FAFSA delayed due to changes in application

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is usually available on Oct. 1 each year, but the 2024-25 application won’t be available until December 2023.

The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarship has yet to set an exact date because it is a federal decision, and the office is waiting for the U.S. Department of Education to inform universities when the application will open.

The delay is due to changes to the form and the application process.

“The FAFSA Simplification Act represents a significant overhaul of the processes and systems used to award federal student aid starting with the 2024-25 award year,” according to The Federal Student Aid website.

The upcoming change will be the most significant change in the U.S. Department of Education’s application process in the last 40 years.

“They are changing the application itself and they are removing some components of the application.

They’ve added some components to the application and they are changing the methodology on how to determine the extent of financial aid,” Christine Lopez, the associate director of Financial Aid & Scholarships, said.

One significant change is replacing the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) with the Student Aid Index (SAI).

This is a change in the methodology used to determine the amount of financial aid. With the new method, the form does not consider the family size, it is using other rules to see if a student is eligible.

According to the Federal Student Aid website, another change is the expansion of access to Federal Pell Grants, the largest federal grant program offered to undergraduate students.

The purpose of the Pell Grant is to assist students from low-income households who display financial need through the FAFSA. It does not have to be repaid, except under certain circumstances.

Now, incarcerated students in federal and state penal facilities can receive a Federal Pell Grant.

The U.S. Department of Education will also remove some questions from the form, such as about the applicant’s gender, race, and drug convictions.

The form will be expanded to the 11 most common languages spoken

by English language learners, and applicants who cannot provide parental information will be able to complete the form.

“Through the years, there were complaints and concerns from students that it is difficult to complete the application,” Chad Morris, director of financial aid and scholarship for California State University, Bakersfield, said.

The goal is to reduce the number of questions and make it easier for students to complete the form.

By Autumn Layton, Features Editor and Jocelynn Landon, Photographer BE BOLD AND BE BRAVE Being forced out of the closet at 13 is not expected, but it is the way it happened for sociology major Angel Garcia. At 31, he is now out, loud, and proud about who he is.

Initially, Garcia said his foster parents were in denial, but as time went on, they became more accepting. Friends from high school were the first group of people to embrace him.

“Never be afraid of the reaction because it's temporary,” said Garcia.

INCLUSIVITY MATTERS IN THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY “The world needs to hear more stories about communities of color,” said Jeremiah Sataraka, Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies and co-chair of the LGBTQ+ PRIDE Faculty and Staff Affinity Group at CSUB. Sataraka identifies as a gay Samoan-Korean man.

Although their sexuality comes up, they lives their life as everyone else does.

Sataraka said there needs to be a conversation about the Western framework of how the LGBTQ+ community is presented. When communities are more inclusive about cultures and sexual identities, it can create a conversation and promote growth, Satakara said.

AS LONG AS YOU’VE GOT YOU, THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS

For CSUB Alumni Brianna Santaella, a club on campus, Club GEN, Gender Equality Now, helped them discover more of themself.

Coming from a traditional Latinx Catholic family, it was not the norm to be queer. It wasn’t until Santaella was in a visibly queer relationship that they had to tell their parents. Santaella was met with some pushback, but also support. There were people who Santaella calls their “chosen family,” who supported them every step of the way. Being one of the first in their family to be as open makes them proud.

“As long as you internally know yourself, you can laugh at anyone who says otherwise,” said Santaella.

JOURNEY TO CREATING LGBTQ+ REPRESENTATION ON CAMPUS When Kris Graffendorf, interim director of Undergraduate Advising, first applied to work at CSUB about ten years ago, a driving factor was the university's LGBTQ+ recognition.

Graffendorf got involved as a founding member of the LGBTQ+ Pride Faculty and Staff Affinity group on campus, introduced Lavender Graduation and evolved OUTober into a month-long celebration.

“They [students] can come to CSUB and be who they are,” said Graffendorf.

