Scholarship Recipient Urges Others to Have a Go Being awarded Cromwell College’s first Biology Scholarship late last year took sports-mad student Lana Deaker very much by surprise. “I didn’t quite believe it. I was happy with how I’d done in the exam and the effort I’d put into it but didn’t think it was enough for scholarship.” Only 3% of the more than 10,500 students in New Zealand who sit the exam are awarded the $500 Scholarship prize. Now on a gap year, Lana(18) is grateful for the help and encouragement she received and urges others to have a go, even if, like her, they think their chances might be slim.

“I’m hugely thankful to Mr(Stuart)Land who helped me and Ms(Jane)Swire. To anyone thinking of having a go at scholarship get someone to help, put in some effort and you never know. At the very least you will learn some skills that may help you down the track.” Lana says that while she had to travel quite often for sport and found it trickier at a small school getting all her subjects to fit in her timetable, there were also advantages of doing all her secondary schooling at Cromwell. “The teachers probably get to know the students better especially in senior school so you get a lot of help. For scholarship I was lucky that Mr Land set up a lunchtime tutorial and it was a small class.” Lana is currently doing an apprenticeship at NRG gym and intends to pursue a career in the sports industry. At college she was successful in multi-sports, cross-country running and cycling events, as well gaining her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and being a house and peer support leader. “I hope my scholarship inspires others

to have a go, it’s a great challenge and teaches you to learn beyond what is taught in normal classes.” Academic Monitoring Pays Dividends Meanwhile in another first for the school, the college’s NCEA results from 2018 were above the national average for similar schools by between 3% and 10 percent, Principal Mason Stretch said. All levels of NCEA students(Years 11 to 13) had exceeded national averages for Decile 8 schools and this was largely a result of closer year-round tracking of student achievement, he said. A new tracking system, introduced two years ago, allowed teachers to quickly see where a student may be having difficulty and provide help. The school employs a part-time NCEA support mentor, Suzanne Smith, whose job it is to help students manage their academic work. “She refocuses students and sets a clear plan with them to achieve their goals. Suzanne develops a great relationship with students and helps them keep on track and the monitoring means there are no surprises, we know exactly where everyone is at. Our teachers have done a fabulous job in academic mentoring

and adapting programmes to suit which has also been a huge factor in the higher NCEA results and increased endorsements given for academic achievement last year.” The school, which now has 504 students, was also working on a ‘big push’ on Year 7 to 10 academic monitoring. “We want to grow the culture of academic excellence throughout the whole school and nurture those who want to excel. We have a more diverse curriculum with around 80 students doing distance learning and more age groups being offered things like music and drama, science club and scholarship mentoring. The larger role will help in terms of resources, it’s a good place to be.” Progress on the school’s redevelopment was in the planning phase with a business case and education brief being developed this year. Construction work, however, was not likely to begin in earnest until 2021. “We will manage, we may have to repurpose some spaces or add temporary buildings but we are very much on to working closely with the Ministry of Education to get things happening as quickly as possible.” Editorial and photo supplied

Mockingbird – a comedic look at the significant issue of depression

One in seven new mothers and one in 10 new fathers fall into depression after the birth of their child – that’s the starting point of Lisa Brickell’s comedy Mockingbird. “We want the audience to walk away with big smiles on their faces, feeling hopeful” she said. “it’s a serious topic done with comedy and original music.” The play explores the previously off- limits subject of mental health through the use of humour, mask and music. Based on the true stories of four generations of women Mockingbird is a tongue in- cheek portrayal of both postnatal psychosis and depression. Norwegian Kiwi actor Siri Embla said one factor that contributed to new parents becoming depressed was a disconnection from nature and natural cycles. “This can lead to isolation” she said.

