TIMELESS TREASURES: JOURNEY WITH US THROUGH TIME!
Hi all in incredible Croydon,
Busy, busy is the only way to put it, the year is certainly not waiting for anyone. Three road crews are out busily repairing roads after the wet we weren’t going to get and Easter and AnzacDayhavebeenandgoneandJuneisfast approaching!Wherehastheyeargone.
In my opinion at this time of year, we have the bestweatheranywhereinthisgreatcountryof ours. The cold crisp mornings are refreshing followedbyperfectsunnydays, whywouldyou want to live anywhere else? And on that note, as you all probably know from the many Facebook posts, Incredible Croydon is a finalist in the Tourism Tiny Town awards. Great work byCEOJacquiandherteamforpromotingour great Shire and thanks to our neighbours Etheridge, Carpentaria & Burke Shires for getting on board with our promotion and providing giveaways for the Savannah Way tourist drive initiative. Our posts have been shared far and wide by our great community members and their friends so thankyou and, if community pride has anything to do with winning the award we certainly would have already won! Congratulations to the lucky winneroftheprizeLuellaCampfromBrisbane.
Still on the subject of our fabulous town you would have all noticed works happening around town with the construction of the splashpark, gymshedandChineseTemplesite entrance statement, stay tuned on Facebook formoreupdates.
Best Life Adventures and Resilient Q, an initiativeoftheQueenslandChiefEntrepreneur, willbevisitinginearlyJuneontheirNapeofthe Capemission. They’llbespendingafewdaysin Croydon both mountain bike riding and spending some time at our beautiful lake, before heading to Etheridge Shire. There are certainlyexcitingtimesaheadhereinCroydon.
Now onto other business, on 8 May Deputy Mayor Jono Evans, Jacqui and myself travelled to Cloncurry for NWQROC meeting. A number of plans were unveiled and discussed at this meeting for the area including NWQ Infrastructure Master Plan, NW Regional Resilience Strategy and the 2024 Inquiry into Local Government Sustainability, if anyone would like to review these documents they’re available on the NWQROC website http://www.nwqroc.com.au. We also held our Councilmeetingand2ndbudgetworkshopon
16 May, again great work by the team in proposing a balanced budget whilst still undertakingcapitalprojects.
InclosingIwouldliketoremindyouallthatthe roads are getting busy with the tourist season so be careful when traveling and of course make all visitors to incredible Croydon feel welcome and happy that they decided to visit usandhopetheytelltheirfriendsandreturn.
Cheers TrevorFrom Coal to Gold. Terry brings a wealth of experience and a zest for adventure to our community. With over 30 years in Central Queensland's coal mining industry, Terry's career began as a miner and later expanded to roles in both coal and environmental laboratories.
The last nine years of his mining career saw him transition into workplace health and safety, where he excelled in fostering a robust safety culture, making a significant impact on the industry'sstandards.
In2014,seekingachangeofpace,Terryventured into the hospitality and tourism sector by setting upasailingcharterbusinessatGreat KeppelIsland.Here,heoperatedsnorkelling andsailingtrips,withhisclaimtofame beingthehostforcontestantsof"Farmer WantsAWife"onaromanticsunset cruise.However,theallureofthesea wasn'tenoughtokeephimsatisfied.
His search for a new boat led him to fall in love with a vessel in Fiji. His plan to sail it back home was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leavinghimstrandedinFijiuntilChristmas2021— a serendipitous isolation in a beautiful location. He took on the role of Workplace Health and Safety Advisor (WHSA) for Great Keppel Island Hideaway, overseeing the resort and its ferry service. Despite the picturesque setting, Terry felt theneedforanewchallenge.

