a good win in Queenstown beating Basin Blue 39 to 28 on Saturday.

The under 12 Cromwell team are getting excited about their trip to Sydney on the 15th of July. The boys will play 3 games against same grade Australian teams with some sightseeing in between. This trip has been made possible by the boys own fundraising efforts and the team wishes to thank all the coaches, managers friends and family for their support.

Some safety advice

As we are almost in the middle of winter( how have the last 5 months gone so fast?) Cromwell Neighbourhood Support want to ensure we remain a safe and caring community during the shorter days and longer nights.

Older Persons Cromwell is a relatively safe place to live and it is unlikely that you would have an intruder however if you have crime or safety concerns about your neighbourhood then contact the local Police.

• One of the best actions you can take to make your home safer is to get to know your neighbours.

• Don’t open the door to strangers. Install a peephole in your door if possible and if you don’t know someone, keep the door closed • Have a phone by your bed • Have a personal or medical alarm • Have a Life Tube from Age Concern and in an emergency the red Life Tube sticker on your fridge will alert Police, am-bulance or fire service to vital information about you • Ask for a security checklist from Neighbourhood Support • Don’t be tricked - If someone you don’t know asks to make a phone call from your home, offer to make the call for them so they do not need to enter your home • Avoid doing business with strangers who come to the door, phone you or contact you via email • Avoid giving out your name and address or chat if you receive a wrong number phone call • If you suspect an older person is being cheated or abused, contact Citizens Advice Bureau, Age Concern, your commu-nity constable or local Police for advice.

HAVE YOUR SAY #2.... SURVEY RESPONSES The response re freedom camping as in my “Have your Say #2” has been overwhelmingly in favour of banning freedom camping where the vehicle is non-self-contained.

9. If they are employed by an orchard I don’t see why the orchard owners should have to provide accommodation they should find their own accommodation.

Since that little survey came out there has been some legislative change to require all campers to have on-board toilets capable of being used even when a bed is made up in a camper.

10. If they are not self contained they should be in a camping ground and should be fined for going into an area where they are not self contained or even clamped but then we don’t have anybody with that authority anyway.

Sadly I don’t think that this is going to change much as it is aimed at rental campers; our issue is more with the vans and station wagons which were never designed as a camper in the first place. These are by far the most numerous of the vehicles overnighting up at the Bendigo boat ramp.

It does interest me that this problem has been sorted in Europe, sorted in Canada and yet we are trying to solve the problem by increasing the facilities. This will very probably only make the problem worse!

There are websites which campers use to let each other know where they can bludge easily. These websites would also show where these freeloaders are not welcome, if we can show a bit of resolve.

The excerpts below are only a small proportion of the total responses.

Many were by phone. Still more were in conversations. And they are still coming in.. But they do illustrate the way locals regard the issue.

Robin Dicey 1. The real worry is that nobody in Councils has ever taken the problem seriously. Even now it is all talk. Our rivers and lakeside camping areas are absolutely disgusting and Councils sit by and do nothing. So... why should I suppose for one moment that you will actually do something different?

2. We absolutely agree that drivers of non self contained vans should use proper camping grounds. They should not be permitted to camp anywhere else.

3. I am a firm believer in the user pays principal and don’t support just throwing money at the problem by providing free toilet / rubbish facilities on a large scale with ratepayers / taxpayers carrying the capital and on-going costs of cleaning and maintaining. The best solution in my view is banning non self contained campers. However this in itself is not enough, such bans must be enforced and this raises a whole new issue, although wheel clamping does spring to mind.

4. It seems to me we have clearly identified the problem and there is general agreement that it is not acceptable, however until we can develop an appropriate solution, and establish a firm action plan to address, then the Status Quo will remain. Strong leadership is required and we don’t seem to be seeing this.

5. One comment – will the regulatory division of the CODC ensure that non-compliant campers are policed, issued instant fines and/or prosecuted? We see problems with all CODC bylaws in that there is no actual enforcement.

6. Further to our phone conversation 2/06/17 I think that socalled freedom camping should be nipped in the bud now before it gets totally out of control. As you have observed places like the Bendigo boat ramp are left in a disgusting mess by what a lot of us call “ Maggots”, ie, those camping in people-movers, tents and cars.

Some even show a self-contained sticker. Ha, Ha, simple to get one, photograph a genuine one with a cellphone, print it off and away you go.

‘The owners of motels and motor camps pay rates and I don’t think rates should be used to provide facilities for non paying visitors. I have seen first-hand when some of these do turn up at a motor-camp for a one night stay they have a weeks washing, waste etc.

7. First things first: why should we as rate payers be paying for freedom campers to have extra toilets provided for them when they don’t even use them.