Graffendorf has stayed involved in LGBTQ+ groups and represented herself in the community to show students it's okay to be who they are.

She said when students are able to see faculty, staff, and the CSUB community involved, it creates a safer atmosphere.

I AM WHO I AM When Yelitza Amador Orozco, fourth-year biology major, came out, there was not a formal conversation. When they mentioned to their family they were nonbinary, their family did not take them seriously.

“I didn’t want to be seen or treated any differently because I’m the same old Yelitza you know and love,” said Orozco.

On the other hand, their friends were extremely supportive. They welcomed Orozco in and made them feel safe.

“There is nobody who reaffirms me more in my identity and belief than Loe [their friend], they are such a huge inspiration to me," said Orozco.

YOUR SAFETY IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS YOUR COMING OUT JOURNEY Ernesto Leon is a CSUB alumni with a bachelor’s in communications, and was the Digital Editor-in-Chief of The Runner.

He grew up in a Catholic family, and with that came hard conversations regarding the LGBTQ+ community.

A pivotal start to owning his identity as a gay man began when Leon saw people ‘out and proud’ and conversing with people going through the same thing. He encourages those coming out to their family to be patient and understand that they have to change their perspective of you.

“Only do [come out] if you know you’re going to be safe… your life is a lot more important,” said Leon.

COME OUT ON YOUR OWN TIME Jovanna Penuelas graduated from CSUB with a bachelor’s in psychology and is currently in the master’s program for school counseling.

She was in high school when she came out to her family.

Penuelas' older brother took it the hardest, but that didn’t last long. Her younger sister always knew, but her mother was a bit hesitant. Her mother’s main concern was how the world would treat her child.

“We have to understand that just because we’ve come to terms with who we are doesn’t mean that the people around us have to,” said Penuelas, “it’s not our job.”

Now, Penuelas receives nothing but love and support from her family and friends.

IDENTIFYING AS BISEXUAL DOESN’T MAKE ME ANY LESS OF THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY Kathleen “Katy” Hanson, religious studies and women and gender studies lecturer at CSUB, identifies as a bisexual woman. When she was a student at CSUB, it was just the beginning of finding who she was. As she entered graduate school, she was more confident in her identity, and now, as a faculty member, she is out. Given the topics in her class, her identity comes up when necessary.

There can be stigmas and biphobia towards individuals in the LGBTQ+ community who identify as bisexual, said Hanson. While Hanson understands the resentment bisexuals face, she said it can lead to biphobia and there should be conversations surrounding that topic.

Hanson reminds the LGBTQ+ that everyone’s identity in the community is valid and important.

Being gay and terrified at the movie theater

By EJ Martinez Feature Writer I would like to, if I may, take you on a strange journey of fear and sexuality. While some may stay away from horror because of how it terrifies and disturbs them, horror can be a great comfort for those who have been demonized or made terrified of themselves by society. Horror has always been a way to help explore ourselves and understand our fears, both individual and societal, to help comprehend and understand who we are and why this thing terrifies us.

However, what happens when what we are terrified of is ourselves, who we are and what we are becoming?

“A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge,” directed by Jack Sholder, is a subtle exploration of the fear of oneself.

meeting strange characters and being introduced to Dr. Frank-NFurter’s newest creation, Rocky, a muscular man and man-made lover for Frank-N-Furter.

The flick ends up being a celebration of the sexual revolution that partakes in the sexual exploration with the intertangling of romance, sexual escapades between men and women, men and men, and music numbers of being lost in eroticism, flesh, and excitement of crossing sexual and gender binaries.

Though, not all movies share the same view and instead reinforce the demonization and discrimination of LGBT people, especially the trans community, with movies such as “Silence of the Lambs” and “Sleepaway Camp.” Both films, while popular among horror movies, have their roots in the fear and anxiety of trans individuals and the supposed danger they impose on women. These barbaric views in the media have caused eruptible damage for both the horror and trans communities.

