Our Cromwell Community Plan project to beautify the entrance around the bridge is finally underway after 5 years of working with concepts / plans, getting permission and the funding.

You will have already seen the construction equipment in place as Fulton Hogan start work on a slip-lane from the Alexandra end.

They have combined the timing on these projects to help reduce our costs.

What we need now is a few willing helpers to plant 1000 tussocks and spread the mulch gravel around these plantings.

Because we are working next to the highway we need only adults and small groups at a time If you are free we can slot you into a 4 hour session (am & pm) weekend 1st & 2nd April, and a backup weekend 8th & 9th April.

Feedback invited on 17/18 Annual Plan Council is calling for feedback on its 2017/18 Annual Plan.

Nominations sought for ORC councillor vacancy Nominations will open next week for candidates wanting to fill the Dunstan Constituency vacancy on the Otago Regional Council created by the recent passing of Dr Maggie Lawton.

The Dunstan Constituency covers the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes Districts.

Operation SNAP (Serial Number Action Partnership) Dishonesty offending amounts to about 60% of reported crime and includes burglaries and thefts from vehicles. The goods most attractive to burglars and thieves are small, valuable, easily taken and include items such as jewellery, tools, CD/DVD players, MP3 players, mobile phones, handheld and laptop computers, game consoles, video games and digital and video cameras.

Police recover a large amount of stolen property every year.

Unfortunately many items cannot be returned because the owners did not record the serial numbers or mark the property so it could be identified as belonging to them.

In some areas Police and Neighbourhood Support are promoting “Operation SNAP” (Serial Number Action Partnership). This FREE initiative enables anyone to record serial numbers and other unique identifying details of their valuable items. Details are securely stored in an electronic database from where they can be quickly and easily retrieved (by owners) to give to Police if property is lost or stolen.

Yes, we have got to a critical growth point here in the Pharmacy that we feel the community would be better served by two pharmacies. Wait times for prescriptions are longer than we would prefer, which impacts on you, our treasured customers.

Lake Dunstan Pharmacy is being set up in the old Stirling Sports building on Murray Terrace, next to the i-Site and opposite the Big Fruit. It will provide full community pharmacy services, but will also be well-situated to attract the tourists and travellers stopping for a coffee break and admiring the beautiful views of the Pisa range. The pharmacies will NOT be linked – please do not expect to get repeats at either pharmacy. Opening date is early May (fingers crossed!).

Southern Lakes locals lure crowds to Festival of Colour A record number of Southern Lakes locals will participate in the acclaimed Festival of Colour, which kicks off in Wanaka next week.

Known as New Zealand’s ‘best little arts festival’, the seventh biennial event launches on Monday, April 3 with bonfires, storytelling and song on Wanaka’s lakefront. More than 160 locals are either performing, volunteering or working behind the scenes in the 10-day festival, which presents 48 exceptional events showcasing the best in New Zealand and international music, dance, theatre, comedy and visual arts.

Festival of Colour general manager Lindsey Schofield says community support – in the form of both participation and ticket sales – has been strong.

“The Festival of Colour is a fantastic event that has always been embraced by the Wanaka community and this year’s festival is particularly special as we have so much local talent involved,” she says. “The performances that we stage and the high level of local participation is a big part of why so many grantmakers support us – we really tap into the grassroots community. We bring in industry professionals at the top of their game each year to work with locals in a community production, which means that it’s a wonderful opportunity for our local participants and shows are guaranteed to be top class.”

Tickets have already sold out for the two Wanaka performances of local writer Annabel Wilson’s play, No Science to Goodbye, however there are still tickets available for the Glenorchy performance on April 7. Wilson says she is looking forward to her play’s world premiere next week.

“After a successful showing of moments from the piece at Rippon Hall last year, I’m excited to share the full-length work with my community,” she says. “It’s a local story, the idea for which first came to me five years ago while working on my Masters in Creative Writing, via distance learning. For me, it’s important the show has its premiere in the place that inspired it.”

Top Southern Lakes creatives also feature in The Blue Moments Project, a collaboration between Wanaka composer Angela Mote-Andrews, writer Laura Williamson and Queenstown singer Karen Hattaway with local musicians Dominic Stayne, Jeff Sinnott and Graeme Perkins.

Luggate-based Williamson also appears in the Aspiring Conversations series discussing cycling and mountain biking with former champion mountain biker Scarlett Hagen. Scarlett is a late addition to the programme, replacing Sir Lloyd Geering who is now unable to attend the Festival. Williamson says she is excited to be part of the 2017 programme after attending every festival thus far.

“The Blue Moments Project has been several years in the making and it’s going to be a pleasure to have the premiere in Wanaka at the Festival of Colour, a highlight of the arts calendar in this area,” she says. “That I’m also getting the chance to talk about mountain biking is a testament to the range of offerings at the festival – poetry, sports, jazz, comedy, it’s all there. It turns Wanaka into New York for a few days, but with better views.”

Up to 80 local singers, aged between eight and 80, will be performing in Sing It To My Face, a revealing intergenerational

sing-off in which four choirs express how they really feel about today’s society, on Tuesday, April 4.

As well as performances by Southern Lakes locals, the Festival of Colour presents a range of top New Zealand and international acts. Features of the programme include New York-based cabaret singer Lady Rizo, Edinburgh Festival Fringe winner Sonya Kelly in her funny and tender play How to Keep an Alien!, the worldwide smash hit show Every Brilliant Thing, Kiwi favourites Hudson & Halls Live!, country singer Tami Neilson and electronica legend Paddy Free. The 35-strong Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will also perform in a one-off show at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Sunday, April 8.

