conduit à la naissance de la Fondation Cuomo, officiellement créée en 2001, avec comme devise : « L’art de l’éducation est l’éducation du cœur ».

L’objectif de la Fondation était d’instruire les personnes les plus pauvres afin d’assurer leur bien-être et d’aider à leur tour les autres personnes dans le besoin. Monsieur Alfredo Cuomo a consacré une grande partie de sa fortune à la création et au développement de la Fondation en aidant ainsi des milliers de personnes désavantagées.

Ils ont commencé leur mission à Kovalam, qui relevait alors de l’archidiocèse de Madras-Mylapore. Plus tard, en 2002, le diocèse de Chingleput a été fractionné, étendant ainsi la mission au diocèse de Chingleput.

Les débuts de la mission :

La mission a commencé à Kovalam en 2002, l’année qui a vu la construction d’un pensionnat pour filles et une maison de retraite pour hommes âgés. Un pensionnat pour garçons est venu agrandir ces infrastructures en 2004. Cette même année, la construction du nouveau bâtiment de l’école secondaire St. Joseph’s a aussi été achevée ; elle a une capacité de 2 500 élèves. L’année suivante, un internat pour garçons a été construit au sein de St. Charles Higher Sec. School de KG Kandigai.

En 2005, la R. C. Higher Sec. School a été inaugurée à Sendivakkam. Il en a été de même pour l’école primaire catholique à Santhome (Chennai) accueillant 800 élèves. La Fondation a soutenu la création de deux nouveaux internats (garçons et filles) ainsi qu’une salle polyvalente à Sendivakkam. À KG Kandigai, un autre pensionnat est mis à disposition des jeunes filles. À Kovalam, l’école Mount Carmel a été agrandie, elle peut désormais accuellir 500 élèves au sein de deux sections : maternelle et primaire.

Le Cuomo Foundation Trust of India a été créé en 2008 avant le décès de Monsieur Alfredo Cuomo survenu en 2009. Mais la mission a été maintenue par son épouse, Madame Maria Elena Cuomo, qui est devenue la Présidente de la Fondation Cuomo et a continué d’aider l’humanité, en développant l’infrastructure existante avec la construction de bâtiments scolaires supplémentaires à Kovalam et un centre informatique à KG Kandigai. Elle a également apporté des équipements complémentaires tels qu’une camionnette et des générateurs au profit du centre d’hébergement pour personnes âgées, Mercy Home. Des concours ont été organisés pour les élèves des écoles Cuomo. Un réfectoire pour les repas de midi a été aménagé à Sendivakkam en 2015.

Madame Cuomo a métamorphosé la vision traditionnelle de la Fondation et de ses activités en gérant les projets de manière professionnelle avec un regard sur l’avenir.

À partir de 2019, la Fondation a adopté une approche globale pour faire de l’école secondaire Amala Annai à Mambakkam, une école « verte » en introduisant des mesures de préservation des sols, en plantant des arbres et en utilisant du verre, de l’aluminium et de l’acier recyclés pour ses bâtiments. L’école a opté pour une source d’énergie et un usage de l’eau plus durables.

Cuomo, le diocèse de Chingleput a changé le nom de l’école de R.C. Higher Secondary School en Alfredo Cuomo Higher Sec. School.

La Fondation a étendu son appui en allant au-delà des écoles et des foyers. Elle a fourni du matériel de secours (Covid-19) aux enfants défavorisés dans les établissements éloignées de Mylapore. Le même matériel a été distribué à 1 000 familles dans et autour des écoles de la Fondation Cuomo au sein du diocèse de Chingleput au cours de l’année 2020.

La même année, la salle des fêtes Thomas Community Hall, « Little Mount » a été rénovée. Les revenus provenant de cette infrastructure sont accordés à des étudiants boursiers qui font des recherches sur le changement climatique et sur d’autres sujets innovants.

ST. JOSEPH’S HIGHER SEC. SCHOOL, KOVALAM

L’année académique a commencé au mois de septembre 2021 au lieu du mois de juin, et cela à cause de la pandémie de Covid-19.

Les étudiants sont arrivés avec l’esprit léger et beaucoup d’enthousiasme après une pause d’un an. Les collégiens ont participé à des activités telles que la célébration de la Journée des enseignants, le jumelage d’écoles (programme d’échange), une session interactive avec les étudiants du collège Loyola sur les mesures de précaution à prendre pour éviter la Covid-19.

Ils ont également participé à une campagne de nettoyage de la plage et à une visite du collège AMEET Maraine.

En raison de la Covid-19, le Conseil des examens du gouvernement a permis à tous les étudiants admissibles de passer dans la classe supérieure sans devoir se soumettre aux examens. Les élèves de la 12ème année ont obtenu leurs résultats en fonction de la moyenne de leurs notes des deux années précédentes.

ALFREDO CUOMO HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL, SENDIVAKKAM

Avant la réouverture de l’école, pour la nouvelle année académique 2021, les enseignants ont reçu de nombreux programmes de formation comme créativité et spontanéité dans l’enseignement, apprentissage pour préparer l’esprit des enseignants, gestion du temps et des mesures efficaces pour un processus d’enseignement proactif.

Un séminaire d’une journée a été organisé pour le personnel féminin. Les étudiants ont été accueillis après une longue interruption due à la pandémie. Un programme de vaccination a été effectué auprès des élèves.

La direction de l’école a commémoré l’anniversaire de la disparition de Monsieur Alfredo Cuomo, le fondateur.

ST. CHARLES HIGHER SEC. SCHOOL, K.G. KANDIGAI

L’école secondaire supérieure St. Charles a rouvert ses portes le 1er septembre 2021 et la direction de l’école a distribué des livres et des sucreries aux étudiants pour fêter ce retour en classe.

La journée des enseignants a été célébrée avec enthousiasme. Ils ont sensibilisé les élèves sur l’importance de l’agriculture et ont reçu une formation pratique sur le terrain.

Des aides COVID ont été distribuées pour les villageois de K.G.Kandigai.

La Journée mondiale de l’enfance a été marquée par l’organisation de différentes activités ludiques.

Tous les écoliers ont été vaccinés dans le cadre des mesures de précaution de la Covid-19.

Le jour de Noël a été fêté à la fin de leurs vacances semestrielles. Les élèves ont eu de très bonnes notes bien que la pandémie ait affecté leur scolarité. La direction a pris toutes les mesures nécessaires pour assurer la sécurité des enfants sur le campus.