8. Is there proof that these people even spend money in our town.

They should be made to camp in the camping grounds just like they would if they were overseas. They show no respect for our town and really any other town but the most important thing is they leave their rubbish lying around and use the trees as their toilets and don’t care about the locals.

11. Easy solution just ban freedom camping and the council needs to be supporting local camping grounds rather than let them camp around the lake.

12. The only way to deal with this is to introduce some hard regulations; regulations that will have a very definite impact. The areas where they are camping (e.g. Bendigo) need to be signposted with a warning that freedom camping is prohibited everywhere and such areas need to be inspected on a regular (daily? Every second day? etc.,) basis. Also, a verbal warning is not going to have much, if any, affect and so the introduction of a fine is absolutely essential – and make it substantial and enforceable. I do not think anything below $250 will be affective. The fine needs to be collected the day the warning is given although how that could be handled I have no idea. Perhaps the confiscation of the person’s passport until the fine is paid might be a way to go (but probably too radical for PC brigade).

13. I believe its black & white. Our council imposes a no freedom camping bylaw which will result in two things as I see it. The first being the local camping grounds will have an increase in number of paying guests and secondly we will remove the cause of the pollution and untidy areas these campers make and hence the cost of maintaining these area. Yes we may see a decrease in the number of these travellers coming to our district, but I believe most of these travellers can actually afford to pay a camping fee. If they can’t, do we really want them here anyway. Our business pays the average wage for these people so I simply don’t believe they can’t afford “rent”. After all, most residents are either paying rent or mortgage for a similar wage.

Don’t get me started re employers provision of accommodation. As an employer, I employ people to work for our company and pay them respectively..... I don’t employ them to house them, bathe them and ensure they clean up after themselves! Thats what their mothers did when they were toddlers! As you are aware, I have worked for a number of IT companies in NZ, the UK and Switzerland. None of these companies provided me housing! I am certainly aware that a large proportion of the community believe orchardists and vineyards should provide such facilities. I totally disagree with this and have very strong beliefs that if there was a “no freedom camping “ bylaw/ law and all travellers were staying at designated camping grounds, none of these locals would be complaining. Perception I believe is, that its businesses like ours that are encouraging these travellers here, but they’re coming here because its a free stay, topped with the best scenery and activities within NZ all whilst being paid a wage.

As above, yes a bylaw/law should ban any freedom camping (No pay... No stay!). In addition, the review of “certified freedom camper” sticker is needed to stop travellers bending the rules! There are plenty of camping grounds, we don’t need new areas designated for these campers..... all we will do is shift the problem!

So in summary Robin, I am a strong believer of pay up or stay away.

We should be supporting our local camping ground facilities.... they’re there for a reason... let’s use them. Europe has had this policy for years so why shouldn’t we adopt the same. I doubt very much we would notice any reduction in the number travellers coming to our pristine land, and if this was the case maybe its those people we don’t want here anyway! In regard to employers providing facilities, if we are all paying wages in accordance with the law, I think it is unfair to assume business owners need to invest in such facilities, something that is nothing to do with their core business. If a business opted to build facilities, its their own choice!

14. Hello. Concur with your view. Ban freedom camping totally. Sheer madness that we should be finding the maintenance and upkeep from our rates and taxes. Scream loudly.

“Old Age Ain’t No Place for Sissies” …. Bette Davis In a pharmacy, one of our main concerns is compliance of medications in older people. It’s very easy to assume that once we hand out the medications in the requisite brown paper bag, they will be taken just as directed by the GP. But you would be staggered at the amount of wastage that comes back from the homes of older people when they move, or pass away. I really do believe that the standard option of 3-months-stat, also known as all-at-once dispensing, has led to an enormous amount of unnecessary wastage of medicines for New Zealand. The economic impact of this has never been measured as far as I know, but it breaks my heart whenever I receive back big supermarket bags of medications that can’t be re-used.

Do you have an older member of your family living independently and taking 3 or more regular medicines? We would really like to encourage these people to change to dispensing all their medicines monthly. And we need your help.

Pharmacists have a massive role in helping to maintain compliance of medications in older people. Please have a conversation with your older family members to encourage them to ask for their medications monthly. The academic research is full of evidence that the increased interaction with pharmacy staff is worthwhile and valuable.

The College News Where is Cromwell? Why Cromwell College? Why spend a year boarding there? These were some of the common questions from students, and some parents, during our recent marketing of our Apartments Outdoor Pursuits Programme at the Careers Expo in Auckland. A reference to Queenstown and a map quickly sorted the first question and sharing feedback from current and past Apartments students and parents convinced many of the special opportunity this programme provides. As well as a stunning location, an exciting outdoor programme, valuable life skill development and a safe, dynamic community, our school offers good student teacher ratios in senior classes, positive supportive relationships between students and teachers, strong academic results in NCEA and a broad curriculum successfully catering for a wide variety of career pathways. It is a fabulous combination.

