ROTARY AND MŌKIHI TRUST JOIN FORCES FOR NATIVE PLANTING

Last Saturday there was a combined working bee at Richards Beach between Cromwell Rotary and Mōkihi Trust. The project is the clearing of willows, briar and lupins and the planting of in total 350 native trees and shrubs, part of a long term beatification scheme on the lake front.

Heart Foundation Fundraising Event this Saturday A charity auction will be held at the Cromwell Community Squash Club this Saturday with amazing auction items donated by local businesses up for grabs - all proceeds will go to the Heart Foundation.

The Cromwell Community Squash Club is hosting a Masters Squash Tournament and Charity Auction this weekend in an attempt to raise $5,000 for the Heart Foundation. Over $2,000 has already been raised through entry fees and it is hoped this goal will be achieved with funds raised at the auction on Saturday night.

Over 50 players have registered to take part in the tournament which begins Friday evening and runs through to Saturday. The charity auction will follow on from the tournament prize giving and members of the public are welcome to pop in anytime to watch the games, enter the raffles and check out the impressive auction items up for grabs.

The auction will be held from 7pm at the Cromwell Community Squash Club on the corner of Neplusultra and Achil Streets. “Anyone is welcome and it is free to attend, there's plenty of parking and the bar will be open so come along and

join us for a social night in” says event organiser and club secretary Amy Young who lost her mother suddenly several years ago to cardiac arrhythmia. “We are hoping to attract as many people as we can from the community to join us and support this great cause!” Amy adds.

There has been an incredible response to the event with Highlands Motorsport Park donating a Hot Lap with Tony Quinn in his $4.2 million dollar Vulcan on the weekend of the NZ Endurance Championships on the 25th November, the package also includes entry to the event and VIP hospitality. Auction items also include a Single Vineyard Pinot Noir Collection donated by Mt Difficulty Wines, a magnum duo donated by Quartz Reef Wines and a Bose package from Gary Anderson with further items being added. Another special item is a brazier made by Amy’s younger brother.

Various other prizes have also been donated and will be raffled on the night.

Local businesses Masterwood Joinery, Cromwell Pharmacy, Infinite Energy, Breen Homes, Weka Landscaping, Affleck & O’Meara, Wine Solutions and Central Panel Beaters have also supported the event by offering prizes for the participants.

The Cromwell Community Squash club fully supports the event with club president Jason van Lierop saying “it’s going to be one heck of a weekend on and off the court so the Cromwell Community Squash Club looks forward to inviting everyone indoors at anytime over the event, whether they are there to play squash, support the bar or bid at the auction”, many members have also volunteered their time to help run the event.

“We have a goal to reach $5,000 for the Heart Foundation through entry fees, the charity auction, raffles and further donations which can be made online, we hope to achieve that goal and more” says Amy. “So join us at Cromwell Community Squash Club at 7pm on Saturday 16th of June and get bidding on these amazing auction items”. Drawing for Everyone Online Course with Joanne Deaker

Images are powerful. Creating drawings and paintings is a uniquely human activity. It helps us ‘see’ what is there in the moment (either physically or in our imagination). Humans have derived joy from this process throughout the ages and you can share in this too. Professional artist, Joanne Deaker says “I believe anyone can draw, its just a matter of learning.

So many older children and adults give up on it because they think it is a talent but drawing, like reading and writing is a skill, therefore it can be learned”.

‘Drawing for Everyone Online’ is designed to teach the basic skills of drawing. Created and run by Joanne, this membership based course takes you though a series of projects from learning to draw a simple object to drawing more and more complex ones. In the process you learn all the skills of drawing in a fun and sequential way. The full course (‘active’ participation) includes videos, written instructions with pictures, live streamed video reviews, a private facebook group, direct feedback on projects, the ability to ask and have questions answered and an online exhibition. It will run over term 3 of the school year, beginning on 23 July 2018, with registration opening Friday 15 June (numbers limited).

It is suitable for both adults and mature children (10+).