AMALA ANNAI HIGHER SEC. SCHOOL, MAMBAKKAM

L’école Amala Annai a commencé l’année scolaire 2021 avec une ouverture partielle réservée aux élèves de la 12ème standard. Cette promotion a obtenu de très bons résultats aux examens avec 100% de réussite.

Pendant la situation de pandémie, les habitants du village ont reçu du matériel de secours et l’école est restée intacte depuis son inauguration en 2019.

Au cours de cette année 2021, la direction de l’école a organisé un programme de formation pour les enseignants par le biais de session en ligne via Zoom et Meet. Les jeunes ont été vaccinés après leur arrivée à l’école. Des réunions de parents d’élèves ont régulièrement été organisées pour assurer un meilleur suivi de la scolarité.

ROSHAN ET SA FAMILLE

En 2008, un très jeune garçon de Chennai, Roshan Susairaj, a été amputé de la jambe. L’ampleur de l’amputation et une prothèse mal adaptée ont aggravé ses problèmes de santé. Roshan a été présenté, à l’âge de 10 ans, à la Fondation qui a commencé à contribuer à son rétablissement et à sa réhabilitation. En 2013, il a bénéficié d’une prothèse fémorale réajustée et d’une physiothérapie appropriée.

Roshan, sa sœur aînée, Jenifer, et sa mère bénéficient d’un soutien financier total de la part de la Fondation pour leur éducation, leur formation et leur assistance médicale. Titulaire d’une maîtrise de commerce, Jenifer travaille aujourd’hui à la banque indienne HDFC. Elle poursuit, en parallèle, une maîtrise en Administration des affaires.

Roshan est actuellement en deuxième année de licence en informatique.

DEMANDE DE SOUTIEN BOURSIER

Subash Chandra Bose, ex-boursier du programme « Alfredo Cuomo » entre 2019 et 2021 à Sendivakkam, a sollicité à nouveau le support de la Fondation Cuomo pour le financement d’une formation d’agent de police.

Grâce à ce soutien, l’étudiant s’est formé au sein de l’Académie de police « Angal Karur » basée à Chennai et a acquis de nouvelles compétences en vue de son insertion professionnelle. Il est en attente des résultats de l’examen final qui confirmeront son futur poste.

« J’ai fait partie de l’Académie de police Angal Karur pendant 6 mois. L’ambiance y était très bonne et agréable. Il y avait, dans ma section, environ 80-85 étudiants qui avaient tous un incroyable esprit d’entraide.

Le personnel était habile et motivant et les professeurs tous excellents […]

Parallèlement aux cours théoriques, j’ai suivi plusieurs entraînements physiques qui comprenaient la course, le saut à l’élastique, le saut en hauteur, le saut en longueur, l’éducation physique, la montée à la corde, l’haltérophilie, etc.

Après cette formation, j’attends maintenant les résultats de l’examen final dans l’optique d’intégrer la police nationale.

Dans l’ensemble, j’ai eu une très bonne expérience et je suis très reconnaissant pour votre grande aide. »

MADAME SABINE STEINER, FIDÈLE AU « PROGRAMME DE BOURSES D’ÉTUDES

ALFREDO CUOMO » EN INDE

En 2006, Madame Sabine Steiner a accompagné les membres de la Fondation Cuomo à Chennai pour assister aux cérémonies d’inauguration d’infrastructures construites par la Fondation Cuomo sur le sol indien.

Lors de cette visite, elle a rencontré les élèves de l’établissement St. Joseph’s Higher Sec. School de Kovalam bénéficiant du programme de bourses d’études Alfredo Cuomo. Cette initiative, lancée en 2004, soutient les élèves défavorisés à poursuivre leurs études supérieures.

Madame Steiner a été à la fois impressionnée et émue par cette rencontre qui l’a incitée à contribuer à l’avenir de ces jeunes adultes.

Parmi eux, Monsieur Antony Raj de St. Joseph’s Higher Sec. School de Kovalam, qui a obtenu son diplôme BSc en 2009. Il a respectivement travaillé pour la

société Tata Consultancy, puis chez Cognizant, une entreprise informatique, avant de déménager avec sa famille à Riyad pour occuper un poste de Data Scientist au sein de l’entreprise Masterworks.

Madame Sabine Steiner a personnellement fait don de plus de 23 000 euros pour financer les études supérieures d’environ 30 boursiers méritants. Son appui continu a aidé les étudiants à terminer leur cursus, à être financièrement autonomes et à devenir des modèles positifs pour leur famille.

A l’approche de cette année si importante pour l’histoire de la Fondation Cuomo, sa Présidente, les Membres de son Conseil d’administration et son Directeur général tiennent à remercier Madame Steiner pour sa bonne volonté, sa confiance et la constance de son implication.

CENTRE CARDIO-PÉDIATRIQUE CUOMO CCPC - DAKAR

L’autonomie, un sujet complexe

« La pandémie de Covid-19 a eu de nombreuses conséquences sur tout, partout, et bien évidemment sur le fonctionnement du Centre CardioPédiatrique Cuomo, à Dakar.

En premier lieu, des conséquences humaines qui ont bouleversé toute l’organisation de l’hôpital qui, pour les besoins sanitaires urgents, a vu se transformer la réanimation du CCPC, la seule équipée de façon moderne de tout le Sénégal (ventilateurs, surveillance électronique permanente, personnels infirmiers formés). Elle a été convertie en centre d’accueil pour les malades graves atteints de la Covid-19.

Entre les arrêts complets d’activité cardiaques et les reprises parfois limitées par les absences du personnel soignant atteints de Covid, le flux de malades opérés a significativement diminué en 2021, atteignant le nombre de 122 opérations du cœur.

Nous avons profité de cette activité réduite pour mettre en place un suivi informatique des plus moderne et performant appelé CardioReport (d’un coût de 220 000 €). Ce système permet non seulement de suivre en temps réel des malades tout au long de leur parcours, depuis la consultation aux différents stades : du bloc opératoire, en réanimation et enfin en hospitalisation, mais aussi de tracer tout le matériel nécessaire, et ce pour chaque malade. Cet outil permet donc de connaître l’état de chaque personne opérée et de suivre les malades au long cours afin de savoir quelle pathologie pose problème et d’y remédier rapidement.

Ce suivi a aussi un but académique à moyen terme qui est celui de pouvoir publier dans des revues scientifiques et de présenter des séries de patients à descongrèsmédicauximportants.Cemêmeéquipementinformatiquepermet la gestion des stocks (particulièrement importante en chirurgie cardiaque) ainsi que celle des médicaments consommés. Enfin l’informatisation permet la gestion de la maintenance du matériel indispensable et coûteuse dans un centre chirurgical de pointe.