Since 1995, almost 400 students have graduated from the Cromwell College Apartments Outdoor Pursuits Programme this year we have another 18 students making the most of their time as part of our community and our school. They have been rock climbing, mountain biking, sailing and tramping and they are walked the Rakiura Track on Stewart Island at Queens Birthday weekend.

He rawe (congratulations) to Courtney Anderson on winning the Trust Power Community Award recently. This award is fitting acknowledgement of the selfless, caring and committed service Courtney gives to our school and wider community. The hallmark of Courtney’s dealings with people is her warmth and genuine interest in the wellbeing

of others. Courtney will complete two prestigious service awards this year, her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award and the St Johns Grand Prior Award - an outstanding achievement.

Courtney’s mentoring of young people at our school, support for St Johns Penguins, dancing to entertain senior citizens and her wider commitment to St John are all typical of her character – respectful, caring, responsible and considerate.

Jim Hughes, our Apartments Manager for the past 6 years, left us at the end of Term 1 to take up business opportunities in China. It was something Jim had been planning for some time. Jim is remembered very fondly by Apartments students and parents for his dedication and unwavering support and care. He was a great advocate for the benefits of a year in Cromwell for students and worked tirelessly to give students the best opportunity to live and learn through the Apartments programme.

We wish him all the best with his exciting business venture. We are very pleased that Danny Winstanley has been appointed as our new Apartments Manager.

Our staff and students were saddened to learn of the death of Joan Hillary and our thoughts and condolences are with her family. Joan had a long association with our school, supporting students in careers and transition programmes and was an immense help to Chris Page, our recent Careers Advisor. Joan was always a bundle of energy, smiles and life as she breezed through school to catch up with senior students and staff and we will miss her.

Clutha continues to lead our House Competition after the Athletics and Tug-o-War. The inter-house portrait competition last Friday was also entertaining with students in a relay drawing a guitar playing ‘rocker’, alias our caretaker Jim Dundass.

Our College Swimming Sports went very smoothly last Wednesday with a number of spirited Inter-House races and the mighty Clutha again victorious.

There were a number of records broken by Gaby Harman, Jack King and Owain Harris. Jack King and Gaby Harman also competed strongly at the Otago Secondary Schools Swimming Championships with top ten placings and Jack finishing 2nd in his 50m backstroke event.

Our Cultural Assembly in Week 4 was an excellent example of our school Kawa in action. Our three performers rock band ‘Usual Strangers’, Cameron Miller on trumpet and Julia Anderson and Megan Foster on piano, all displayed ‘Courage’ to perform in front of their peers. They also displayed ‘Personal Excellence’ in the quality of their performances. Our third Kawa value, ‘Respect’ was clearly evident in the attentive response of our students and I was proud to congratulate them for being an excellent audience, one that willingly displayed ‘manaakitanga’ – care, generosity and support for others. Volunteers invited to celebrate volunteering during National Volunteer Week Volunteering Central are continuing their tradition of celebrating with volunteers during National Volunteer Week (NVW) this month and invite volunteers from all walks of life to join other volunteers and guest speakers at their informal celebrations and be thanked for their outstanding efforts in the local community.

National Volunteer Week 2017 will be held from 18 to 24 June. This year’s theme, set

by Volunteering New Zealand, is “Live, laugh, share -- Volunteer” or “Kia ringa hora: Me mahi tūao.” This positive message is about celebrating what volunteers bring to their communities. It is important to recognise volunteering and the place it has in keeping our communities strong, healthy and connected. The benefits of being a volunteer are well-documented.

There’s better health and the ‘feel good’ endorphins that volunteering releases; around how volunteering can help with job prospects; and other health benefits such as extending longevity and reducing depression in many people. The positive message for NVW celebrates the joy that volunteers bring to their communities.

It also reminds us that volunteers reap the reward of a happier, more engaged life because they feel connected to their community.

Volunteering Central works in our communities of Alexandra, Cromwell, Queenstown, Wanaka and the surrounding areas to raise awareness of volunteering, encouraging best practice within organisations that involve volunteers and by connecting the two. Each year they celebrate with volunteers from all walks of life during NVW. ‘We are thrilled to have a great range of speakers to keep our gathered volunteers inspired and entertained this year and are really looking forward to hearing their volunteering stories and learning about how volunteering has impacted on their own lives and others around them” says Volunteering Centrals Gillian White.

The celebrations kick off in Queenstown where Founder, Trustee and CEO of Orphans Aid International, Sue van Schreven will be sharing how volunteers support the work of the organisation which cares about the child who has no parent, the child who has no home and the child who is not loved. Sue has been breathing and sleeping the vision since before Orphans Aid International

began in 2004. Sue has travelled extensively with work and has a great relationship with all the projects. We are thrilled that she is available to come and share her experiences with us.

