Highlands and AJ Hackett bring you closer to the action Not content with bringing top-class motor racing action to Central Otago, Highlands has teamed up with AJ Hackett Bungy to introduce a new concept to bring fans even closer to the action.

The AJ Hackett Bungy Van Dash will debut at the Highlands 501 from November 11-12. The 40-seater bus will do laps of the track with high speed cars whizzing past during the lunchtime entertainment at Highlands on the Saturday and Sunday of the Highlands 501 weekend.

While the bus is cruising around the track, some of the drivers in the Highlands 501 will be doing hot laps in the Highlands fleet of sports cars (including a brand new Ferrari 488 GTB) and some of their own race cars so passengers on board the bus can get a feel for how fast these cars really go. Kiwi motorsport superstars and Red Bull global athletes, Shane van Gisbergen and ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett, will also be on board the bus as the tour guides.

WOOL AND KNITTERS REQUIRED FOR OPERATION COVER UP On Friday 17th November ladies and men who are interested in joining others to knit blankets for Operation Cover Up are invited to afternoon tea at the Combined Society of Arts & Crafts rooms, Inniscort Street at 2pm.

Operation Cover Up was established by Mission Without Borders in 2000 and started here by Doreen McKinlay in 2004, to help children living in orphanages in Eastern Europe.

All blankets are guaranteed to reach their destination - the Netherlands where they are transported overland to Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bosnia, Bulgaria and Albania where they are distributed by volunteers for Mission Without Borders.

New Co-Ordinators, Carolina Merrilees and Jill McColl say anyone interested is welcome to come along. The blankets are done in garter stitch which is easy to do. The group use new and second-hand wool and donations are always gratefully received. They also dye wool, a demonstration of which will take place that afternoon. “It’s a great way to combine two of the cornerstones of our business, motorsport and tourism,” says Josie Spillane, Chief Operating Officer at Highlands. “This is a very unique and innovative way to experience the circuit and we’re stoked to have such a strong Kiwi tourism brand on board! AJ Hackett has its bridges and we’ve got our race circuit; it’s what we do with them and the experiences we offer that makes us iconic.”

Highlands and AJ Hackett Bungy will run competitions on their Facebook pages with ten seats on the bus up for grabs, along with free entry to the Highlands 101 on the Saturday or Sunday.

The other seats will be filled at random at the event. Anyone

wearing Highlands or AJ Hackett merchandise is in with a chance of being selected from the crowd.

A similar concept is popular at the Nissan NISMO Festival in Japan — where it’s known as the Kamikaze Bus — and it made its debut in Australia at the Sandown 500 earlier this year. This is the first time it will be done in this country, thanks to the support of Motorsport New Zealand.

As well as the chance of a ride in the AJ Hackett Bungy Van Dash,, anyone with a pre-purchased ticket for the Highlands 501 goes in the draw to win a hotlap in the $4.3 million Highlands Vulcan. A lucky fan from the crowd will also get the chance to pull on a helmet and strap into

the passenger seat for the ride of their lives. Also listen out for the commentary on how to win a Fast Lap in the Ferrari during the lunchtime entertainment, or look out for the Highlands staff, who will be giving away tickets.

Make sure to take a walk down pit lane during the weekend, where you can watch the teams work on the cars, and who knows, if they’re not too busy you may even be able to snap a selfie with your favourite driver.

Join in the free grid walk before the main feature races and watch out for the famous Le Mans start before the Highlands 501 on Sunday, a running race featuring drivers more used to sitting behind the wheel than stretching their legs!

As well as the fantastic action on the track, there’s plenty of fun and entertainment right around the circuit. The Highlands Hop On-Hop Off bus will be running all day to ferry spectators around

the circuit, making it easy to check out the different spectator viewing areas or visit the Jurassic Safari Park and adventure playground in the Highlands forest for the kids to explore.

There’s lots of entertainment for the whole family in the RJ’s Twisters Family Fun Zone including a variety of organised games like tug of war, sack racing, egg and spoon races, gumboot throwing and three-legged races.

Plus there’s giant Twister, Jenga and Connect Four games, hulahoops and face painting.

If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a digger driver, you can get behind the controls in the BWC Digger Challenge or if you think you’ve got what it takes to be the next Shane van Gisbergen you can test your skills on the driving simulators in the marquee and set your personal best around the Highlands circuit.

