Ferrari is a two-time NCAA wrestling champion with an impressive, and questionable, background that has the campus curious about his comeback.

"In August 2022, Ferrari was arrested and charged with one felony count of sexual battery stemming from a July 2, 2022, incident at the home of a Stillwater female who accused him of performing unwanted sexual acts,” wrote The Oklahoman.

After she received personal attacks on social media, harassment, blame and threats to her career, with the consultation of her family, she decided to drop the case after a 15-month ordeal according to her District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas. Less than two weeks after the occurrence, OSU announced Ferrari was no longer a part of the wrestling team.

"The university has been made

aware of an alleged off-campus sexual assault involving a student. We support the investigation underway by the Stillwater Police Department, and we will cooperate with them," a statement from the university said.

"These are serious allegations, and we have processes in place to address any violations of OSU policy," said a spokesperson for Oklahoma State to NBC News.

During a match at the Soldier Salute Tournament in Iowa in December 2023. Ferrari competed as an unattached athlete and was disqualified after throwing a punch during a match, doing the splits, and making provocative gestures towards the crowd.

This timeline has led to curiosity regarding the circumstances of Ferrari’s departure and what it means for his future at CSUB. Students at CSUB who have classes with Ferrari have also raised some concerns, speaking up about their own discomfort of having classes with the fellow Roadrunner.

“As a student I feel like he’s disgusting” said a CSUB student that asked that her name not be used.

“Just knowing the things he’s done and, like, him just getting away with it with, like, a slap on his wrist, just because he’s an athlete. So what he can throw someone?... that doesn’t make anyone special.”

Harper takes office, determined to make CSUB first choice for Kern County Juver Gonzalez, News Reporter

Since being selected as Cal State Bakersfield’s sixth president, Vernon B. Harper Jr. has made it clear that he wants every student that graduates from Kern County schools to look at CSUB as their first choice.

Harper had been acting as interim president since the retirement of former President Lynnette Zelezny on Dec. 31, 2023. Prior to this, he served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at CSUB. “We’re focused on becoming Kern County’s university,” said Harper.

Harper plans to maintain and further increase the reach with K-12 schools in the county, in hopes that every student in the region looks at CSUB as their first choice. He acknowledged the diverse population of Kern County and hopes to reflect the diversity on campus.

“One of the things about Bakersfield is that it has a true kaleidoscope of culture... we want to represent that on campus both physically and through our curriculum,” said Harper.

CSUB is working on ways to physically represent the diversity on campus as well as in the curriculum.

During Harper’s tenure as Provost, he helped bring the Umoja Black Student Success program to CSUB. In response to recent discussions about potentially removing diversity, equity and inclusion programs from college campuses, Harper wants to assure students that these initiatives will not be eliminated from the CSUB campus. DEI is a choice, and CSUB has decided to maintain these programs.

“That’s something that’s a charge to all of us,” said Cantrell, referring to Harper’s vision for CSUB. “We need to continue to provide positive experiences for our students, our faculty and staff so that the culture at CSUB is one that... people want to be a part of.”

In terms of student life, CSUB has historically been involved with its community bringing students from around the region for campus tours and hosting community events.

Recently CSUB celebrated Latinx Heritage Month, holding various events to celebrate Latinx cultures on campus.

Change is coming to The Marketplace; could apartments replace the theater?

Hailey Milburn, Staff Writer The recent demolition of The Marketplace’s well-known fountain on Ming Avenue has raised questions about the shopping center’s future.

While some Bakersfield residents are excited about the possibility of upcoming changes, others are concerned.

The Marketplace has been a community staple since the mid-1990s for residents, whether stopping for a bite to eat, catching a Sunday movie matinee or relaxing by the fountain.

In July, the Bakersfield City Council approved zoning changes in The Marketplace, which could include multi-family units. The recent decision has sparked the curiosity of many locals that want to know what will happen to Edwards Cinemas, and other businesses in the area.

