Rotary Book Sale 2017 Wrap Up The Rotary Club would like to thank the Cromwell Community for another extremely successful Book Sale held over Queens Birthday Weekend.

The four-day event raised more than $15,000 for community projects.

The sale was again held in the Cromwell Bowling Club rooms, on Alpha Street. The decision to open the venue earlier on Friday this year proved very popular with customers. A queue formed early that morning with people keen to be first in to spot a bargain or find a treasure.

The excellent venue has plenty of parking with good natural lighting and heating allowing the team to display well the thousands of quality second-hand books, magazines and children’s books, puzzles, music CD’s, videos, and records generously donated by the Cromwell community.

This book sale has established itself as a regular attraction with the local community and book lovers coming from far and wide to find good stocks of winter reading or special interest treasures. One unexpected but welcome visitor spotted hunting out a “good read” was Amy Adams our Minister of Justice.

This is a great collaborative Rotary event with careful planning by team leader Lindsay Wilkie. This success also relies on the support and generosity of a number of Cromwell organisations and businesses.

FROM THE “WAR CORRESPONDENT”

FIRST WORLD WAR This column (contributed by the Cromwell RSA) will be published nearly every fortnight to report on what was happening in New Zealand and at war 100 years ago. The Cromwell RSA thanks the Cromwell Bulletin for publishing this column.

Government support for new tourism facilities for Central Otago News that Central Otago District Council (CODC) has been successful in gaining $318,000 government funding for tourism infrastructure projects has been warmly welcomed.

The NZ Division was relieved at Messines on the night 9/10 June 2017. They proceeded to camps to the rear to rest and reorganise. On 12 June orders were given for the 2nd NZ Brigade, including the two battalions of the Otago Regiment, to return to the front line and take over the St. Yves sector (from the Australian Imperial Forces) lying between Messines to the north and the Bois de Ploegsteert to the south. On taking over this sector patrols were sent forward across the front line at night in order to determine if the enemy still held the adjacent strong-points or had moved back to straighten his forward positions after the battle for Messines. Given the “blackness of the nights”, it was difficult to gain information, but several patrols were fired on.

Tourism Minister Paula Bennett today announced the successful projects in the second round of the Regional Midsized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund.

On 13 June instructions were issued for the 2nd NZ Infantry Brigade to advance its front to a depth of 2 kilometres, and to seize the enemy’s forward posts, with the intention of eventually linking them up. The operation was to be carried out during the evening without the assistance of an artillery barrage. It was calculated that the undertaking was a comparatively simple one; that it was merely a question of dribbling forward small parties unobserved by the enemy and seizing successive objectives on the way, each objective affording support and covering fire for the capture of the next.

It was further presumed that the enemy had withdrawn his main strength. The task, however, was much more difficult than thought. Late in the afternoon information was received that the 25th British Division, on the left of the NZ Brigade, had no intention of moving forward that day without artillery support, and that therefore the New Zealand Division was committed to the operation alone and without artillery support.

• Works to upgrade the plumbing systems of two existing toilet facilities at Lake Dunstan (Weatherall Creek and Champagne Gully), and construct new toilet facilities in the Cromwell town centre. The plumbing upgrades will improve capacity at both sites, enhancing their ability to respond to increased visitor numbers, including freedom campers. The Cromwell town centre toilet facilities will help address strong visitor growth in the town. ($178,800 government co-funding for the $298,000 project)

The operation was accordingly undertaken, but was only partially successful. Troops of the 3rd (Rifle) NZ Brigade on the right flank reached their objective, but those of the 2nd Infantry Brigade came under heavy fire from enemy artillery.

Instead of going forward at 9pm, the Otago Battalion did not move until 11.30pm. The night was intensely dark, the troops committed to the attack did not know the country well (just having arrived in the Sector), and there was great danger of losing direction. This was actually what happened to the Otago Battalion on the left. They completely lost their way, and finally arrived back at where they had started out from without accomplishing anything.

Visitor spending in Otago was up eight per cent to an estimated $3.6 billion for the year to April and Mrs Bennett said the new facilities would help the region respond to and benefit from growth in the local tourism sector.

Two CODC projects were successful: • The installation of solar powered compacting rubbish and recycling bins at eight sites around Lake Dunstan, Clyde, Alexandra and Roxburgh. The project will increase the Council’s ability to respond to growing visitor demand and ensure the surrounding area is kept rubbish free. ($139,200 government co-funding for the $173,000 project)

“The news that this district has gained the largest amount of any in Otago in the second round of the Regional Midsized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund, with almost half the $690,000 granted in Otago coming here, is obviously great news,” said Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan. “This will allow the Council to work to ameliorate the effect of the huge increase in tourist numbers in the district for the benefit of both the visitors and locals alike.”

“While tourism is hugely valuable to the economy, it’s important locals continue to support the sector and are able to enjoy their own spaces – quality infrastructure helps with that.”

This is the second and final round of the Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund, which was announced at Budget 2016 to provide co-funding for infrastructure used by visitors and locals, such as carparks, toilets, rubbish disposal and minor water management projects.