Second Planning Meeting for College Planned Ideas from the community given at a well-attended meeting last term have now been scripted into Cromwell College’s Strategic Plan and it is hoped everyone will return for a follow-up session next week.

College Board of Trustees Chairperson Greg Wilkinson said the school were delighted at the turn-out for the first Strategic Plan meeting in September.

“One great outcome was a new vision statement which we’d been struggling to verbalise ourselves. ‘Best I can be’ was suggested from a couple of groups at the meeting and we have adopted this as our new vision statement. If everybody in

our school community - students, staff, board trustees, school whanau - strives to be the “best I can be” then imagine what we can achieve individually and together.

He said a public meeting on Tuesday, November 14th would report back fully on what had been done with the ideas and submissions from the first meeting and allow discussion about the final draft of the Strategic Plan document.

Board members had carefully reviewed all the feedback, including notes on newsprint sheets from tables as well as ideas shared on the night.

“We considered each idea and submission given and how they fitted into our strategic plan. From this we picked up an additional 4-5 ideas and modified our plan accordingly.

It is important we hear voices from a broad cross-section of our community and round table discussion is the most effective way of communication.”

The school were planning for around 450 students in 2018 and expected that to grow and settle at around 500 within three to five years. Reviewing the Strategic Plan was part of the normal planning processes for the college, he said.

“Our review process is largely completed although we remain open-minded to suggestions, feedback and further discussion at the meeting. The next step is for our principal and the senior leadership team to prepare the Annual Plan for 2018. Once completed, both the Strategic Plan and the Annual Plan will be available from the school and on our website.

Parents and anyone in the community is encouraged to attend the meeting at the school library at 7pm, Tuesday, November 14.

Patient Safety Week runs this week from 5th through to 11th November. The theme this year is about opening lines of communication about your medications.

The more you understand about your own medications, the better you will be at taking them correctly. However what pharmacists think is common sense can sometimes be confusing for you. If at any time you are confused about our advice please speak up. In return, we will not let you go home with a paper bag full of meds you don’t know what to do with.

The key information for us to cover so as not to bamboozle you with too much information are: 1. What is my medicine called?

2. What is it for?

3. How and when do I take it?

Sometimes the shop is busy with other people chatting and laughing, or babies crying, and this can impact on both of our listening abilities. If the shop noise is distracting for you, we can go aside to a quieter area like our private consulting room.

Concentration is key.

Sometimes there is too much information for you to absorb (as well as remembering the doctor’s advice!) Here is where written information leaflets can help to summarise the important bits – we use an independent MedInfo leaflet to back up our verbal advice.

Our policy is to give the leaflet out when a new medicine is started, but if you wish to re-read it, just ask us to print another one.

Our philosophy is that no question is a silly one – you can ask us anything about your meds without fear of feeling foolish. If you get home and forget to ask that particular burning question, just call us on the telephone as pharmacists are always available to take calls from 8.30am to 6pm.

If you are picking up a family members’ medicines, it’s probably easiest for us to speak to him/her on the telephone so that you don’t have to remember oodles of information. But we are happy to work with your preference.

If you just can’t get in because of young children, work or other commitments, we offer a delivery service for just $3, so that you still get what you need, when you need it. Just make sure to tie up any exuberant dogs please!

“Cromwell’s GOLD *N* NOTES Hoedown” November 17th to 19th; (Fri to Sun)

Go Kart Grand Prix at Highlands If you fancy yourself as a bit of a speed demon then you won’t want to miss this competition from Highlands. To celebrate the last visit of the Australian GT series to Highlands, the Cromwell circuit is hosting the first ever Highlands Go Kart Grand Prix this Thursday.

Twelve lucky competition winners will be paired up with a professional driver from the Australian GTs. There will be a Le Mans start (where one of the drivers has to sprint to their kart to start the race), a driver change midway through the race and the opportunity to be crowned the inaugural Highlands Go Kart Grand Prix champion. That’s bragging rights for life, right there!

Winners will also attend the official welcome function for the drivers and teams of the Highlands 501 and receive a free weekend pass to the event.