Now, Terry is a cherished member of our community, bringing his rich background and dedicationtoeverytaskheundertakes.
Outsideofwork,Terryenjoysplayingandlistening to music, and you'll often find him walking near the lake, getting his much-needed water fix. He also cherishes time spent chatting with his three growndaughters.Hisholidaysarenowdedicated to fixing up his recently purchased cottage in Cow Bay, preparing for whatever adventure lies ahead.
Terry Simons' journey from the coal mines of Central Queensland to the gold mines of our beloved Croydon, is a testament to his adaptabilityandpassionfornewexperiences. We arethrilledtohavehimaspartofourcommunity, contributinghisuniqueskillsandzestforlife.
Welcomeaboard,Terry!
Our reliable cleaner has faithfully served council for just shy of 18 years. Born and bred in Croydon Ronell started her life in the familyrun Croydon General Store. After finishing her junior schooling she headed off for the big smoke to St Patrick’s College in Townsville, a time she recalls with mixed feelings.
Once her schooling was completed Ronell returned to Croydon and worked both in the family store and then as a teacher aide before startingherownfamily,1boyand1girl.Whenher kids reached high school age and headed off to boarding school, Ronell had a major decision to make.Withbothherchildren dislikingboardingschoolthe familymadetheharddecision tomovetoMareebauntiltheir schoolingwascomplete. Once her children had grown, and flown the coop,RonellventuredtoCenturyMineswhereshe spent2yearsasapermanentnightshiftcleaner. However, missing her hometown she returned to Croydon and secured her cleaning job with Council, apositionshestillholdswithpride.
Now a proud grandma of 4 her son, now living in Brisbane with his 2 and her daughter residing in Herberton with her 2, Ronell loves nothing more than going for visits and spoiling them. Some weekends see Ronell go to the family mango farmatGilbertRivertovisitherMumPatsy
although she is a more frequent visitor to Croydon and you’ll often see them sitting together on the verandah – looking for someone tochattomaybe .
Her down time is taken up with online shopping, an expensive exercise sometimes – when she gets carried away clicking and watching reality TVshowswithherfavouritesbeingFarmerWants A Wife and Married At First Sight, whilst nibbling on Jools treats – handy having a neighbour with such culinary skills. When she’s not in front of the TV you will see Ronell pottering in the garden or taking her new ‘baby’ Frosty (long haired Jack Russellpuppy)forwalks.

So, here’s to Ronell Murphy, Council’s very own ‘Have A Chat.’ May your broom keep flying, and your conversations keep bringing smiles to our community!

Be wary when using voice-activated AI services like Siri to contact businesses or visit websites. Scammers may manipulate search results, causing these tools to connect you with fraudulent phone numbers or direct you to deceptive websites.
Typical scam themes include debt reduction, package delivery, and counterfeit business texts. Verify the authenticity of messages by employing a reverse lookup tool, which reveals if others have flagged the number as a scam, i.e: ttps://mxtoolbox.com/ReverseL ookup.aspx
of phishing sites now target mobile devices, underscoring the need for caution when browsing on smartphones and tablets.
SCAM SCENARIO - Voice cloning:
AI chatbots make it easier for scammers to create targeted messages. Be cautious with unexpected messages, even if they seem personalised.
Meet Sophie Wilson, a remote-working road supervisor with a passion for angling. She was recently featured in a renowned Australian angler magazine.
Meet Liam, a hacker who acquired user data, including Sophie's, from a breached fitness app. Using WormGPT, a malicious AI chatbot, Liam swiftly gathers Sophie's work details and personal information.
Posing as Sophie's colleague with the email address TomMcNamara@gmail.com, Liam is able to send her a well-crafted scam message in a very short time.
of financial scams in 2023 were phone scams primarily consisted of robocalls and text messages.
Laura was examining a financial report during her business trip to the Australian Outback when she received a call from an unknown number. Considering it might be a potential client, she answered. Unexpectedly, she heard her daughter Emma's voice on the line, sounding distressed. Emma claimed she was in trouble and needed a few thousand dollars transferred to an account to avoid going to jail, assuring her mother she would explain everything later. Alarmed for her daughter's well-being, Laura hastily transferred the money. Attempts to call the number back were futile, prompting Laura to ring Emma's usual phone number. Emma was baffled by her mother's inquiries, clarifying she was never in any trouble and hadn't requested any money. Laura realised she had been scammed, and the funds were now untraceable since they had been converted to cryptocurrency.
Guard your voice: Scammers use AI to clone voices from social media audio samples for fraudulent calls. Be cautious when sharing audio online.
Establish a family secret word: Create a unique word to verify the authenticity of calls, ensuring your loved ones' safety.
Watch out for voice cloning scams: Scammers may target individuals by mimicking familiar voices. Always verify requests through trusted means.

At the Centre the children have been busy with Mother’s Day craft activities.
On our excursion to the Visitor Information Centre the group explored the gardens and had an opportunity to learn about Croydon’s history by watching a short video.
The children engaged in learning about ANZAC Day and crafted wreaths and crosses in remembrance.
We are now focused on letter-sound relationships as we are learning the letters and sounds of the alphabet.
We have recently cleaned out our greenhouse and added new potting mix. Our greenhouse is now ready for new seeds. If you have any seeds you would like to share with us please feel free to drop them to the Centre for the children to plant in the greenhouse. Ph 07 4748 7100
