Run by NZ’s leading firefighter’s advocacy and support organisation, the United Fire Brigades’ Association (UFBA) and supported by volunteers, this is their most physically demanding competition (like a firefighter’s ‘Iron Man’!). Wearing full bunker gear and breathing apparatus set, competitor’s race against each other and the clock in a series of tasks designed to simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting.

The five tasks include: 1. Climbing a 6 storey tower carrying a length of 19kg flaked hose 2. Hoisting a 70mm hose coil 6 storeys 3. Chopping using a 4kg shot hammer to drive a beam 1.5 metres 4. Extending a charged (full of water) length of 45mm hose to knock down a disc 5. Dragging a life sized 85kg dummy a distance of 30.5m

Bring the family to support the 150 firefighters from across the South Island attempting to win this challenge. Cromwell residents - come and cheer on our own community superstars; QFF Rowan Dunnet, QFF Mike Ley, QFF Tom Gillespie, QFF Kris King, QFF Joe Vincent, FF Fliss Matherson, FF Gary Croy, FF Jenna Jones, FF Daniel Anderson, FF Andrew Bradford, FF Kalem Blackley and FF Sam Earle. Kirsten Adams is excited to launch the Fuzion Travel brand into Cromwell. Kirsten has many years of experience working in the Travel and Tourism industry the majority of which was in Australasia’s largest Travel Retailer Since moving to Cromwell four years ago, Kirsten has been working in Human Resources Management in the Tourism & Retail industries in Queenstown and Cromwell until the opportunity came up to open her own business under Fuzion Travel. Fuzion Travel is a co-op member of Worldtravellers, New Zealand's fastest growing Kiwi owned travel cooperative and is TAANZ Bonded Kirsten says that Cromwell is a great place to book travel with a number of experienced and knowledgeable Travel Brokers working in the area. Working with a broker or agent saves customers on time and money. “We are all able to access very similar pricing and deals including those you find online and are also able to put together airfares and other products that are not available directly to the consumers. Having an agent or broker working on your travel means that you have got someone to go to when things go wrong such as flight delays or cancellations. Some of Kirsten’s own travel highlights have included living and schooling in Germany on an exchange, living & working in London, backpacking through 32 states of America, cruising the South Pacific, Christmasing in North Africa and Euro-railing throughout Europe to name a few. Whilst Kirsten enjoys exploring other countries, she also loves living in and being part of the Cromwell community alongside her son Mason (7), husband Malcolm and extended Whitworth & Wilson families. Kirsten says she would be excited to be part of your travel planning and welcomes any enquiries and referrals. Kirsten is available to clients via email or phone or can come and meet with you in your home or alongside a coffee at a local café. kirsten.adams@fuziontravel.co.nz 0277227781 https://www.worldtravellers.co.nz/stores/store/expert/kirstenadams-cromwell/213558/ https://www.facebook.com/pg/KirstenAdamsFuzionTravel

Medication Safety & Medication Record Good communication between patients and health professionals helps to reduce the risk of any medication-related harm. Particularly when a patient moves to or from a new GP, is transferred between hospitals or back to the community, or medications are being changed often. Pharmac is responsible for many changes of medication brands during which we are careful to tell you that a visual change has taken place. Consider asking these FIVE questions next time you visit your GP for regular medications: 1. CHANGES? Have any medications been added, stopped or changed and why? 2. CONTINUE? What medications do I need to keep taking and why? 3. PROPER USE? How do I take my medications and for how long? 4. MONITOR? How will I know if my medication is working and what side effects do I watch for? 5. FOLLOW-UP? Do I need any tests and when do I book my next visit? Patients can ask these questions whenever they see a health professional, for example: - - - -

At a doctor’s appointment (GP or specialist); When seeing a practice nurse or nurse practitioner; On discharge from hospital; or When interacting with pharmacists, dentists or midwives.

Finally, we strongly recommend you keep an important document in your wallet or purse called your Medication Record. It should list all the current medicines that you take, along with strength, dose, instructions and what they look like. The physical description of a pill or tablet is essential, so that you can identify all of your own medications, even if they are packed in a blisterpack. Ask the pharmacist to give you a print-out of your current medication list every time it changes. Keep it up to date, and keep it in an accessible place, ready to take to each appointment that you make.

