Belmont Stakes galloping to Spa?

Saratoga Springs “preferred” site as 2025 Triple Crown race seeks temporary home

The home of the third and final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown is finally getting a major makeover. But the timeline could have the 2025 Belmont Stakes looking for a temporary home, and the New York Racing Association would like it to be at Saratoga Race Course.

“Should the construction at Belmont Park require the Belmont Stakes be run at a different venue, then NYRA’s preference would absolutely be to hold the event at historic Saratoga Race Course,” NYRA Vice President of Communications Pat McKenna said in a phone interview Monday afternoon.

Shortly after it hosts the Belmont Stakes in

2024, Belmont Park is set to undergo a $455 million renovation of everything from the track surfaces to a new, smaller grandstand, a better fit for the sport in the modern era.

The renovation involves knocking down the massive, 1.25-million-square-foot grandstand that has been in place since 1968 and replacing it with one that’s roughly 275,000 square feet.

The 1½-mile race known as “the test of the champion” was run at Aqueduct in Queens from 1963-67 when Belmont Park was last being renovated. It has never been run at Saratoga Race Course, and that is an intriguing possibility for New York Racing Association officials.

While stressing there was “no concrete timeline” for when construction at Belmont would begin, McKenna said a clearer picture would emerge in the next “two to three months.” “There will likely be a Belmont Stakes held away from Belmont Park,” while the track is renovated, he said.

Only Aqueduct and Saratoga are being considered as alternate venues for the 2025 race, McKenna said.

“Saratoga would be an interesting one for, like, a festival for a few days,” NYRA president and CEO Dave O’Rourke told The Associated Press last week. “It might set some (attendance) benchmarks that may be tough to beat. But I think it would be incredible from a fan perspective. A lot of it’s logistics.”

“A Belmont Stakes at Saratoga is an event that would capture the attention of the entire sports world while driving tourism and

economic impact for upstate New York,” McKenna said.

Local business owners already were considering the financial impact of a Triple Crown race in Saratoga Springs.

“Our local hospitality leaders are over-themoon excited to host the Belmont Stakes here in Saratoga whenever that may be,” said Todd Shimkus, president of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. “Hotels and hospitality have already factored this in for 2025.” Shimkus said staffing levels would not be a concern a month before the Saratoga summer meet normally begins. “Staffing is an issue overall but businesses here have figured out how to adapt,” he said.

“If a Triple Crown victory was on the line in 2025, no doubt that would be big or bigger than anything we might imagine. The novelty and history of the whole event is likely to create quite a buzz with hopefully record crowds here and on television,” Shimkus said. “You could tell us tomorrow and we’d be ready.”

Schumer heralds two new tech deals

GlobalFoundries to make chips for Lockheed Martin; Nanotech gets aid

ALBANY — U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer traveled to Saratoga County on Monday afternoon to help announce a “landmark” deal in which GlobalFoundries will make computer chips for Lockheed Martin, the $66 billion defense contractor that makes helicopters, fighter jets and other weapons and equipment for the U.S. military.

Schumer’s visit to GlobalFoundries’ Fab 8 headquarters and manufacturing campus in Malta came about an hour

after he visited the Albany Nanotech Complex to announce a new federally funded workforce training program that will benefit tech companies across the state.

Both announcements are likely to help Albany Nano-Tech and GlobalFoundries win billions of dollars in federal aid through the federal CHIPS and Science Act, a $52 billion program Schumer authored and pushed through Congress last year. It’s designed to re-establish the domestic chip industry and its supply chain after decades of migration to Asia and China, which has become America’s largest geopolitical and economic foe.

The biggest announcement was made at GlobalFoundries, which said it has entered into a “strategic collaboration” to make chips for Lockheed Martin, the maker of helicopters and fighter jets for the U.S. military.

“This is great news,” Schumer said, standing on a stage outside Fab 8 with Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet and GlobalFoundries CEO Thomas Caufield. “We can’t rely on supply chains that are

overseas.”

Taiclet, who said Lockheed already has “dozens” of chip suppliers currently that are based in the U.S. to conform with Department of Defense regulations, wouldn’t say how many chips it has agreed to buy from GlobalFoundries or if the two companies have signed a contract.

But the scope of the deal appears to be substantial in terms of cooperation.

Taiclet and Caulfield said the two companies would work on developing chips that can be made faster and cheaper than Lockheed Martin’s current chip supply chain can accomplish — as well as chips that can withstand higher temperatures using gallium nitride as the substrate instead of traditional silicon. The two firms will also work on new types of chip “packaging” that improves chip performance and photonics-based chips that run on light instead of electrons.