However, some moviemakers have sought to go against this portrayal and view those of trans or nonbinary identity in a more sympathetic light, such as in “Seed of Chucky,” which does have a murderous doll as the trans individual, yet presents them and their story more sympathetically, in which the audience hopes for their success and inner peace.

While horror still has a long way to go, there is still that comfort that horror brings to the gay community and outsiders of the traditional sexual and gender binary. And with the introduction of indie horror and arthouse films within cinema, more filmmakers will have a chance to explore the fears of sexuality and gender, change what has previously been demonized, and express the fear and anxiety of the LGBT community on the big screen.

He told me he just wants to be friends, and he is genuinely a good person, but what do I do?

I’ve never talked to anyone like that before.

I’m hurt, but I also know ima be okay. I think being queer just adds a whole other level to this. We don’t get the high school romance, we rarely get to live out a romance story. This was the first time I got one, it was the first time I kissed the same boy like 10 times, held hands, kissed in public, we did so many first together. I’m a little lost and confused, what should I do to feel better, but I also want to keep this relationship with him since he’s become such a part of my life, is that healthy?”

Thank you for your vulnerability! I hear you, and there’s no judgment from me! I am also queer myself, so I see you and hear you!

To start with the end and work my way up, there are no correct answers to whether we should keep a particular person in our lives because all our situations are different. Furthermore, as you wrote there is an extra layer with being queer.

First off, don’t stay with someone just because the relationship was once important to you. You deserve someone who loves you back, even with being queer and not having the same experiences as heterosexual relationships.

I think of a quote from “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” that says, “We accept the love that we think we deserve.”

I hope you take this quote as you feel it means. Still, this tells me that we often allow people to stay in our lives, whether in a romantic relationship or in a friendship, because we think that that is all we are going to get or deserve.

If you feel this boy is important to keep in your life, then I do not see any reason why you cannot keep him a part of your life. Just know that you are worth so much more than you think and deserve people who value and care for you. There is nothing wrong with knowing that someone was important to you during that time and taught you a lesson, but removing them from your life does not mean they are a bad person, nor are you. Setting those boundaries for ourselves helps us grow and open ourselves to healthier relationships in the future.

The film is about Jesse Walsh, played by Mark Patton. Patton moves with his family into the home of Nancy Thompson, the survivor of the first movie, where Freddy Kruger strikes back by using his body as a host to carry out his vendetta against the kids of Elm Street.

While not blatant on an exploration of sexuality, the film does carry undertones of the fear of homosexual identity with the actions, underlining plot, and scenes within the flick heavily suggesting the terror that comes with the discovery that you are not straight and fears of the 1980s of homosexuality with scenes of going to gay bars, gym showers, wearing leather, and sleepovers at a friend’s house.

However, some horror films decide not to entrap themselves in fear of identity but to rejoice in the discovery of identity—being who you are.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” directed by Jim Sharman, is a celebration of sexuality and freedom while staying in a dark mansion with such a strange and fabulous host. When an engaged couple gets a flat tire, they find shelter in the dark mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, played

by Tim Curry, a transvestite scientist. Throughout the night they lose their innocence,

CSUB Superfan brings spirit everywhere he goes

For many people, the feeling of being in their seat and cheering on their favorite team is an experience that isn’t easily put into words.

California State University, Bakersfield Athletics is the core of Bakersfield’s sports scene.

Many high school and middle school sports teams will gather to cheer on ’Runners at various games. Elementary students come to the university for Education Day,” where parents bring their children to see the Roadrunners in real life.

There is one person that you are guaranteed to see at a CSUB game, and that is Jordan Lovett who goes by the name “CSUB’s Superfan.”

You might have spotted him before, dressed in his blue suit with a bright yellow CSUB t-shirt, yellow wig, blue or yellow basketball shorts, and occasionally a CSUB scarf.

Superfan, who dresses from head to toe in the university’s colors, has been expressing his spirit since 2010.