Nous avons aussi, parallèlement, aidé au recrutement d’un Directeur dédié au Centre Cuomo avec l’aide et l’assentiment de nos partenaires Sénégalais. Ce Directeur spécifique au Centre a pour rôle d’organiser au mieux les dépenses

et de connaitre le coût réel par malade et non plus sous forme d’un forfait comme précédemment.

En 2021, la Fondation Cuomo a investi 220 491 euros dans cette structure. Le cumul des dépenses est visible année après année (voir le diagramme 1) et s’élève à 6,7 millions d’euros depuis le début.

Cette année 2021 marque aussi la fin du partenariat contractuel avec la « Chaîne de l’Espoir » pour une gestion commune du projet et des dépenses courantes.

Nous continuons à discuter avec la « Chaîne de l’Espoir » pour agir harmonieusement, mais chacun séparément et de façon complémentaire en poursuivant notre implication financière qui va diminuant pour laisser le Sénégal prendre en main cette structure unique et devenir autonome. L’objectif est en phase d’être atteint. »

AWA GUEYE

Awa Gueye est une étudiante sénégalaise qui a bénéficié d’une intervention cardiaque dans le cadre d’une mission humanitaire organisée par la Chaîne de l’Espoir et la Fondation Cuomo à Dakar en 2012.

Elle a pu ainsi reprendre le chemin de l’école et terminer sa scolarité.

En 2017, la jeune femme a demandé le soutien de la Fondation pour entreprendre des études supérieures en filière Biologie appliquée et Génie chimique. La bourse octroyée lui a permis de préparer un Diplôme supérieur de technologie (DST).

En 2021, une nouvelle bourse lui a été attribuée pour compléter sa formation avec une Licence professionnelle en Génie biologique et biotechnologie. Ce cursus perfectionnera davantage ses compétences et facilitera son insertion professionnelle dans ce domaine de pointe.

Ateliers d’arts plastiques destinés aux élèves tenus dans le cadre des Itinéraires artistique de Saint-Louis

ARTISTIQUES

DE SAINT-LOUIS

« Itinéraires Artistiques de Saint-Louis » est une exposition collective d’arts visuels fondée en 2013 par l’Association « Ndar créations ».

Elle se tient tous les ans dans la ville portuaire de Saint-Louis, au nord du Sénégal. La Fondation Cuomo a apporté son soutien à la 7ème édition de l’exposition qui s’est déroulée du 06 au 30 juin 2021 au Centre de Recherches et de Documentation du Sénégal (CRDS/ex-Musée IFAN de Saint-Louis).

La sélection des participants se fait sur dossier. Vingt-huit artistes ont été retenus pour l’édition 2021. Ils ont présenté 56 œuvres dont 11 ont été vendues. Le vernissage a eu lieu avec la présence de Monsieur Abdoulaye Diop, ministre de la Culture et de la communication du Sénégal et de Monsieur Mansour Faye, ministre des Infrastructures, des Transports terrestres et du Désenclavement, également maire de la ville de Saint-Louis. Au total, 1510 personnes ont visité l’Exposition.

Parallèlement, deux ateliers d’arts plastiques, destinés aux élèves de la région, ont été mis en place. Lors de cette session, les jeunes ont été sensibilisés face aux dangers du plastique et à sa récupération dans le processus de la création artistique.

GROUPEMENT ZEINE

L’Association Zeine, fondée en 2010, rassemble un collectif d’éleveurs basés à Gorom-Gorom, capitale de la province d’Oudalan au Burkina Faso.

Dès ses débuts, la Fondation Cuomo en soutien avec les initiatives locales, comme la réalisation de nombreux forages et la mise en place de programmes d’alphabétisation.

Un nouveau projet que la Fondation a accepté de soutenir a été proposé en 2019. Il s’agit d’un processus de renforcement économique, à travers l’attribution, à certains ménages vulnérables, d’une dotation de chèvres.

Dans un contexte social où les chèvres représentent, au-delà de leur atout agro-alimentaire, une forme de monnaie d’échange, un troupeau de ruminants sert de socle économique à la famille. L’initiative vise à renforcer la résilience des communautés locales face au changement climatique et à l’insécurité alimentaire entre autres.

En 2021, un nouveau volet de ce programme a été validé par la Fondation Cuomo. Cette étape est spécialement mise en place au bénéfice des déplacés internes, installés actuellement dans la province d’Oudalan.

« En 2021, le soutien de la Fondation visait la création d’un cheptel destiné à 84 ménages vulnérables des déplacés internes de GoromGorom. 50 femmes de la commune ont ainsi été formées aux techniques de gestion du troupeau, sur l’importance de la vaccination des animaux, à l’alimentation et l’hygiène et enfin à la reproduction.

250 caprins ont reçu le vaccin contre la pasteurellose. Toutes ces chèvres ont aussi été bouclées afin de pouvoir faciliter leur identification et leur suivi.

L’Association Zéine a procédé également à une distribution de produits agro-alimentaires. Cette activité a permis aux bénéficiaires des petits ruminants d’être dotés en aliments pour leur cheptel. Ainsi, 50 bénéficiaires ont reçu, pour certains dans une situation d’extrême vulnérabilité, un sac de SPAI.

Un forage a été réhabilité dans le secteur N°1 de la ville de GoromGorom pour renforcer le dispositif d’accès à l’eau potable. La ville de Gorom-Gorom ne dispose pas d’un système d’adduction d’eau potable. Les forages restent les principales sources d’approvisionnement en eau potable. »

ASSOCIATION DIZÉNIDANI

CAMP DE VACANCES

Après une année d’interruption, l’Association Dizénidani a pu relancer l’activité du Camp des vacances pour les élèves de Tiébélé qui se retrouvent dans un cadre de recréation, d’apprentissage et de sensibilisation autour des enjeux liés à l’environnement.

L’activité se tient annuellement depuis 2014. Voici les résultats de cette édition 2021, extraits du rapport dressé par l’Association Dizénidani.

« Pour débuter les cours, les enfants et les enseignants ont bénéficié d’une distribution de fournitures scolaires, composées de cahiers, de stylos et de craies. 74 enfants (44 filles et 30 garçons) ont pu prendre part à la présente édition.