“It’s a very important part of Bakersfield... it’s been here for as long as I can remember... I come here often to hang out with my friends, and I feel like it would be a huge void if it were gone,” said Wesley Fambrough, Bakersfield College student who was waiting to see a movie at Edwards Cinemas.

Edwards Cinemas is one of only five movie theaters in Bakersfield, and

remains a popular place for residents to see films, especially those residing in the southwest part of town. If Edwards Cinemas gets torn down to make way for new apartment buildings, Bakersfield will reduce to four movie theaters. This leaves many residents no choice but to travel to a different location to see their next favorite flick.

There isn’t a lot of data on how many movie theaters a city should or can feasibly maintain according to its population; however, California has the highest number of movie theaters, 592 out of 2,278 in the country, according to IBISWorld.com.

San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles are among the cities with the most movie theaters, averaging about 30; their populations are more than two times that of Bakersfield.

However, other Southern Californian cities with similar population counts, such as Fresno and Sacramento, appear to have at least six to eight local cinemas.

According to the Kern Council of Governments, Bakersfield doesn’t have enough homes to support the population and meet the demand for more affordable housing. The

Edwards Cinemas at The Marketplace on Ming Avenue may be replaced by apartments.

Bakersfield Affordable Housing Strategy included recommendations such as locating where new residences can be built for developing more affordable housing. “Homelessness and affordable housing are major issues here,” said CeCe Packham, a Bakersfield native of 42 years. “Housing is necessary; movie theaters are not. Four theaters

seem excessive, so we can definitely go without the fifth.”

It is unclear what the future holds for Edwards Cinemas and other businesses in The Marketplace, but residents can find current updates on The Marketplace website. The Runner reached out to The Marketplace owners, First Washington Reality for more details but did not receive a response.

The ‘X’ factor: Embracing diversity or oversimplifying identity?

Its growing usage in media, academia and everyday conversations has generated discussions about the gender-neutral alternative for Latino and Latina.

The term Latinx aims to be more inclusive of all gender identities within the Latin American community.

However, while this term resonates with some, it also sparks resistance in others.

Cal State Bakersfield recently celebrated Latinx Heritage Month, which raises the question: Who really identifies as Latinx?

How do CSUB students, staff and faculty feel about the term? El Veloz conducted an anonymous survey to find out.

Of the 110 respondents, 72 identified as Latino/a/x/e. About a quarter of that number, 19, said they identified as Latinx, and 18 said they sometimes identified as Latinx.

Others believe the term Latinx is being imposed on Latin-American communities and does not fit with the Spanish phonetic structure, given that it is a gendered language.

“It doesn’t feel right to replace Latino/a with Latinx as it defies the whole Spanish language that is dependent on masculine and feminine nouns,” said an anonymous individual who filled out the survey.

Maria F. Rosas, a senior majoring in Psychology, said that when she first started hearing the term Latinx it bothered her, and while she has now come to terms with it, she still prefers to identify as Latina.

Despite the controversies, there are those who are in favor of more gendered inclusive terms in Spanish.

he understands that the term can be difficult for some to pronounce, that shouldn’t be an excuse.

“How is Mexico’s national oil company called? Pemex. The giant juice of Mexico, what’s it called? Jumex,” said Villagran.

He said that maybe it’s because of México’s relationship with the United States but that the “x” is already a part of the culture and that he will always defend the term and the minorities it represents, in this case non-binary individuals and women.

The term Latino is considered the neutral default usage but it leaves women in the shadows. All the neutral terms in Spanish are still masculine terms. The term Latinx

is supposed to be inclusive towards women too, but not all women feel that way.

“It made me think that to have the ‘x,’ we are all the same, and I don’t feel the same because I am a woman,” said Rosas.

Another issue people have with the term is that it seems to put millions of people into a single category. However, this is not the only term that does this—Latino, Latina, Hispanic, these are all common terms that seek to categorize multiple diverse communities into a single category.

“I feel like it adds a label to me that ignores my individualistic cultural heritage. For people that identify as neither Latino or Latina, they can still be Mexican/ Cuban/ etc. Personally, I feel almost insulted being brought into an even more general group,” said an anonymous individual who filled out the survey.