For good healthy advice and nutritional support see the team of friendly health professionals at Cromwell Pharmacy. We’re here to help. OPEN: Monday-Friday 8.30am - 6pm and Saturday 9.30am - 1.00pm

LETTERS

TO THE

EDITOR

CROMWELL CULTURAL CENTRE TRUST Congratulations to the initiators of the Cromwell Community Centre Trust. For almost two decades now any action to provide Cromwell with an up to date purpose built Cultural Centre has been stymied by political egos. It is time for politicians to bow out from the scene and hand the project to those who will ensure the facility is completed in a timely and cost effective basis. Cromwell has an increasing need for such an asset with a forecast significant increase in our population within the next decade. This is not to denigrate the efforts of the whole Cromwell community almost 60 years ago who wholeheartedly got behind the development of the current Memorial Hall. We need the whole Cromwell community to once again endorse the establishment of the new Cultural Centre just as happened all those years ago. A brand new Cultural centre will be a lasting tribute to those who gave their lives in both world wars and the RSA will have a much more appropriate venue for their meetings. Fellow Cromwell residents the time has come to stand up and support the development of a brand new, purpose built, Cultural Centre. Helen and Bill Dunbar

COMMUNITY UPDATE with Shirley Calvert

Meetings and Agendas People are often surprised at the length of time it takes and difficulty in, getting an item placed on a Community Board or Council agenda. There are some very good reasons though, why this is so. For starters, Community Boards and Council are scheduled to meet about every four to six weeks. So, if an item just misses getting on the agenda at one meeting it will be probably another six weeks before there is another opportunity. Secondly, if the elected members are to discuss and debate an item – which is usually the case, then reports need to be written so that they have all the relevant information in front of them. This needs to be done by Council staff, which is then presented to the elected members at their meeting for discussion and debate. Sometimes there will be recommendations in the report for the members to either accept, modify or decline. A third reason is that agendas can get quite full, and there may not be time for further items. Many of the items on our agendas are statutory requirements that must be brought to the members in a timely manner. I was pleased to be contacted last week before the Council meeting (27 Feb) by two members of the public who had read, at least part of, the agendas for the meetings. They were both interested in the Community Services Meeting. One person was interested in the Report from Colliers who manage the LINZ land and were reporting on Freedom Camping, Lake Dunstan Facilities Management and Extra mowing. The second person was interested in the Lake Dunstan Marine Patrol Report. If you are interested in either Council or Community Board agendas it is a pretty simple keyboard exercise (when you know how). 1. Go onto the CODC website – www.codc.govt.nz or just type codc into your search engine and it will be an option. 2. The CODC website front page has a series of green boxes on the right-hand side. Choose the second box “Find It” 3. A drop down list will give you further options. Choose the first one “A-Z Services”. 4. Choose the first option under “A” - “Agendas and Minutes”. 5. The agendas and minutes are listed with the most recent meeting first. You will see that immediately under the Council agenda, there are five further meetings. This can be quite confusing if you are not familiar with Council ways. On Council days there are actually six meetings – five Committee meetings as well as Council . They usually begin with the Community Services Committee meeting followed by Three Waters, Waste and Property, Roading, Planning and Environment and then finally the Council Meeting. The meeting usually last most of the day. An approximate time schedule is available just prior to the meetings.

SPORTS ROUNDUP CROMWELL RUGBY CLUB Cromwell Rugby Club had their first hit out of the season in Dunedin against Kaikorai. This turned out to be one sided affair with Kaikorai completely dominating the game. They are a big physical side and were dominant in scrums and lineouts and starved Cromwell of the ball, and ran in some great tries, with fantastic support play. Cromwell did what they could in defence, but kept running out of defenders. Cromwell did have some periods on attack, and put some pressure on Kaikorai, which lead to Cromwell’s only try of the game to Hayden King, and did not give up, but in the end we were outplayed by a very good team. Again thanks to our amazing supporters who travelled down to support us. The next Pre-Season games are in Cromwell this weekend 9th March, with the Crom Trans Cavaliers taking on the Wanderers from Queenstown at 1.15pm, and BWC Cromwell taking on Eastern, for the Andrew Grubb Memorial, at 2.30pm. So head down to Anderson Park to watch some great rugby.

SPORTS ROUNDUP CROMWELL CRICKET CLUB

PETANQUE CROMWELL

Five Stags Senior Cricketers Finish With a Bang A new-look Senior cricket side took on Blacks Hill on Saturday in the last game of the season. A number of injuries, overseas excursions and other unavailabilities have hampered the club in recent weeks so it was great for club morale to have a win against their bogey team. 6 of the Carrick Station Reserves team competently made the step up to Senior level as Cromwell won the toss and batted first. The batting innings came to life with a couple of crucial partnerships. Andy Ritchie (Sponsored by Henry’s) carried the home side with a mature and accomplished innings of 74, judging when to counter-attack and accumulate with consummate ease. He stroked 3 sixes and 2 fours in his knock. Ritchie was supported by Campbell Morton (17) in a partnership of 49 runs for the 3rd wicket, and later Mark Knox (21) in a stand of 70 for the 5th wicket. Eventually Cromwell made 164, being bowled out inside the last over. This was a score that would require a top order batsman to make at least 70 so by no means was it going to be a walk in the park. The bowling and fielding innings from the home side was extremely clinical. Ritender Mahaal and Ritchie carried on their good bowling form, creating chances almost every over of their opening spells with the seed. Tim Rhoades (Sponsored by Cookie Time Central Otago) took a ripper of a catch in the gully to get things going for Cromwell. Ritchie carried on with his superb day with a 3 wicket haul for 31 off his eight overs on-the-trot performance. He swung the ball as though he was bowling with a boomerang, drawing mistakes from the Blacks Hill batsmen. After Mahaal’s first 5 overs went for just 13 runs (1-24 off his 8), Mark Knox (sponsored by Finance NZ) backed up Mahaal with his most destructive spell of the season. By the end of his first over, Knox had 2 wickets in the hut. This included a sharp catch by Sukhdev Sandhu (Southern Landmarx) in the slips as Cromwell went in for the kill. Knox finished with 4-19 off his eight overs and was ably assisted by spinner Sandhu, who again proved his worth with another 2 wickets for 6 runs. Blacks Hill were eventually bowled out for 106, giving Cromwell a 58 run winning margin. The bowling performance was certainly one of the better ones this season, congratulations to the bowlers for a dominant display. Andy Ritchie had a day out to remember and was rightly the game’s MVP. 74 runs and 3 wickets is a fair haul. Result Cromwell 164 (A Ritchie 74) beat Blacks Hill 106 (M Knox 4-19, A Ritchie 3-31) by 58 runs

