Scammers have many ways they try to trick you. Know what to look for.

Phishing emails and texts

Phishing is away cybercriminalstrick you into giving them personal information. They do this by sending fake emails or text messages that look like they come from a person or organisation you trust. These scams could include a link to a fake login page or attachment. If you fall for it, you could lose money and access to your accounts, or even have your identity stolen. An example of this would be receiving an email with a link to a fake bank website asking for your login details. Giving this away could compromise your accounts.

What is phishing?

What is phishing? Phishing involves cybercriminals posing as large organizations you know or trust. They send you deceptive emails or texts, attempting to steal your online banking logins, credit card details, or passwords. The consequences of phishing can range from information loss to financial harm or identity theft. When these emails and texts are highly targeted at the recipient, it’s known as spear-phishing.

If you suspect malicious software (malware) from a phishing email or text message or social media, follow these steps:

Email Phishing:

If you’ve received a suspicious email but haven’t clicked any links, contact your email provider. Seek advice on blocking future phishing emails.

Report the Scam:

Use the National Anti-Scam Centre (Scamwatch) to report the scam.

Summary:

Text Message Phishing:

If the phishing attempt was via text message, report it to your telecommunications provider. Visit the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Phone scams page for additional information.

Social Media Phishing:

If the phishing occurred on social media, report the attempt directly on the platform.

Secure Financial Accounts: Contact your bank.

Notify Relevant Services: Reach out to agencies like the ATO or Services Australia.

Update Account Passwords: Change passwords for all accessed accounts.

Report the Incident: Use ReportCyber to report phishing.

Check Credit Reports: Verify unauthorized attempts.

Block Future Phishing: Seek prevention advice from service providers.

A farmer decided to try his hand at stand-up comedy and entered a local talent show. His first joke was, "Why did the scarecrow win an award? Because he was outstanding in his field!" The audience chuckled politely. Encouraged, the farmer continued, "What do you call a cow with no legs? Ground beef!" The audience laughed a bit louder. Feeling confident, the farmer told his final joke, "Why don't farmers ever tell secrets in the cornfield? Because the corn has ears!" The crowd burst into laughter, and the farmer won first prize.

He asked, "Are you two cowboys for real?" The first cowboy replied, "Real? Of course, we're real cowboys!" The tourist looked puzzled and said, "But where are your horses?"
