LAUGHS APLENTY THIS SATURDAY AT LOWBURN Michele A ‘Court and Jeremy Elwood two of New Zealand’s premier stand-up comics are all set for a punchy performance and a whole host of laughs at the Lowburn Hall this Saturday night. Well known on radio and for regular television appearances on 7 Days and The Project, Michele and Jeremy are renowned for their intelligent, irreverent and insightful comedy. Michele’s 2016 Arts on Tour NZ show “Stuff I Forgot To Tell My Daughter” was a huge success locally filling the Tarras Hall. This time its two separate stand up routines. Michelle revels in a round of fast paced, political and topical taunts: not for the faint hearted. There are laughs a-plenty as she focuses on being a woman in a man’s world and the ridiculousness this often entails. There are a few high-profile personages who come in for a roasting that almost certainly will have the audience oohing and aahing but also chortling in what could only be a show of agreement. Jeremy entertains with tales of his travels, also touching on the political and the personal. A natural story teller he will draw you in and have you laughing long and hard. Theatre reviewer, Brigid Rennell, who saw the opening night of their tour which sees them visit twenty seven small towns the length and breadth of New Zealand said “this is a delightful evening’s entertainment. If you are in one of New Zealand’s smaller towns, you should make the effort to get along to it – and bring a group of friends so you can all laugh together.” Editorial and photo supplied

When talking about Alaska we usually think of cruising rather than land based activities. Amber from our Cromwell office was lucky enough to experience another side of Alaska during in August last year. Below is one of the many highlights from the trip! Denali National Park With an early start it was time to leave Fairbanks on Denali Star Alaska Railroad and head to our next destination, Talkeetna. There is something about trains that I like and this one was no exception, travelling in Gold Class which is located on the top deck of the train allowing almost full 360 degree view, comfortable seating, breakfast and dinner was an amazing experience. You can choose to travel through to Anchorage from Fairbanks or to stop off in Denali National Park or Talkeetna. The trip took us approximately eight (8) hours and was worth staying awake for every part as the country changes the further south you travel. Unfortunately, due to a head cold and blocked ears I didn’t get to do a scenic flight around Denali National Park, which from what the rest of the group said was a highlight of their time in Alaska. The flight takes you across the glaciers of the National Park and around Mount McKinley. Instead, I got to spend time with our amazing hosts and got to explore Talkeetna township and look through boutique shops, talking with locals and and purchasing some beautiful handmade jewelry. By the end of my short time in Talkeetna, I had fallen in love with the friendly locals, boutique shops and incredible food. I felt very at home here and didn’t want to leave. It’s places like these that make me excited to travel, explore and share my experiences. This is only a small part of what I got to experience, please feel free to read more online or give me a call! http://www.house-of-travel-otago.com/blog/2018/9/22/alaska

There really is a lot more to Alaska than cruising!

Feedback invited on Draft Central Otago Economic Development Strategy

Editorial and photo supplied

Thanks to Cromwell Rotary and the Otago Motor Trust Club the children attending Cromwell's primary schools, preschools and kindergartens are now more clearly visible when they are out and about around the town. Pictured here is Rotary President Craig Lunn in the playground at Kids First Kindergarten surrounded by some of the children sporting their new fluoro jackets.

The purpose of the strategy is to identify where we can positively influence economic growth over the next five years and improve the economic, social, environmental and cultural well-being of Central Otago.

Central Otago District Council is seeking public feedback on its Draft Central Otago Economic Development Strategy 2018-2023.

The vision is ‘Central Otago is a place of dynamic business, creative innovative talent and where visitors come to experience our distinctive place – A World of Difference’. Below the vision are the pillars required to meet this vision. Pillars provide the foundation for a vision and group objectives into work-streams. The four pillars for this strategy are: • Critical enablers – that ensure the district can grow and prosper through improving connectivity and infrastructure and being business friendly. • Distinctive places – that bring together and support a vibrant mix of activities. This includes developing affordable, accessible and attractive places and committing to protect, repair and enhance the landscape and environment. • Smart adaptation – future focused and flexible behaviour and practices. The key focus of this pillar is to support diversity of age, skills and activities & becoming a smart, progressive and collaborative district • A productive and progressive environment through increasing prosperity equitably across the district and driving the visitor economy. An action plan, that will sit alongside the strategy, will detail how the strategy will be applied, and its success measured and monitored. The 34-page strategy will be open for consultation from Friday 1 February to Friday 1 March.

