HiallinincredibleCroydon,
Whatagreattimeoftheyeartobelivinginthe Gulf country with the perfect weather and plenty to do and see, like rodeos and camp drafts all through the Gulf and here, in our own piece of paradise, there is lots going on, for instancewehavejustwrappedupourheritage week ending in our own rodeo and camp draft with great food and entertainment all week so congratulations to all who made it a great success.
You probably all know we didn’t win the Top Tiny Town award but we certainly gave those bigger towns a scare, we’ll have another go next year, but we all know we have the best townanyway.
So on to the business of Council starting with the FNQROC meeting in Mission Beach where theCEO,DeputyMayorandmyselfattended on the 5th June. At this meeting most of the time was taken up by the lack of Government support for housing and aging infrastructure and how North Queensland was absolutely smashed by the big wet that we weren’t supposed get with some places only officially opening up now, I told the meeting that TMR has been asleep at the wheel for decades and the time has come for real money to be spent inourregion.
TrevorPickering
I went on to say that they can keep their shiny thingsandtrinketsweneedbillionsofdollarsto renew their infrastructure like the four major bridges on our National Highway One, and countless floodways that need lifting, so communities aren’t isolated for five months of the year and in some cases six months. We then had a long discussion about the housing crisis and tried bouncing a few ideas off one another but it all comes back to the responsibility to build social housing sits squarely with Governments both State and Federal. We have launched our housing strategy with both the NWQROC and the FNQROC so we will see if Governments will take noticeofourlargeregionalapproach.
AlsoatthismeetingIletthemknowthatIintend to take a motion to the LGAQ annual conference in Brisbane wanting the State Government to write it into law that each Local Government area has the right to place total fire bans in its Shire whenever local knowledge determines that, along with extreme weather like heat and wind and fuel loads and every property especially National Parks must obey this law or suffer the same consequences as everyoneelse.
At the last Council meeting we finalised our budget for the next financial year and I believe it’sthebiggestbudgetinCroydon’shistorywith money for upgrades and new water infrastructure, town beautification and employeehousingamongotherthings, wealso have put money aside to make the recent men’smentalhealthtriptoKarumbaanannual thing but dates and times will be sorted out later.
Croydon Shire played host to the leader of the Katter Australia Party Queensland last week with Robbie having a half day meeting with Councilandstayingovernighttalkingtopeople at the pub and the next morning with a few businessleadersaroundtown.Ialsotookhimto the childcare centre where he met a couple of thestaffthere.
He also took this time to meet with Makala Harries who is Croydon’s participant in the YMCAYouthParliament–greatworkMakala!
In the meeting Council had with Robbie we discussed a range of things local and regional includinghealth, housing, schoolandroads. We didbringittohisattentionthattheplayingfield was definitely not level when it came to grants as Croydon couldn’t possibly match ToowoombaandMildurainitscapacitytowrite grantssothereneedstobeafairerway.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes woke up and nudged his faithfulfriend.
"Watson, look up at the sky and tellmewhatyousee."
Watson replied, "I see millions andmillionsofstars."
"What does that tell you?" Holmesasked.
Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that therearemillionsofgalaxiesand potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Holmes?"
Holmes was silent for a moment, then spoke. "Watson, you idiot. Someonehasstolenourtent!

The old drovers were legends on the land, They were tough and wiry and wore a good suntan
They drove their bullocks everyday in the relentless sun, Before sunrise each day, until the day was done. They drove all over Queensland through the Territory and over the Kimberley and back.
Through the treacherous Canning, down the Copper and along the Birdsville track.
Thirty hard years in the saddle, that’s how good drovers are made, You won’t make it in a cosy office job, or working somewhere in the shade.
The station owner depends on his drover; he has to be capable and reliable man, He can’t afford to be a boozer or a loser, when he’s got one thousand bullocks in his hands
A good drover can tell if things are not going right, like if the bullocks are looking toey and might take fright, He would say “Men we must ride our best horses tonight, keep the singing up and have the fire burning bright”
The drivers that I mention here, I knew them all first hand, They all come from Croydon, up in the North of Queensland
There’s Dude, Old Mahoney, Looking Glass Joe, Smiler, Pan and Jacky; these are some of the best that I know.
But technology has put the droving industry to rest, It is certainly faster now, but is it really best. Most of the old time drovers could not drive a big smoky diesel truck, They delivered their bullocks cheaper, intact and on time, using their knowledge and a little bit of luck.
