Thanks to that wicked frost last October, my February fruit tree harvest was: 3 apricot trees produced 1 apricot, 1 peacherine produced 12 fruit and 1 blackboy peach still has about 50 ripening peaches on it. The heritage Worcester Pearmain apple tree however was laden with fruit. No apricot sauce or jam this year, but also no slaving over a hot stove when it was 30 degrees outside!!

Members have been emailed the schedule for our March and April events and we have our AGM on the 8th May at the Golf Clubrooms. Fifty percent of our long serving Committee members are retiring from the Committee this year so there is a wonderful opportunity for other members to step up, meet some new people, and keep the Club running. If re-elected, our Treasurer and Secretary are willing to stay on in those positions, but we will need a President and Vice-President as well as new Committee members. If you would like to have a chat about standing but not sure what is involved, then please don’t hesitate to ring either Julene Anderson (President) 445 4771 or Mel Wilson (Secretary) 021 2330280.

Simon Webb was a wonderful host to members for our February visit to Webb’s Orchard, where he discussed how his commercial orchard handled that late season frost. We had a tour of the packing shed followed by a viewing of their most recent plantings of peaches, and Simon kindly answered all our questions about fruit trees, including choosing the different varieties to grow, watering, spraying, diseases, harvesting and pruning.

Medication Classification System in NZ What is an OTC medicine? Well, OTC stands for “over the counter”. These are medicines that are NOT prescription medicines and are NOT complementary medicines. They can be supplied as: - General Sales medicines (freely available from groceries and garages as well as pharmacies); - Pharmacy Medicines (available from a pharmacy without a prescription); or - Pharmacist-Only Medicines (available from a pharmacist without a prescription). Take paracetamol for example. Paracetamol in its 500mg tablet form is available from the corner dairy as long as it’s in a 20-tablet pack or smaller (General Sale). Paracetamol liquid for kiddies can only be sold from a pharmacy (Pharmacy Medicine) so that correct information can be given about how much to take, and what strength to use. But ... paracetamol in its 665mg slow-release formulation (Panadol Osteo) is now a Pharmacist-Only Medicine. This change occurred recently as a direct consequence of reports to Medsafe where consumers have taken too many paracetamol per day and their liver has got into strife. Panadol Osteo 665mg can be taken at a maximum daily level of SIX, whereas regular paracetamol 500mg has a maximum daily level of EIGHT. Hence there is a potential for confusion and accidental overdose. There is also the risk of heightened toxicity during intentional overdose, as the paracetamol is released slowly over an eight hour period, to give a more sustained effect. Paracetamol poisoning is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the developed world. A direct quote from Medsafe regarding the recent reclassification of Panadol Osteo to Pharmacist-Only Medicine: “Advice on the correct dosing by a pharmacist at the point-of-sale may help to reduce inadvertent supratherapeutic doses with modifiedrelease paracetamol 665 mg tablets.” Next week I am going to expand on this mini-lecture using diclofenac as an example which has a foot in every classification camp so to speak!

Sir/Madam Can the Queenstown Trail Trust please explain to the people of Cromwell/Bannockburn, through the Bulletin, their intentions and plans to build a cycle trail bridge up-stream from the existing Bannockburn Bridge over the Kawarau Arm of Lake Dunstan? It would be of interest to know the cost and height of suspension towers . Why has the existing Bannockburn Bridge not been considered, or a cheeper ‘clip-on’? Murray Jones Bannockburn

Employment Agreements – Worth it or she’ll be right? Being a business owner is hard, there are a million things to think about on top of actually doing the work that pays the bills. Often this balancing act means you will need to start employing staff to ease the load. By employing someone there are minimum rights that the employee has and responsibilities that the employer has which must be dealt with appropriately by way of a correctly drafted employment agreement. As an employer you are legally required; • to provide your employee with an employment agreement, • advise them that they are entitled to receive independent advice, • give them a reasonable opportunity to seek that advice, • consider any issues that the employee raises and respond to them. If you are a small business taking on a new employee you are likely to want to use the 90 day trial provision which allows you to dismiss a new employee within 90 days during which they cannot bring a claim of unjustified dismissal. This trial period can only be utilised if; 1. It is properly documented in an employment agreement, 2. The employment agreement is provided in accordance with the procedure I have outlined above, 3. The employment agreement is signed and returned prior to the employee starting work. If this exact procedure is not followed then the trial period becomes null and any attempt to remove the employee under the provision could bring a claim of unjustified dismissal. If you are thinking about employing staff or have staff that do not have current employment agreements make sure you get the right advice from the start. Feel free to call me to make an appointment on (03) 445 4111 or e-mail me at alice.sanders@awslegal.com.