Villagrán explained that while these terms can be very useful, especially for political goals, it is also incredibly complicated to categorize millions of people worldwide.

It is important to highlight that the term Hispanic cannot be used interchangeably with the terms Latino/a/x/e, as they do not have the same meaning.

The survey by El Veloz showed that, out of the 110 individuals who completed the survey, only 55 people reported understanding the difference between the terms Hispanic and Latino/a/x/e.

All of this is complicated by the fact that Latino, Hispanic and related terms are often confused.

The main difference between these terms is that Hispanics are from Spanish-speaking countries but excludes indigenous populations and Brazilians. On the other hand, Latinos are from Latin American countries. For example, Spaniards are considered Hispanics and not Latinos, while Brazilians are Latinos but not Hispanics.

Villagrán explained that sometimes it worries him that these terms are erasing identities that might not be as big.

“Many times, when people say Latino, I think they are really referring to maybe the Mexican and not the Puerto Rican or not the Dominican,” said Villagrán.

“Maybe Monday I’ll identify as Chicano, maybe Tuesday I’ll identify as Latino or Wednesday as Latinx; simply because I have the privilege of choosing and we all have this privilege,” said Villagrán.

“Around the world, communities celebrate and honor the legacy of César Chávez and Dolores Huerta.

Except for one place. And that’s right here in their adopted hometown (Kern County),” said President Vernon B. Harper Jr. as he spoke at the first annual Chávez-Huerta Leadership Conference.

On Oct. 3 CSUB hosted the first, and what they hope to be annual César Chávez Leadership conference—a conference that was spearheaded by Dr. Mark Martinez, Claudia Catota, Dr. Ivy Cargile, Dr. James L. Rodriguez, Dr. Alicia Rodriquez, Dr. José Villagrán, Dr. David Barrera and Ludy Ortega Magana. This year’s conference theme was “Latinos in Politics: Our Vote, Our Voice, Our

Impact.”

This conference’s goal is to become the “premier social justice convening in the nation,” said Harper. This would not only study the works and leadership of César Chávez and Dolores Huerta but celebrate them as well.

This comes from the fact that most students at CSUB, and Kern County in general, don’t celebrate, understand or really comprehend the astonishing work that came from Chávez and Huerta—two civil rights activists and leaders who co-founded the United Farmworkers Movement that granted basic rights, protection and dignity to farmworkers in the Central Valley.

“So many of our youth are not familiar with who these people are, even though so many of our students come from families of farmworkers.

This conference is going to be an

entryway for our CSUB community on who these people are, what this movement is and was and what it can look like in the future. It’s time for our community to give Chávez and Huerta their flowers,” said Cargile in an article written by CSUB’s public information officer, Jennifer Self.

On day one of this conference many prominent figures showed up to share stories, encouragement and motivation to the Latino/Hispanic community at CSUB, especially to the youth. One being Linda Yvette Chávez, the author of the BIPOC comedy “Flamin’ Hot.” Chávez spoke about leadership and how she personally broke through barriers to get where she is today. Audience members were then able to ask her how they might get into play writing, leadership or advice on how to mentor students.

“I’m a play-writer and I write

plays... my goal was to have them put up on stage. Him inviting me [David A. Melendez, assistant professor of theater] to meet a screen writer whose work and writing you see on stage is like a way of telling me that I can one day be just like her,” said Maria Vega, a theater student at CSUB. Seeing representation on screen was personal to her as a student who doesn’t always feel seen. It made her believe in herself more.

Many other students felt the same as Vega, speaking about how the conference taught them that “Black and brown faces can be in high places.”

“We’re all Latinas [we wanted] to see people that look like us doing great things.”

“Education is power… this motivates us to continue to use our power,” said students Nina Acosta,

Haylee Hernandez, and Marviel Vasquez.

The second day of the conference consisted of a retreat to Keene, CA and the Chávez National Monument. Students, faculty, and staff were invited to a walking tour of the monument, a conference and panel sessions on various topics such as building political power and the need for social change.

