PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR RIDE ROUND THE LAKE Another very successful annual “Cromwell Rotary Club Round the Lake Bike Ride� event attracted a great crowd of 45 riders who enjoyed the perfect weather conditions to complete the 90 kilometre ride around Lake Dunstan. A great local event that finished in Rotary Park at McNulty Inlet with a BBQ and Prize-giving.

The event which is a fundraiser for the Cromwell Rotary Club to fund Mental Wellbeing initatives in the region. In the past the money has supported Cecilai Lashlie and Nathan Makaere-Wallis to the region to talk about parenting and brain development respectively. also healthly relationship programmes for Cromwell College and the popular Sexwise drama group to the School.

Saturday 7th October saw another successful annual Stroke Foundation event held with the help of Rotary, St John and New World. 122 shoppers at New World in Cromwell took advantage of the opportunity to have their Blood Pressure checked by one of the St John team in attendance. Barbara O’Kane and Nerida Laws [photo] were early shoppers to take up the offer, with Rotarian Maureen Butcher poised to collect the statistics.

We are volunteers in partnership with DOC who look after the Scenic Reserve by cutting and spraying invasive brier and other weeds, collecting roadside rubbish, trialling the restoration of snow-tussocks from collected seed, and keeping a photographic record of what we find: the photos also serve to register changes taking place at the Pass from year to year. Each season we also take exploratory walks in the Reserve, to learn about it.

It is a very beautiful place to spend a day.

Professor Mark Stirling is the Inaugural Chair of Earthquake Science at the University of Otago. He is a seismologist with a multidisciplinary background in geology and seismology, and specialises in the integration of geological, seismological and geodetic datasets for seismic hazard modelling. He moved to his present position at Otago in February 2016, and prior to that was a Principal Scientist at GNS Science. He has led the development of the last three versions of the national seismic hazard model for New Zealand (1998, 2002 and 2012), which is the hazard basis for the New Zealand Loadings Standard. He has been the recipient of two Otto Glogau Awards from the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering for his publications, was Society President for the period 2004-2006, and was made a Fellow of the Society in 2007. He is currently an Associate Editor for the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.

Kiwi stars confirmed for Highlands 501 Shane van Gisbergen and ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett, are the latest big names confirmed for the Highlands 501 from November 10-12. The Highlands 501 will be the last Australian GT event to be held at the Central Otago track and it promises to be a fitting finale featuring two of the most exciting drivers in the country.

Highlands has been a happy hunting ground for van Gisbergen who won the Highlands 101 in 2015 with Klark Quinn. The V8 Supercars star celebrated with a burnout in front of the fans on the hill and he’s promised a repeat performance in November if he claims his second win in the race.

“I’d never done a skid in a GT car before and it was a pretty cool way to celebrate,” says van Gisbergen. “Hopefully I get the chance to do it again but I’m just stoked Tony has invited me to race in the McLaren. It’s the last Australian GT race at Highlands and I really wanted to be there. I love the race, I love the format and it’s one of my favourite tracks in the world.”

For drift superstar, ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett, it’s another chance to show off his circuit racing skills after an impressive debut at last year’s Hampton Downs 101.

“It’s a dream come true to get back to Highlands and have another crack in a GT car,” says Whiddett. ““I love GT racing. It’s so different to drifting where three judges decide if you win or lose. In the GTs if you’re fast, you’ve got the lap times to prove it. If you’re not, you’re out the back.”

Van Gisbergen and Whiddett received wildcard entries for the event from Highlands owner, Tony Quinn. Quinn has entered two McLaren 650S GT3 cars in the Highlands 501 with driving duties to be shared between van Gisbergen, Whiddett, Highlands resident professional, Andrew Waite and Quinn.

“I put everything into it last year to make sure I was as prepared as possible but even so, I surprised myself. I had no idea how I was going to stack up against some of the top drivers in Australia and New Zealand. To qualify the car in the top ten and finish 8th overall was a huge confidence boost.”

“I can’t decide which drivers to put in which car so we’ve decided to open it up to the public,” says Quinn. “Let us know which drivers you’d like to see racing together by visiting the Highlands Facebook page.”

“It’s all about getting a feel for the car. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a GT car or a drift car, on a motorbike or a skateboard.

It’s a tool and it’s about making that tool a part of your body as fast as possible.”

Whiddett ended up in hospital in 2015 after he put his drift car into the wall at Highlands, but he’s hoping for better luck at the Highlands 501.

“Highlands requires 100 percent commitment,” says Whiddett. “There’s so much elevation change. There’s no room for error anywhere. Like SVG, I’ve raced on a lot of different tracks around the world and Highlands is my favourite.”

Everyone who votes will go in the draw to win Fastlaps in Highlands new Ferrari 488 GTB at the Highlands 101. The winner will get free entry to the Highlands 101 and four laps in the passenger seat of the Ferrari with the four different drivers: van Gisbergen, Whiddett, Waite and Quinn.