Cette année, quatre activités principales étaient inscrites au programme : cours pédagogiques (français, mathématiques, sciences de la vie et de la terre) ; sensibilisation sur l’environnement et le changement climatique ; pratique du sport à travers l’Éducation physique et sportive (EPS) ; cours de chant et de théâtre.

Une activité de reboisement sous le slogan « Un enfant, un arbre » a constitué l’ultime étape de cette 7ème édition du camp de vacances.

Environ 300 pieds d’arbres fruitiers, médicinaux et ombrageux ont été plantés par les enfants et leurs parents, venus constater les bienfaits de l’initiative pour leurs enfants.

ASSOCIATION DIZÉNIDANI

CONCOURS DORA

« Dora » est une technique picturale utilisée dans la célèbre Cour Royale de Tiébélé, un site patrimonial du peuple Kassena qui met en valeur la richesse de l’architecture Gourunasi pour laquelle cette partie du pays est célèbre.

Durant le concours, organisé à Tiébélé par l’Association Dizénidani, les aïeules transmettent leur savoir-faire ancestral aux jeunes filles, les aidant aussi, au passage, à assumer leurs futures responsabilités sociales et domestiques. Le projet se veut garant d’une tradition centenaire transmise depuis des générations.

L’édition 2020 a dû être reportée à cause de la pandémie. Elle a eu lieu en avril 2021, avec la participation de dix lycées et en présence de la ministre de la Culture, des arts et du tourisme du Burkina Faso, Dr Foniyama Élise ILBOUDO/ THIOMBIANO.

Les jeunes filles étant venues de différents établissements, ce moment a été une belle occasion qui leur a permis de se rencontrer, de se familiariser et de cultiver un esprit de solidarité et éducatif ensemble. »

SURVEILLANCE DE LA QUALITÉ DE L’AIR

EN AMAZONIE

Le projet EducAir nous a été présenté en novembre 2020 par Igor Oliveira Ribeiro, ingénieur forestier et lauréat du programme de bourse du Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat (GIEC) soutenu par la Fondation Cuomo.

Le projet prévoit l’installation de capteurs dans 8 lycées autour de Manaus (la capitale de l’État de l’Amazonas) pour surveiller la dégradation de la qualité de l’air provoquée par les incendies dans la forêt amazonienne.

Grâce à des échanges constructifs engagés entre le promoteur du projet et la Fondation Cuomo, l’initiative a vu son champ d’action s’élargir. La proposition prévoit un partenariat avec les pompiers locaux, la distribution de masques lors de pics de pollution et l’instauration d’un protocole de mise à l’abri des élèves et des enseignants en cas d’alerte.

Le projet est étendu sur une période de 2 ans avec un budget de 50 000 €.

Le vieux Ficus Religiosa, connu sous le nom d’arbre de la Bodhi, sur le terrain du complexe scolaire de Kovalam. Le figuier sacré est considéré comme ayant une signification religieuse dans les trois grandes religions nées sur le sous-continent indien : l’hindouisme, le bouddhisme et le jaïnisme. 20 Years of Commitment

To mark Cuomo Foundation’s special milestone, we invited our collaborators and actors through the years to participte in a surprise celebration to salute Maria Elena Cuomo for her continued commitment to the Cuomo Foundation and to recall its actions and achievements. This joyous occasion of nearly 3 hours, held on 4th May 2021, crossed multiple international time zones and featured pre-recorded and live speakers.

PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD

In 2021, the Cuomo Foundation celebrated its 20th anniversary; it was founded by my late husband Alfredo Cuomo and myself in Monaco in 2001.

In normal circumstances, the Foundation and all of our partners, who have contributed to or been supported by our actions and initiatives over the years, would have loudly celebrated this milestone. Regrettably, our commemoration of this special event was subdued and forced to take place online; distant and apart from one another.

Nobody could have guessed that after the last two devastating years of the worldwide Covid epidemic, we would now be facing the serious possibility of a third world war in 2022.

Our personal experiences with the pandemic have varied greatly depending on our age, health and socio-economic status and location. Without a doubt, we are living in sad and catastrophic historical times.

How can we make sense of everything that has occurred?

As I write this introduction and try to focus on our positive actions in 2021, I would

also like to take this opportunity to reflect on what the Cuomo Foundation has managed to accomplish globally in its 20 years of service.

IN INDIA

Twenty years ago we began our humanitarian work and we started in India. We agreed to fund the building of a school for children who needed one. Since 2001, we have built 7 major school complexes with modern and separate sanitation facilities and boarding homes, all situated in Tamil Nadu. Thousands of children attend our schools built in disadvantaged rural and urban areas. Scholarships for further education have enabled 621 students, so far, to improve their prospects and futures.

As I look back on our achievements and accept the disappointments over the last 20 years, I see the difficulties facing the universe ahead, and I am confronted again with life’s most persistent question -why do we do this? ‘‘

Despite the fact that schools and colleges remained closed in 2021, relief aid packages and critical financial salary assistance for teachers allowed students to continue their education via remote learning.

IN AFRICA

For many years we have funded social, artistic and critical medical actions and projects across the continent of Africa. From young adult learning institutions in Mali, social welfare actions creating self-sufficient communities, local online news journals, the preservation of UNESCO recognized cultural heritage site of “Royal Court of Tiébélé” in Burkina Faso, to supporting Senegalese artists’ events in historic Saint Louis and to the multimillion funding of the CCPC in Dakar, Senegal; the very first purpose built Paediatric Cardiology Centre to operate in the entire West Africa region.

By early 2022, the Cuomo Cardio Paediatric Centre will have operated successfully on over 1,000 young patients - the lifesaving and lifechanging medical attention is transforming the futures of generations in Senegal and beyond.

IN EUROPE

In Italy, we have supported the Arts for many years with the pioneering Hobart Method dance work for the diversely-abled, the Cultural Association of Freyderyk Chopin for the International Roma Competition and more recently the National Academy of Dance with the Premio Roma Dance competition.

In 2021, the International Roma Piano Competition celebrated its 30th anniversary and we have supported this prestigious event since 2004.

IN MONACO

Since 2001, we’ve partnered with the Monaco Red Cross on a number of initiatives and projects, including specifically the Monaco Red Cross Scholarship Programme.

Over the last 20 years many charitable organisations have benefitted from our involvement including Princess Grace Dance Academy, Monaco Disease Power, Sainte Devote Challenge and No Finish Line.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

In partnership with the Prince Albert II Foundation we have co-funded the IPCC scholarship since 2013. This innovative programme enables gifted international doctorial students from less developed countries to research how to create sustainable solutions for climate changes in their own regions.

