Croydon Shire Council
Re-election, Plans for Croydon, and Upcoming Meetings
Hi all in incredible Croydon,
Elected members have been officially at work for near on a month now and we have hit the groundrunningwithourfirstbudgetworkshop done and we will have another one on the 16th afterournextcouncilmeeting.Thisprocesswill goonforcoupleofmonthsuntilwegetitright; butI’llkeepyouinformedasweprogress.
As you may already know, council has decided to move away from the rolling Deputy Mayor position and has appointed Councillor Jonathan Evans as the Deputy Mayor for the next four years. Welcome to the role, Jono! Remember, people, please direct all problems to him as I will be blaming him for everything thatgoeswrong(justkidding). No,butseriously I think that this is the best way forward as continuity is important when dealing with Governmentsandotheragencies.
Well, I have already been to Parliament in Brisbane for a catch-up with all the new and returningMayors.

A WORD FROM OUR MAYOR
Trevor Pickering
Whilst there Jacqui and I also had a meeting with Robbie Katter's Chief of Staff who had to standinforhisbossbecausehehadastomach bug. We didn’t have much time with him so I concentrated on the importance of the Gilbert River bridge and to get Robbie to talk to Bob about the Doppler radar from a Federal Governmentangle.
The next day Jacqui and I flew back into Cairns and went from the airport to a FNQROC meeting at Barlow Park, it was a very unusual meeting for the fact that there was only 4 out of 13 old Mayors there, as the turnover of Councillors and Mayors in North Queensland was mind blowing. I nominated Mayor Barry from Etheridge for the position of chair of the regionalroadsgroupsowecanhopefullymove thefocusalittlemoreourway,Barryisalsothe interim Deputy Chair of the FNQROC until electionsinOctober.
Croydon Anzac Day 2024: Youngsters Shine
I was very pleased to see how many people attended the Anzac dawn service and I was very proud of the incredible kids of Croydon who not only marched but took part in the ceremony by reading stories of past Croydonites who fought for our freedom and ultimately paid the heaviest price, so keep up the good work kids. I know how nervous you must have been, but it will put you in good stead for your future. It’s with great pleasure I can see that the splash park is finally coming along and shouldn’t take to long to have it up and running so watch this space and hopefully thegymwon’tbetofarawayeither.
Exercise Patience and Respect for Shared Spaces
Couple other things that I would like to talk about is the big wet that we wasn’t supposed to have has done a lot of damage to our road network in the Shire and a lot of areas are just too wet at the moment to repair, we are trying but I will ask people to please be patient as things could go from bad to worse if we start havingplantboggedinthemiddleofroads.
Another thing that is bothering me is the very un-Croydon like behaviour of some people, like leaving rubbish and broken glass at the lake and the destruction of other people’s property socomeonCroydonthisisnotus!Haveathink aboutit.
Ok that’s all from me so stay safe and I’ll see youinthenextTele.
Cheers Trevor

When the Council advertised a plumbing apprenticeship, Aidan seized the opportunity. Recognising it as a chance to formalise his skills in an area of interest and remain close to home, he eagerly applied.

ROAD LOOKUP
• A common source of frustration for members of the public is identifying the responsible agency or contact for enquiries about specific roads. To help ease this frustration; the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has recently added a new feature to our OLD Traffic website, ' Road Lookup'.
The 'Road Lookup ' feature allows users to enter a road name (using a Google Maps search) which then provides the relevant road owner and contact details. ' Road Lookup' is accessible at www.qldtraffic.qld.gov.au/lookup.
The QLD Traffic website can also be accessed via TMR's website, 'Contact us' page at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/aboutus/contact-us. The feature is currently available on the QLD Traffic website and will soon be enabled on the QLD Traffic iPhone and Android apps.