For the first time ever CSUB launched a Chávez student leadership cohort for 10 students in a yearlong program designed to “empower and cultivate the next generation of student leaders.”

“Sí, se puede,” they chanted throughout the conference as they reflected on the power of the leaders that came before us, and the leaders that we are creating today.

El factor ‘X’: ¿Aceptando la diversidad o simplificando la identidad?

El termino Latinx busca ser más inclusivo de todas las identidades de genero dentro de la comunidad latinoamericana. Sin embargo, aunque este término resana con algunos, también genera resistencia en otros.

Cal State Bakersfield celebro recientemente el Mes de la Herencia Latinx, lo que plantea la pregunta: ¿quien realmente se identifica como Latinx? ¿Cómo se sienten estudiantes, facultad y empleados de CSUB con el término? El Veloz condujo una encuesta anónima para averiguar.

De las 110 respuestas, 72 se identificaban como Latino/a/x/e. Como un cuarto de ese número, 19 se identifican como Latinx y 18 dijeron que aveces se identificaban como Latinx.

Maria F. Rosas, una estudiante especializándose en Psicología dijo que cuando escucho por primera vez el termino Latinx, la molesto y aunque ya ha aceptado el termino, ella prefiere identificarse como Latina.

Otros creen que el termino Latinx se está imponiendo en comunidades Latinoaméricas y que no encaja con la estructura fonética del español, ya que es un idioma de género.

“No se siente correcto remplazar Latino/a con Latinx, ya que contradice toda la lengua española que depende de sustantivos masculinos y femeninos”, dijo un individuo anónimo que lleno la encuesta.

Este fue una opinión comun con otras personas que llenaron la encuesta. Las respuestan a menudo decian que, “El uso de la ‘x’ en la palabra, no es natural a la lengua” y que “¿Cómo apoya al marginalizado confundirlos?”

La opinión más compartida fue que las personas no tenian problemas

con aquellos que se identifican con el termino Latinx; sin embargo, no quieren que se vuelva el termino estándar.

“No me importa como elijan llamarse, pero no me gustaría que ese fuera el término estándar utilizado para mí y para mi cultura”, dijo otro individuo anónimo que lleno la encuesta.

A pesar de las controversias, hay quienes están en favor del términos inclusivos de género en español.

El Dr. José Villagrán, proesor asistente de estudios etnicos dijo que aunque entiende que el termino puede ser difícil de pronunciar para algunos, eso no deberia ser una excusa. “¿Cómo se llama la compañía nacional petrolera de México?...Pemex.

Dijo que tal vez sea por la relación de México con Estados Unidos, pero la ‘x’ ya es parte de la cultura y que siempre defenderá el concepto del término y a las minorías al que representa, en este caso a los individuos no binarios y las mujeres.

El termino Latino es considerad el termino neutral pero deja a las mujeres en las sombras. Todos los términos neutrales en español todavía son masculinos. Se supone que el término Latinx es inclusivo hacia las mujeres también, pero algunas no se sienten así.

“Me hizo pensar qué para tener la ‘x’, todos somos iguales y yo no me siento igual, porque soy mujer,” dijo Rosas.

Otro problema que las personastienen con este término es que parece agrupara a millones de personas en una sola categoría. Sin embargo, este no es el único termino que hace esto — Latino, Latina, Hispano, Hispana, todos estos son términos comunes que buscan categorizar múltiples comunidades a una sola categoría.

Villagrán explico que mientras estos términos pueden ser útiles, especialmente con objetivos políticos, también es increíblemente complicado categorizar a millones de personas mundialmente.

Es importante destacar que los términos ‘hispano/a’ no pueden ser usados intercambiablemente con los términos ‘latino/a/x/e’, ya que no tienen el mismo significado.

La encuesta por El Veloz muestro

que, de los 110 individuos que llenaron la encuesta, solo 55 personas reportaron entender la diferencia entre los términos Hispano/a y Latino/a/x/e.