The Highlands 501 doubles as the final round of the Australian Endurance Championship. Two weeks before the Highlands event the cars and stars of the Australian GT series will race in the Laser Plumbing & Electrical Hampton Downs 500 from October 28-29.

Shingles - Could you be the 1 in 3?

Around 1 in 3 people will get shingles in their lifetime … and there is no way of knowing who it will be.

When you’re young, your immune system is usually strong enough to keep the virus in check. But as you age, it becomes easier for shingles to break through your body’s defences.

Two thirds of shingles cases occur in people aged 50 and older; by the age of 85, half of people will have experienced shingles.

Shingles can be even more painful than it looks. It appears as an unsightly, blistering rash, more often on your face or torso.

Whilst the rash can look terrible it is the pain that most sufferers remember. Because the rash can develop into chronic nerve pain than can last for months – even years – after the rash has healed.

Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus, so if you’ve had chickenpox, you are carrying the shingles virus too. That’s because the chickenpox virus never leaves your body. Instead, it stays in your nervous system and can re-emerge as shingles at any time, but particularly if you are “under the weather”.

A NZ sufferer described it like this… “The pain just goes on and on … you can’t get away from it. It’s like your nerves are sitting on top of your skin.”

So please please please, if you are over 50, go to your doctor and get vaccinated against shingles. Younger people, please hound your older relatives to consider having the vaccination. Although it is non-funded it is well worth the insurance!

Affordable Housing Trust for Central Otago Announcement from Mayor Tim Cadogan During the local body election campaign last year, a strong call was made by the public that the Council and the Mayor do something about a perceived lack of affordable housing in Central Otago.

This was a call made particularly loudly in Cromwell where house, section and rental prices have continued to greatly increase since that time. Other areas such as Clyde and Alexandra have also seen similar issues.

I established a working group comprising myself, Neil Gillespie, Nigel McKinlay (District Councillors and Cromwell Community Board Members), Werner Murray (Cromwell Community Board Member) and Glen Christiansen (former

Cromwell Community Board Member) to decide on the best response.

As a result of that, four people have put their hands up to be inaugural Trustees of an Affordable Housing Trust for Central Otago. These people are Glen Christiansen, Kate Scott (Executive Director Landpro), Mary Flannery (Solicitor AWS Legal) and Stephen Brent (Partner Cavell Leitch Lawyers and a current Trustee of the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust). These people bring a wealth of experience and commitment to what will be a significant role.

Having a strong voice outside of Council applying pressure, devising solutions and managing what eventuates has proven very effective in making inroads into the housing affordability issue in other areas and I look forward to seeing what this group will bring to Council in time to come.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Today I witnessed a scary driving incident.

I was heading towards Cromwell on the Bannockburn road. A cyclist and other traffic were heading towards Bannockburn.

The commercial vehicle slowed down behind the cyclist and after I passed the cyclist he pulled over to the other side of the road to give cyclist plenty of space. At least one car that was following the truck took the opportunity to whizz between the cyclist and the truck!

This is the second time this sort of driving has been seen on this road in the last few days.

Cyclist beware we have some very impatient drivers in the area!

With daylight saving now upon us and more day light hours available we all need to be extra vigilant with what is going on around us, if you see anything suspicious please report it immediately to the police. Whilst we are not a taxi service we do care about young people out late at night and are quite happy to ring someone if they do need a lift home especially if they are feeling threatened in anyway.

We notice that more and more items are being left lying around the place, bikes, scooters etc. Please don’t put temptation in front of certain people. When we see these we usually put them over the fence into the property that is closest or take them up to the police station’s lost and found department.

With Guy Fawkes fast approaching remember to stay safe and watch out for animals that might have bolted in fright. Also keep an eye on the little ones.

We appreciate the ongoing support we receive form local businesses and in turn return the favour by looking out for their property along with all the others in our community.

Homemade is Best

Christmas Cake

I had a message nearly 2 years ago from Linda Clement asking if I intended to have a Christmas cake recipe in the Bulletin. It was a bit late for publishing so we swapped recipes. This is the one she sent me, I am off to get the ingredients.

Bring to the boil: 2 c water 500g butter 1 kilo mixed fruit ( I use the pkt fruit but your choice) 2 tsp mixed spice 2 Tbsp vinegar Take off the heat & add: 2 tsp baking soda 2 tins condensed milk Essence or brandy to taste Mix together & when nearly cold add: 4 c flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt Line a 26cm tin with high sides Place in a cold oven. Cook at 125 degrees for 3 1/2 hours NB: I wrap folded newspaper around the outside of the tin & secure it with string to help avoid burning.

This is a very large cake. Recipe could be halved or use two tins.
