Our devices are home to our important data. If they are damaged, lost or destroyed, your data may be lost. Whether it’s hardware failure, theft, natural disaster or a virus, recovering data can be expensive and sometimes impossible.
A backup is a digital copy of crucial data, including photos, documents, and financial records.
Choosing What to Back Up:
Prioritize data based on importance and potential impact if lost.
If your data is lost, you can restore it using the backup.
Backups can be stored in the cloud (similar to internet storage) or on physical media (like external hard drives).
Backup Scope:
Decide whether to back up specific files (e.g., photos, documents, messages) or the entire system.
A system image captures all data, including the operating system and applications, allowing full system restoration.
Backup Frequency:
Establish a regular backup routine: Hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly, depending on data changes and importance.
Consistent backups ensure an up-to-date copy of your files.
Automated Backups:
Use services or programs that automatically back up your files.
Cloud storage providers and backup software simplify the process.
Windows 10/11:
Both systems offer builtin backup functions.
Visit Microsoft’s website for detailed instructions on backing up and restoring files.
For businesses, consider critical information like calendars, emails, customer details, and financial records.
Include all devices with essential data (smartphones, tablets, computers, servers) in your backup plan.
Check that your backups work:
It’s important that you regularly try to restore your backups to check that they are working properly. Testing whether you can restore your data will give you peace of mind that, if you lose any data, your backup will work.
How to back up your device:
OneDrive Cloud:
OneDrive, a Microsoft product, provides cloud storage.
Save photos and files to OneDrive for easy access from any device.
macOS Backup Options:
Use external storage devices or sync files via iCloud.
Explore third-party cloud backup services compatible with macOS
Apple iOS:
On iPhones, back up data to iCloud or a computer. Apple’s website provides further guidance on iOS file backup and restoration.

A mathematician finds a magic lamp and rubs it. A genie appears and offers three wishes. The mathematician thinks for a moment and says, “First, I want to be 10% smarter.” The genie nods, and instantly the mathematician’s IQ increases. For his second wish, he says, “Make me 20% smarter.” Again, the genie complies. Finally, the mathematician smirks and says, “For my last wish, make me 30% smarter.” The genie sighs and says, “You do realize that you’re now 10 times smarter than any human, right?” The mathematician grins and says, “Exactly. Now I can finally understand women.