Central Otago District Council Economic Development Manager Rebecca McElrea said the draft, which builds on the previous strategy, was developed following stakeholder meetings and community workshops, and a review of the national, regional and local environment with particular focus on the challenges Central Otago faces as a district and its response. “The most critical of the key learnings from the last strategy was the need for clarity around Council’s role,” Mrs McElrea said. “This draft strategy has been developed using a model that breaks down Council’s role in the economic development space into those that it ‘controls’, those where is able to ‘influence’, and those where is has an ‘interest’.” Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan said Council was keen to for the community to take this opportunity to have input on the strategy. “Our entire community plays a role, has an interest in and is affected by economic development to varying extents. The whole community has benefitted from the huge response to last year’s 10 year plan consultation and we welcome the same engagement with this draft strategy in order that we, as a Council, can be sure we hear the views right across the community we serve moving forward.” The Draft Central Otago Economic Development Strategy 20182023 is available on Council’s website at www.codc.govt.nz/ consultation and at Council service centres in Alexandra, Cromwell, Roxburgh and Ranfurly. Both written and emailed feedback is invited.

Health Kinesiology & Neurostructual Integration The wonderful Cromwell sunshine and warmth is back again, along with daily watering and, where possible, staying inside during the hottest part of the day. We finished the 2018 year with 2 events, the first was a visit to Carrick Peonies where John gave us a wonderful tour of the commercially grown peonies and explained how and why he grew the varieties which are so prized overseas. Our final visit in December was to Akarua Vineyard where, although it rained a little, we learnt about the watering, pruning and general love and attention the vines receive from the very funny and knowledgable Mark. We then moved inside for some sampling of the Akarua wines, and tasting of the platters supplied by our Committee. Our first event this year is a visit to Webbs orchard on Tuesday February 12th; details will be emailed to members of the time. We are also calling for names of members who wish to go on the day trip to Maple Glen at Wyndham on Saturday 13th April. More details for that trip will also be on the email, and payment will be required at the time of booking. Our AGM is on Tuesday 14th May and we will be looking for people to join the Committee, as well as a President and Vice President. We still have quite a few new members whom we don’t have email addresses for our updates, if you are reading this and are not getting emails from the Garden Club, would you please contact Mel so we can update our list. Emails are sent bcc’d and our membership list is not shared. APPLIED KINESIOLOGY

A Future Without Cigarettes is Brighter and Cleaner Health professionals around New Zealand are working hard on the goal to be Smokefree in Aotearoa in 2025. Smokefree is measured by less than 5% of New Zealanders currently smoking. Research shows that you will be more successful in your quit attempt if you take the support offered at pharmacies, doctors clinics or Quitline. The price of cigarettes continues to rise. So now if you smoke 20 times per day, you sink $750 per month into buying cigarettes. I can think of better things to do with that money! Sometimes it takes lots of tries, but every quit attempt is one day closer to saying “I don’t smoke”. Think about those quit attempts as “practicing” becoming a non-smoker. Once you become a non-smoker, you will add healthy days and years to your life with more energy and vitality. The amazing thing is it only takes 12 hours for the carbon monoxide (commonly known as exhaust fumes) to leave the body after your final cigarette. It’s that effective! A lot of people worry that they will put on weight when they give up smoking. I can understand how this is a big concern. BUT the benefits of quitting smoking are actually far greater than gaining a small amount of weight AND there are many things you can do to counteract it. Like concentrate on the 4 D’s when cravings hit … Distract yourself, Deep breathe, Drink water and Do something else. Not one of these involves eating more food. Pharmacists are trained to give good advice to see you through your next quit attempt. Call on us when you are ready.

For good healthy advice and nutritional support see the team of friendly health professionals at Cromwell Pharmacy. We’re here to help. OPEN: Monday-Friday 8.30am - 6pm and Saturday 9.30am - 1.00pm

If in doubt, individuals are advised to discuss their health conditions with their doctor.

