Reach Customers Where They Are— On Their Phones
Americans check their cellphones 144 times a day, once every 10 minutes. In contrast, people may only check their email a few times a day, so messages pile up and often get overlooked. Because people tend to view and react to text messages right away, short message service (SMS) is an ideal channel for connecting with customers. When customers need to take immediate action, such as responding to a fraud alert, you must contact them where you know they will quickly see and act on the message.
Why SMS? SMS is a powerful communication tool because it’s direct, personal and effective. Many people prefer text messages over emails or phone calls. Compared to email, SMS boasts: Higher response rates. Although the 98% open rate often attributed to SMS (based on 2010 data) is no longer true, SMS open rates are still higher than email. According to more recent surveys, the open rate for commercial/ promotional SMS messages ranges from 42% to 55%, versus 32% for emails. And virtually all text messages are seen, if not read. The most common click through rate is 20–35% for SMS, versus 1–10% for email.

Lower spam rates. One survey found that 35% of consumers reported that at least 50% of their daily email is spam. In contrast, only 25% of consumers receive spam texts every day. Strong ROI. An Association of National Advertisers survey found that the ROI for an SMS advertising campaign is 102%, compared to email (93%) and social media (81%).
