Rotary helping to keep children safe with dogs The speaker at a recent Cromwell Rotary meeting was Pauline Blomfield who has spent many years training dogs and studying their behaviour. This experience motivated her to write several books, aimed at different age groups, to help keep children safe around dogs. Our Rotary club agreed this as an admirable objective and purchased eighteen books for use by six classes at Cromwell Primary School. Goldfields school advised they already had sufficient resources. On Friday, made welcome as always by the staff and students of the school, Rotary President Andrew Burton had the pleasure of presenting copies of: I WILL NOT GROWL; KEEP ME SAFE; HOW TO KEEP KIDS SAFE WITH DOGS by Pauline to Danella Smallridge during a school assembly. Rotarian Denis McEntyre brought his two-year-old German Shepherd along to meet some of the children, but reminded them that not every dog was as well behaved and friendly as Maisy.

Cromwell Memorial Hall Community Update At the Cromwell Community Board’s meeting on Tuesday 7 November Board members considered a report to progress the redevelopment project for the Cromwell Memorial Hall.

The outcome was that the resolution to proceed with the refurbishment of the hall was rescinded.

Also rescinded was the resolution that came out of the April 2017 notice of motion to establish the cost for a new build of the same plan and level of service as the rebuild option.

This then left no live resolutions for any project to be undertaken in respect of the Hall.

To determine what any future project in respect of the Hall will look like the Board resolved to hold a workshop before the end of the year with the aim of identifying if there is a more appropriate alternative site and scope for a new Hall.

It will also determine what to do with the current Hall.

“I understand that there are a range of frustrations in the community,” said Cromwell Community Board Chair Neil Gillespie. “Some feel this has dragged on too long and some of the view that the refurbish option was not relevant for the community. The reality is that democracy has to be applied and local government processes need to be followed and that has got the Board to this point.

“This decision provides the Board with the opportunity to canvas wider and look at how the hall project fits within the wider development of the Cromwell and its future needs. I expect that the workshop will enable the Board to establish a path forward for the Hall and consider what community engagement is to be undertaken.”

In the words of an Otago soldier following this attack: “By some fatal miscalculation a considerable part of the entire weight of the artillery barrage fell across the area occupied by the first waves of our assaulting troops. The immediate outcome was that the two leading Companies, an Otago Company and a Southland Company, became seriously involved in the destructive fire of our own artillery. The losses incurred were at once severe”.

The news from the Western Front was not so good. The NZ Division, still on the front lines in the Ypres sector, was struggling to survive the bitter winter. During mid- November to early December 1917, only one significant action took place within the NZ Division area. This involved an attack by the 1st Otago and 1st Canterbury battalions on Polderhoek Chateau. The fortified ruins of the chateau occupied a prominent piece of ground from which the Germans could observe and fire onto the NZ lines. Action was required to prevent this. When the assault began the troops managed to advance only 180 metres before the attack ground to a halt. The New Zealanders suffered 500 casualties, including 100 dead; some killed by their own artillery. Flawed artillery support was not the only reason the attack faltered. The infantry had also failed to press home the assault, their resolve and ability to do so weakened by a lack of experienced officers and NCOs and inadequate training. The overall lesson was clear: the NZ Division had not yet recovered from the loss of so many experienced troops at Passchendaele.

The Sinai and Palestine Campaigns in which the NZ Mounted Rifle Brigade (NZMRB) were involved have already been reported earlier in this column. However, it would be remiss not to again re-state the major roll that the NZMRB had throughout those campaigns within the ANZAC Mounted Division of the British Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF).

The crowning glory for the New Zealanders was, of course, when, in November 1917, they outflanked the Ottoman Palestine defences by seizing Beersheba, the inland anchor of the Ottoman line. As part of this operation the NZMRB stormed the redoubt of Tel el Saba in the face of fierce defence. As a result, the EEF then overran most of southern Palestine, capturing Jaffa and the historic city of Jerusalem.

Oral Contraceptive Pill is Now Available Over the Counter.

Great news for women who regularly take the oral contraceptive pill – now the law has been updated so that you can buy it directly from the Pharmacy without visiting a GP. Our pharmacists have undertaken a specialised training so that we are able to sell ‘the pill’ if it is deemed appropriate.

It certainly will be more convenient for ladies to see a pharmacist in our consulting room without an appointment. The consultation will always be private, and there is a thorough checklist of questions for you to answer before the pill will be dispensed. For instance, ladies must be at least 16 years old, have been prescribed the oral contraceptive in the past three years, and stick to the type that has been previously used.

There are several risk factors associated with taking the oral contraceptive (BMI, blood pressure, family history etc), and pharmacists will check these with the woman to interpret an overall risk assessment, before making a clinical decision on whether it is in fact appropriate to be supplied by a Pharmacist, or whether the woman should return to the Doctor. The health referral system in New Zealand is very strongly adhered to - the public can be reassured that if one health professional is not clinically equipped to deal with a situation, they will refer upwards to the next level of expertise.

The pharmacist will ALWAYS act in the best interests of the woman concerned.

TRUST CONTRIBUTES OVER $700,000 IN LATEST FUNDING ROUND Seventeen applicants, spread throughout the Central Lakes district will receive a mixture of grant support from Central Lakes Trust totaling $717,182 for the month of October.