This will be the first ever series of what is a unique drawing course created to help empower the wider community with art (by being online), whilst still having a connection between participants and between teacher and pupils. Joanne says “I believe in the power of images to uplift and empower: not only in the final image, but in the process of image creation and it is this joy of creation that I love to share.” Joanne has received funding from the CODC Creative Communities Scheme and elsewhere so that she is able to launch this inaugural course and offer it at an extremely affordable rate.

IBD and Iberogast.

IBD stands for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. It is made up of two main conditions: Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. It is estimated that nearly 20,000 New Zealanders live with these conditions of inflamed sore and irritated intestines leading to pain and cramping. With no set pattern of symptoms, it can be hugely debilitating to suffer from flare-ups and complications.

However, there is a new kid on the block (so-to-speak) for relief of symptoms.

Have Your Say About Cromwell’s Future Plenty of great feedback about Cromwell’s future is coming through in the Cromwell `Eye to the Future’ Masterplan public drop-in sessions on this month.

“We’re hearing loud and clear the community’s thoughts on the growth Cromwell is facing, on current development, the mall and hall, and on what they value about their place,” says CODC Executive Manager – Planning and Environment, Louise van der Voort.

Around 80 people came along to two dropin sessions held at the Cromwell Public Library on Saturday and Wednesday last week.

“There are definitely some `hot topics’ – the future of the Mall, the town’s unprecedented growth, how we can grow the town in a balanced and sustainable way, and the importance of the surrounding landscapes and lake— these are all issues locals are passionate about,” Ms Van der Voort says.

“We’ll be making sure that we build the conversations we’ve been having into the Masterplan work currently underway.”

As well as sharing their views, people can answer three questions at the drop-ins: what they like about living in Cromwell, what they’d like to change about Cromwell, and what would they like Cromwell to be known for in the future.

Two further drop-ins are coming up on Saturday 16 June at the Mall Frontage (Lode Lane end) 10-1pm and on Saturday 23 June at the Cromwell Sports Club, Anderson Park, 2-5pm. People who come along to a drop-in will be able to

talk with representatives from the Central Otago District Council and consultancy firm Rationale Ltd. A public survey that will inform the Masterplan will also be running over the next few weeks to canvas people’s thoughts. This will be available both online and in print in The Cromwell Bulletin and Cromwell News.

Industry and sector sessions are also being held over the coming week. These are advertised in both The Bulletin and Cromwell News.

Community feedback gathered over this time will help set the direction for the Masterplan process. A shortlist of options will be presented to the Cromwell Community Board in September.

If approved, the community will be asked for their views as part of a public consultation before the Masterplan is finalised.

Thanks to the generous support of Trustpower, Central Otago Rotary Clubs and local businesses, the Trustpower Lend a Hand Foundation was able to make grants totalling more than $13,000 during 2017/18.

The Foundation’s main aim is to assist small charitable organisations and individuals in the Central Otago area. However, when resources permit, the Foundation invites applications for a grant towards larger community projects which will benefit the Central Otago region and its residents. Protecting your Property in a Relationship If you have spent time building up an asset base then hopefully you have also given thought as to how those assets could be protected in the event you enter into a new relationship.

One great way to provide protection for your assets is to enter into a Contracting Out Agreement (or what some people may refer to a Pre-Nuptial Agreement). This Agreement can define what is separate property and what is relationship property. This is important, as once you have been in a qualifying relationship (as defined by the Act, usually once you have been in a relationship for three years) then all relationship property is subject to equal sharing with your spouse, de facto or civil union partner, subject to certain exceptions. Whereas separate property is exactly that, your separate property and it may not need to be shared with your partner or taken into account in the event of death or a separation. The idea being that if the relationship came to an end you, and your partner if appropriate, could leave the relationship with your separate property intact.

In the event you have a Family Trust in place to provide protection for your assets, it is still recommended that consideration be given to entering into a Contracting Out Agreement. The protection once afforded to Trusts is being eroded, and in the event the Trust was established during the relationship or in contemplation of the relationship your partner may be able to bring a claim against the Trust in the event of a separation in certain circumstances.

A Contracting Out Agreement is an excellent way to provide certainty to you and your partner, and is enforceable in the event of separation or death. A Contracting Out Agreement must be witnessed and certified correctly by independent lawyers to be binding.

