Eastern Access to Cromwell gets a Makeover Monday night saw a team from Cromwell Rotary and some enthusiastic community members turn out to clear dead plants and unwanted growth from both sides of the access road to Cromwell at the eastern end of the Deadman's Point bridge. Tussocks now have more than a fighting chance of survival. Do stop off and have a look at the clearance next time you are passing. Rotary says a huge THANK YOU to the members of the community who came along to help - and also acknowledges the lovely toots received from many of the motorists and truckies as they drove past during the clean-up. Left: Rotarians and locals get to work at the bridge entrance to Cromwell. including Rotary exchange student Eugenio Monasterio, (white t-shirt) newly arrived from Chile, and studying at Cromwell College this year. Eliminating Hepatitis C in NZ by 2025 New Zealand is one of 194 countries that have signed up to the WHO’s target to eliminate hepatitis C as a public health problem by 2030. However the Hep C Action Aotearoa group has challenged NZ to meet a 2025 target, 5 years earlier and in line with the UK. Hep C is a viral infection (contagious through blood-blood contact) that causes inflammation of the liver, and is the leading cause of liver transplantation. Those most at risk of hepatitis C include those who: - Have injected drugs (even if only once); - Have received a tattoo or body piercing; - Have lived or received medical treatment in SE Asia, China, Eastern Europe or Middle East; - Had a blood transfusion prior to 1992; - Have ever been to prison; or - Were born to a mother living with hep C. About 50,000 New Zealanders have chronic hepatitis C and only half of these people are aware they have the virus. Known as the “silent epidemic”, symptoms may not appear until 20-30 years after infection. It may manifest as tiredness/fatigue, joint pain, loss of apetite, nausea and abdominal pain. Symptoms tend to appear slowly, are vague and non-specific and can often be put down to other things such as “growing old” – brain fog, skin irritations, headache or loss of weight. Pharmac has recently funded newer anti-viral medicines which lead to a cure within 12 weeks in over 95% of cases. These medicines have fewer adverse effects than older treatments, and can be prescribed by GPs, and dispensed at community pharmacies. Early diagnosis through screening and improved treatment regimens have the potential to substantially reduce the incidence of long-term complications, reduce transmission and decrease the stigma of hep C virus infection. Read more at www.hepatitisfoundation.org.nz or ask your local community pharmacists.

$300,000 granted through Trust’s new online application system Central Lakes Trust launches online applications with over $300,000 granted in the first funding round for the 2019 calendar year. Grants Manager, Vicci Lawrence says applicants can now easily track the progress of their application and manage their grant. Otago Goldfield’s Heritage Trust treasurer, Odette Hopgood-Bride, who applied for a grant to enable a region wide review of heritage sites, confirmed the online application process was “really easy.” The grant approved for over $40K will enable the heritage trust to commence a five-year heritage site review. “The goal being to join with other heritage organisations to review heritage sites throughout Central Otago and Southern Lakes and create a comprehensive inventory,” Odette says. “As heritage site assessments are completed, records will be updated with the NZAA (New Zealand Archaeological Authority) and available for all to use,” she says. Preserving our heritage for future generations and identifying new heritage sites is one of our current five key priority areas for Central Lakes Trust, says Chief Executive, Susan Finlay. “This information will not only assist heritage groups but local government, developers, businesses, education providers, historians and other agencies with an interest in heritage,” Odette comments. “We are very excited to be able to get this project underway. While other areas throughout the country performed a national heritage site review in the 80’s, this wasn’t done in our region, and is key to preserving our heritage for future generations.” Other applicants to use the system included Alexandra Toy Library, whom receive a

much-needed boost towards replenishing the toys in their library. The programme has been successfully running for several years. The library is available to all families on a membership basis to borrow toys, rather than buy. “This can be an excellent option as small children go through growth stages relatively quickly and require differing toys for stimulation. Play is a very valuable educational component, says CLT Grants Advisor, Mat Begg, “Much like the Holy Family Catholic School can tell you, as they too have spent many years building up their play spaces to cater for the school roll at 225.” “Extraordinary roll growth has overcrowded play equipment at the school. The new creative play space will include an outdoor stage, fixed percussion instruments along with other fixed and movable structures, Grainne Power, Voluntary Grants Coordinator says. Psychological research has established that there are five fundamental types of human play, commonly referred to as physical play, play with objects, games with rules, symbolic play and pretence or socio-dramatic play. “Stages 1-3 of our project addressed the first three types of play. The creative play space will address the latter two types. We are delighted with the grant from Central Lakes Trust towards its inclusion,” Grainne states. The equipment will be available to the community as a whole outside of school hours. The Snow Farm, a charitable trust and our preeminent and only Nordic Ski area in New Zealand sought funding to replace their old and out-of-date snow groomer. The facility’s reliance on this equipment is critical to be able to maintain operations. Contributing $150,000 themselves, Central Lakes Trust

are contributing 20% at $96,000 to the charitable trust towards the purchase of the new groomer. The facility is widely used by locals and has a strong educational focus running programmes for nine local schools,” says Susan. The farm operates year-round providing heavily discounted rates in the ski season, and bike and walking trails the rest of the year. “The Trust’s annual grants budget is $8.5m and the latest rounds of grants takes the total approved for this financial year to almost $5.9m,” Susan says. Immaculate & Established

Don isn’t one for playing games (unless there’s a ball involved). Having spent a number of years marketing to farmers, he doesn’t have time for any nonsense. He now wants to use this experience to do what’s right for buyers and sellers alike.

Generous living spaces and kitchen, over-sized garage with workshop and easy care garden give this property the advantage over shared accommodation spaces. The 2 bedrooms are of good size and the bathroom is semi ensuite. Viewing is a must to appreciate the property so call to make a time to view or check it out at the Open Homes.