“I just love athletics and sporting events and being that person to bring that energy to games, someone that can be there for the team. I just love sports,” said Superfan.

Superfan’s energy in the stands can’t be missed. He

never skips a chance to get up and dance when the music is on during games, yelling his heart out from his seat, and encouraging fans around him to get “a little bit rowdy.” His spirit doesn’t stop, regardless of whether the game is going good or bad.

“Try to always have good energy even if you’re losing a game. Be focused that it isn’t over until the end, miracles and crazy things can happen in sports all the time. Cheer on your team and teammates. Just give it your all,” said Superfan.

And Superfan sure gives it his all to get the crowd pumped, running up and down the stands – he is hardly

sitting in one spot. Superfan is one of the first in the stands to throw up the ’Runners’ hand sign to show the athletes that the crowd is supporting them.

“You never know the outcome. You come to play.

You don’t look at stats, and sometimes it outweighs it,” Superfan said.

Superfan shared the motivation behind his spirit for CSUB Athletics.

motivate them through up and downs of games. Like ‘hey there’s still someone in the crowd that still believes in us.’ I remember doing a cheer and getting the crowd going through the end,” Superfan said.

One cannot ignore the cheers that are usually started

by Superfan. He encourages students to come and support CSUB Athletics when they can.

The Runners compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. CSUB athletics also has promotions for students to receive.

“All events are free. Just knowing when the things are happening, they get to know it first. Members will get exclusive messages, they get it sent out first before all campus receives the message,” said CSUB spirit coordinator, Arthur Smith.

Students can sign up to stay informed on all things regarding athletics on campus through Runner Nation.

“It would be great to see more students,” Superfan said.

Students can witness Superfan’s energy, spirit, and being the loudest in the stands the next time they attend an athletics game.

Para muchas personas, la sensación de estar en su asiento y animando a su equipo favorito es una experiencia que no se puede expresar fácilmente.

Con la introducción de películas independientes de terror y arte, más cines tendrán la oportunidad de explorar los miedos de la sexualidad y el género y cambiar lo que antes se demonizaba y expresaba el miedo y la ansiedad de la comunidad LGBT en la pantalla grande.

“Me involucré en una situación amorosa por demasiado tiempo, duró 9 meses…

Todo estaba yendo bien hasta que este último mes noté que a él se le estaba acabando el amor. ¿El me dijo que nada más quería que fuéramos amigos, y que él realmente es una buena persona, pero que hago yo? Yo nunca he hablado con alguien de esa manera. Estoy dolida, pero también sé que voy a estar bien. Creo que ser queer solo le agrega otro nivel a esto. No obtenemos el romance típico de la escuela secundaria, muy rara mente podemos vivir una historia amorosa. Esta era la primera vez que obtuve una, fue la primera vez que bese a un chico como 10 veces, tomamos nuestras manos, nos besamos en público, hicimos tantos casos por primera vez juntos. ¿Estoy un poco perdida y confundida, que debo de hacer para sentirme mejor, pero también quiero quedarme con esta relación con él, ya que él se convirtió en parte de mi vida, esto es sano?

Para empezar con el final y hacer mi camino hacia arriba, no hay ninguna respuesta correcta la cual nos indiqué si debemos mantener a una persona en lo particular en nuestras vidas porque nuestras situaciones son diferentes. Además, como escribiste hay una capa extra al ser queer.

Primeramente, no te quedes con alguien solamente porque la relación una vez fue importante para ti. Tú te mereces a alguien que también te ame, aunque seas queer y no tengas las mismas experiencias como una relación heterosexual.

Yo pienso en las palabras de “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” las cuales dicen, “Nosotros aceptamos el amor que creemos que merecemos.”

Espero que tomes estas palabras como tú creas que significan. Aun, esto nos dice que típicamente permitimos que personas permanezcan en nuestras vidas, ya sea una relación amorosa o una amistad, porque nosotros pensamos que esto va a ser todo que vamos a recibir o que nos merecemos.