The College News Congratulations to Rota Lafita and Owain Harris on their record breaking efforts at our swimming championships recently. There was the usual competitive spirit in the championship races along with lots of noisy encouragement in the interhouse events. Ka nui te pai to Clutha House on their win. A special thanks to parents who supported the day and to house captains and senior students for organising and motivating the masses for the house competition.

Three very skilled and entertaining actors from the New Zealand Playhouse Theatre brought the works of Shakespeare to life for junior students recently. Their portrayal of a modern day Shakespearian tragedy based on the varied ideas from our students was creative and engaging.

We held a community meeting recently looking at future property issues and options and our Board is very grateful for thoughts from those who attended.

We expect around 100 more students in three years time with our roll heading towards 600. Apart from growth we have some aging facilities New Zealand Music Month Concerts - Cameron Miller in the technology, science, music and performance areas week’s assembly for our first Reward of our school. Some of our next steps Card prize draws for Stirling Sports include discussion with the CODC vouchers. Students have completed

around their Master planning process and sharing ideas and challenges, gathering further predicted roll growth information and making contact again with the Ministry of Education about the planning process.

We had 22 Year 7 and 8 students attend the National Young Leaders Day in Dunedin recently and they were a credit to our school. The theme was ‘Me Whakaaro Rangatira’ which translates to ‘think like a leader’ and each of the speakers weaved this idea into their motivating presentations.

This week we have our junior Waimate exchange with students being billeted in Waimate. The experience is not only a sporting one but an opportunity to build relationships with students from another school and share in the hospitality of another home. We have an inaugural senior exchange with students from Bayfield High School in Dunedin in the last week of this term.

This Saturday evening senior students trip ‘To the Moon and Back’ for their senior formal at Memorial Hall. The ‘arrival’ is always a memorable event for our community and we are looking forward to another glittering occasion in the company of our fabulous rangatahi.

LETTERS Cromwell is developing rapidly and most are well aware that there are several new subdivisions taking place currently, or soon. Did you realize however, that there is an application in to CODC at the moment for the zoning to change for the area to the right of all Sandflat Road (opposite Speedway and the Motorsport Park)! We would have thought something of this nature could have been advertised more openly/often even by our Cromwell Community Board, if not CODC. It is proposed that 900! dwellings, plus a few shops, plus a retirement village, plus a possible school etc be built on this piece of land. This is equivalent to a small town and we think a lot of thought and input/consultation from community should be happening before the zoning is allowed to change.

Do you want another satellite town there? Do you feel happy that Speedway and the Highlands Motorsport Park could become threatened in the future? Typically some of the large number of people living opposite would be bound to have objections to the noise, even knowing these amenities were there first…

Wasn’t that the point of having these facilities on the OUTSKIRTS of town, so that they wouldn’t be affecting neighbours directly? What about vacant land between SH and Waenga Road, plus other pockets being developed first?

Why should developers decide the shape and direction of our town?

If you are prepared to spend a little time and effort you can put in a submission to CODC, go to their website and look for Plan Change 13. There is a submission form and conditions there, but you will have to be quick. Submissions close on Wednesday 20th JUNE! Act quick,

Proposed Plan Change 13 is now open for public submissions.

If approved, it will allow 900 residential units, (some on minimum section sizes of 160 sqm) to be built adjacent to State Highway 8 and Sandflat Road.

The application is 553 pages long and a copy is only available to be viewed at Council offices and libraries, or on the Council’s website.

When I rang Council to ask for a hard copy I was told that I could not obtain a copy unless I paid $110.60. According to Council, there is a different process surrounding the availability of copies to the public depending on whether the public notification is for a resource consent application or a private plan change, you can get a free copy for a resource consent application but not for a private plan change.

Too bad if you work full time, or don’t have the ability or inclination to try and read such a enormous document on your cell phone or tablet, or if you don’t have internet access.

Too bad if you can make it to the offices or libraries and find someone else reading it.

So unless you have deep pockets, or a fast internet connection or the time to read the whole application at the counter of a service centre or a library you may be missing out on making an informed submission on this proposed plan change.

