BIG NAMES OF THE FUTURE TO PERFORM LOCALLY The programme for this year’s Southern Lakes Festival of Colour, launched at Wanaka on Monday evening, includes a local performance featuring two big names of the future. Former University of Otago and now London based baritone, Julien Van Mellaerts will be joined by South African pianist, James Ballieu in a concert at the Coronation Hall, Bannockburn on Tuesday 2 April. Julien Van Mellaerts is the only person to have ever won first prize in both the Kathleen Ferrier Awards and the Wigmore Hall - Kohn Foundation International Song Competition. Julien was also runner up in the art song division of last year’s prestigious Concours Musical International de Montreal. James Baillieu, professor and head of piano accompaniment at the Royal Academy of Music in London has been the prize-winner of the Wigmore Hall Song Competition, Das Lied International

Song Competition, Kathleen Ferrier and Richard Tauber Competitions. James has given solo and chamber recitals throughout Europe and further afield and he also collaborates with a wide range of singers including Dame Kiri te Kanawa. Julien and James are two of the leading young performers of art song and lieder. Both are on course to rise to international prominence. It’s a long way from the bright lights of London and the famous venues of Above: Julien Van Mellaerts in the foreground and James Ballieu Britain and Europe where in the background they normally perform to the boutique Coronation Hall at outstanding musical venue. Bannockburn. But this complete contrast is an immense opportunity for locals Tickets go on sale on Friday 22 February to hear them in concert and further via the website www.festivalofcolour. recognition of the Coronation Hall as an co.nz or by calling 022 484 9669.

Lawyers – Big Bad Wolf or Just Misunderstood? It has been over six years since I started working as a lawyer and there is one consistent comment and theme that I can almost guarantee I will hear at least once a week which goes along the lines of “going to the lawyer is my one of least favourite pastimes only surpassed by the dentist”. I am often told by both friends and clients that they often feel intimidated prior to the initial meeting as they don’t know what to expect. In order to make your visit as stress free as possible there are a few things you can do; 1. Call ahead and make an appointment – let the lawyer know what the appointment will be in relation to. 2. Bring proof of ID and address with you – the new Anti-Money Laundering legislation means we need to identify new clients in the same way that all banks, accountants and real estate agents need to. 3. Bring all information in relation to your issue - the best evidence is communications that are in writing.

Did you know that you are entitled to better prescription subsidies if you are a high user? You will be issued a Prescription Subsidy Card after TWENTY $5 prescriptions have been paid for at the pharmacy. The purpose of the Subsidy Card is to help all NZ families who face high prescription costs – there is no income testing involved. To be eligible for the card we need to know who is in your family – for instance any dependent children (under 18 years) and their caregivers all living under one roof. A family unit can also be one adult or one de facto couple with no dependents. Our computer system links together the family unit so that the cumulative prescription count is accurate over the course of the year. The prescription year runs from 1st February to 31st January – and our “magic box” counts the items and lets the Pharmacist know when 20 items have been issued. However, the computer is not magic enough to automatically know about prescriptions dispensed at OTHER pharmacies – you must let us know that there may be other items to include as well. This is well worth while. If you have been issued a Subsidy Card at one pharmacy and take a prescription to another pharmacy, make sure you present your Subsidy Card with the prescription to allow the costs to be processed correctly. So, remember: 1. 2018 Subsidy Cards are now expired, and prescription charges will usually be $5 per item; 2. Let us know who is in your family unit; and 3. Let us know if you periodically use another pharmacy, and we will help to make sure you get your full subsidy entitlements!

Charitable Trust being set up to deliver a new Community and Cultural Centre in Cromwell A group of local residents are in the process of registering a Charitable Trust to deliver a new Community and Cultural Centre building on the site of the existing Memorial Hall in keeping with the preferred wishes of the public as highlighted under the recent Cromwell Master Plan. A Trust with between 5 to 10 Trustees called the ‘Cromwell Cultural Centre Trust’ convened by James Dicey is undergoing Community consultation to seek a local mandate for this task. The group has started the process to obtain approval of the Cromwell Community Board to create and operate the centre on behalf of the community. Mr Dicey advises that the key reason why they have formed this Trust is because experience with similar projects around the country has shown that local ownership by way of a Community driven Trust is often the best vehicle by which to deliver significant Community assets in a cost effective, timely and efficient way. Examples of this are the recently