Todo esto complicado por el hecho que Latino, Hispano y terminos relacionados son comunmente confundidos.

La principal diferencia entre estas categorías es que los hispanos son de países hispanohablantes pero excluye a las poblaciones indígenas y a los brasileños. Por otro lado, los latinos son de países de Latino América.

Por ejemplo, Españoles son considerados Hispanos y no Latinos, mientras brasileños son Latinos pero no Hispanos.

Villagrán explica que a veces le preocupa que estos términos esten borrando identidades que tal vez no sean tan grandes.

“Muchas veces, cuando gente dice Latino, pienso que se están refiriendo al mexicano y no a puertorriqueño o dominicanos”, dijo Villagrán.

“Quizás el lunes me identifico como Chicano, quizás martes me identifico como latino, o miércoles Latinx; simplemente porque yo tengo el privilegio de escoger eso y todos tenemos ese privilegio”, dijo Villagrán.

Castillo is an alumnus of CSUB and graduated in Fall 2023. During his time at CSUB, Castillo was the vice president of ASI legislative affairs and was committed to having the PRIDE flag raised during the month of October. Despite the supreme court ruling on public flag displays, with the help of the president’s cabinet, he led a policy to have the Pride flag flown in October as well as the military flags flown during the month of May. “For me, it heals my inner child too because I never had the resources to seek coming out. For me to see this event provide visibility…warms my heart and it makes me happy that the campus continues this tradition and really my legacy as well,” said Castillo.

Castillo felt like he “had a whole kaleidoscope of memories…” explaining how four years ago the idea of the Pride Flag raising ceremony was just a dream. Castillo seeing the tradition on campus warms his heart and shows the continuation of this tradition and his legacy.

Garrison is a doctoral student at CSUB, currently focusing on research regarding LGBTQ+ educators in California and is a history teacher at the Kern High School District. They have been an LGBTQ+ club advisor since 2017, as well as co-organized Oleander Pride, a Pride parade near downtown Bakersfield.

“I grew up in Bakersfield. For a lot of people in Bakersfield being LGBTQ is something that can be a challenge in their life because of acceptance. It meant a lot to have the university, and the town, that I’m from and taught in acknowledge the work that I have done in this community, to help students feel safer on their campuses,” they said.

Acosta helped with the development of BC’s first safe space trainings and even before it was required, she worked with BC Student Life to help students change their names on school issued ID’s. She was also one of the first faculty members to have their picture and name displayed on the Out@ BC webpage.

“For so long our community was invisible… to have CSUB recognize people in our community is kind of a big deal…I have been an activist since the 1990’s…but I never felt part as one of the leaders in the community… It was surprising, but really gratifying,” said Acosta.

Friends who write together, stay together Jocelynn Landon, Editor-in-Chief of The Runner

Junior year was the start of it all.

As two people met for the first time their junior year, they would have never thought that a newsroom was where a lifelong friendship would begin. From featuring all that was happening at Cal State Bakersfield, to fast deadlines and creative headlines, blossomed a friendship dating back to 2013.

Shelby Parker, marketing and

communications specialist at CSUB for university advancement, had just transferred from Taft College and was studying communications with an emphasis in journalism. When she arrived in the newsroom on the first day of class, she spoke with the then current advisor Jennifer Burger, college network journalism editor for Cal Matters, about how she could get into feature writing.

Burger introduced Parker to The Runner’s features editor at the time, Athena Skapinakis, senior alumni engagement specialist for university advancement at CSUB. Both Skapinakis and Parker were a bit awkward in the early stages of their friendship. They had different social lives and circles that they were involved with outside of class.

When they first met, Parker wrote

that Skapinakis was very good at making people in The Runner feel included. Skapinakis would often chat in the Facebook group, over text, and make plans for staff members to hang out beyond the newsroom.

“We didn’t realize how much we had in common until much later.

Once we reconnected, we discovered so many commonalities between us, and our friendship naturally evolved and grew quite quickly from there,” wrote Skapinakis.