“The fund will be subsumed by the new Tourism Infrastructure Fund of $100 million over four years, which will support local communities facing pressure from tourism growth and in need of assistance – areas with high visitor numbers but small ratepayer bases, for example,” said Mrs Bennett.

PARISH CHURCH HALL RECEIVES FUNDING BOOST The Cromwell – Upper Clutha Catholic Parish received a grant of $60,000 from Central Lakes Trust to help upgrade its Parish Hall in Cromwell.

This was one of 10 grants totalling over quarter of a million dollars that was approved by Central Lakes Trust in its latest funding round.

The upgrade will see the Parish Hall become a pastoral care centre and will include relocating the Parish office into the hall.

There will also be two rooms that will be made available for the wider community to use.

“The upgrade will provide a more welcoming facility where people who need care and counselling support can come to” Father Martin Flannery said.

“A reasonable part of the funding will be used to enhance the entrance and also chip seal the carpark”.

Central Lakes Trust chairman, Tony Hill was positive about the grant.

“Central Lakes Trust provides funding for charitable purposes and the advancement of religion is one of the four heads of charity” Mr Hill said.

“This project ticks all the right boxes and will provide additional meeting space for community groups in our region to use” he continued.

Cromwell Volunteer Fire Brigade was another to benefit from a Central Lakes Trust grant with $30,000 approved towards the cost of replacing its operational support vehicle. This vehicle is used to transport equipment and personnel to call outs and is essential to its service provision

“The range of grants reflects the Trust’s ongoing commitment to a wide cross-section of organisations and community projects in this region” Paul Allison, Central Lakes Trust Chief Executive said.

The total grants approved by the Trust this financial year (from 1 April 2017) is now over $2.2m out of its annual grants budget of $6.3m.

Lanterns En Masse for New Cromwell Event Editorial and photo supplied A mass release of hundreds of paper lanterns into the night sky is expected to create a spectacular finale for a new winter event in Cromwell.

Light Up Winter, to be held in the Cromwell Mall on Friday, August, 4, will be a family-orientated celebration, marking the end of the darker months in the south, Cromwell and Districts Promotion Group community relationships manager Brigitte Tait, said.

“There will be a night market with craft stalls, food and lots of hot drinks including mulled wine, as well as a live band, street entertainers, and some cool children’s activities. We are planning to deck the Mall out with fairy lights. Lots of fairy lights.”

A competition to create an illuminated hat was expected to be a popular feature of the night, she said.

The Group, working alongside the Mall businesses, are looking for volunteers to help run the event.

“It is very much a community thing and we’d love to have as many people involved as possible. The more hands on deck, the better the event we can provide for our children, visitors and everyone to enjoy after a long cold winter.”

The Group were grateful to the Cromwell Community Board for granting financial support for Light Up Winter to cover basic costs, she said.

Lanterns, fairy lights and illuminated balloons are being gathered to help ‘Light Up Winter’ at a new event. Testing a lantern is Cromwell and Districts Promotion Group’s community relationships manager, Brigitte Tait (left) and Carolyn Murray from Scott Base Winery.

People could buy a lantern and these would all be taken out to the Big Fruit reserve area and released together at the end of the evening’s entertainment. The lanterns, which were biodegradable, would available for purchase prior to the night, she said.

Why do I have to wait for my prescription?

Some of our customers, when commenting about the waiting time for a prescription, feel their prescription could be completed faster. Fair enough too, because when you’re not feeling well, the last thing you feel like doing is waiting at the Chemist.

As medicines experts, pharmacists are here to make sure you get the best results from your prescription, avoid any problems and reduce the chances of developing side effects. Naturally, this takes time.

When you order a prescription or repeat, we instigate a triplechecking procedure which enables us to:  Make sure it includes all the information we need about you and your medicines.  Make sure you receive the maximum funding you are entitled to.  Make sure that the medicine, the dose and the instructions are right for you.  Make sure that the medicine will not react with anything else you are taking.  Check for possible side effects that you should be warned of.  Ring your doctor if we have any concerns.  Update and maintain your individual medicines record.

We also have training programmes in place for two of our technicians in order to further qualify them. If your expectation for a timely service is not being met, please make us aware of this.

The Battle with Lagarosiphon.

Sometimes it is healthy to see the funny side of a serious problem!

I refer to the lead (front page) article of the Central Otago Mirror of Wednesday 24 May 2017. That article opens with the statement (presumably from the LINZ or NIWA representative at the meeting on the “weed in our lakes problem”): “There is not enough tea in China to solve the weed infestation in Otago’s lakes and rivers”.

How typical is that; blame something else – in this case China’s lack of tea. Why can’t we think outside the square and get tea from India, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Pakistan, Indonesia – or even Australia. Why can’t the New Zealand Government order all those who own land (including all our residential sections) to grow a plot of tea; surely that would produce enough tea to solve our lake weed problems. On the other hand, we could do nothing and sit down and have a cup of tea.

The Editor, As a ratepayer within the Cromwell area I am most concerned with the proposed Plan change, which would allow the Wooing Tree Vineyard to be subdivided into 210 residential lots and many commercial lots.