CROMWELL RUGBY CLUB The Cromwell Rugby Club hosted to two games last Saturday, The Wanderers from Queenstown and Eastern from Waikouaiti. The first game was the Cromtrans Cavaliers playing the Wanderers and having a good win 17-12. This was the first hit out for both of these teams this season, and was an even game, with both teams attacking and defending well. It was the Cromtrans Cavaliers that started to get their combinations going well and scored the first try to Number 8 Jackson Clark. Then after a period of good attack from Cromtrans Cavaliers, centre Charlie Tiko scored another try, which Hayden King converted to make the score 12-0. The Wanderers then started to get a bit more ball and while the Cromtrans Cavaliers defended well they managed to get a try to make the score 12-7 at half time. The second half was much like the first with both team having chances, and it was the Cromtrans Cavaliers that scored their 3rd try to prop Sam Struthers to make the score 17-7.The Wanderers then scored another try, but the Cromtrans Cavaliers held on well to take the win. Players to stand out were Jackson Clark, Hayden King, Scott Wills, and Jerry Salu was named Player Of The Day. The second game was BWC Cromwell taking on Eastern for the Andrew Grubb Memorial trophy, and had a very good win 68-15. This is a trophy that is cherished by both clubs, and is always an intense game. The game started with both teams having periods with the ball and feeling each other out, and it was BWC Cromwell that scored first with Jack Ryan getting the first of his 2 tries. Then BWC Cromwell started to take control of the game and ran in some more great tries, to Warrick Cheney, Ollie James, Dewet Nortje, Seru Asivorosi. The best of these tries was Seru’s where the ball was passed several times with great off loads for Seru to finish. Dane Edge converted all these tries. Eastern did come back into the game late in first half to get 2 tries to make the halftime score 35-10. The second was again dominated by BWC Cromwell running in another 5 tries, with 2 to Tom Docherty, Jack Ryan scoring his second, and Theo Guillavme Valy and Dylan Robinson rounding out the tries. Dane kicked another 4 conversions to kick 9 from 10 for the game. Eastern never gave up and tested BWC at times to score another try, but BWC Cromwell always had the game under control, and is great to retain the Andrew Grubb Memorial. The whole squad contributed to this win with Danny Russell, Stefan Blakeborough, Jack Ryan, Tom Docherty playing well, and Player Of The Day went to Dane Edge who had a great game at halfback. Thanks to everyone who turned up to watch the game, and especially the girls who helped out is the kitchen. This week both teams are away for the final pre-season, with Cromtrans Cavaliers travelling to Dunedin on Saturday to play Alhambra/ Union Prem 2’s and BWC Cromwell travelling to Kaitangata on Sunday to play Crescent for the Paul Tye Memorial Trophy. CROMWELL ADULT FOOTBALL OFF TO A FLYING START Cromwell’s first ever adult soccer team had its first game against a strong Wanaka team stacked with a few stand out veteran players pulled in to beef up their team. Conditions were perfect at the Wanaka recreation grounds and this brought out a huge crowd supporting both teams. Cromwell kicked off and it was not long before Eddie was having a crack on goal but pulled his shot wide. There was some great link up play between Flynn, Eddie and John which caused problems for the Wanaka backs, but still we were unable to get any shots on target. Wanaka started to get a foothold on the match and was awarded with a goal after a lovely cross and a header that left goalie Hamish with no chance; 1-0 Wanaka and time to regroup at half time. The second half started with a great blocking save from Hamish. Some great movement and a cross from Johnny saw Butchy knocking the ball over the line to even things up and score Cromwell’s first ever goal, history made. Flynn was making his mark on the biggest and most experienced guy on the pitch; the big fellow could not handle him and hobbled off mid-way through the first half which proved pivotal to their structured defence. Wanaka slotted in a goal after a nice move down the left and a low shot beating Hamish at the far post; 2-1 Wanaka. Some fumbling defending and persistence from Robinson resulted in a Cromwell penalty that John dispatched into the back of the net; 2-2. Flynn was replaced by another one of our Vanny boys, Big John, who was not to be messed with in midfield. Cromwell was now well on top and winning all 50/50 balls and the game was now firing up into a good challenge.