Skapinakis said that they have conversations all the time ranging from pop culture tea to things that are going on at work. They are so close that Parker was even a bridesmaid in Skapinakis’ wedding.

Their friendship may not have evolved until after they graduated; however, Parker said that The Runner was a big foundation of it.

They are now each other’s biggest supporters and encouragers, and ten years later they are living out every best friends dream of being able to work alongside each other.

“I don’t remember a time when she didn’t play such an important role in my life. Being coworkers, literally working back-to-back... collaborating, bouncing ideas off one another. There’s a high level of trust with each other now,” wrote Parker.

Skapinakis often finds notes of encouragement on her desk from Parker, and they balance the laughter, collaboration, tears, and smiles with

their day-to-day workload.

“Having The Runner as a foundation is what made it possible for us to reconnect and become the dynamic duo we are now,” said Skapinakis. “I think Shelby and I went through some massive growing pains during our undergrad years in college, and it took gaining perspective and maturing to really appreciate one another.”

The Runner was everything for Parker and Skapinakis as it led them into their current field of communications. Beyond the newsroom, because of the mentorship they received from Burger and the tools she gave them, the opportunities they have now wouldn’t have been possible without The Runner.

For Parker and Skapinakis, The Runner might have started as just a paper, a class, a graduation requirement, but it turned into something that they never would have guessed—a lifelong friendship and skills they use every day to succeed in their current lives, once again sitting side by side.

“It’s funny to look back and laugh at our original awkwardness when we met and how we should have hit it off long ago...I consider Shelby to be one of my closest friends and confidants...

I’m so grateful to have her in my life,” said Skapinakis.

Cal State Bakersfield’s political climate, what matters to the campus Jocelynn Landon, Editor-in-Chief This year’s presidential election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump has created numerous conversations around the candidates beliefs and political implementations. The Runner conducted a “CSUB political climate survey” over the last three weeks to find out what are the issues that matter to the campus population. While the survey only got data from 38 students, The Runner wants to bring awareness to

the issues and thoughts towards this year’s presidential race.

With one focus of voters being Gen Z, who make up about 41 million of the votes for the 2024 election according to Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement. For The Runners Survey 78.3% of the participants were among Gen Z, and 41.4% overall are first time voters who plan to vote in this upcoming election.

Now prompts the question–What are the main issues that the campus seems to care about? The data showed that immigration, inflation, racial justice, reproductive rights and housing were the top five issues of concern.

With conversations around misinformation and Gen Z mainly get news from social media sites such as TikTok or Instagram, 76.3% of the people in the survey said that they feel like they are informed about the

candidates running.

The survey also showed that 84.2% of the respondents believed that presidential debates make a difference. This election season between presidential candidates had only one debate on Sept. 10.

Trump says “it’s just too late” and claims Harris is “losing badly.”

Harris has a slight lead in most polls, within the margin of error, and has accepted CNN’s offer to debate Trump. He has declined.

Overall 68.4% say that they are voting for Harris Waltz, whereas 23.7% are voting for Trump Vance– of that, 21% say they distrust both candidates, but will vote anyway.

Immigration / Inmigración Vice President Harris has spoken up that the immigration system is broken and needs repair. Harris wants to restore the failed bipartisian boarder deal as she belives that it would increase funding for agents, detention facilities as well as increase funding for fentanyl detection technology.

Voting in the Age of Apathy: While Your Vote Still Matters

As the 60th presidential election of the Untied Sates approaches, asking friends or family how they feel about it might get you a shrug or an eye roll; who could blame them? From the last-minute ticket toss-up to multiple assassination attempts, California State University voters are exhausted if not yet wholly apathetic. Yet, fall cools the Central Valley, so does the cool breeze of optimism.

According to CIRCLE, the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, nearly “41 million Gen Z will be eligable to vote” this upcoming election. Yet, many report feeling disillusioned, and veteran voters share that sentiment. The big question many voters are burdened wiith wondering nowadays is, “Does my vote still count?”