In 2021, we supported 7 new researchers for the 2021/23 IPCC Programme, we have now fully funded 23 scholarships since 2013.

These are just a few highlights of the work we’ve been doing since 2001. Other actions and collaborations have involved Cuba, Brazil, Cambodia, Vietnam and Haiti.

As I look back on our achievements and accept the disappointments over the last 20 years, I see the difficulties facing the universe ahead, and I am confronted again with life’s most persistent question - why do we do this?

The Cuomo Foundation remains a small private organisation but our goals and outlook are ambitious. As the world changes at a rapid pace, we aspire to evolve as well.

In conclusion, I will reiterate what I said last year because my feelings, and the Cuomo Foundation’s beliefs, have not changed in twenty years. We remain committed and engaged in our core actions to help those in need of a helping hand develop sustainable futures.

INTRODUCTION

The year 2021 appeared to signal the beginnings of a new era. But, like plants without water and light, the intentions and resolves inspired by the catastrophic COVID 19 outbreak have withered and faded....

Notwithstanding the number of dead, the disrupted educational pathways, and fatigued professionals, the same frenetic push to do more and quicker soon returned and prevails.

‘‘ It appears urgent to me that we project ourselves, study possible scenarios, and concretely build a future that will shelter life by answering the question: What kind of world do we want to move towards?

‘‘

Regardless, or perhaps because of this, the Cuomo Foundation has maintained its commitments and focused its efforts on education, health, climate research, and art.

And despite the restrictions, we were nevertheless able to commemorate the Cuomo Foundation’s 20th anniversary through digital means!

There were, of course, several difficulties in this environment.

Adversity on an individual and institutional level, but also progress and new challenges.

Over the last 20 years, the Cuomo Foundation has directed 24 million euros in operational expenditures to the 14 countries of intervention and 30 different

partners around the world, enabling it to fund 500 scholarship holders supported by the Monegasque Red Cross and also 500 scholarship recipients from the Cuomo Foundation’s schools in India, where over 3,500 students attend everyday.

Since its inauguration in 2017, 700 children and young adults have already been able to undergo successful heart surgery at the Cuomo Centre (CCPC) in Dakar, thus avoiding further deterioration of their condition or indeed death.

These are only a few examples of activities made against the odds to obtain a better understanding of the future.

This future is being studied in part by young researchers who have received grants from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Cuomo Foundation. There are currently 23 of them observing, analysing, and advancing knowledge about climate change mechanisms and their impact on our societies. If there is global agreement today on the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is far less clear that we are collectively aware of the risks that we will be unable to avoid even if we drastically and rapidly reduce our carbon footprint.

It appears urgent to me that we project ourselves, study possible scenarios, and concretely build a future that will shelter life by answering the question:

What kind of world do we want to move towards?

MONACO RED CROSS

The Cuomo Foundation has been a committed partner of the Monegasque Red Cross since its establishment in 2001. Many social and educational projects have been completed by the two organisations, some of which are still in operation.

The number of scholarships granted by the Monegasque Red Cross increased to 44 in 2021, due to the Cuomo Foundation’s sponsorship, with a total investment of €92,910 for 2021.

Since 2002, this historic partnership has supported 500 scholarship recipients, representing 1.16 million euros in funding from the Cuomo Foundation.

‘‘I was extremely touched and deeply grateful to you for the Cuomo Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship enabled me to enter EFAP Paris, a school for which I had prepared throughout the year of the baccalaureate and for which I had passed the competitive exam at the beginning of the year. URGENT RELIEF AID IN 2020

FINANCIAL PACKAGE FOR VITAL PPE AT PRINCESS

GRACE HOSPITAL CENTRE

The Cuomo Foundation has cooperated with and supported the Monaco Red Cross for many years and 2020, as COVID-19 and the health crisis hit the Principality, was no exception. The Foundation agreed to donate $100,000 to the Red Cross Monaco specifically to fund the purchase and distribution of Personal Protective Equipment ; Medical garments, gloves, surgical masks and eye protection for the staff at the Princess Grace Hospital Centre. The CHPG was opened in 1902 and remains the only public hospital in Monaco.

PRACTICAL RESPONSE TO ASSIST THE STORM ALEX VICTIMS-VALLEE

DE LA ROYA

In October 2020 Storm Alex brought flooding and devastation to the villages and inhabitants of the Maritimes Alps, sweeping away entire roads and damaging homes. Vallée de la Roya, situated in the mountainous French-Italian border, became a disaster-stricken area. The Monaco Red Cross was mobilised to assess the needs and assist the victims. In response, the Cuomo Foundation funded the purchase of three all-terrain vehicles that would facilitate the transport of essential needs to the severely affected population even in the remotest areas. This humanitarian action was co-ordinated by the MRC and in early December the Foundation presented the vehicles to the town halls of Fontan, La Brigue and Tende, three of the municipalities worst affected.

IPCC SCHOLARSHIPS ON CLIMATE CHANGE RESEARCH

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), was established within the United Nations in 1988 ‘‘to provide comprehensive assessments of the state of scientific, technical and socio-economic knowledge about climate change, its causes, potential impacts and strategies’’. Its advisory body is composed of a group of international independent scientists.

In 2007, the IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside former US Vice President Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. The IPCC established a fellowship programme to support climate change research with funds from this award. Scholarships are available for PhD students from developing countries who are working on a thesis about climate change issues in their regions.

Every two years, a call for applications is issued to renew the subjects, which includes two years of follow-up and financial support. The Cuomo Foundation has supported this programme since 2013.

In March 2021, the Foundation selected, from the IPCC pre-approved list of applicants, seven research projects proposed by PhD students from Benin, Burkina Faso, China, Colombia, Ethiopia and Senegal.

Since 2013, a total of 23 successful doctoral students have benefited from the support of the Cuomo Foundation.

The Cuomo Foundation’s involvement has evolved significantly over the last several years, with students being followed up on even after their own initial programme award has ended. Some of these successful doctorate graduates have subsequently applied directly for Cuomo Foundation funding to continue research in their chosen fields or to apply their findings to the benefit of their communities. The Foundation has agreed to fund some of these initiatives as illustrated on page 112 on this report.

LA MAISON D’AMÉLIE

In 2012, the Cuomo Foundation assisted in funding the construction of “La Maison d’Amélie” for the Monaco Disease Power Association. The complex was inaugurated in 2013 as a respite residential home specifically for young people with disabilities and their families. It is situated in Annot in the Alpesde-Haute-Provence department.