Submissions close on Wednesday 20 June.

Cromwell residents, Is anyone else concern with the council’s attitude to the future of Cromwell. There seems to be no district plan or any pre–thought on where all these new people that are coming into our town are going to live. Why is there going to be another satellite town created on Sandflat road, affecting a lot of people that are making their livelihoods in the area and are not having their concerns listen too.

Has anyone in community considered the impact of this new subdivision on established businesses? Are we willing to see the end of Central speedway, Highlands Motorsport park and Jones orchard in terms of reverse sensitivity? Are the Alexandra based CODC not seeing the bigger picture?

There is still land closer to the CBD of Cromwell that is still bare(except for the broom) available for housing! This should be developed first before we carve up more of our rural land.

I don’t know, but it is starting to have a greater impact on the future of Cromwell that really can not be underestimated.

Peregrine Wines is a well established, family owned producer of premium wines in Central Otago. We are seeking to expand our vineyard team at our Bendigo Estate. An opportunity exists for a candidate experienced in organic / biodynamic viticulture, or for those who are not experienced but have an enthusiasm for such viticultural procedures.

This is a full time position and the successful applicant will become an integral member of a progressive vineyard team, benefitting from Peregrine’s career development programme.

While experience would be highly beneficial, a willingness to learn is a primary attribute and the position will suit applicants from a wide background. Primary tasks will involve hands on day to day operation of the vineyards.

P CROMWELL RUGBY CLUB BWC Cromwell had a good win against Matakanui 43 10 in Oamaku to retain The Travis Hamilton Memorial Trophy.

This was a game where the scoreline suggests was comfortable, but Matakanui played well with the ball and tested BWC Cromwell's defence which held on well, and when BWC Cromwell had the ball the used it well at times to score 7 tries.The first of these was to Devon Mathieson which was a good team try with lots of passing between backs and forwards as they swept down the field. This was a feature of alot of the tries scored during both halves and these tries were scored by George Tiko, who got 2, Kane Dodds, Ethan Molloy, Matt Breiley, and Ollie James and Kane Dodds kicked 4 conversions to complete the scoring.While BWC Cromwell did play well there were some frustrating times where BWC Cromwell played to loose and did not control the ball and turned over alot of ball which we will have to sort out as we get to the bussiness end of the season in a few weeks.

Players to stand out were Warwick Chinny, Rhys Harrold, Devon Mathieson,George Tiko, Alex Grogan with Player Of The Day going to Dane Edge who had a great game at 1st five.

BWC Cromwell's next game is against a very good Wakatipu side, who have set the pace for this years competition and will be hard to beat on their home ground in Queenstown.

It would be great to have your support for this game which will kick of at the slightly later time of 3.00pm due to the Wakatipu Wanderers playing an Invercargill team before our match. Hope to see you there

CROMWELL BADMINTON CLUB Layton was really happy to finally win the round and round competition last Thursday after coming second a few weeks ago. Blade was runner up. A good number of junior players along for the night, as well as seven senior players.

ANZ helping Cromwell achieve their netball goals this netball season The ANZ Premiership is back for a second season and ANZ is asking what Cromwell netballer fans and supporters need to achieve their netball aspirations.

ANZ knows the time, the effort and determination that’s required to get to the top is immense, but no one achieves on their own, it’s the support that can make the difference in achieving your goals. To celebrate the start of the ANZ Premiership season ANZ is calling for applications for assistance that will help Cromwell netball fans achieve their netball aspirations.

The support is not limited to kit, it could be anything big, small or off-the-wall. In the past ANZ support has spanned high performance netball gear, expert coaching, court and club makeovers, to dream experiences. In 2017 one lucky young player was granted the opportunity to be the minimanager of an ANZ Premiership team for a day as a reminder to continue working hard and not give up on your netball dreams. And a long serving coach was surprised by stars of ANZ Premiership and awarded a trip to watch the Silver Ferns play in Australia, as a thank you for her commitment and inspiration she has provided to her teams over the years.

Over the past five years ANZ has supported teams, clubs, schools and players all over New Zealand to the value of nearly $500,000.