Highlands Boss Lady, Josie Spillane is excited to be matching the AGT Stars with some of the Cromwell locals, “ So much of what makes Highlands special is the community that we are in. The Highlands Go Kart track is one of the best motorsport experiences in the country. The karts are top quality German-built Rimo machines, capable of speeds of up to 50 km/h. They come as single and two-seater options to suit most ages. The track is 650 metres long and took 672 cubic metres of concrete to construct – that’s 149 truckloads – and it’s edged with a whopping 4,830 tyres!

People can enter on the Highlands website or Facebook, with the competition being drawn Thursday morning.

Young Musical Talents Recognised at College A trio of young talent has been recognised for their contribution to Cromwell College’s successful year on the music scene.

College bands placed second and third in regional competitions in Queenstown and Invercargill, as well as impressing crowds at the school’s public Soiree evening and other performances.

College performing arts co-ordinator, Catherine Forsyth, said the three students, Ash Stanley Suter(18), Logan Bell(16) and Cameron Miller(17)(from left, above) had shown outstanding talent and commitment to their musical studies.

Ash gained first in class and the En Hakkore prize for contribution to college groups, she said. He will attend Auckland University next year to study Contemporary Music.

CROMWELL LIGHT PARTY WELL ATTENDED 250 Children attended the CROMWELL LIGHT PARTY presented by the Combined Churches of Cromwell.

The Cromwell Presbyterian Church was lit up by 250 dressed up children and families on Tuesday night, 31 October 2017 having fun at the Annual LIGHT PARTY - which is a positive alternative to Halloween.

Children had fun doing crafts, playing crazy games and making masks. Outside, there was BBQ food, donut decorating and bouncing castles.

Currently my work is available from Gallery De Novo , The Moray Gallery and Gallery on Blueskin in Dunedin.

My work is inspired by design, shape, colour, the changing seasons, like maps my works are a translation of place and the movement of time and effects on nature.

Star pairing confirmed for Highlands 501

Two of New Zealand motorsport’s biggest names will team up for this weekend’s Highlands 501 in Cromwell. V8 Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen and drifting legend ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett will drive one of Tony Quinn’s two McLarens in the last Australian GT event to be held at the Central Otago track.

The Whiddett and van Gisbergen pairing was selected via an online poll on Highlands Facebook page. Tony Quinn and Highlands resident driving professional, Andrew Waite will race in the other McLaren.

For drift superstar, ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett, it’s another chance to show off his circuit racing skills after an impressive debut at last year’s Hampton Downs 101.

“It’s a dream come true to get back to Highlands and have another crack in a GT car,” says Whiddett. “For me, being a rookie, it will be awesome to spend a weekend with SVG and I’m confident we’ve got the speed to compete with the top guys.”

“I definitely surprised myself last year. I had no idea how I was going to stack up so to qualify the car in the top ten at Hampton Downs and Highlands was a huge confidence boost.

Circuit racing and drifting are two totally different beasts but my drifting experience has certainly helped me adapt quickly to racing. I know how to maintain control of a car when it’s dancing on the edge. When the car does get away from me, it doesn’t scare me or freak me out. That allows me to push it really hard.”

Highlands has been a happy hunting ground for van Gisbergen who won the Highlands 101 in 2015 with Klark Quinn.

“Last year I wasn’t able to race at Highlands because of my schedule,” says van Gisbergen. “‘Mad Mike’ took my place and I did some coaching with him before the event to help him get up to speed. He picked up things so fast and his ability to adapt was very impressive. He drove exceptionally well for someone who’s never done it before and I’m looking forward to seeing how much he’s improved this year.”

Highlands owner, Tony Quinn is hoping to maintain the impressive record of the Quinn family in the race.

“Since the first Highlands 101 in 2013, a Quinn has finished on the podium every year.

It would be great if I could maintain that record this year,” says Quinn. “It would also be nice for Andrew Waite who is the resident professional driver at Highlands and he will have a lot of support from the members and the locals.”

It’s the last time the cars and stars of the Australian GT Championship will race around the Cromwell circuit but the team at Highlands is already looking forward to next year and an event that will celebrate New Zealand motorsport and driving talent.

“It’s been a hell of a journey over the last five years,” says Tony Quinn, the owner of Highlands. “Winning the first Highlands 101 with Fabian Coulthard was pretty cool. After we won I told him I’d give him $5000 if he could lift the trophy. What he didn’t know was the trophy was a big rock with a sword sticking out of it and he hadn’t a hope of lifting it!”