Ms Brickell modern families were focused on appearing strong and not asking and getting support when needed. “Working on this play has been revealing. The parent can think they aren’t good enough to be a parent. Depressive episodes could last for a long time and post- natal depression could even descend into suicidal thoughts” The purpose of the play is to open the lid on something seldom seriously discussed, inform and learn about

change. “You can change things” Ms Brickell said. “This is a significant issue and we’re bringing it out into the open”. The show, is a very physical performance over 60 minutes followed by a 30-minute question and answer session which has proved popular over the three weeks the theatre troupe have been touring Mockingbird around the country. It is ten years since Ruth Dudding last was in Central Otago, as field Producer and camera operator for Dancing with the Stars. Lisa Brickell has long family roots with Otago dating back to the gold rush era. She has family in Wanaka and visits often. Norwegian born Siri Embla has never been to this part of the country so she is really looking forward to her introduction to Central Otago. Mockingbird is on in the Coronation Hall, Bannockburn on Friday 22 March at 7.30pm.

Medication Classification System in NZ Part II What is an OTC medicine? Well, OTC stands for “over the counter”. These are medicines that are NOT prescription medicines and are NOT complementary medicines. They can be supplied as: - General Sales medicines (freely available from groceries and garages as well as pharmacies); - Pharmacy Medicines (available from a pharmacy without a prescription); or - Pharmacist-Only Medicines (available from a pharmacist without a prescription). Take diclofenac for example. Diclofenac in a gel form called Voltaren Emugel is a General Sales medicine as there is very little risk to the consumer (but read the packaging for disclaimers). The next level up is diclofenac 12.5mg which is a self-select medicine (Pharmacy Medicine) for mild pain and swelling. Then if you need diclofenac 25mg (Voltaren Rapid) for moderates aches the Pharmacist will have to talk to you (otherwise known as the friendly interrogation!), and your name and address will be recorded. Moving on the the next level is the 50mg, 75mg SR and 100mg SR forms which can only be prescribed by a GP on prescription. So you can see the health system has many checks and balances in place to ensure patient safety. When you request a Pharmacist-Only Medicine such as Voltaren Rapid 25mg, it is incumbent on the pharmacist to ensure your safety. Please don’t be embarassed or annoyed by our questions. For instance if you are taking certain meds for blood pressure like cilazapril, quinapril or losartan, there is additional risk to your kidneys and the decision to use anti-inflammatories must be made (and monitored) by your GP. Pharmacists are the health professional that you see most often AND we are usually available without an appointment unlike most other health professionals in the New Zealand health system.

For good healthy advice and nutritional support see the team of friendly health professionals at Cromwell Pharmacy. We’re here to help. OPEN: Monday-Friday 8.30am - 6pm and Saturday 9.30am - 1.00pm

If in doubt, individuals are advised to discuss their health conditions with their doctor.

Clinic Hours: Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm, with late night appointments on Monday & Thursday until 8pm. Weekend walk in clinics: Please check Cromwell Bulletin for weekend practice location.

Doctors available 8am – 6pm 7 days a week. Phone 03 445 1119 (24 hrs). New enrolments always welcome 192 Waenga Drive, Cromwell

Otago Anniversary 'pawfect' time for a pooch pool party Molyneux Aquatic Centre is gearing up for a pool party this Otago Anniversary Weekend that's set to get tails wagging. The fourth Soggy Doggy Splash event will take place at the centre's outdoor pool on Sunday 24 March from 12pm-2.30pm. The event is a fundraiser for the local SPCA. The event has been held twice in Spring as part of the Alexandra Thyme Festival, and last year was held at the end of the outdoor pool's summer season. Dog owners have raved about these events on behalf of their canine companions. The event will be split into two sessions. Small to medium dogs are first up from noon, followed by medium to large dogs

from 1.30-2.30pm. In between sessions there will be a fundraising sausage sizzle and raffles. Entry is $10 per dog, with all proceeds going to the SPCA.

