HiallinincredibleCroydon,
Well, that perfect weather we all love is gone for another year, and as we head into the build-up, there are two main things we need to stay vigilant about: fire and water. Firstly, please be very cautious around fire, as it can quickly get out of control and cause significant damage at this time of year. Secondly, remember to stay hydrated. Working outside in the hot sun and wind can lead to dehydration within half an hour and heat stroke within an hour, with various health issues following soon after.
On to some recent Council events: on the 3rd, Deputy Mayor Evans and I travelled to Cairns for the FNQROC meeting, where we held our AGM and board meeting. During the AGM, I nominated Etheridge Shire Mayor Barry Hughes for the position of Deputy Chair, which he accepted and was elected unopposed. This should help keep some of the spotlight on our end of the ROC.
On the 19th, elected members and the CEO left Croydon and travelled to Brisbane for the annual conference held by the LGAQ (Local Government Association of Queensland).
Alongside the Deputy Mayor, myself, and a couple of hundred other delegates, we discussed and voted on some 110 motions that the LGAQ will present to the Queensland Parliament on behalf of the 77 shire councils in this great state. Croydon submitted one motion for debate: our fire ban motion, which would require national parks to consult with the council and our local disaster committee before lighting any fires or face the same consequences as the rest of us. This motion passed with 186 votes in favour and 14 against, marking a great win for common sense.
The state election was held last week, and we now have a new Premier and a fresh start with the LNP governing for the first time in a decade. Let’s hope they’re more willing to work with the bush than the last government.
That’s all from me this month, and I’ll see you in the next Tele.
Cheers,Trevor.

Nestled in the serene landscape of Croydon, Patricia Blanco is known far and wide for her love of animals great and small. Raised with equal parts tradition and rebellion, Patricia’s life has been anything but predictable.
Patricia’s story begins with a Spanish immigrant father who trekked to Mexico and fell for Maria, a Mexican beauty who wasn’t just a pretty face; she had a knack for tactical maneuvering too. When her husband’s visa expired, Maria wasn’t about to let a little thing like paperwork keep her family apart. With Patricia—then three years old —tucked (clandestinely) beneath her skirts, Maria made her way to Australia, where Luis had planted roots as a tobacco farmer in Dimbulah.
The family eventually settled in Mareeba when Patricia started school. As a bright, determined student, Patricia was well on her way to bigger things. After high school, Patricia set off to pursue a law degree. But in the grand tradition of many young love stories, she soon found herself swept off her feet and trading torts and contracts for nappies and playdates. Two kids, one marriage, and a wealth of life experience later, Pat found herself balancing her legal ambitions with a surprising new role at Mareeba Shire Council, where she fostered her love of plants—a precursor to her later passion for all creatures great and small.
Following a marital shake-up, Patricia returned to her parents’ house, children in tow, and took on a new position as Manager of the Mareeba RSL. But it was during this stint that she stumbled into a somewhat more... entrepreneurial pursuit.
Somewhere between slinging drinks and organising karaoke nights, Pat managed to stumble her way into an unusual side hustle— running a Mexican cartel. Sure, most people are networking on LinkedIn, but she found her <connections= in slightly more, let’s say, thrilling circles. That’s how she met Ozzie, who raided her illegal goods warehouse. As their eyes met across the handcuffs, sparks flew, and el resto es historia. Before long, Patricia was trading her <Cartel Queen= crown for something a little less criminal: the well-worn cap of wife and mother.
Together now for over 11 years, Patricia and Ozzie are the proud parents of twin six-year-old boys, Michael and Jason—dubbed <demon children=. The twins keep Patricia’s hands as full as her house, but she’s found ways to wrangle her downtime too. Creating artistic expressions through pottery, reading, or bickering with Ozzie (a marital sport), Patricia’s hands never seem idle.
As Croydon’s unofficial <animal whisperer=; Pat’s passion for creatures of all kinds, legally adopted or otherwise, makes her a true local legend. You’ll find her creating art, nurturing her plants, rescuing pets in need, and, of course, crafting tales as colourful as her life has been. Because when it comes to Patricia, there’s no such thing as a dull day.
Leonie Foley’s life story is one of spirit, adaptability, and adventure. Born in Cairns, Leonie’s early years were marked by constant movement as her father worked across Far North Queensland as a handyman, cane cutter, and jackaroo. From Cairns to Mossman, Gordonvale to Feluga, and eventually Calen.
Leonie’s schooling stretched across the region before her family settled on Esmeralda Station in Croydon Shire. It was here that she stepped into the rugged life of a jillaroo, taking on station duties, mustering, and even cooking for the crew.
Life on the land led Leonie to Mittagong Station, where she met and married her husband, John, before the couple moved to Tabletop Station. Leonie’s knack for versatility came in handy when she joined the local council, where she wore many hats—from helping restore heritage buildings to maintaining parks and gardens, and even operating the local telephone exchange. During these years, she and John welcomed two children: Megan, who now resides in Mount Isa with her own family, and John, who is raising his four children in Canada.
In 1990, Leonie relocated with her kids to Mareeba, becoming active in the school community and landing a role with Mareeba Shire Council. There, she met her husband, Tony, and soon the family was on the move again to Mt Garnett, where Leonie worked as a short-order cook at BP and transitioned to the mines, gaining valuable experience in stores management. Leonie and Tony’s family expanded with three boys— Zachary, Aiden, and Ethan—who have each

Imagine you’re at a remote roadhouse in the Outback and spot a free Wi-Fi network with the roadhouse's name. You connect to check weather conditions, but within minutes, a pop-up requests access to your contacts and photos. You decline, but then you receive a fake notification claiming your banking app needs an urgent update. You ignore it, but only after safely disconnecting from the Wi-Fi. This scenario highlights how cybercriminals target unsuspecting users on public Wi-Fi by imitating legitimate services

Our school holidays were full of action, and the children were occupied with excursions to the splash park, heritage buildings, ANZAC Park, and the Information Centre to explore the old vehicles, trains, tin shacks, gardens, and the old machinery.
At the Centre, we have been busy learning about the ocean—how we can take care of it and help keep it clean. The children developed the skills needed to care for and help clean up the ocean through group discussions and sorting activities.
The children have engaged in nature walks to collect natural materials and used these to create various crafts. Our greenhouse is doing well despite the warm weather. We have planted beans and tomatoes, which are thriving. The group takes pride in watering the plants with watering cans during water play, as part of our learning about recycling and reusing.
We are now focused on creative experiences to celebrate Halloween. The children have crafted spiders, bats, ghosts, and mummies to create a spooky environment within our Centre.