How to spot it Mobile Device Compromise
Your passwords or account details have been changed.
Unknown apps are appearing randomly on your device.
Your device is slower than normal.
TOP TIP
When it comes to mobile devices, ensure that all your passwords are unique, and avoid openly storing credentials on the device. Be cautious of public Wi-Fi networks, as malicious networks could grant hackers access to your device.
Use these steps
Stay Informed: Be aware of potential threats and stay informed about security best practices.
Email Safety: Avoid clicking on suspicious email links or downloading attachments from unknown senders. If you suspect an email is compromised, alert your contacts.
App Caution: Only install apps from trusted sources (official app stores). Regularly review app permissions and uninstall any unnecessary apps.
Web Browsing: Be cautious when browsing websites. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading files from untrusted sites.
Work Files: If your mobile device is used for personal purposes, consider keeping work-related files and apps on it only if absolutely necessary.
If you receive an out-of-character message from a contact, promptly inform them. It could be a sign that their account was compromised. In case of device compromise, remember to change all passwords once the device is secure. Stay vigilant!
SCAM SCENARIO - Homebuyer:
Emilia, who had diligently saved for years to buy a house, finally found her dream home. After her offer was accepted, she received an email from a title agent instructing her to wire the down payment. Eager to proceed, she promptly transferred the funds. However, a twist awaited her. Another email arrived, supposedly from her realtor and a different title agent named Jane, providing details for the closing. When Emilia inquired about her payment, the new title agent revealed they hadn’t received anything. Shocked, Emilia realised Jane’s account had been compromised, and cybercriminals were impersonating her todeceiveclients.
A cautionary tale: Verify every communication during real estatetransactionstoavoidfallingvictimtoscams.
When purchasing a house, exercise caution with emails. Before clicking links or transferring money, analyse each message.
Even if it appears relevant, verify its authenticity through a known contact in person or via an alternative method.
Remember, not all suspicious emails fit the typical “phishy” pattern—vigilance is key!

Educators and children have been busy during the school holidays with cooking. We went on excursions to the Heritage Precinct, Anzac Park and Library and took part in the First 5 Forever program.
Educators organised play-based learning and activities over the vacation care period to make the holidays exciting and fun for the children.
At the centre children have been discussing what they would like to become when they grow up. We have had lots of doctors, nurses, soldiers, and bull riders at the Centre.
As part of exploring emergency services, we have also been practicing sustainability. The children have used recycled materials to construct planes, helicopters, fire trucks and police cars.
With lots of love and care our greenhouse is producing fruit and veg. Educators and children have been gathering the produce to share with their friends and families.

Recap:

The Resin Art Workshop hosted by RRW Art, led by the talented Rachel and her mum, proved to be an exhilarating event for the 16 participants in attendance.
Resin art, a form of arts and crafts that utilises resin as a primary supply, can be mixed with paints or inks to create stunning patterns and designs. The possibilities are endless when combining various materials, resulting in unique pieces reflecting each artist's creativity.
The workshop commenced with Rachel and her mum demonstrating techniques and material reactions on a Lazy Susan board. Participants eagerly experimented, realising that each creation was as distinctive as its creator.
Following a short break, the focus shifted to a canvas, where Rachel showcased how to incorporate various materials like crystals, shells, and foils. The group was inspired to start anew, now fearless in mixing materials to craft their resin art masterpieces.
The event was an undeniable success, with everyone enjoying themselves and yearning to continue as they gained confidence in understanding material reactions. Although they'll have to wait until next year's workshop, the anticipation is high for another unforgettable resin art experience in Croydon!

A i rborne E l ectromagneti c (AE M) survey wit h 20km li ne spac ing over a la rge area of n ort h -east Q uee ns la nd from J un e to J u ly 2024. T h e survey is part of a la rger geop hysica l s urvey p rogram that aims to ga ther n ew info rmat io n abo ut t he po tent ia l g ro un d w ate r , m in er al a n d energy reso urces concealed be n eath th e s urface T his info rmat io n w i ll lead t o more i nfo r med reso urce ma n agem ent a nd to bette r ta rget ed i nvestme nt.
Why is this survey important?
This survey is being carried out to obtain data that will enhance understanding of geology and natural resources of the region. This informatio n w i ll support future informed dec is ion making for resource management.
Survey Method
Light aircraft are fitted with instruments to map variations in the natu ral electrical conductivity of the ground to a depth of several hundred metres.
During the survey, a signal will be transmitted from the aircraft into the ground The sig nal is similar to that produced by a power line, passing quickly as the aircraft moves. To wed antennae can detect t he returned signa ls. The nature of these signals are ana lysed to map variations in the electrica l conductiv ity of the g ro und ca us ed by t he presence of groundwater and some minerals.
