Firefighters Honored JONESVILLE – On Sunday morning, August 28, 2011, Hurricane Irene passed through Saratoga County and the Jonesville Fire Department responded to an alarm for a structure fire at 2 Tipperary Way. This alarm would be the sixth of 42 alarms the department would respond to that day. Recently, four firefighters were honored at the Jonesville Fire Department Installation Banquet for their heroic actions that day in rescuing a fellow firefighter. Lieutenant Anthony Simmons and Firefighter Donald Horan were presented with a medal of merit for their exceptional performance in assisting in the rescue of a fellow firefighter. The Jonesville Fire District presented the Medal of Valor to Captain Kyle Wheeler and Engineer Craig Lewis for their heroic efforts in the rescue of a fellow firefighter. US Congressman Chris Gibson was in attendance at the banquet and he presented all four firefighters with a Congressional Letter of Recognition for their actions at the fire.

SARATOGA COUNTY – The Saratoga County Fair has announced that up to ten $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to current New York State high school seniors and also students enrolled in college. The New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs and the New York State Showpeople’s Association sponsor the scholarships. The qualifying students must be active at the Saratoga County Fair. All applicants from Saratoga County must submit their applications through the Saratoga County Fair no later than Friday, April 13, 2012. Information is available at the Saratoga County Fair office, 162 Prospect Street, Ballston Spa, NY 12020; through Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County and from local high school offices. Applications must be printed and completed from the web at www.nyfairs.org.