Newly eligible and seasoned vot-

ers are swept up in the national discourse surrounding intense political rhetoric that bombards us 24/7. In the society we live in now with politics on all our media it becomes very difficult to get our facts and opinions straight.

Political fatigue is alive and well, amplified by the 24-hour news cycle that we see on our screens.

Isabella Torres, Business Administration major, admits to an overwhelming mix -José Villagrán of political rhetoric and social media noise that keeps her away from politics for the most part.

She often finds it all “too much to understand.”

Having on-demand news and information ready at our fingertips is a blessing and a curse for many Gen Z voters, especially when we are less an a month away from Election Day. Despite the chaos, Isabella advises us to “remember the power we have”

ple running at your local level are acessible people... that you can reach out to within your community,”

in our right to vote and to “do our research” when navigating through the current political climate.

When examining the root causes of political fatigue, Dr. José Villagrán, assistant professor of ethnic studies at CSUB, understands the exhaustive nature of politics and how the lack of stems from political dread. He understands that elections are more than just about the next president in the Oval Office.

A candidate that… can to the everyday experiences people are struggling with but actually offer tangible solutions,” said Villagrán.

Since casting his first ballot in 2004, Villagrán has since learned how to combat politically induced dread. He encourages both new and unsure voters to, “be comprehensive in your view about politics…this is so much deeper than the presidential candidate.” When asked for his opinion on his ideal outcome in the election he said, “If we can have an election outcome where we can start to actually talk about our Latin American neighbors and friends as human beings again, as people worthy of love and respect and dignity, to me that’s the ideal outcome.”

parties with friends to become more politically active and informed about different ideas. Getting together in a comfortable space can make the political process less about the news and doom scrolling and more about community involvement.

If you are still stuck in total political disengagement there is

sympathy, many voters would understand where you are coming from.

Proposition 4 seeks to borrow $10 billion from bonds to go towards projects that will improve infrastructure for the changing climate.

YES: Will borrow $10 billion for climate and environment projects.

NO: Will stop California from taking on $10 billion of more debt.

PROP #5 Voting threshold

Context: Currently, whenever a local city government wants to pass laws that deal with affordable housing and infrastructure bonds, they need a majority vote from their citizens. This leads to cases where even though a majority of the citizens vote in favor, the law still does not pass as a high majority is needed. Proposition 5 would change the majority vote needed for such laws from to a 55% vote.

YES: Will lower the electoral voting threshold of local affordable housing and infrastructure bonds to 55%.

NO: Will keep the required voting threshold of a majority needed to pass local affordable housing and infrastructure bonds.

PROP #6 Involuntary servitude

Context: While slavery is illegal in the state of California, the state often forces prisoners to partake in manual labor. Proposition 6 would stop prisons from forcing its prisoners to do labor based servitude.

YES: Will prohibit involuntary servitude as a punishment for crime, thus prisoners won’t be forced to work.

NO: Will continue to allow prisons to force prisoners into positions of labor.

PROP #32 Minimum wage

Context: The current state minimum wage is set at $16 per hour for most workplaces. Proposition 32 would increase the minimum wage by $1.

YES: Will higher the statewide minimum wage to $17 immediately and to $18 in January 2025.

NO: Will leave the statewide $16 an hour minimum wage.

PROP #33 Local rent control

Context: There are many restrictions in place that prohibit the raising of rent through regulations; however, if proposition 33 were to pass, cities would have more freedom over rent prices.

YES: Will allow cities to expand and determine rent prices.

NO: Will keep the way rent is currently regulated.

PROP #34 Patient spending

Context: Proposition 34 is calling for California providers who receive a federal discount on pharmaceuticals to spend at least 98% of their net drug sale revenue on “direct patient care.”

This proposition, however, only affects health care providers who spend at least $100 million on expenses other than direct care, who also own and operate apartment buildings, and who have racked up at least 500 severe health and safety violations in the last decade. Michael Weinstein, who is the longtime president of the Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation, is the only target of this highly specific proposition. Weinstein has used his position to affect state and local housing politics rather than being focused on patient care, which has made him many political enemies and the target of this proposition.