With only minutes to go Wanaka was awarded a very dubious penalty which was fired into the back of the net to level things up at 3-3. One final attack saw Eddie the eagle denied by a brilliant save and Cromwell’s first competitive game ending in a draw. You boys did Cromwell proud and we look forward to the first home game in Cromwell next Saturday, 12:45pm at the Alpha Street Reserve. Let’s get behind the Cromwell team and bring along your family and friends on Saturday to cheer our boys on. Cromwell Community Patrol and Neighbourhood Support Cromwell Cromwell Community Patrol

Working together to help keep our community safe Neighbourhood Support Cromwell

Editorial and photo supplied

Neighbourhood Support NZ and the online site Neighbourly are promoting Neighbours Day Aotearoa. Neighbours are encouraged to come together anytime over 10 days from March 22-31. Knowing your neighbours is recognised as being important in times of emergency or disaster, and it also contributes to the health and wellbeing of the members of a community. Knowing your neighbours doesn’t mean that they are necessarily your best friends – or that you agree with their values and opinions. It can simply mean that you know their names, greet them in passing, know something about

While it is hoped that neighbours will interact throughout the year, Neighbours Day Aotearoa is a time when a special effort can be made. Some things that can be done are:

• Do a random act of kindness for a neighbour – such as taking them some baking; • Invite a neighbour over for a “cuppa”; • Just greet a neighbour with whom you haven’t often communicated.

• Visit neighbours you haven’t spoken to and introduce yourself; • Share surplus vegetables or vegetable plants with your neighbours; • Host a neighbourhood pot-luck gathering; • Organise a neighbourhood clean-up such as tidying a community area;

Through the neighbourhood support organisation in the Cromwell area, concerns about safety or antisocial behaviour in a neighbourhood can be passed on to the community patrol and the Cromwell police. If you would like to form a neighbourhood support group in your neighbourhood, email the following address. ns.cromwell.nz@gmail.com

them and look to help them if needed.

Lions Tales It’s been a very busy time for Lions since the beginning of the year. Starting with the rather wet Wyndham race meeting, held at the Cromwell racecourse on the first weekend in January and there haven’t been many free weekends since then, as our food caravans have been to 8 events including the following • NZ Summer Championship at Highlands • Classic Car and Hot Rod Show • NZ Speedway Championships • Highlanders v Warratahs at Molyneux Park as well as the Speedway on the same night • Street Sprints We certainly get around and are always happy to assist with events that are being held in and around Cromwell. Just give us a call if you would like either of our food caravans at your next event. This means we have raised significantly more funds for disbursement to worthy causes within the community. We will be assessing how to distribute these funds in May this year and would welcome any applications. You can apply by sending a request to seccromlions@gmail. com, To be eligible for consideration your application must be received by 31st April. Following our meeting to assess the applications, we will let you

know how we turn hotdogs, burgers, chips and drinks into funding for projects that benefit the community.

One of these projects is to facilitate the formation of a Menz Shed, which is currently in the establishment phase. The Menz Shed committee have completed the process to become a registered charity, which has just been confirmed. They are also completing an application to the CODC/Cromwell Community Board seeking approval for land within the Neplusultra reserve to build a shed and are currently approaching the existing neighbours, seeking their support. The Menz Shed committee have been unable to find a shed for temporary accommodation, so if you have one surplus, please let us know. The Menz Shed committee have been approached by a couple of clubs/ societies seeking remedial maintenance assistance. The committee are looking at how they can complete these projects, without a shed and hope to be able to do so, in the near future. Good things take time and they will continue to keep you abreast of their progress towards a Menz Shed in Cromwell. Recently four Lions, headed by Wayne Collie gathered to dismantle the kiln at the Cromwell Pottery Club in Old Cromwell. An hour later and the kiln plus flu were on a trailer ready to be taken to the recycling section, at the local transfer station. One of the four, a

local registered plumber whisked up his ladder and the remaining section of the flu was soon capped off, he then returned the following week to put a ceiling plate inside where the flu had been. The Lions were handsomely rewarded with cream scones and coffee by the kind ladies of the Pottery Club, thankyou very much ladies. A very good project, helping a fellow club in Cromwell. The Cromwell Lions club is turning 50 this year and our jubilee committee have been extremely busy sending out invites and planning for our birthday party on 30th March. Should you have been involved in Lions and for what ever reason we have not contacted you. Please email clc50reg@gmail.com and we will make sure you receive details of our jubilee celebrations, as there are plenty of tall tales and true from the past 50 years to reminisce over. Over the last fifty years, Lions have always maintained a strong financial position, which has allowed us to provide grants averaging $25,000 per year over the past 6 years. Over the last 50 years, Lions estimate that we have given more than one million dollars of funds to assist worthy causes locally, nationally and internationally. A figure that we are very proud of and with your assistance and generosity, we will be able to improve over the next 50 years. Should you be interested in joining Cromwell Lions please contact Glenn Vaughan (President) on 022 0261 239 or Derek Wardell (Membership Chairperson) on 445 4971.