CALLING ALL COMMUNITY GROUPS! Cromwell, Otago – All community groups from Cromwell and Districts are invited to participate in the first-ever Greenway Festival on Sunday, 14 April. “The Greenway Festival is all about having fun as a community, so we are giving community groups the opportunity to showcase what they’re all about, and to host a fun activity alongside their exhibition,” says Susan Curran, Co-Manager of Connect Cromwell. Many community groups have already stepped up to the plate. The Life Education Trust will be there with Harold the Giraffe, and kids can enjoy a ride on Thomas the Tank Engine courtesy of The Lions. They will also be handling the free sausage sizzle. The day promises to have something for everyone. Visitors can look forward to performances by the Fine Thyme Singers and the Fine Thyme Belles, a demonstration by The Gate Marchers, high-jinks with Bobo the Clown, a bungee tramp, stilt walkers, a bouncy castle, a glamping tent, and much more. “We want everyone to come out and enjoy this celebration of community with us,” says Cathy Williams, Co-Manager of Connect Cromwell. The day’s activities will start at 9 am with a Community Brainstorm, facilitated by Cissy Rock, where everyone is invited to join in identifying and discussing ideas for community projects going forward. The festival itself will run from 11 to 4 and will feature the official launch of the Community-Led Development Programme in Cromwell and Districts at noon. If you are part of a community group who would like to be involved in the Greenway Festival, please contact Susan Curran or Cathy Williams at info@connectcromwell.nz.

Central Otago SPCA Coordinator Shirlene Steel said the invite would go out to the "puparazzi" and local news hounds, so dogs were welcome to wear their Sunday best collars or fancy dress should they (or their owners) wish! Organisers have set a maximum number of dogs per session at 50. Participants are asked to get along to Molyneux Aquatic Centre 2030 minutes before each session to register on the day. A registration tent will be set up by the back gate to the pool facility. The event is for neutered dogs only. Puppies under the age of 6 months that haven't been neutered can come to the small to medium dogs session.

Cromwell Community Patrol and Neighbourhood Support Cromwell Cromwell Community Patrol

Working together to help keep our community safe Neighbourhood Support Cromwell

Editorial and photo supplied

Following the horror of the terrorist act in Christchurch, some may be wondering – could it happen in our community? Keeping a safe community must be constantly worked at and we must not be complacent. Cromwell Community Patrol and Neighbourhood Support are two organisations that are constantly working to keep our community safe. Last year our patrol drove for 6720 kms. The 26 patrol members did 924 hours of patrol and other tasks. Our Neighbourhood

Support organisation encourages citizens to participate in neighbourhood support to reduce crime, and address antisocial and unacceptable behaviour in our community. Community support is essential. Pub Charities have given Neighbourhood Support a grant towards purchasing a replacement computer. Summerlands provides the fuel for the community patrol vehicle and AMI insures it for free. Hawkdun Motors, the Central Lakes Trust

and other businesses helped to buy the patrol vehicle. Cromwell BP workshop has provided free servicing of the vehicle and any other parts at cost. The Bulletin enables us to communicate messages about keeping safe. Other businesses and organisations also support us. We work together as a community and will not be complacent about our community’s level of safety.

Entries open for Central Otago Awards Entries for the 2019 Central Otago Awards are now open. The Central Otago Awards are presented biennially to businesses and individuals that are achieving great things and that exemplify the spirit of the region. Award categories include Business Excellence, Young Professional, Community Service, Apprentice and Youth. This year it’s much easier and less time consuming to enter the Business Excellence Award category. The process includes a short entry form and an opportunity for business owners to meet with the business judging panel to talk about what makes their business outstanding. Regional Identity Manager Shirley Howden says the awards are about “honouring excellence, innovation, big

hearts and the amazing contribution many make to our region”. Ms Howden is encouraging the community to get involved by nominating someone for the business excellence, young professional, community service and youth awards. “I think a good way to go about nominating someone, is to get a few people together and do it as a group so that you can capture this person’s amazing contribution from different angles; it also gives the judges a much better sense of what that person has achieved as well.” Businesses can also be nominated this year. “Typically businesses don't like to 'blow their own trumpet' and enter themselves for an award. So this year we're giving people the opportunity to

nominate a business that is achieving great things in our region, to encourage them to enter the Business Excellence Award category.” “Anyone can nominate a business – employees, friends, family and customers. Once we receive a nomination we will contact the business, send them an entry form and invite them to enter,” says Ms Howden. Entries for this year’s awards close at 5pm, Thursday 2 May. For more information, including entry forms, visit www.centralotagoawards. co.nz. If you have any queries please contact Shirley Howden on (03) 440 0624 or email centralotagoawards@ codc.govt.nz.