I believe this is going to have a huge detrimental effect on the township of Cromwell and the surrounds.

I would implore the residents of the Cromwell area to read and obtain a concise copy of the Proposed Plan change from the Central Otago District Council, submissions which close on the 23 June 2017. After this date it is too late to have your say.

The residents of Gavin and Derry Streets have been informed that the trees at the bottom of both Streets are to be cut down which is a shame. Who we feel sorry for are the few residents that dump all their rubbish under the trees and on the greenway. They are going to have to be like the rest of us and dispose of it the right way. If you take a walk behind the motel fence it’s a tip. Further along old parked cars and all sorts of rubbish including green waste, ashes etc. All the other greenways are lovely lush and green so hope we get one as well.

In response to the “Have Your Say” of 1 June, I feel I must respond to some of the statements written by Robin Dicey.

Firstly; Councils cannot totally ban freedom camping.

Sections 12 and 5 of the Freedom Camping Act 2011 makes that plain. The CODC has no choice but to work within that legal parameter.

Secondly; the problem area of the Bendigo boat ramp identified by Mr Dicey is not, as he is well aware, Council land. As it is not Council land; the Council cannot make a by-law in regard to it. What we have done is to talk directly with LINZ (who administer the land on behalf of the Crown) to express the communities extreme dissatisfaction with the state of this area over this summer and to work together to try to find solutions. That is an on-going process in which we continue to advocate strongly for better toilet and waste facilities and far more rigorous enforcement of restrictions of length of stays.

Thirdly; Mr Dicey takes issue with “the mess that is being caused by these folk (freedom campers) with the costs being carried by the local community who has to clean up after them, and the response of our mayor in asking for more money for more facilities to deal with the problem”. Just to be clear; in regard to most of the sites used for freedom camping in Central, the cost of cleaning up is not borne by the local community at all, it is borne by LINZ. In the context that we cannot ban freedom camping, asking for more money from the Government to build infrastructure to assist in dealing with the problem in areas the Council does control is a pragmatic action to take. The efforts that have been made in this regard have played a part in having the fund allocated to the regions for such infrastructure increased by over 500% as announced in May this year. Central Otago has also benefitted from $317,200 in Government money just this week to assist to build new infrastructure.

What myself and my Council are working hard to do is to minimize the impact of a situation that we mostly cannot control at as low a cost as possible to the ratepayers.

To the person stealing ice creams at Arthur’s Cinema: I hope you feel ashamed of yourself.

During the month of May until early June over $500 (wholesale) worth of ice cream was stolen from the back inventory freezer at the cinema. We have no idea who is responsible for this theft, but the police have been notified.

Arthur’s is a not-for-profit cinema trying very hard to offer Cromwell a professional, friendly, top notch entertainment venue. We price our food and beverages fairly so they are accessible to all in the community. Countless hours of volunteer labour, ideas, management and organisation go into running the show – not to mention the generous monetary donations from many members and businesses of our community.

Not only are we out the net invoices for the stock, and any profit we could have earned, we have lost some faith and will now need to install a lock on the freezer (another added expense for us).

I am very saddened by this. And I hope who ever did this feels sad, too.

Homemade is Best Pumpkin Parmesan Risotto 50g butter 2 Tbsp chopped onion 4 cups chicken stock 500g pumpkin chopped into 1cm cubes 1c arborio rice Melt half of the butter in a large heavy based saucepan & cook the onion till soft.

In a separate pot heat the stock & keep warm.

Add the pumpkin & the rice to the onion, stir to combine.

Add a couple of ladlefuls of stock & stir continuously until all the liquid is absorbed.

Repeat this process for around 30 mins adding boiling water if you need to, the mix is cooked when the rice & pumpkin are tender.

Stir in the remaining butter, S&P to taste & 3 Tbsp’s grated parmesan ( chopped parsley is a nice addition also).

BWC Cromwell opened the scoring with a converted try to fullback Clayton Buchanan in the first minute of the game. But Matakanui came back into the game with a try of their own as they built pressure, as BWC Cromwell kept making mistakes and turning the ball over inside their half.

Then it seemed whoever had the ball would score a try, as both teams went try for try and the score was looked up at 19 all at halftime.

The first part of the second half was much the same as both teams scoring tries, but BWC Cromwell got their noses in front with 3 quick tries, all to Clayton Buchanan, who ended up scoring an outstanding 4 tries in the game, by using has pace to out flank the Matakanui defenders, after there were some good options taken by the team to set the tries up. Clayton also defended well at fullback to snuff out the Matakanui attack.

Players to stand out were Ben Maxwell, Scott Wills, Blake McPhee, Stefan Blakeborough, and the Player Of The Day went to Clayton Buchanan for an outstanding game at fullback.

Thanks very much for all the supporters who travelled to watch BWC Cromwell play. It is always great to have that support when we are away from Cromwell.

BWC Cromwell’s next game is against the pace setters of this year in the competition, Wakatipu in Queenstown, and kick off will be 2.30pm. This will be a tough game for BWC Cromwell as Wakatipu are a big confident team, who have only been beaten once this year.