YES: Will make the AIDS healthcare foundation spend 98% of their net revenue on direct patient care.

NO: Will allow the AIDS healthcare foundation and similar providers to continue avoiding regulation.

PROP #35 Health care tax

CSUB has kept the tradition of OUTober by kicking off the month with a pride flag raising ceremony hosted in the Admin Quad—a tradition that has been at CSUB for the last three years.

This event was planned by the LGBTQ+ affinity group and has been supported from various organizations such as the LGBTQ+ Pride Network student organization, Student Health Services and Associated Students Incorporated.

This event is special and important for so many people in the LGBTQ+ community as it not only offers resources for LGBTQ+ individuals but it also creates a sense of community.

This years pride flag rising ceremony featured “Mariachi Arcoiris” the worlds first ever LGBTQ+ mariachi band, play to open the event. The crowd was in awe by the sparkling clothes they wore and the music they were hearing.

At the pride flag ceremony, three individuals were honored for the work that they do for the LGBTQ+ community, from spreading awareness, fostering

change and supporting the community in different ways.

The Roadrunner’s Kern County Rainbow Community Award was given to Helen Acosta, Dr. Christine Boonz-Cruz accepted the award on her behalf as Acosta was teaching a class. The Roadrunner's CSUB Rainbow Campus Champion Award was awarded to Olive Garrison. Lastly, The Roadrunner’s Distinguished Rainbow Alumni Award was given to Ignasio Castillo.

Upcoming events for OUTober are: Oct. 24: Expression Nights at 7:00 p.m. at the Stockdale courtroom.

Oct. 29: OUTober speaker series at 6:00 p.m. hosted

Ferrari’s recent transfer to CSUB comes at a crucial time for the wrestling program, which is eager to bounce back after a disappointing season (0-12). Last year, CSUB missed out on a NCAA Championship appearance for the first time in 50 years, a significant setback for a program known for its storied history and competitive spirit.

“As a NCAA Division I National Champion, AJ has already proven he has the talent, dedication, and commitment to win at the highest level. Our wrestling program prides itself on having what we call ‘Bakersfield Grit,’ and that is a quality all our wrestlers we recruit embody,” wrote Tuohy.

Ferrari’s addition is seen as a potential game-changer, as the NCAA champion aims to help restore the team’s legacy and guide them back to national prominence.

With high hopes riding on his back, the Roadrunners are determined to reclaim their place among the elite in collegiate wrestling.

Soccer: Runners cruise past Sac State in Big West opener Steven Kertis, Freelance Sports Writer Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners men’s soccer team defeated the Sacramento State Hornets 3-0 in the Big West Conference Opener on Oct. 2.

CSUB is coming off of a big win over the Pacific Tigers and entered this game 3-2-2 for the season.

In the first 12 minutes of the game, CSUB was playing their style of game by taking advantage of the wide areas and leading to significant scoring chances early.

In the 13th minute, forward, Connor Mautino, scored the first goal after a rebound that went right to him.

“They gave us the wide areas and we were able to take advantage of

those areas,” said Captain Bryson Hankins The Roadrunners dominated the first half with a total of nine shots, but could not score, only leading 1-0 at halftime.

The momentum kept rolling for the Roadrunners in the second half and it didn’t take long as Mautino scored his second goal for the Roadrunners to take a 2-0 commanding lead.

“Connor was scoring those goals at the right moments as he was able to get in those positions,” said Head Coach Adam Grant.

The final blow of the game was in the 78th minute as Mautino scored his third goal of the game, which

was a hat trick. This was assisted by Shammai Camara with his second assist of the game.

The Roadrunners would cruise to a 3-0 victory over Sacramento State in the Big West Opener.

“Every game in the Big West is tough. This was a good Sacramento State team that we played today,” said Grant.

CSUB improved to 4-2-2 for the season and now 1-0 in the Big West Conference.

“I felt confident out there today.

As a team we continue to grow confidence from game to game,” said Mautino.