“This is going to make (our supply chain) stronger,” Taiclet said. The deal with Lockheed Martin also improves GlobalFoundries’ chances

of being awarded up to $2 billion through the CHIPS and Science Act for a second factory it wants to build at Fab 8.

Not only would additional orders from Lockkheed Martin help justify the need for a second factory, or fab, but it would increase its chances of winning a CHIPS and Science Act grant, which favors projects that have national security implications. GlobalFoundries employs 3,000 people at the current Fab 8 chip factory, and a second fab would employ another 1,000 workers.

“It makes it far more

likely that GlobalFoundries will grow here in the Capital Region,” Schumer added.

But nearly as important was an announcement Schumer attended at Albany Nanotech about an hour before his visit to Fab 8.

At that event, Schumer, along with officials from the U.S. Department of Labor and the non-profit National Institute for Innovation and Technology, announced that New York will host a Career Opportunity Hub, a federally funded workforce training program that will prepare

Book Signing with Billy Cole at Impressions of Saratoga

SARATOGA - Stop by and meet Billy Cole and his book “With the Band, Memoirs of a Music Shop Owner”. Billy is the owner of Cole’s Woodwind Shop at 47 Phila Street in downtown Saratoga Springs. Billy is a legend in the music world for his mad instrument repair skills.

When: Friday, June 23, 2023 6pm-8pm

Where: Impressions of Saratoga, 368 Broadway Saratoga Springs NY, 12866From his book;

“Two days are never the same in the life of Billy Cole, a music instrument repairman. Plans of scheduled clarinet overhaul are quickly shuffled aside as a renowned artist walks through the door for an adjustment, a chat and tickets to that night’s concert.

Over the course of nearly 50 years in the music business, Billy has become a personal friend and respected repairman to some of the top musicians in the industry. Through his fine craftsmanship and attention to detail, his small music shop is a welcoming haven for musicians to stop by, to gather and be amongst others that share a common interest in music. He has become a friendly face for a musician on the road, year after year.

From Woodstock, New York City and beyond, come with the band, as you’re transported to sound stages, studios and shows that tell the story of just another day with the music technician. Musical emergencies come in the form of a young student anticipating the repair of their trumpet before their school concert to a backstage repair with

thousands of fans waiting. Each one has a story and is told through the eyes of Billy with the band as you are taken on a musical adventure transcending age and background.

Throughout the serendipitous twists and turns of life, Billy navigates it the best way he knows how, with faith and with his wife, his partner, his best friend. Together, they share the journey, forging an unconventional, yet traditional family lifestyle. With The Band not only tells the story of a music man, it also chronicles the balancing act that comes with being a business owner, father and husband, and how to appreciate the extraordinary in an ordinary day.

Follow your dreams with passion. Turn your worry into undoubting enthusiasm. Take advantage of every opportunity with lightning speed, learn from your mistakes and celebrate your victories.”

The Story Behind William J. Burke & Sons

Funeral Home

Part of Saratoga Springs History Museum’s Program Series

SARATOGA – The Saratoga Springs History Museum is pleased to host a discussion on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at 7 p.m. of the rich history of the oldest continuously running funeral home in Saratoga Springs, which opened in 1893 as William J. Burke and Sons, Undertaker and Embalmer. The panel of speakers are writer/historian Carol Stone Godette, Burke & Bussing’s Mark Phillips, and Jacqueline Bunge, the History Museum’s Education Director.

The three will discuss Victorian-era mourning and funeral customs; how William Burke’s involvement in the embalming of President Ulysses S Grant led him to open his own funeral home; and the rich history of Burke’s role as one of four operating funeral homes in Saratoga Springs (including Simone’s Funeral Home, Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, and Kark & Tunison Funeral Home). Many historic and personal images from the speakers’ private collections as well as a special display of artifacts will illustrate the talk.

“My father, Richard Stone, was fortunate to become the sole employee of William and James Burke in 1947,” says speaker Carol Godette, a lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs. “The Burkes were highly respected community members who instilled their core values of respect, dignity and compassion in my father and all subsequent employees of the firm that bore their name. I am excited to share some of the rich history of Burke’s 130 years of operation in our community.”

Please join us for this live program in the beautiful parlor of the historic Canfield Casino. Admission is free for History Museum Members, and $10 for non-Members. Tickets and more details at www.saratogahistory. org/events.