Combined with the 50 tertiary education scholarship recipients, whom each received $2,500, sees the Trust disperse over $820,000 worth of funding.

Alpine Community Development Trust, Catholic Social Services, Hospice Southland, and Age Concern Otago receive a combined $151,500 to assist with operational costs over the coming 12 – 20 months.

“The wellbeing of our community members is very important to the Trust. We try to ensure funds are allocated where they will have the most impact for the community.

Supporting these causes, ensures many of these charities continue to provide important services to our community,” says Trust Chairman, Tony Hill.

The Trust is also supporting a pilot programme; Central Otago Youth Employment Pilot Project. The pilot is to develop a coordinated learning pathway so young people who may otherwise choose to leave the region because of a lack of coordinated education and training beyond school, continue to engage in education, training and employment.

The programme will work with identified students to create a vocational pathway, provide mentoring and coordinate support to ensure students set and meet long term aspirational goals.

“The Trust keenly supports educational projects to improve educational outcomes for the people

of our region, we look forward to seeing the results of the pilot in April 2019,” says Tony.

In addition, Upper Clutha Tracks Trust receive $80,000 towards creating the Hawea Flat to Hawea River Track between Hawea to Albert Town and Wanaka.

While the restoration of the Stewarts Cottage Menzies Dam by the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust also receives a boost of support with $84,411 from the Trust.

Other projects to receive grants include Wanaka Associated Football Club, whom receive $40,000 for a mobile storage and changing room facility, Poolburn School with support towards the upgrade of their tennis court to a multi-sport surface, and Ophir Hall receives $22,500 towards their kitchen renovation.

Molyneux Park receives support towards new cricket covers, which enables players across all ages to develop skills on a high grade wicket, and also has the added benefit of enabling four-day first class domestic cricket events to be hosted at the ground.

“The Trust’s annual grants budget is $6.3m and the latest round of grants takes the total approved for this financial year to over $3.8m” Susan Finlay, Central Lakes Trust’s Acting Chief Executive said.

Thank you to Maxine Knowler for reminding our Year 13 Leavers of the great advice contained in the principles of our Kawa and congratulations to all students on their pride in their achievements and pride in our school. He rawe to Angelina Rolston our Dux for 2017.

Angelina is an astute, self-assured and empathetic young women who is off to study Law and Politics at Otago University next year.

“It takes a whole village to raise a child” is a well known Nigerian proverb that I shared at our senior prize giving recently. The proverb highlights for me one of the strengths of learning at this school and in this community.

There is a special connectedness, goodwill and aroha between our school and community. This

Year 13 students and staff enjoyed a nostalgic final game of 5 bat rounders in their Tegan Buchanan - Cromwell Junior Sports Person of the Year last week of school. This group had a lovely farewell evening together on Monday last week with their Dean and Year 13 teachers eating an enormous amount of pizza, competing tenaciously in the school quiz and sharing an entertaining slide show from their years’ at school. I take real pride in seeing how these once cautious Year 7 students have grown into mature, responsible, fun loving, good humoured and respectful young adults. We are planning for a number of staffing changes next year. Hello there Cromwell, The Highlands 501 was held last weekend and I want to say a huge thank you to all our friends and supporters in the Cromwell community from all the team here at Highlands. We hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as we did – it felt like we had all of Cromwell behind us, including mother nature!

To the Highlands team, once again you’ve delivered in spades. Hosting an international event like the Highlands 501 takes a lot of work and you all rose to the challenge and delivered the exceptional. You should all be very proud of what you achieved. I’d also like to make special mention of the incredible job that Kynan Yu did. This was his first event as Race Director and he continued our reputation of delivering a bigger and better event every year – congratulations mate, and Happy 40th you old bugger.

We had thousands of spectators through the gates over the weekend, as well as the teams and drivers from the Australian Endurance Championship, and they couldn’t say enough good things about Highlands and what the Cromwell region has to offer.

We want people to come to Highlands to experience the exceptional but we couldn’t do it without the support of so many people in the local community.

Everyone in the local service industry who hosted, served or welcomed visitors to the Highlands 501 played their part in enhancing the region’s reputation for delivering authentic, world-class tourism offerings.

Cromwell doesn’t do things by halves. We don’t just do wool, we do world class merino. We don’t just do fruit, we have some of the best produce in the world.

We don’t just do bike tracks, we’re fast becoming the hub for some of the world’s most beautiful cycleways.

We’re already working on next year’s event and you can expect the same great experience, just with a new headline act! Watch out for some exciting news before Christmas.

I would like to congratulate Chairman Neil for his leadership and patience while working through the report and subsequent discussion. Nigel McKinlay and Anna Harrison had obviously read the report and understood not only the actual options being suggested but the consequences of those five options.

Once again the CEO and Council officers gave unbiased opinions, which reinforced both the legal decision previously received and the outcome of the report from the Australasian firm, Morrison low. All of this advice however was ignored by four members of the board.

It was amazing to hear members ask questions, which if the report had been read properly were totally unnecessary. at one stage even the Mayor pointed out the answer to a question was on a certain page of the report – unbelievable that a board member should need to be told this!!

It is also obvious from some of the comments that have been made, especially on Facebook, that some people are ill-informed about the process that has taken place to date and which must be followed into the future.