In Wanaka 16 year old Leo Munro-Heward will be sharing his journey of volunteering with anti-cyber bullying group Sticks n Stones and his the experience of being awarded in the Giving Back category of the New Zealand Youth Awards for his work in setting up the Queer Straight Alliance in Wanaka. The award recognised people whose actions address a current need and have a significant impact on their community and Leo is clearly passionate about inclusion, acceptance and diversity and is working hard to raise awareness and support of fellow students and young people.

Cromwell will welcome 18 year old Courtney Anderson who recently won the Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award for her involvement in a wide range of organisations including St John Youth, Ripponburn Rest Home and Fundraising concerts. She is also passionate about dance, Students against Dangerous Driving, Duke of Edinburgh Programme and is currently a house leader at Cromwell College for the ‘mighty’ NEVIS. Courtney will be sharing what impact volunteering has had on her life and what aspirations she has for continuing to share her time and energy in the future.

In Alexandra Bruce McPherson, a semiretired accountant and self-described volunteering addict will share his story.

Bruce has been on numerous trips to various islands in Papua New Guinea through Volunteer Service Abroad. He volunteers his services to worthy nongovernment and business causes, making a difference by improving their office systems and assists with capacity building by

A concerned member of the public called Wanaka Police after seeing the 2.5-3m craft heading out from the swim lane end of Roy’s Bay. None of those on board – all adults with one from New Zealand and four from overseas – were wearing lifejackets and they were having difficulty with the small engine.

Wanaka Police called the harbourmaster’s office around 2pm.

Deputy Harbourmaster Craig Blake saw the craft approaching Ruby Island and caught up with the group on the island’s walking track.

He reminded them that wearing lifejackets was compulsory on the region’s lakes and waterways at all times in any boat less than six metres long.

Mr Blake explained that they could be liable for a fine of up to $300 and also pointed out the additional dangers of low temperatures during winter. He agreed to give the group a warning on this occasion and waive any fine if they agreed to leave immediately back to shore under his escort.

They accepted but could not restart their engine. Mr Blake therefore had to tow them back to Waterfall Creek and then take one person back to their car at Roy’s Bay via jet ski.

Marty Black praised the member of the public for initially calling the police and said it was a timely warning for all boaties.

“This group’s adventure could so easily have gone wrong and ended in tragedy. At best they could have been forced to spend a chilly night on Ruby Island were it not for the sensible reaction of the person reporting their situation.

Homemade is Best Slow Cooker Pork Ribs Mmmmm is all I can say!

Pork Ribs as required Make up a rub with smokey paprika, chilli powder, salt & pepper. The amount will depend on how many ribs you have, I used approx 2tsp paprika & 1/4 tsp chilli powder per rib.

Rub mix over both sides of ribs.

Into slow cooker place 1 cup maple syrup ( you can use honey if you wish, due to the cost of it these days I substituted it with maple syrup) & 1/2 cup soy sauce. Mix together & place ribs into the mix, spoon over coat.

Join Knit Club Wanaka for Worldwide Knit in Public Day on Saturday 10 June, 2017! hang out with other knitters for an hour or two to share your enjoyment of this craft.

The Worldwide Knit in Public Day returns to Wanaka for the second time on 10 June. Run for the first time in Wanaka last year, Worldwide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 with around 25 events around the world as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. In 2016, there were 1015 events in 57 countries with the day now the largest knitterevent in the world and celebrates the resurgence in knitting currently being seen around the world.

Locally, Knit Club Wanaka comprises a strong community of knitters (and a few who crochet) who have encouraged many to pick up their needles again and taught dozens of complete beginners how to knit in the past two years.

Knit Club Wanaka is the initiative of Michelle Stewart as an offshoot of her growing online knitting and wool shop, The Woven.

We are visitors and we have come here on a number of occasions over the last three or four years. Cromwell is to us a nice town but the shopping complex does the residents no favours.

Again today we looked to do some shopping in the retail area and again we have found it difficult to find our way around. The whole area seems to us to be like a maze with no signage except for the sign at the front, if that is what it is, of the complex. Most of the retail buildings are of the same design, unlike most towns, and this highlights the need for some sort of variations in frontages to make for more variety and consequently to make them more identifiable which will make finding the way around much easier. Signage within the complex pointing to retail stores would greatly help navigation.

In our humble opinion the shopping area has an “aged” appearance and yet the whole complex is relatively new.

The public areas have an attractive design but some of them need some TLC. There is little that can be done with the layout of the buildings but a general revamp of the complex could make for a much more attractive retail experience.

My wife feels uncomfortable as she feels that there is an eerie atmosphere and of course the lack of pedestrians is a factor. Perhaps an upgrade will bring back more shoppers and pedestrians and a better experience.