Molyneux Park cricket block upgrade scheduled for early 2020 Central Otago District Council and New Zealand Cricket have announced that the cricket block upgrade at Alexandra’s Molyneux Park will be programmed for early 2020. Council Parks and Recreation Manager Gordon Bailey said the timing of the upgrade would “allow more time to carefully assess the requirements for the upgrade, which is likely to involve a full cricket block rebuild plus the proposed addition of an additional cricket strip”. “Undertaking this work early next year will also mean it won’t impact on the rugby season and fits better with other users of the ground.” New Zealand Cricket is working with the Council on the upgrade programme, which will build on other recent investments including the $150,000 upgrade to the stadium’s changing facilities to improve and future-proof the venue. New Zealand Cricket Head of Turf Management Ian McKendry said Molyneux Park had a long and successful history of hosting first-class cricket. “NZC recognises that and supports the Council’s proposed upgrade programme,” he said. “We look forward to working together to develop a cricket block that’s conducive to good, entertaining cricket.”

The College News Our Year 10 students have returned from an enjoyable 4 days at Kidds Bush, Lake Hawea. The mix of water based activities, the walk to Sawyerburn Hut, their challenge day and camping and mixing with classmates makes the camp a real highlight for many. Year 7 students are based at our Aquatic Centre this week sailing, kayaking, raft building completing initiative activities and team building. It was a beautiful day on Monday when I popped down with lots of happy involved students making the most of their experience. Project PIE, Participation, Inclusion and Enthusiasm was launched with an entertaining video by our Year 13 students earlier this term. Each year our Year 13 students aim to develop their leadership by giving something back to their school and making a difference for their peers. Many are already doing this as prefects, house leaders, peer support leaders and class tutors. Their goal this year is to build school pride and belonging through activities that will enthusiastically involve the whole school. We have had athletics, Tug o War, dodgeball and this week it is inter-house chess. The ERO team of Murray South, Tess Livingstone and Juliette Hayes completed

their review with an initial findings report back to our Board. They have acknowledged many strengths in culture of teaching, learning and wellbeing in our school as well as providing some areas of future focus. Their full report should be available to our community in the next month. He rawe to Pisa on their Athletics Day inter-house win with Clutha a very close second. Project PIE was certainly to the fore during the day with students from Year 7 to 13 entering into the spirit of involvement and competition. Congratulations to Grace Tiko on equalling the high jump record and Josh Munro on breaking the high jump record for their respective age groups. A huge mihi (thank you) to Karen Gallagher for organising the Wednesday morning fitness club for Year 7 and 8 students. Around 50 keen participants are turning up at 7.15am to enjoy the physical challenges, the camaraderie and the kai. Our rowing team is heading to Lake Ruataniwha for the South Island Secondary Schools regatta starting this Friday. Several of the team competed in the New Zealand Open Championships with the highlight being a Bronze Medal in the novice Quad of Matthew King,

Jack Spriggs and coxswain Willa Sonntag along with two Twizel students. Ka mau te wehi to the mixed triathlon team of Kamryn Reddy, Eve Drinnan and Lachlann MacTaggart on their 2nd placing in the U16 mixed teams event at the South Island Championships last weekend. Ngā mihi nui to Jake Cirolli and Myah Scott who have been selected as our Head Boy and Head Girl for 2019. Our Prefect team is already well underway with their leadership mahi and we are excited for the difference they will make in our school through their example, care, initiative and enthusiasm. We wish Myah, Jake and Prefects Cesca Anderson, Emma Deaker, Liam Grant, Millie Ryan, Enzo Shaw and Monty Saunders all the best for this year. On Friday 8 March we have a Māori and Pasifika whānau picnic in the outdoor area at Cromwell Primary School from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. It will be a relaxed time where families can bring kai, listen to some waiata and haka and make connections with other whānau in Cromwell. Mason Stretch Principal