Si tú sientes que este chico es importante en tu vida, yo no veo una razón por la cual tú no puedas mantenerlo en parte de tu vida. Solo recuerda que tú vales mucho más que lo que tú piensas y mereces personas que te valoren y cuiden de ti. No hay nada malo en saber que alguien fue importante para ti durante un tiempo y te darán una lección, pero moverse de tu vida no significa que eres una mala persona, y no lo eres. Estableciendo estos límites para nosotros no ayuda a crecer y abrirnos a una relación más sana en algún futuro.

Si bien no es descarada en una exploración de la sexualidad, la película tiene matices del miedo a la identidad homosexual con las acciones, subrayando la trama y las escenas dentro de la película que sugieren en gran medida el terror que viene con el descubrimiento de que no eres heterosexual y los temores de la homosexualidad de la década de 1980 con escenas de ir a bares gay, duchas en el gimnasio, vestirse de cuero y fiestas de pijamas en casa de un amigo.

SE ATREVIDA Y SER VALIENTE No se espera que lo obliguen a salir del closet a los 13 años, pero así le sucedió al estudiante de sociología Ángel García. A sus 31 años, ahora está fuera y orgulloso.

Al principio, García dijo que sus padres adoptivos lo negaban, pero a medida que pasó el tiempo, se volvieron más tolerantes. Amigos de la escuela secundaria fueron el primer grupo de personas en aceptarlo.

“Nunca tengan miedo de la reacción porque es temporal”, dijo García.

LA INCLUSIVIDAD IMPORTA EN LA COMUNIDAD LGBTQ+ “El mundo necesita escuchar más historias sobre las comunidades de color”, dijo Jeremiah Sataraka, Profesor Asistente de Estudios Étnicos y co-presidente del Grupo de Afinidad LGBTQ+ PRIDE Facultad y Personal en CSUB. Sataraka se identifica como gay Samoano-Coreano.

Aunque su sexualidad sale a relucir, vive su vida como todos los demas.

Para Brianna Santaella, exalumne de CSUB, un club en el campus, Club GEN, Gender Equality Now, le ayudó a descubrir más de sí mismos.

Al provenir de una familia Católica, latina y tradicional, no era normal ser queer. No fue hasta que Santaella estuvo en una relación visiblemente homosexual que tuvo que decírselo a sus padres. Santaella recibió cierta oposición, pero también apoyo. Hubo personas a quienes Santaella llama su “familia elegida”, que le apoyaron en cada paso del camino. Ser uno de los primeros en su familia en ser tan abierto le enorgullece.

“Mientras te conozcas internamente, puedes reírte de cualquiera que diga lo contrario”, dijo Santaella.

CAMINO A LA CREACIÓN LGBTQ+ REPRESENTACIÓN EN EL CAMPUS Cuando Kris Graffendorf, director interino de Asesoramiento de Pregrado, solicitó por primera vez trabajar en CSUB hace unos diez años, un factor determinante fue el reconocimiento LGBTQ+ de la universidad. Graffendorf se involucró como miembro fundador del grupo LGBTQ+ Pride Faculty and Staff Affinity en el campus, presentó Lavender Graduación y convirtió OUTober en una celebración de un mes de duración.

“Pueden venir a CSUB y ser quienes son”, dijo Graffendorf.

Graffendorf se ha mantenido involucrada en grupos LGBTQ+ y se representó a sí misma en la comunidad para mostrarles a los estudiantes que está bien ser quienes son. Dijo que cuando los estudiantes pueden ver a los profesores, al personal y a la comunidad CSUB involucrados, se crea una atmósfera más segura.

SOY QUIEN SOY Cuando Yelitza Amador Orozco, estudiante de cuarto año de biología, se declaró no binario, no hubo una conversación formal. Cuando mencionó a su familia que era no binario, su familia no le tomó en serio.

“No quería que me vieran ni me trataran de manera diferente porque soy la misma Yelitza de siempre que conoces y amas”, dijo Orozco.