constructed Cromwell Hockey Turf, also Community and Sports Centres and theatres in Invercargill, Gore, Tapanui and many other centres. In addition to the concept as outlined in Option 3 of the recent Master Plan, the Trustees are committed to include appropriate memorial recognition honouring the RSA, together with acknowledgement of Cromwell’s history including the part that goldmining and Chinese diggings etc have played and more recently the building of the Clyde Dam. It is also proposed that the Cromwell museum be relocated to this new Centre. Appropriate large flexible spaces for events, eg weddings and conferences, are envisaged together with a variety of other rooms and spaces for Community bookings. The Trust has planned discussions with the Town & Country Club to see if mutually beneficial ways can be found to work together on the project.

As part of the goal of creating a comprehensive Community and Cultural Centre, it is proposed that significant spaces be provided for the arts including exhibitions and practical demonstrations. A notable planned addition is a modern theatre with permanently tiered seating for at least 500, including a quality ‘fly tower’ to safely accommodate the best of the performing arts from school and local productions to National and International touring companies. The Trust is presently seeking a Community mandate whereby they can have the means to deliver and manage this project on behalf of the Community. They have sought permission to present this proposal to the Cromwell Community Board on March 19, 2019. They welcome any comments from local residents and groups by email to: cromwellculturalcentretrust@gmail. com.

Weeding out pests in Lake Dunstan Popular boating and swimming spots have been added to the control programme tackling lake weed in Lake Dunstan. More than $200,000 is due to be spent this financial year to tackle the invasive plant pest lagarosiphon. The funding comes from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), Otago Regional Council and Contact Energy. “We are focussing our efforts this season on all of the popular recreation spots such as the Old Cromwell Town beach and Bannockburn,” says Marcus Girvan, Biosecurity Programme Manager at Boffa Miskell, working on behalf of LINZ. “We also plan to place more emphasis on boat launching ramps so that boaties don’t snag weed on the way out of the lake.” Work around the lake will involve divers pulling out the weed by hand, herbicide spraying from boats and helicopters and using a cutter to slice the weeds away from the surface. “This is good news for users of the lake,” says Glen Christiansen, Chair of the Guardians of Lake Dunstan. “Whilst there is a significant amount of lagarosiphon in Lake Dunstan, focussing on high use areas will improve the experience of people using the lake for

swimming and boating.”

back in November.

Lagarosiphon spreads quickly and can grow up to five metres in tall. It’s hoped that by clearing areas such as the boat ramps the invasion of the plant may be kept in check.

“It’s disappointing we couldn’t use herbicide at Old Cromwell,” says Marcus.

“With so much weed in Lake Dunstan, preventing the spread of lagarosiphon to other waterways is absolutely critical,” says Richard Lord, Team Leader Biosecurity Compliance at Otago Regional Council. “I’d like to urge anyone using a boat, jet ski or kayak on the lake to check for weeds when they leave the lake and clean everything thoroughly.” A recent inspection by NIWA showed where treatments for lagaroshiphon have had an impact in the lake. At Northburn, Lowburn Boat Harbour and Lowburn Inlet lagarosiphon has been pushed back and native plants are starting to regrow. “Last year we saw really positive results in most areas where work was carried out to treat lagarosiphon. The main area where there wasn’t as much impact was around Bendigo”, adds Marcus.

“The results from NIWA show that the herbicide diquat has been very effective in most parts of the lake. It’s a safe treatment to use as it doesn’t affect swimmers or others using the lake water, and doesn’t harm native plants. Although we do recommend that people don’t use the lake in the treated area until 24 hours after the treatment has been completed.” The work programme for Lake Dunstan is being led by the Lake Dunstan Aquatic Weed Management Group which includes LINZ, the Ministry for Primary Industries, NIWA, Contact Energy, Boffa Miskell, Otago Regional Council, Fish and Game, the Guardians of Lake Dunstan, Central Otago District Council, the Clutha Fisheries Trust and the Cromwell and Districts Community Trust.