US Schoolboy winner of 2019 New Zeal With a wide smile and quoting Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ‘Terminator’ character’s famous “I’ll be back”, US Sprintcar phenomenon Buddy Kofoid says he is already working on ways to return to defend the Civil Construction 2019 New Zealand Sprintcar Title he won so convincingly on Saturday night

at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway that die-hard supporters of Kiwi drivers were left wide-eyed and lost for words. What’s more, after just a month in the country where he made the Deep South, and especially Te Anau his home and Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway on the outskirts

of Cromwell his home track, Buddy says that with his temporary New Zealander status he’s more than happy for South Islanders to claim his win as their win. And will the coveted 1NZ be on his sprintcar stateside? That’s a given, says Buddy who flew out of Queenstown for San Francisco via Sydney on Monday, clutching the Civil Construction 2019 NZ Title Cup, the 2019 Sprintcar GP Cup and Ruapuna Speedway’s prestigious annual Gold Cup. Not bad for a month’s work. He can also add to his bulging career achievement book, Ruapuna’s 15 lap race record and a new 13.18 second track record for Central Motor Speedway set on lap three of the 25 lap Title final, a feat that in itself would normally rate headlines. As much as the Title became the Buddy Kofoid Show, the young man himself has no hesitation in saying how impressed he is with the calibre of New Zealand drivers, more so considering that his season can be 70 to 80 meetings compared with maybe 20 tops for New Zealand drivers. So with his first sprintcar win at just 11 and although only turned 17 at the beginning of December, Buddy was in fact among the more experienced drivers scorching the Central Otago clay on Friday and Saturday nights.

land Sprintcar Title says “I’ll be back” Michael Pickens, who in the heats gave pause for thought about Buddy’s chances but came up short in the 25 lap title, will now have to paint 3NZ over 2NZ. What do they say about bridesmaids? Other track performances to whip up crowd frenzy came from Jamie McDonald (71a) who during a Saturday night heat set a new, albeit short-lived track record of 13.38 seconds that in the title feature race Buddy trimmed down to 13.18 seconds, and the South Island’s own stellar star of the youth brigade, 18 year old Connor Rangi (57n) who accumulated enough points to start the title race alongside Buddy at the front of pack. He finished a well-earned fourth with fellow sprintcar young guns Stephen Taylor (21P), Jayden Dodge (41t), Jamie Duff (19c), Sam O’Callaghan (representing Central Motor Speedway) and Matt Leversedge (78c) filling places 5 through to 9. With the exception of Stephen Taylor all are south Island drivers. First of the more mature finishers was Daniel Anderson (44t) in 10th place which is something of a fitting reward for the man who brought Buddy to New Zealand, provided him with a sprintcar and made him part of his family. Everything about Buddy Kofoid defies belief. His fresher than fresh face. His thin as a pin build. His phenomenal speed. His ability to read a speedway track’s ever changing conditions. His uncanny anticipation of other drivers he’s lapping, although this cooler than an ice cold cucumber confesses lapping drivers is the only time he can feel a little worried. Asked if racing was the focus of his month in New Zealand, Buddy says he managed to find time for taking in the southern sights, going on his first ever helicopter ride and doing school work. An 11th grader, Buddy’s school term started on January 8 so from then on it has been hours on the computer with study and assignments. Later in the year he will be a 12th grader after which comes College, but not for Buddy; he’ll be sprintcar racing full time with his ultimate objective to race NASCAR or follow Ayrton Senna, his all-time motorsport hero, into Formula 1. What they say… Daniel Anderson (44t) who brought Buddy to New Zealand. … The morning after his big

win, Buddy was already talking about working on ways to return to defend the 2019 Title. He’s also keen for people to appreciate that his Title win is a win for his, and my, crew. Crew chief Doug Rutz who owned several of the sprintcars Buddy raced in the States, Bradley and Anna Malloy, Te Anau, Trevor and Linda Bain, In the VIP area it's thumbs up for Civil Construction's Paul Horrell with son's Balclutha, Colin Freddie(7) and Jack(5) enjoying the company of staff, customers, suppliers and and Charlaine friends. As main sponsor of the 2019 NZ Sprintcar Title, Paul said his support goes way back to when he was growing up in Cromwell and was a regular at Heavy Trax Black of Fairview, Hire Central Motor Speedway [Photo supplied] Queenstown, my raised the bar for sprintcar racing, and not daughter Courtney just in the South Island but the North Island, and partner Amanda, not forgetting motor too builder Jim Richmond who flew out from the US to support Buddy at the New Zealand Sprintcar GP. Mike Sentch, Central Motor Speedway track announcer … Never in my years of motorsport have I seen grids one and two of a Title race occupied by a 17 and 18 year old (Nelson’s Connor Rangi). The huge crowds both nights at Heavy Trax Central Motor Speedway also show the popularity of speedway and the contribution it makes to the region’s economy. AJ Batt, speedway author, co-founder of the South Island’s Sprintcar War of the Wings and track announcer … Buddy, what a talent. I think his breaking the track record in the Title feature race summed up his dominance.