Por otro lado, sus amigos fueron un gran apoyo. Le dieron la bienvenida a Orozco y le hicieron sentir seguro.

“No hay nadie que me reafirme más en mi identidad y creencias que Loe, son una gran inspiración para mí”, dijo Orozco.

TU SEGURIDAD ES IGUAL DE IMPORTANTE COMO TU VIAJE DE SALIDA Ernesto León, exalumno de CSUB con licenciatura en comunicaciones, fue el editor en jefe digital de The Runner.

Creciendo en una familia Católica, generó conversaciones difíciles sobre la comunidad LGBTQ+. Un comienzo fundamental para asumir su identidad como hombre gay en la comunidad LGBTQ+ comenzó cuando León vio a personas “fuera y orgulloso”, y conversó con personas que estaban pasando por lo mismo. Él anima a quienes se sinceran con sus familiares a ser pacientes y comprender que tienen que cambiar su perspectiva sobre ellos.

“Sólo [salga] si saben que estarán a salvo... su vida es mucho más importante”, dijo León.

SAL A TU PROPIO TIEMPO Jovanna Peñuelas se graduó de CSUB con una licenciatura en psicología y actualmente se encuentra en el programa de maestría en consejería escolar. Estaba en la escuela secundaria cuando se lo contó a su familia. El hermano mayor de Peñuelas fue el que lo tomó más difícil, pero eso no duró mucho. Su hermana menor siempre lo supo, pero su madre dudaba un poco. La preocupación principal de su madre era cómo trataría el mundo a su hija.

“Tenemos que entender que el hecho de que hayamos llegado a un acuerdo con quiénes somos no significa que las personas que nos rodean tengan que hacerlo”, dijo Peñuelas, “no es nuestro trabajo”.

Ahora, Peñuelas no recibe más que amor y apoyo de su familia y amigos.

IDENTIFICARME COMO BISEXUAL NO ME HACE UNA PERSONA MENOS DE LA COMUNIDAD LGBTQ+ Katy Hanson, profesora de estudios religiosos y de mujeres y de género en CSUB, se identifica como una mujer bisexual.

Cuando era estudiante en CSUB, fue solo el comienzo de descubrir quién era ella. Cuando ingresó a la escuela de posgrado, tenía más confianza en su identidad y ahora, como miembro de la facultad, está fuera. Dados los temas de su clase, su identidad surge cuando es necesario.

Puede haber estigmas y bifobia hacia las personas de la comunidad LGBTQ+ que se identifican como bisexuales, dijo Hanson. Si bien Hanson comprende el resentimiento que enfrentan los bisexuales, dijo que puede conducir a la bifobia y que debería haber conversaciones sobre ese tema.

Hanson recuerda a la comunidad LGBTQ+ que la identidad de todos en la comunidad es válida e importante.

El Formulario Gratuito de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes, o FAFSA, generalmente está disponible el 1 de octubre de cada año, pero la aplicación de 2024-25 no estará disponible hasta diciembre de 2023.

La Oficina de Ayuda Financiera y Becas aún no ha fijado una fecha exacta porque se trata de una decisión federal. La oficina está esperando que el Departamento de Educación de los Estados Unidos informe a las universidades cuándo se abrirá la solicitud.

El retraso se debe a cambios en el formulario y en el proceso de solicitud.

"La Ley de Simplificación de FAFSA representa una revisión significativa de los procesos y sistemas utilizados para otorgar ayuda federal para estudiantes a partir del año de otorgamiento 2024-25", según el sitio web de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes.

El próximo cambio será el más significativo en el proceso de solicitud del Departamento de Educación de EE.UU. en los últimos 40 años.

"A lo largo de los años, ha habido quejas y preocupaciones de los estudiantes de que es difícil completar la aplicación", dijo Chad Morris, director de ayuda financiera y becas de la Universidad Estatal de California en Bakersfield.