Herbicide spraying at Old Cromwell had to be delayed due to heavy sediment in the water. Instead of spraying, Boffa Miskell cut the weeds

LETTERS

TO THE

EDITOR

I am heartened with the article from ORC in ODT Friday February 1st regarding a proposed “business hub” for the ORC in Cromwell which makes huge sense because much of the ORC business is, I understand, in Central Otago, and Cromwell is at the geographic centre so can easily service the whole of the area from there including Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell, the Maniototo, Alexandra and Roxburgh areas. Can the Chairman or CEO, let the public know the current percentages of ORC work in these areas together with a breakdown of staff involvement to service these areas as a percentage of the total staff? ORC Chairman Stephen Woodhead said it makes sense for a new headquarters to be in Dunedin but I say not so if the majority of work is outside Dunedin. It seems very clear to many ORC Ratepayers that a Head Office in Dunedin is completely wrong if most of the work is outside Dunedin. The Head Office could be anywhere. Why does the Head Office NEED to be in Dunedin? Is it because it always has been? Clearly the Head Office should be located much nearer the centre of work. Also why is the current Board seemingly hell bent on owning a brand new building in Dunedin when you could save the estimated $30 million and rent suitable premises. The $30 million can then be spent where it was originally intended which is on Pest Control and other core activities. That is why ratepayers have been paying all these years. I challenge the ORC to do a referendum on whether they should build or rent and I am confident that the majority would say “rent” and that the main offices should not be in Dunedin. Concerned Ratepayer. WATER QUALITY A PROBLEM? Pure Water Central can help you with all your water filtration requirements. The College News Kia ora koutou to our College community. With 506 students our roll is the largest since the late 1980’s and looks set to continue to grow in coming years. We have 18 students in our Apartments Outdoor Pursuits programme from Germany and from Whangārei to Christchurch and internationals from at least 7 different countries. Another 30 students have arrived from all over Aotearoa. Our school is close to ‘full’ and we have already had a further conversation with the Ministry of Education on the redevelopment plans for our school. Our mihi whakatau in our first week was a very fitting and visible way to welcome new students and staff to our school. It highlights the important role that staff and returning students have to manaaki, to care and support those new to school and Cromwell. We have been particularly impressed with how our new Year 7 students are settling into their learning and the culture of our school. We have 22 Year 13 students trained for the peer support programme and they are working with small groups of Year 7’s to strengthen relationships and confidence. We have welcomed 4 new staff to our school. Janelle Carpenter, Year 8, and Bridget Carter, Year 7, have both taught at Aurora College in Invercargill and we welcome back Karen Gallagher who is teaching in Year 8 and is our Dean for this level also. With Di Ferris’ pending medical retirement we have just appointed Leeann Tombling to teach Year 9 and 10 mathematics for this term. We have also appointed Melanie Mills as our assistant sports coordinator and she will focus her mahi in the Year 7 and 8 area of our school. The two main areas of focus for our annual plan this year are: • Quality Teaching eg inclusive teaching and learning, nurturing excellence, digital technologies and ensuring our practice is culturally responsive; and • Wellbeing for students and 22

staff eg strengthening relationships and connectedness, further restorative training and improving student agency eg Sticks and Stones and School Council. We look forward to sharing more on our goals for 2019 in our community consultation meeting later this term. A highlight of our provisional NCEA results for 2018 was achievement between 5% and 9% above national Decile 8 figures for all levels of NCEA, a first for the College. This has been a key academic focus for the school for several years. It reflects considerable effort by students and dedicated teaching, tracking and mentoring undertaken by staff – he rawe! The Education Review Office, ERO, arrive on 18 February as part of their normal cycle

of school review. They are looking closely at student wellbeing and achievement, particularly the support we provide for those needing acceleration with their learning and achievement. It is an excellent opportunity to review, with ERO, the progress since our last review in 2014 and confirm the next steps for further development and improvements. On 26 and 27 February ‘Mind over Manner’ workshops are being held in our Auditorium. These neurodiversity workshops are open to parents, educators and agencies who care and work with young people who could be diagnosed with ASD/Aspergers, OCD, Anxiety, ADHD, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Dyslexia. The programme is very

highly regarded and I encourage interested parents to attend – please see the flyer. Friday 15 February is our Athletics Day. It is a mix of house competition and competitive events and parents are very welcome to attend. Parents are welcome to share in a morning tea located near the Ministry of Education building between 10.30 and 11.00am. We have had less than 10 days of school and we are quickly into the rhythm of learning and excited for the opportunities that this year will bring for our students and our school. Fresh starts are invigorating and I have urged our students to make the most of their learning and put our school motto in action – Whāia te taumata – pursuing the highest peaks and Deserving Success. Mason Stretch Tumuaki (Principal)