As part of the popular Aspiring Conversations series, scientist Siouxsie Wiles considers the future of antibiotics, photographer Joe Michael and scientist Tim Naish discuss Antarctica, and former Prime Minister Jim Bolger and historian Vincent O’Malley remember the Waikato War which shaped New Zealand. An additional session entitled ‘Innovation & Disruption’ features London-based co-founder of tech start-up Decoded, Kathryn Parsons, and managing director of Google Australia Jason Pellegrino.

Chaired by RNZ’s Lynn Freeman, the pair will discuss the constantly changing technological landscape and how it is changing the world we live and work in.

Wanaka events to showcase Southern Lakes research Southern Lakes district residents will soon have an opportunity to learn more about their lakes and the people that use them, with two unique events planned for Queenstown and Wanaka between March 31 and April 2.

The University of Otago’s new multidisciplinary research group, Catchments Otago and the Otago Regional Council (ORC) have joined forces to put together the two events.

“While both Catchments Otago and ORC undertake research and monitoring on the lakes, we see the benefit of working together to raise awareness about what happens there, and explore the different values the community has about them,” ORC director of stakeholder engagement Caroline Rowe said.

Catchments Otago is based on a research theme, and brings together researchers from across the university to help develop land and water management strategies

to address some of the challenges the region currently faces, as well as those that might arise in future.

Catchments Otago co-director and University of Otago Professor of Zoology Philip Seddon said the events in Wanaka were important for people because “water flows through everything; the health of the water is the health of our lives - our lakes matter and must be cared for.”

He encouraged people to go along to share their views on what the lakes should look like.

The first event is a PechaKucha Night, to be held at Queenstown Primary School hall on Friday 31 March, starting at 8pm.

PechaKucha is the art of concise presentations, where presenters have 20 slides and only 20 seconds to speak about each slide in a unique format with the theme “The Lakes and I.” A range of local speakers will talk about their about

The second event ‘Lab at the Lake’ will be held two days later in Wanaka, on Sunday 2 April.

This free event, open from 10am1pm, is a family fun day featuring the University of Otago/Otago Museum Labin-a-Box, the mobile science laboratory in a shipping container.

With hands-on fish, invertebrate, and algae displays, everyone can get up close with life from the lake and its surrounding catchment. There will also be displays about what happens with the lakes, from both ORC and Catchments Otago perspectives.

Misha’s Vineyard Unveils New Central Otago Tasting Room Misha’s Vineyard has opened a Tasting Room in Cromwell – the heart of the Central Otago wine region. The ideal location overlooking Lake Dunstan on the main approach to Cromwell, is already proving a busy destination for wine lovers.

Vineyard owners Andy and Misha Wilkinson have a spectacular 57-hectare estate on the edge of Lake Dunstan at Bendigo, just ten minutes from Cromwell, but felt a more centrally located tasting room would be easier for guests to access. With 20 export markets established and 10 vintages completed, Misha and Andy they decided it was the right time to open a Tasting Room to showcase their wines. “We receive calls every day from people visiting from overseas who are familiar with our brand and want to visit” said Andy. “We are also seeing increased tourism, with Central Otago growing its reputation as a world-class wine and food destination.

Cromwell was also recently named the fastest-growing small town in the country, so it’s really exciting to be part of that growth.”

Recent figures from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), showed that the Central Otago region had an 11.6% increase in visitor spending across all markets for the year to January 2017.

According to Tourism New Zealand, 20% of tourists arriving in the country take part in a ‘wine experience’, up from 13% in 2014.

It’s estimated that 2.9 million people visit Queenstown which is a 45-minute drive from Cromwell. Destination Queenstown’s latest

Visitor Experience Survey shows that ‘wine’ or ‘visiting wineries’ is one of the reasons why both domestic and international visitors chose Queenstown as a holiday destination.

With the wine tourist in mind, the design concept for Misha’s Vineyard Tasting Room was to create a simple yet elegant space that would enable guests to have a relaxed personal tasting experience. A French country inspired theme was chosen as the perfect backdrop for the pale blue and gold of the Misha’s Vineyard brand with the interiors and furniture being custom-built. The Wilkinsons also wanted to bring the atmosphere of the vineyard into the tasting room so three walls have large-scale photographic murals showcasing the work of renowned local photographer Tim Hawkins, who has been photographing Misha’s Vineyard since the ground-breaking ceremony in 2004. Local artist Kerry Lanauze has also created a couple of special art pieces that have become talking points for guests. The facility includes a private tasting room for members of the newly launched Misha’s Vineyard Vine Club.

With a range of single-vineyard Pinot Noir and aromatic white wines including Pinot Gris, Riesling, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, as well as a late harvest dessert wine, Misha’s Vineyard offers guests a wide range of wines to sample. Misha’s Vineyard Tasting Room is open every day from 10am to 4pm, and also offers platters and small plates for those wanting to relax and enjoy a glass of wine and the views.

Homemade is Best

Date Scones I have spent years perfecting a scone recipe and decided recently this was the one. My husband say’s his are better than mine, so naturally I let him make them (smirk) 2 cups S/R flour 1 tsp baking powder 1Tbsp sugar 50g butter 1 cup chopped dates 3/4 cup milk 1 egg beaten Place the first 4 ingredients into a food processor & whiz until mix resembles course breadcrumbs. Tip into a bowl & add remaining ingreds, mix to form a soft dough.

Turn out onto a floured surface and pat into a square, approx 15cm square & 4cm thick. Cut into 6 scones and place on a lined tray.

Bake at 200 deg for around 20mins.

NB This recipe can be used for cheese scones also, just replace dates with cheese, scrap the sugar & use 1tsp salt instead.