This innovative project expanded in 2018 with the construction of an additional annex lodge, “La Maison des Copains”, supported by the Foundation.

The project’s managing association, Monaco Disease Power, faced a high cancellation rate in 2020 and 2021 as a result of the pandemic’s health limitations, and the Cuomo Foundation’s support became critical to accomplish a balanced budget.

SAINTE DÉVOTE CHALLENGE

This annual event promotes the idea of ‘Rugby for All’ and was established in 2010 between the town of Lucciana in Corsica and the Principality of Monaco around the natural link of the shared patron saint of Sainte Devote.

The number of participating teams has grown over the years, and now around 20 teams from different countries compete in the mixed U12 category, making it the most important world competition in its category.

The organisers’ objective has always been to allow children to learn about diverse cultures and to venture away from their own environment in order to broaden their experiences. All of this is accomplished through the use of a shared language of smiles and fun activities. Inclusive workshops for children with disabilities, whatever the disparities may be, reflect this motivation. Since 2013, the Foundation has been a supporter of this initiative.

‘‘ROMA’’ INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION

The Roma International Piano Competition was established in 1990 by the Associazione Culturale “Fryderyk Chopin” of Rome an association founded and led by Maestro Marcella Crudeli. The competition is presented every year in the Italian capital.

Since 2004, the Cuomo Foundation has sponsored this international cultural event as a partner of the “Fryderyk Chopin” Association.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 event due to the pandemic, the 30th edition of the competition was held in Rome from November 4 - 16, 2021. Over 100 young pianists from around the world participated at the Chiostro dei Genovesi in Trastevere, the ancient heart of Rome.

The closing gala night of this classical event was held at the Palladium Theatre of the University of ‘‘Rome Tre’’ on 17 November.

The winner of the Chopin Grand Prix was Mr Slava Guerchovitch a French pianist born in Monaco. The ‘Special Alfredo and Maria Elena Cuomo Prize’, worth 5,000 euros was awarded to mark the 30th edition. Mr Ivan Basic from Serbia received this “coup de coeur” award for his performance of Piotr Ilitch Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, op.23.

ITALIAN NATIONAL DANCE ACADEMY

PREMIO ROMA DANZA

The Accademia Nazionale di Danza is a prestigious dance institution within the Italian university system. It was officially created in 1948, transforming a structure founded in 1940 by the Russian dancer Jia Ruskaja, and affiliated at the time to the Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica.

The worldwide competition ‘Premio Roma Danza’ founded in 2001 within the Academy, invites each year young international dancers to compete against their generation’s best.

For the second year in a row and due to the continued restrictions, Premio Roma Danza 2021 was again held exclusively online with entrants submitting and uploading Video Dance segments.

With the involvement of all the municipalities of Rome a new event was established for the 2021 event ; its objective was to promote young Romans’ creativity while also emphasizing their relationship with their birthplace through geography, history and socio-cultural factors.

The special ‘Alfredo and Maria Elena Cuomo’ prize, established in 2020, was awarded in 2021 to wheelchair user Samuele Soddu. His video-dance work entitled ‘Le Memorie della Musica’ was recognised for its creativity and resilience.

The jury members and select guests were present for the closing ceremony, which took place on July 12th. It was streamed live on social media.

‘‘20 years of renaissance in the field of education in Tamil Nadu’’

Mr. Alfredo Cuomo and Mrs. Maria Elena Cuomo from Rome first visited India in 1999. They had come for their vacation and stayed at Fisherman’s Cove at Kovalam at Chennai. While they went on a visit to a church nearby, they happened to come across an old school building and an orphanage which were in a dilapidated condition.

Though they had come on a vacation, it laid the substance for their calling to serve the underprivileged which led to the birth of Cuomo Foundation, which was officially established in 2001, with the motto “The Art of Education is Education of the Heart”.

The vision of the Foundation was to educate the underprivileged as it would pave way for their wellbeing and they in turn would help the others who are in need. Mr. Alfredo Cuomo gave a major portion of his wealth to build and develop the Foundation which has served thousands of underprivileged.

They commenced their mission in Kovalam, which then was under the Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore and later in the year 2002 the diocese of

Chingleput was bifurcated thereby extending the mission to the diocese of Chingleput.

Mission begun:

They started with a Girl’s Hostel in the year 2002 and an Old Age Home for the men, which extended to a Boy’s Hostel and later in 2004 to St. Joseph’s Hr. Sec. School, catering to 2500 students at Kovalam and another Boy’s Hostel at KG Kandigai.

In 2005, the R.C. Hr. Sec. School was started at Sendivakkam and in the very next year the Cathedral Free Primary School was started at Santhome, educating 800 students.

Their service extended to additional Home for Boys and Home for Girls along with a Multipurpose Hall at Sendivakkam. In KG Kandigai, they came up with another Girl’s Hostel and at Kovalam, the Mount Carmel Nursery and Primary School was started, teaching 500 students.

The Cuomo Foundation Trust of India was established in 2008. Unfortunately, God took back His son Alfredo Cuomo in 2009. But the service was continued by his wife Mrs. Maria Elena Cuomo, who became the President of Cuomo Foundation and continued the service to mankind, by developing the existing infrastructure through built construction of additional school buildings at Kovalam and Computer Center at KG Kandigai.

She also brought in additional facilities of van and generators for the Mercy Home. Competitions were conducted for the students of Cuomo Schools and mid-day meal shed was inaugurated in 2015. She has metamorphosed the traditional outlook of Cuomo Foundation and its activities. She has professionally handled the projects with a future vision.

From 2019, the foundation went in for a global approach making the Amala Annai Higher Secondary School, Mambakkam, a green school by introducing soil preservation measures, planting saplings, and using recycled glass, aluminum and steel for their buildings. They also went in for sustainable energy source and water practice.

The same year, in recognition of the commendable works by the Cuomo Foundation, the diocese of Chingleput changed the name of the school from R.C. Higher Secondary Schools into Alfredo Cuomo Higher Secondary school. The foundation extended their service to the society around, going beyond the schools and hostels, by providing Covid relief material to the under privileged children in the remote schools of Mylapore and the same was distributed to

ST. JOSEPH’S HIGHER SEC. SCHOOL, KOVALAM

Academic year 2021 was begun in the month of September 2021 instead of June due to Covid 19 pandemic effect.

Students came with fresh mind and thought after a gap of one year break. Students had activities like Teacher’s Day celebration, Twining schools (exchange programme), interactive session with Loyola college students with regard to precautionary measures to refrain from Covid-19.