“Winning it Garth Tander the next year was a fluky one but still very special. We were a distant second all day behind Craig Baird and Richard Muscat in the Mercedes-Benz, until they ran out of petrol on the last lap. Shane van Gisbergen and my son Klark won it in 2016 and I was second last year with Greg Murphy.”

“I’m one of the few people in the world who is a circuit owner, event promoter, category owner, sponsor and race car driver and with all of those roles comes different responsibilities.

We’ve had some scary moments. In 2015, a Lamborghini caught fire in the pits and a few laps later an Aston Martin ended up in the forest. Thankfully nobody was injured but it’s always a concern to me during the event, that everybody stays safe and enjoys themselves.”

“I’m very proud of the track, the event and the team at Highlands. We’ve put on a bigger and better event every year and the team punches above it’s weight. We’re committed

to putting on a bigger and better event every year, and the plan for 2018 is for more of the same, except this time with a focus on homegrown New Zealand motorsport talent.”

This year, Highlands has teamed up with AJ Hackett Bungy to introduce a new concept to bring fans even closer to the action. The AJ Hackett Bungy Van Dash will debut at the Highlands 501. While the 40-seater bus is cruising around the track, some of the drivers in the Highlands 501 will be doing hot laps in the Highlands fleet of sports cars — including the brand new Ferrari 488 GTB — so passengers on board the bus can get a feel for how fast these cars really go.

As well as the chance of a ride in the AJ Hackett Bungy Bus, anyone with a prepurchased ticket for the Highlands 501 goes in the draw to win a hotlap in the $4.3 million Highlands Vulcan. A lucky fan from the crowd will also get the chance to pull on a helmet and strap into the passenger seat for the ride of their lives. Also listen out for the commentary on how to win a Fast Lap in the Ferrari, or look out for the Highlands staff, who will be giving away tickets.

The complimentary Highlands Hop-OnHop Off bus will be running all day to ferry spectators around the circuit, making it easy to check out the different spectator viewing areas. You can jump on the bus with your kids to visit the Jurassic Safari Park and adventure playground in the Highlands forest or stop off at pit lane where you can watch the teams work on the cars. Who knows, if they’re not too busy you may even be able to snap a selfie with your favourite driver! You can also join in the free grid walk before the Highlands 501.

There’s lots of entertainment for the whole family in the RJ’s Twisters Family Fun Zone or if you fancy yourself as the next Shane van Gisbergen you can test your skills on the driving simulators in the marquee and set your own personal best around the Highlands circuit.

Volunteering Central team back to full strength Vo l u n t e e r i n g Central is thrilled to welcome their newest member of staff Lucy Shea to the team, which brings their staffing back up to full strength following the departure of Trudy Anderson, who left earlier this year to work for the Department of Conservation.

Lucy will begin focusing her energy within the Alexandra community and joins Gillian White who currently covers Wanaka, Queenstown and Cromwell. “Lucy worked for Diabetes UK for over ten years as Volunteer Development Manager, so has a huge range of skills, knowledge and experience to bring

the role. We have completed her induction and couldn’t be happier about her joining our small team!’ Gillian says.

Moving to Central from the UK with her Kiwi husband and two young girls, Lucy is settling into life here and is pleased to have started working again after a few months off whilst moving to NZ. “I am delighted to take up this key development role in Alexandra and over the next few weeks look forward to meeting and building strong relationships with the various organisations working on the ground. I hope that working together we can continue to develop and promote volunteering in the community and connect more people to exciting opportunities that match their skills and experiences.

Through my work at Diabetes UK, I have witnessed the drive, passion and wealth of experience individuals can bring to an organisation and I now look forward to

working with volunteers and organisations to make a difference in Alexandra.” Lucy says.

Lucy will be based at Alexandra Community House every Tuesday and is available to meet with volunteers and volunteer involving organisations between 9.30am – 1.00pm.

Volunteering Central also continue to travel to Cromwell by appointment and hopes to re-establish regular sessions at the Cromwell Resource Centre in the near future.

A Central Lakes Trust initiative established in 2011, Volunteering Central seeks to raise awareness of volunteering in the Central Otago Lakes District and connects volunteers to organisations that rely on their amazing efforts. Training and support is also available to organisations involving volunteers.