Grill Safely This Summer

Plenty of people can be found working their grilling magic year-round. But the vast majority of people do the bulk of their grilling over the summer, when warm temperatures contribute to a relaxed atmosphere that makes outdoor cooking and dining that much more appealing. The relaxing nature of summer can make it easy to overlook safety, particularly when grilling. However, the right safety measures when cooking over an open

flame can prevent home fires and other accidents that can cause injury and even death. In recognition of the many things that can go wrong when grilling, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Fire Administration offer these simple fire safety tips that every grillmaster can keep in mind as summer grilling season hits full swing.

• Only use a grill outside. Grills should never be used indoors, and that includes in garages with the doors open. Before lighting a flame, make sure the grill is at

least three feet from siding, deck rails and eaves.

• Establish a safe zone around the grill. A three-foot safe zone around the grill can decrease the likelihood that pets will run into and potentially tip over the grill. Kids can be taught to respect this zone as well so they avoid being burned.

• Open a gas grill before lighting it. Charcoal grills, hybrid grills and smokers cannot be lit unless the lid is lifted. That isn’t the case with gas grills, but gas grills should never be lit with the lid closed. If a gas grill is lit with its lid closed, gas can build up inside and that could cause an explosion. Even if there’s some summer rain falling, open the lid on a gas grill before turning the ignition switch.

• Keep an eye on the grill at all times. It’s tempting to walk away from a grill while food is cooking, but someone should always be tasked with staying close to the grill. If cooks must walk away, ask another adult to stay close to the grill until you return. All it takes is a few seconds for a fire to start.

• Clean the grill regularly. Regular cleaning of the grill is both healthy and safe. Cleaning helps to ensure the cooking surface is clean and unlikely to cause food poisoning. But a grease-free grill also poses less of a fire hazard than one that hasn’t been cleaned.

• Let coals cool before discarding them. Coals from the grill should be given ample time to cool before they’re removed from the grill and discarded.

• Remember to turn the gas valve to the off position after cooking. When cooking with gas grills, cooks must remember to turn the valve to the off position once all the food has been cooked.

Simple safety measures can ensure summer grilling season goes off without a hitch.

“It’s not a coincidence that this will happen in New York,” Russo said.

Schumer said Monday that the new Career Opportunity Hub will help companies like Micron, Wolfspeed and GlobalFoundries to fill jobs at new chip factories being built, or recently built, across upstate. The program would also train future workers for companies like Plug Power, which makes hydrogen-powered fuel cells used in industrial vehicles.

Micron is planning a $100 billion chip manufacturing campus outside of Syracuse. Wolfspeed has built a $1 billion chip factory just outside Utica, and GlobalFoundries has Fab 8 with Fab 8.2 being considered. The CHIPS and Science Act will help fund those projects, which will need thousands of new, qualified semiconductor workers. The new Career Opportunity Hub will train those workers at Albany Nanotech and sites across the state.

“It is one of the key ways we can ensure those jobs are being filled by upstate New Yorkers,” Schumer said at the Albany Nanotech event.

The new workforce training hub will also help Albany Nanotech’s quest to be designated as the headquarters of the National Semiconductor Training Center that is also going to be funded by the CHIPS and Science Act, Schumer added.

“There’s no better place in the country to supercharge upstate New York than here,” Schumer said.

Thank You to our Mysterious Benefactor from The Home Made Theater

SARATOGA - What else can I say, other than a very heartfelt thank you.

Can you imagine our shock and awe to open our PO Box and discover an anonymous gift of $10,000 made through Schwab Charitable! Furthermore, made (according to the postmark) on the second day of our current campaign. We really have no idea who you are, but we are so grateful for your generosity.

I hope, kind benefactor, that you will allow me to take this opportunity to also thank all those that have contributed thus far. The response to our plea has been humbling. We still have a ways to go to meet our $10,000 match from Stewarts/The Dake Family Foundation and our final goal, but it gets closer each day.

I’m sure that you are aware that the funds we are currently raising make up only about 14% of our annual budget. We will still need to rely on the generosity of individual donors like yourself to in order to continue producing the high quality theater all of you have come to expect from Home Made Theater. Your amazing gift gets us one step closer.

Once again, on behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire Home Made Theater family, thank you for fostering our mission to create theater for the community, by the community and for believing that there is nothing better than Home Made.

Sincerely,

Home Made Theater