They also participated in a campaign had cleaning of the beach and an industrial visit to AMEET Maraine college.

Due to Covid-19, the Government Exam Board allowed all eligible students to pass without taking regular exams. The 12th standard students got their results based on their average mark taken from previous years. i.e. of 10th &11th standard.

ST. CHARLES HIGHER SEC. SCHOOL, KG KANDIGAI

St. Charles Higher Secondary School was reopened on the first of September 2021 and the school management distributed books and sweets to the students as part of their welcome celebration.

Teacher’s day was held in style. The school management instructed the students on the importance of farming, and they were given practical training in the fields. Aid Relief works had been carried out during Covid 19 for the village people in KG Kandigai.

Children’s Day was filled with festive fun. Vaccination was given to all the students as part of Covid-19 precautionary measure.

Christmas day was celebrated at the end of their half yearly holidays. Students excelled in their academic studies, though Covid-19 affected their schooling. The Management made all the necessary arrangements to maintain the safety of the children in the campus.

Amala Annai Higher Secondary School started this year 2021 on a happy note.

The reason for inaugurating a school was due to the inclusion of 12th standard students. The first batch of students entered into 12th standard and passed out with 100% exam results.

During this Pandemic situation, the village people were distributed with relief materials and the school was kept intact since it was inaugurated in the year 2019.

During this year 2021, the school management organized training programme for the teachers via Zoom or Meet. Students after coming to school had been vaccinated and the school also had organized regularly the Parents meet to follow the students.

ROSHAN AND FAMILY

In the year 2008, a very young boy Roshan Susairaj from Chennai suffered the loss of his lower limb. The extent of the amputation and a badly ill-fitting prosthetic leg further added to his health complications. When he was 10 years old the Foundation was introduced to Roshan and began contributing to the young boy’s recovery and rehabilitation. He was fitted with a correct femoral prosthesis in 2013 and provided with appropriate physiotherapy.

He, his elder sister, Jenifer, and mother are given full financial and emotional support by the Foundation towards their educational and medical assistance. Now Jenifer is working in HDFC bank after completing her Masters in Commerce and is doing Masters in Business Administration at present. Now Roshan is doing his second year Bachelor degree in Computer Science happily.

It can be summed up that the Cuomo Foundation has been able to change the lives of thousands of individuals through its amenity in the field of education, which is the root of knowledge and providing better citizens who would spread compassion to the world around making it a better place to live in.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR EX SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT

Subash Chandra Bose, a former scholarship student in Sendivakkam school’s ‘‘Alfredo Cuomo Scholarship’’ 2019-2021 programme, requested the support of the Cuomo Foundation for assistance with training to become a police officer.

As a consequence of this support, the student was able to train at the Angal Karur Police Academy in Chennai and gain new skills for his professional assessment. He awaits the results of the final exam, which will determine his professional future.

‘‘…I was part of the institution for 6 months, I attended police training and as well as theory classes. The atmosphere of the institution was very good and pleasant. And my batch had around 80-85 students and they are also have incredible helping mind. The staffs and faculties were skillful and motivating, the faculty conducting the class are extremely excellent. Especially our history teacher the mnemonics techniques are very helpful to us to remember the history entire concepts and especially dates.

MRS SABINE STEINER - A LOYAL ANNUAL SUPPORTER OF THE ALFREDO CUOMO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME IN INDIA

In 2006, Mrs Sabine Steiner accompanied members of the Cuomo Foundation to Chennai to attend the opening ceremonies for the Cuomo Foundation funded built Cathedral Free School in Santhome district of Chennai and the new residential Home for Boys and Girls at the Alfredo Cuomo Higher Sec. School in Sendivakkam.

Through the Foundation, Mrs Steiner met the students attending St Joseph’s Higher Sec. School in the Kovalam compound and was introduced to the Alfredo Cuomo Scholarship programme.

Mrs Steiner was impressed and moved to donate and contribute to the futures of these young adults.

Amongst them was Mr Antony Raj, a graduate of St. Joseph’s higher secondary school in Kovalam, who received his BSc. in 2009 and went on to work for Tata Consultancy, then Cognizant, an IT firm, before relocating his family to Riyadh to work as a Data Scientist for Masterworks.

Mrs Steiner’s continued support has assisted scholarship students to graduate, become self-sufficient, and be positive role models for their families.

The President, Members of the Board and the Executive Director would like to thank Mrs Steiner for her goodwill, trust and consistency as we approach this significant year in the Cuomo Foundation’s history. She has personally donated over 23,000 euros to fund the higher education of approximately 30 deserving young scholarship students.

THE CUOMO PAEDIATRIC CARDIAC CENTRE (CCPC), DAKAR

‘‘Autonomy,

a complex subject’’

The Covid 19 pandemic has had many consequences on everything, everywhere, and obviously on the functioning of the Cuomo Cardio-Pediatric Centre in Dakar.

First of all, the human consequences have upset the entire organisation of the structure which, for urgent health needs, has seen the CCPC resuscitation unit changed: the only resuscitation unit equipped with modern equipment in the whole of Senegal (ventilators, permanent electronic monitoring, trained nursing staff) which has been transformed into a reception centre for serious patients with Covid-19.

Between the complete cessation of cardiac activity and the resumption, sometimes limited by the absence of nursing staff with Covid, the flow of patients operated on decreased significantly in 2021, reaching the number of 122 heart operations.

We have taken advantage of this reduced activity to set up a modern and efficient computerised monitoring system called Cardio Report (costing €220,000). This system not only allows for real-time monitoring of patients throughout their course, from the consultation, then at the various stages; from the operating theatre, in intensive care and finally in hospitalisation, as well as the tracing of all the necessary equipment, for each patient. This tool therefore makes it possible to know the state of each person operated on and to follow the patients over the long term, which makes it possible to know which pathology poses a problem and to remedy it quickly.

This follow-up also has a medium-term academic goal, which is to be able to publish in scientific reviews and to present series of patients at major medical congresses. This same computer equipment allows for the management of stocks (particularly important in cardiac surgery) as well as that of consumed drugs. Finally, computerisation allows for the management of the maintenance of equipment, which is essential and costly in a state-of-theart surgical centre.

At the same time, we have also helped recruit a Director dedicated to the Cuomo Centre with the help and consent of our Senegalese partners. The role of this specific Director is to structure the expenses and to know the real cost

per patient and no longer as a fixed price as previously.

In 2021 the Cuomo Foundation invested 220,491 Euros in this structure. The monthly activity reaches us as seen in this diagram 1.