SPORTS ROUNDUP CROMWELL RUGBY CLUB Cromwell Rugby Club finished their pre-season last Saturday with The Crom Trans Cavaliers travelling to Dunedin and BWC Cromwell travelling to Kaitangata. Crom Trans Cavaliers played their game on Saturday against Alamabra/Union Prem 2's, and had a loss 24-17.This was a true game of two halves where Alambra/Union started the game strongly and went out to a good lead. Crom Trans Cavaliers were playing well but were rushing and making mistakes and Alambra/Union made them pay for these mistakes, but Crom Trans Cavaliers did score a try to James Rickard to make the half time score was 17-5. After the half time talk from coaches Paul Tait and Jason Clark Crom Trans Cavaliers started to play their game and controlled the ball well, and although Alambra Union did score another try Crom Trans Cavaliers finished strongly to score 2 more tries to Mike Sullivan and Corey Blakeborough. In the forwards Jerry Salu, Mike Sullivan, played well and in the backs Hayden King, Jaryne Reid played well, with Theo Frilan getting Player Of The Day, for a great game on the wing. BWC Cromwell played their game on Sunday and had a great win 33-28 to win back the Paul Tye Memorial over Cresent. These 2 teams are very close and play the same style keeping the ball alive at all times. This lead to both teams scoring try for try,to make the score 14 all, with Dane Edge scoring both of BWC Cromwell's tries and converting them. Then Hayden Todd scored the first of his tries to make the score 19-14 at half time. The second half started like the first with both teams attacking and defending well, but it was BWC Cromwell who scored first in the second half with Hayden scoring his second, which Dane converted to make the score 26-14, which proved crucial to the winning of the game.Cresent then came back into the game with a try to close the gap, but soon after Hayden scored his 3rd try to complete his hat-trick which again Dane converted. Cresent then scored again to make the score 33-28, which made for a tense last 5-10 minutes, but BWC Cromwell held on for the win. Players to stand out were hooker David Martin, props Isileli Prescott, Matiu Mahia in the forwards, and Hayden and Dane in the backs along with Tom Dougerty who was named Player Of The Day, for a strong game at 2nd 5. Thanks so much for all the supporters who travelled to support both teams over the weekend. The competition starts this weekend with Crom Trans Caviliers taking on a good Alexandra side in Alexandra, and BWC Cromwell taking on last years champions Upper Clutha at Andersons Park in Cromwell, with both games kicking off at 2.30pm. Would be great to get support for both teams. CENTRAL FITNESS AND CROMWELL SWIM CENTRE ARE TEAMING UP. We want to offer you a special dual membership at a discounted rate. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Moore, Euan. 26/06/1943 – 07/03/2019 Kaye and family would like to thank all those who helped and supported us through this last difficult year. Dr Brendon Pauley and Medical Centre Staff, The Hospice Team, Caregivers, friends old and new and kind and considerate neighbours. To Euan’s mate Andy Middendorf your consistent visits through all stages of his illness brought him great comfort. Thank you everyone who sent cards, turned up with food and attended his memorial service, he would have been surprised at the numbers, although we weren’t. Thank you all. Kaye, Eric, Andrew and families

THANK YOU Cromwell Volunteer Fire Brigade For those of you who gave up time to help host this event, thanks very much. It was a combined effort to get it ready and the Brigade pulled together as a team. Thank you once again. A lot of work was done behind the scenes, so in saying that, thanks Rowan Dunet and Gill Stace, awesome amount of work both of you put in. The brigade is lucky to have members such as yourselves. To the Challenge Team, hard training does pay off so look out Nationals. No one could have foreseen a hate crime on this magnitude within New Zealand shores, and it was the right decision from FENZ and the UFBA to cancel the challenge on short notice. Whether we put our hands up to do it again is a Brigade decision, so who knows, next year we may be able to pull it together again? I consider myself lucky to be part of a well-trained organization within FENZ and of the Cromwell Volunteer Fire Brigade Thanks. Dave Bolch