The cumulative expenditure is visible year by year (see diagram) and amounts to more than 7 million Euros since the beginning.

This year 2021 also marks the end of the contractual partnership with the ‘Chain of Hope’ for joint management of the project and current expenditure.

We continue to discuss with the ‘Chain of Hope’ to act harmoniously, but each one separately and in a complementary way by continuing our financial involvement which is decreasing to let Senegal take in hand this unique structure and become autonomous. The goal is on the way to being reached.

AWA GUEYE

Awa Gueye is a Senegalese student who received heart surgery in Dakar in 2012 as part of a humanitarian mission organised by Chaîne de l’Espoir and the Cuomo Foundation.

After a successful recovery, she was able to return to school and finish her education.

In 2017, Awa applied to the Foundation for financial assistance to pursue higher studies in Applied Biology and Chemical Engineering, with the help of this scholarship, she was able to complete a Higher Diploma in Technology (HDT).

In 2021, she was awarded a second scholarship to continue her studies with a Professional Degree in Biological Engineering and Biotechnology. This course will enable her to increase her skills and assist her professional integration in this complex field.

DE SAINT-LOUIS

The Senegalese artistic group ‘Ndar créations’ founded ‘‘Itinéraires Artistiques de Saint-Louis’’ in 2013 as a communal visual arts show.

It takes place every year in the northern Senegalese port city of Saint-Louis. The Cuomo Foundation supported the 7th edition of the exhibition, which was held at the ‘Centre de Recherches et de Documentation du Sénégal’ (CRDS/ ex-IFAN Museum of Saint-Louis) from June 6 to June 30, 2021.

The participants were chosen based on their work portfolios that were submitted. For the 2021 edition, 28 artists were chosen. They displayed 56 works, 11 of which were purchased. Mr. Abdoulaye Diop, Senegal’s Minister of Culture and Communication, and Mr. Mansour Faye, Senegal’s Minister of Infrastructures, Land Transport, and Opening Up, who is also the Mayor of Saint-Louis, were present for the opening. The exhibition drew a total of 1,510 visitors.

At the same time, two plastic arts workshops for students from the region were held. Young people were educated about the hazards of plastic and how to recover it in the process of artistic production during this session.

GROUPEMENT ZEINE

Since 2010, the Cuomo Foundation has been a partner of The Zeine Association, a grassroots organisation that actively promotes social projects to benefit its predominantly agricultural farming community in Gorom-Gorom, the capital of the Oudalan Province, in Northern Burkina Faso.

The Cuomo Foundation has assisted in funding critical local projects such as the drilling of numerous boreholes and the implementation of literacy programmes. In 2019, the Foundation agreed to support a new community led economic and social development initiative that involved the purchase and distribution of goats to vulnerable households. In a social context the goats represent, beyond their agri-food asset, a form of currency thus creating valuable economic platforms for households.

The initiative aimed, among other things, to strengthen local communities’ resilience in the face of climate change and food insecurity.

In 2021, the Cuomo Foundation approved a new phase of this programme for the benefit of internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently living in the province of Oudalan. This latest collective project of the Zeine Association and the Cuomo Foundation aims to improve the financial autonomy of internally displaced people, such as indigenous communities or pastoralists, who have been displaced and forced to relocate internally because their migration routes have been blocked by conflict, landmines, or insecurity.

“The Foundation’s assistance in 2021 was aimed at creating a herd for 84 vulnerable IDP households in Gorom-Gorom. 50 commune women were trained in herd management techniques, animal vaccination, feeding and hygiene, and reproduction.

The Pasteurellosis vaccine was administered to 250 goats. All these goats were also tagged to facilitate identification and monitoring.

The Zeine Association also distributed animal feed products. This action enabled the beneficiaries of the small ruminants to be provided with feed for their livestock. Thus, 50 beneficiaries, some of whom were in an extremely vulnerable situation, each received a bag of SPAI.

To improve access to drinking water, a borehole in Gorom-Gorom’s sector 1 was rehabilitated. There is no drinking water supply system in Gorom-Gorom. Boreholes remain the primary source of drinking water.’’

HOLIDAY CAMP

After a year of suspended activities due to Covid, the Dizénidani Association was able to relaunch the Holiday Camp activity for young Tiébélé students, who are involved in a framework of recreation, learning, and environmental awareness-raising.

Since 2014, the event has been held annually. The following are the results of the 2021 edition, as reported by the Dizénidani Association.

‘‘To start classes, children and teachers benefited from a distribution of school supplies, consisting of notebooks, pens and chalk. 74 children (44 girls and 30 boys) were able to take part in this edition.

This year, four main activities were included in the programme: educational classes (French, mathematics, life and earth sciences); awareness-raising on the environment and climate change; sports practice through Physical and Sports Education (PSE); song and drama classes.

A reforestation activity under the slogan ‘‘One child, one tree’’ was the final stage of this 7th edition of the summer camp. About 300 fruit, medicinal and shade trees were planted by the children and their parents, who came to witness the benefits of the initiative for their children.

DORA CONTEST

‘Dora’ is a decorative technique used at the famous Royal Court of Tiébélé, a Kassena historical monument, that displays the Gourunasi architecture for which this area of Burkino Faso is world renowned.

During the annual ‘Dora’ painting competition, which is organised by the Dizénidani Association in Tiébélé, the grandmothers pass on their ancestral knowledge and technique to the young girls, as well as supporting them in adopting their future social and domestic responsibilities. The project’s purpose is to preserve a centuries-old tradition that has been handed down through the generations.

The 2020 edition had to be postponed due to the outbreak. It took place in April 2021, with ten high schools taking part and the attendance of Burkina Faso’s Minister of Culture, Arts, and Tourism - Dr Élise Foniyama Ilboudo/Thiombiano.

AIR QUALITY MONITORING IN AMAZON

Igor Oliveira Ribeiro, a Brazilian forestry engineer and one of the former recipients of the Cuomo Foundation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Scholarship programme, presented the EducAir project in November 2020.

This scientific environmental initiative will position sensors in 8 high schools in and around Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas, to monitor air quality degradation caused by the Amazon forest fires.

The programme has expanded as a result of effective interaction between the project developer and the Cuomo Foundation. Consequently, a relationship with the local fire department is proposed, as is the distribution of masks during pollution peaks and the creation of a system for sheltering kids and teachers in the event of an alarm.

The project will be sustained for another two years with an overall budget of €50,000 funded by the Cuomo Foundation.
